:love:Watford 1-2 Manchester United: Deeney goes from hero to zero with late own goal

    2276942_heroa.jpg

Troy Deeney scored at both ends of the pitch in a frantic finale as Manchester United beat Watford 2-1 to move to the top of the Premier League.

Memphis Depay, who had been left out for the previous two matches, scored with a brilliant volley from Ander Herrera's cross early in the game and it looked like that strike would prove decisive.

David de Gea made an excellent save from Almen Abdi in the second half but United were not to keep a sixth consecutive clean sheet as Deeney scored a late penalty after Marcos Rojo had fouled Odion Ighalo in the box.

United secured a dramatic victory in stoppage time, though, as Deeney scored an own goal as he attempted to keep out Bastian Schweinsteiger's cross-shot.

Manchester City, Arsenal and Leicester City all have the chance to surpass United at the top of the table when they play their respective fixtures later on Saturday.

    kMGB8J4.jpg

Ighalo was passed fit for Watford, who made one change to their team with Jurado replacing Nathan Ake.

There were four changes for United, with Depay brought back into the side to lead the attack as they attempted to cope with Anthony Martial, Wayne Rooney and James Wilson all being ruled out.

Van Gaal said before the game that Depay's performances this season had been disappointing, but the attacker made an impressive early impact.

On 11 minutes, Herrera whipped in a cross from the right and Depay connected with a first-time left-footed volley into the top corner.

Watford top scorer Ighalo tried to respond when he twisted and turned impressively before slicing off target after Ashley Young had been robbed by Etienne Capoue, who set up the opportunity.

United suffered a blow midway through the half when Herrera pulled up injured while chasing down Ikechi Anya and had to be replaced by Rojo.

The visitors came closest to finding the game's second goal prior to half-time when Morgan Schneiderlin volleyed just over with an impressive effort after Watford had failed to take several opportunities to clear their lines.

They also threatened when Depay cut inside from the left and forced Heurelho Gomes into a diving stop with a shot from outside the box.

United created another good opportunity at the start of the second half. Depay latched on to a poor pass from Capoue and played in Jesse Lingard, whose shot was pushed away by Gomes.

De Gea was called into action for the first time when substitute Ake and Ighalo combined to set up Deeney to lash a powerful shot straight at the goalkeeper.

At the other end, Depay came close to sealing the victory with a clever attempt which fell just wide after he had been fed by Juan Mata.

The game was in the balance and De Gea had to get down superbly to tip an Abdi shot away at his near post after Chris Smalling had only half-cleared the danger with a header in a crowded goalmouth.

Deeney drove another powerful strike straight down the throat of De Gea, while Lingard failed to chip Gomes with a late opportunity.

Just as it looked as if United were going to hold on for victory, Deeney headed on a long pass and Rojo fouled Ighalo from behind in the box.

Captain Deeney stepped up to take the penalty and converted high past De Gea as the hosts celebrated what they thought would be a valuable point.

The drama was not over, though, as Lingard's shot in stoppage time was saved by Gomes and Schweinsteiger's attempt from the rebound was diverted over his own line by a sliding Deeney.

Chelsea 1-0 Norwich City: Costa winner saves more Mourinho blushes

    2278102_heroa.jpg

Diego Costa signalled the end of a three-game losing streak for Chelsea in the Premier League as the champions picked up a 1-0 victory over Norwich City on Saturday.

Since beating Aston Villa 2-0 on October 17, Chelsea had been defeated by West Ham, Liverpool and Stoke City to leave them 16th in the top flight.

However, Costa halted his own barren run of 603 minutes without a goal in all competitions to lift Chelsea spirits at Stamford Bridge.

Both teams had chances to go in front during an open first half, with each having an appeal for a penalty turned down by referee Craig Pawson.

It looked destined to be another frustrating day at the office for Chelsea until Costa capitalised on some quick thinking from Cesc Fabregas to send his side in front after 64 minutes.

The result sees Chelsea climb above Norwich into 15th and manager Jose Mourinho will hope it marks the beginning of an upturn in form.

Mourinho handed Kenedy a first Premier League start as both managers made three changes and it was Chelsea who had the better of the early chances – Fabregas scooping over from close range following an Eden Hazard cutback before John Terry diverted just wide from a corner.

Nathan Redmond produced the first shot on target when he drew a save from Asmir Begovic with a powerful drive from a tight angle, while Willian tested John Ruddy at the other end following a threatening run from Hazard.

Redmond was deployed in an unfamiliar central attacking role and was integral to a move that ended with Dieumerci Mbokani lifting a shot over the crossbar from the edge of the box after 20 minutes.

Costa failed to keep his effort down after a slick passing move from the hosts, before Willian went down under the challenge of Jonny Howson in the box.

Replays confirmed the Norwich midfielder's innocence – pulling off a superb challenge to dispossess the Brazilian – and Willian was lucky to avoid giving away a spot-kick at the other end when he brought down Robbie Brady moments later.
Chelsea found themselves under pressure in the closing stages of the first half, but Ruddy had to be alert to deflect wide a Costa strike following a swift counter-attack.

Kurt Zouma should have done better when he volleyed over from a corner early in the second period, before Fabregas forced Ruddy into a diving save with a low drive.

But Chelsea's persistence paid off when Fabregas' quickly taken free-kick over the top of the Norwich defence found Costa, who kept his cool to curl a shot around Ruddy.

Zouma could have double the advantage when he headed against the crossbar from a free-kick soon after, while a fierce Brady strike – touched wide by Begovic – formed part of a limited second-half attacking threat for Norwich.

Ruddy kept out Nemanja Matic as Chelsea claimed the points, with fans chanting Mourinho's name in a show of support for their under-pressure manager, whose next Premier League test comes at Tottenham in eight days.

Newcastle 0-3 Leicester City: Vardy equals record as Foxes go top

    2277922_heroa.jpg

Jamie Vardy equalled Ruud van Nistelrooy's record of scoring in 10 successive Premier League games as Leicester City moved top of the table with a 3-0 win over Newcastle United on Saturday.

The England international's sensational run of form in front of goal showed no signs of abating as he netted the opener, before Leonardo Ulloa and Shinji Okazaki sealed victory at St James' Park.

Having been denied on two earlier occasions, Vardy moved level with Van Nistelrooy in first-half stoppage time as he cut inside Moussa Sissoko and rifled a low shot past Rob Elliot.

Ulloa added the second after 62 minutes with his fourth goal in three appearances against Newcastle, the 29-year-old given a free header by Newcastle's woeful defending.

Steve McClaren's side were unable to raise themselves as frustration grew in the stands, boos ringing out at the final whistle after Okazaki pounced following Elliot's save from Marc Albrighton.

It leaves Newcastle hovering one point above the bottom three, while Claudio Ranieri's side climb to the summit above Manchester United.

Having passed a late fitness test prior to kick-off, Vardy was presented with an early chance to equal Van Nistelrooy's record after six minutes.

Newcastle – unchanged from their 1-0 win over Bournemouth – failed to deal with an Albrighton corner and the loose ball dropped to the England international, but his effort was well blocked.

Leicester were making all the running in the opening minutes and a swift counter-attack from Riyad Mahrez created an opening for Ulloa – in for Jeff Schlupp as Ranieri's only change – however Vurnon Anita made a crucial interception before the striker could tap home from close range.

The hosts – who lost Cheick Tiote to a groin injury after 20 minutes – struggled to create anything in attack, Ayoze Perez blazing their best chance over the crossbar.

Eventually Leicester's pressure told as Vardy's latest milestone moment came in first-half stoppage time, the 28-year-old drifting past Sissoko before rifling past Elliot.

McClaren's attempts to cajole Newcastle at the break initially had the desired impact, but they slowly lost any momentum and allowed Leicester to control proceedings.

The pace of Vardy and Mahrez were a constant threat and, after a number of wasted chances, Vardy rattled the crossbar. Weak defending from Chancel Mbemba allowed him a free shot at goal but the woodwork came to Elliot's rescue.

Newcastle failed to heed that warning and Ulloa doubled the away team's advantage just after the hour with his first of the campaign, the striker left unmarked at the back post to head home Mahrez's pinpoint cross.

Georginio Wijnaldum was denied a late consolation as Danny Drinkwater headed off the line but it was too little, too late as Leicester wrapped up an easy win, substitute Okazaki pouncing to net the third while Newcastle's defence stood and watched.

Everton 4-0 Aston Villa: Lukaku & Barkley at the double in easy win

    2278042_heroa.jpg

Romelu Lukaku scored his 50th Premier League goal as Everton romped to a comfortable 4-0 victory over woeful Aston Villa at Goodison Park.

The Belgian striker joined Robbie Fowler, Michael Owen, Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo in reaching the landmark before his 23rd birthday as both he and England star Ross Barkley scored twice in a superb Everton performance.

Having scored five times for Spain Under-21s during the international break, Gerard Deulofeu was at the heart of Everton's best play, with the former Barcelona midfielder setting up Barkley for Everton's first before being involved as Lukaku added a second.

Barkley's second just before half-time all but put the result beyond doubt, and the travelling Villa supporters were shown no signs of an upturn in their side's fortunes under new manager Remi Garde.

Lukaku doubled his tally from Barkley's pass as Villa's miserable afternoon was compounded just before the hour, leaving Everton able to cruise to a comfortable success.

The Premier League's bottom club Villa are now without a win in 12 games, since their opening-day win at Bournemouth, while Everton are now unbeaten in three and have the top four in their sights.

Villa's frailties were evident from the outset as they sat deep and gifted possession to their hosts with loose passes, and Everton were allowed to control the early stages of the game.

It seemed only a matter of time before Everton unlocked the Villa defence, and the breakthrough came when a flowing passing move started by Barkley put Deulofeu through for a shot that Brad Guzan parried well, but Barkley was there to poke the ball into an open net from two yards.

The goal helped Everton grow in confidence, and Deulofeu tormented Ciaran Clark down the right before crossing for Arouna Kone to angle a header that forced a brilliant save from Guzan.

But the American goalkeeper could do nothing to stop Everton doubling their lead shortly afterwards, when Deulofeu again burst into the Villa box and Seamus Coleman crossed for Lukaku to head into the far corner of Guzan's net.

And Lukaku was the catalyst for Everton's third goal, flicking the ball into the box for Kone to fire in a low shot that Guzan smothered, only for the ball to run loose to Barkley who lashed it home.

Villa emerged from the break looking like a side who had been subjected to a roasting from Garde, but Jordan Veretout could not beat Tim Howard when a stray pass from Ramiro Funes Mori afforded him a chance.

Kieran Richardson almost gave Villa a shred of hope when he broke down the left and cut inside to fire a powerful drive that needed a good save from the diving Howard to keep it out.

But moments later the game was put beyond all doubt when Deulofeu tore through Villa's midfield and played in Barkley, who squared to Lukaku and the Belgian clipped the ball over Guzan to delight the home support.

Lukaku's brace means he maintains his record of scoring in every Premier League outing against Villa, who remain rooted to the foot of the table following a 10th defeat from 13 games.

West Brom 2-1 Arsenal: Arteta own goal sinks Gunners

    2277832_heroa.jpg

Mikel Arteta's own goal consigned Arsenal to a 2-1 defeat against West Brom that gives Manchester City the chance to take sole ownership of top spot in the Premier League.

Santi Cazorla had a major chance to salvage a draw and spare his compatriot's blushes six minutes from time from the penalty spot, but he slipped as he took the kick and skied his effort over the crossbar.

Arteta put the ball into his own net after replacing the injured Francis Coquelin in the 14th minute before he was then forced off himself with what appeared to be a calf problem early in the second half.

Arsenal dominated the early proceedings and deservedly took the lead through Olivier Giroud.

But West Brom responded well to going behind and James Morrison found the net from Chris Brunt's free-kick.

Arteta then deflected a cross from the left past Petr Cech to gift West Brom the lead and Arsenal saw their best chance of a draw go to waste when Cazorla's slip ended their chances of extending their six-match unbeaten run.

Arsenal first threatened in the 14th minute when Alexis Sanchez curled a free-kick over the wall, but Boaz Myhill was equal to the task and made a comfortable save.

Arsene Wenger’s men grabbed the lead on the half-hour mark from another set piece when Mesut Ozil sent in a superb cross for Giroud, who lost his marker before heading home from close range.

The visitors had a fine chance to double their lead shortly afterwards following a good run from Sanchez down the right, but Kieran Gibbs fired his shot just over the bar.

And West Brom were level in the 35th minute with their first serious chance of the game. Brunt delivered a free-kick into the area and Morrison beat Cech with a subtle volley in the far corner.

The home side then went a goal up shortly before the break via Arteta, who saw James McClean's cross deflect off Cech and onto his leg before it crept over the line.

Ozil nearly restored parity immediately after the break when he tried his luck after picking up a cross from the left, but the Germany international was denied by the upright.

Salomon Rondon could have doubled his side's lead after shrugging off Per Mertesacker, but he wildly blasted his volley from inside the area over the bar.

Substitute Joel Campbell should have made it 2-2 midway through the second half after a brilliant pass from Cazorla, but the attacker mishit his shot from close range.

Jonas Olsson nearly netted a third for West Brom after a superb corner from Brunt, but Cech somehow did enough to deny the Swede and keep his side's chances alive.

Cazorla was given the chance to level in the 84th minute following Brunt's foul on Alexis, but the midfielder lost his footing to leave West Brom to take all three points.

Swansea 2-2 Bournemouth: Shelvey seals Swans comeback

    2277882_heroa.jpg

Andre Ayew and Jonjo Shelvey salvaged a point for Swansea City as they came from two goals down to draw 2-2 with Bournemouth at the Liberty Stadium.

Eddie Howe's team stormed ahead following an energetic start with Josh King scoring his Premier League goal before Dan Gosling doubled the visitors' lead in the 26th minute.

However, Swansea pulled one back two minutes later with Ayew finding the net with a brilliant backheel, despite calls for offside.

And Garry Monk's side went into the break level as the Ghanaian won a debatable penalty off Simon Francis, which Shelvey duly dispatched.

Bournemouth pressed with intensity in the second half but were unable to add to retake the lead, ending their run of four straight top-flight defeats but leaving them without a win in seven.

The result will not alleviate the mounting pressure on Swansea boss Monk, whose side now have just one win from their past nine Premier League fixtures.

Monk made four changes from the defeat to Norwich City, with Bafetimbi Gomis, Jefferson Montero, Gylfi Sigurdsson and Federico Fernandez all dropped to the bench.

One of the beneficiaries was Kyle Bartley, but his clearance ricocheted off Ki Sung-yueng and enabled Junior Stanislas to square for King to slide in Bournemouth's opener inside 10 minutes.

Swansea responded impressively but were denied an instant reply, Adam Federici rushing off his line to divert Wayne Routledge's effort around the post before denying Eder - making his first Premier League start - from six-yards off the resulting corner.

Bournemouth were unperturbed and, after Lukasz Fabianski kept out King, they added their second with 26 minutes on the clocks as Gosling picked out the top corner with an emphatic first-time finish from Matt Ritchie's pass.

Swansea halved the deficit almost immediately when Ayew beat Federici with a brilliant piece of improvisation, using his heel to find the bottom corner amidst calls for offside from the Bournemouth players.

With half-time approaching, Swansea were offered the chance to restore parity when Ayew benefitted from another controversial decision as he went to ground inside the box under minimal contact from Francis.

The referee awarded a penalty that Shelvey converted, firing the ball into the bottom corner and out of Federici's reach.

The rain poured down in the second half, making the surface slick and leading to more long balls from the two sides.

Bournemouth remained dangerous and, on the hour-mark, Cook volleyed wide from a tight angle following Eder's wayward headed clearance.

Howe's side's intense pressing maintained the pressure on Swansea, so Monk introduced Montero, Sigurdsson and Gomis by the 73rd minute in an attempt to turn the tide.

But while Montero's pace offered them a more direct attacking outlet on the left, there was to be no winning goal as the spoils were shared.

Lorient 1-2 Paris Saint-Germain: Ongenda and Matuidi extend PSG's winning run

    2278512_heroa.jpg

Paris Saint-Germain tightened their grip at the top of Ligue 1 with a comfortable 2-1 win at Lorient on Saturday, their eighth consecutive league victory sealed by two goals in the first half.

Hervin Ongenda's first league goal for the club put the defending champions ahead on 26 minutes despite Lorient having made a strong start, the 20-year-old tapping in Gregory van der Wiel's superb cross.

Blaise Matuidi doubled the lead six minutes later, converting a low cross from Zlatan Ibrahimovic, and the result, PSG's fifth successive win at Stade du Moustoir, was never in doubt from that point.

Benjamin Moukandjo grabbed one back for Lorient on 80 minutes, heading in a precise cross from Romain Philippoteaux, but the home side could not find an equaliser.

Ibrahimovic was making his 100th Ligue 1 appearance but was unable to add to his 84 goals for PSG, having scored in the club's previous six league matches.

Head coach Laurent Blanc was without a host of key players including Angel di Maria, Marco Verratti, Ezequiel Lavezzi, David Luiz and Javier Pastore, with youth team products Ongenda and Presnel Kimpembe handed places in the side.

Following an emotional rendition of La Marseillaise and a period of silence following the Paris terror attacks, Lorient had the first chance on five minutes but Moukandjo's touch let him down in front of goal.

Ligue 1 leaders PSG, who were wearing special shirts to commemorate those who lost their lives in the French capital last Friday, were struggling to assert themselves on the game and goalkeeper Kevin Trapp had to save twice in two minutes, from Raphael Guerreiro and then from Vincent Le Goff.

But the defending champions took the lead on 25 minutes with their first meaningful attack when Van der Wiel floated a sumptuous cross to Ongenda, who beat the offside trap to stab a volley through Benjamin Lecomte's legs to net his first league goal for PSG.

Just six minutes later it was 2-0 as PSG took control. Ongenda linked up with Ibrahimovic and the Sweden international picked out Matuidi's run for a simple finish from six yards.

PSG continued to push for goals after the break and almost added a third five minutes into the second half, but Lecomte kept out Lorient defender Lamine Gassama's header to prevent an own-goal.

Both teams were struggling for balance on Lorient's artificial pitch, with many players slipping due to the wet conditions.

PSG were looking comfortable but Lorient gave themselves hope by pulling a goal back on 80 minutes, Moukandjo powering in a header from close range after good work by substitute Philippoteaux.

Ibrahamovic almost secured the victory with five minutes to go but his drive was kept out by Lecomte.

:shocked:Real Madrid 0-4 Barcelona: Suarez scores twice as Benitez's men humiliated in the Clasico

    2279122_heroa.jpg

Barcelona romped to a dominant Clasico triumph on Saturday as two goals from Luis Suarez inspired them to a 4-0 thrashing of Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Rafael Benitez had vowed to attack the Liga leaders and he named Karim Benzema and James Rodriguez in his starting line-up, but it was Barca who took the lead when Suarez fired beyond Keylor Navas, with the returning Lionel Messi watching from the bench.

Neymar made it 2-0 shortly before the break and a stunning goal from Andres Iniesta put the champions firmly in charge early in the second period before Suarez's delicate finish made it four after Messi - who came on in the 55th minute - had fed Jordi Alba.

Madrid's players never looked comfortable in Benitez's deep-lying set-up and the front three were isolated throughout, though Claudio Bravo denied Cristiano Ronaldo superbly late on.

The result means Barca are now six points clear of Madrid at the top of the table and piles further pressure on Benitez's shoulders ahead of a crucial few weeks before the winter break.

After a slow opening it was Neymar who missed the first good chance, blasting over the bar from the edge of the area after Suarez had teed him up following Alba's cross.

Madrid responded swiftly, Bravo beating away Ronaldo's cross after some fine interplay between the reunited front three of the Portuguese, Gareth Bale and Karim Benzema.

But Barca were in front with 11 minutes on the clock. Sergi Roberto burst through the heart of midfield and, as Sergio Ramos pushed up to close him down, he slipped the ball through to Suarez who bent a low shot past Navas and into the bottom corner.

Neymar brought a good save from Navas with a free-kick before Bravo denied James Rodriguez low to his left after Luka Modric set him up 20 yards out, but Barca doubled their advantage just six minutes before the break.

Iniesta was granted far too much time and space in the final third and a delicate chipped pass allowed Neymar to spring the offside trap and squeeze the ball under Navas at the near post.

Barca almost made it three just before half-time, Marcelo recovering superbly to head the ball off the line after Neymar had combined brilliantly with Suarez.

Madrid came flying out of the traps in the second half and Marcelo should have done much better when he fired into the side-netting after running clean through down the left.

Bravo turned a James shot around the post but Madrid were cut apart again on 53 minutes as Barcelona bagged a third. Iniesta, once more given the freedom of the final third, passed in to Neymar and, after the Brazilian back-heeled into his path, fired an unstoppable shot into the top corner.

Benitez threw on Dani Carvajal and Isco and the full-back came close to a goal as he scuffed a shot narrowly wide, before Raphael Varane headed straight at Bravo from close range.

Bale bent a fine pass to Ronaldo on the break but Navas stood up well to deny the Portugal captain's lofted effort, and Barca had a fourth just six minutes later. Alba touched Messi's pass on to Suarez, who clipped a finish beyond Navas and into the far corner without a Madrid defender in sight.

Bravo saved superbly to keep out Ronaldo's header and Madrid's evening went from bad to worse when substitute Isco was sent off for kicking Alba as he ran clear in the closing minutes, allowing Barca to ease to an emphatic victory.

:shocked:Manchester City 1-4 Liverpool: Rampant Reds stun Pellegrini's men

    2278892_heroa.jpg

Liverpool turned in a stunning first-half performance to secure a shock 4-1 victory over Manchester City.

Jurgen Klopp's side were clinical on the counter-attack, racing into a three-goal lead that brought an end to a run of six Premier League matches away at City without a win.

Eliaquim Mangala – brought into the centre of defence along with Martin Demichelis – opened the scoring with an own goal early on, setting the tone for a dismal defensive display.

Philippe Coutinho scored his fourth goal in five top-flight appearances against City to double Liverpool's advantage, with Roberto Firmino – in for Christian Benteke in attack – adding the third in sensational fashion.

Making his return after a seven-week absence, Sergio Aguero brilliantly pulled one back for City shortly before the interval, but they were unable to push on in the second half.

Their misery was compounded nine minutes from time when Martin Skrtel blasted past Joe Hart from the edge of the box, meaning City now sit third behind rivals Manchester United and shock league leaders Leicester City.

Mangala got off to a poor start on his return to the starting line-up, putting the ball into the back of his own net off a cutback from Firmino, though Bacary Sagna was partly culpable having lost possession beforehand.

Liverpool grabbed their second when a mix-up between Mangala and Aleksandar Kolarov was capitalised upon by Firmino, who raced through and picked out Coutinho with a sublime pass which he slid between Hart's legs.

The Reds' defence was, in contrast, proving impressively resilient and their counter-attacking play continued to trouble Pellegrini's side.

Another break led to their third shortly after the half-hour mark, when Emre Can's backheel set Coutinho in behind the defence and he squared for Firmino to round off an exquisite move with the simplest of finishes.

The former Hoffenheim forward came close to adding to his tally twice in quick succession soon after, first being denied by a good save from Hart before firing narrowly wide nine minutes before the break.

Aguero gave City a lifeline two minutes before the interval when he curled home an exceptional finish from 25 yards, becoming the highest-scoring South American in Premier League history with his 85th goal.

Pellegrini replaced Yaya Toure and Jesus Navas with Fernandinho and Fabian Delph for the second half in a bid to add more solidity to his team.

However, it compromised their creativity and they were carved open once again on the hour mark, but Hart made a vital save to deny Firmino once more.

Klopp's side suffered a wobble moments later, Simon Mignolet forced into a diving save to keep Aguero at bay before Fernandinho skied an effort from six yards out off a set-piece delivery.

Skrtel fired home a powerful fourth from just inside the box and City's day was summed up when Raheem Sterling – facing his former employers – failed to make contact with the goal at his mercy as Liverpool moved up to ninth.

Schalke 1-3 Bayern Munich: Martinez & Muller hand Die Roten victory

    2279742_heroa.jpg

Javi Martinez's first Bundesliga goal since May 2013 helped Bayern Munich to beat Schalke 3-1 at the Veltins Arena on Saturday, extending their lead at the top of the table to eight points.

Bayern's start looked ominous from Schalke's perspective, as David Alaba's deflected effort gave the away side the lead after just nine minutes.

The visitors' opportunity to make the most of Borussia Dortmund's 3-1 defeat in Hamburg on Friday was at risk when Max Meyer equalised, but Martinez nodded home with 21 minutes to go to restore Bayern's lead.

Thomas Muller then made it three in injury time as Schalke were consigned to only their second home loss of the season.

Schalke offered little resistance to Bayern initially and, although there was more than a hint of luck about the opener, it came as little surprise to see the champions take only nine minutes to pounce.

The home side failed to fully clear a Bayern corner and Alaba produced a fierce 25-yard drive which struck Leon Goretzka and looped into the top-right corner.

Schalke gradually settled into proceedings and equalised eight minutes later.

Guardiola had highlighted the danger posed by Leroy Sane before the match and the 19-year-old duly showed why, bursting into the Bayern half before finding Meyer, who coolly cut inside Philipp Lahm and beat Neuer from 20 yards, though the goalkeeper should have done better.

Bayern remained dominant, though, forcing Schalke to play on the counterattack through Sane and Meyer. Goalkeeper Ralf Fahrmann kept the hosts on level terms just before the half-hour mark, palming away Robert Lewandowski's 20-yard curler.

The match continued with a similar pattern at the start of the second period and Schalke crafted an early opportunity on the break, but Sane sliced a half-volley wide following Dennis Aogo's surge and cross from the left.

Bayern continued to probe at the other end and were only let down by their finishing, as Lewandowski headed over from Arjen Robben's free-kick in the 59th minute.

Schalke's resistance failed ten minutes later, as Martinez rose to meet Robben's pinpoint cross and the Spaniard had no trouble heading in from eight yards.

Schalke almost rallied for a second time with just two minutes to go, as Eric Choupo-Moting latched on to a headed flick-on and prodded agonisingly wide from 12 yards.

Lewandowski was inches away from adding third with the clock ticking down, before Muller capped off the scoring by beating Fahrmann with a left-footed shot across the goalkeeper and into the bottom far corner of the net.

Hugo Lloris remains "very sad" but wants to pay his respects to the victims of Friday's Paris attacks by playing for Tottenham this weekend, according to manager Mauricio Pochettino.

Lloris captained France in an international friendly with England at Wembley on Tuesday, four days on from the devastating terror attacks in the capital that claimed at least 129 lives.

The Tottenham goalkeeper was also involved in the clash with Germany at Stade de France on the night of the tragedy.

In spite of the events however, Pochettino is confident Lloris is in the right frame of mind to take to the field against West Ham on Sunday.

"He wants to play – to pay tribute and show respect," the Argentine coach said.

"He is very sad but he is strong enough and I think he is ready to play on Sunday.

"It has been a very tough period for him. As captain of France, it is a big responsibility, but he has a great mind. He is an unbelievable person and character.

"I want to send my condolences to the people of Paris. They have been a very sad few days. The French players, the Belgian players, the English players – we all share the same pain for all that happened. All individuals are different.

"We spoke about it a lot. It is impossible to stay away from it but the players are in good condition.

"The best way to pay tribute to the families and people in Paris is to do our job, which is to play, and I think the players are in good condition."
