Napoli 2-1 Inter: Higuain double moves Sarri's side top

    2328932_heroa.jpg

Gonzalo Higuain scored twice to earn Napoli a 2-1 win over Inter at the Stadio San Paolo on Monday as the hosts leapfrogged their opponents into top spot and bolstered their Scudetto hopes.

The sides went into the weekend's action as the league's top two - Fiorentina's draw with Sassuolo earlier on Monday temporarily pushing Napoli down to third - but Higuain continued to impress for Maurizio Sarri's men, whose task was aided by the first-half dismissal of Yuto Nagatomo.

Higuain needed just over a minute to find the net for an eighth home league game running as Inter conceded their first goal in more than a month.

Napoli proceeded to dominate the first half while Inter hopes were hampered when Nagatomo picked up two yellow cards in nine first-half minutes for poor challenges on Jose Callejon and Allan.

Higuain's second on 62 minutes - an impressive blend of pace, strength and lethal finishing - proved critical, with Adem Ljajic giving Inter hope shortly after.

But Sarri's side were deserving of an eighth consecutive home win in all competitions, surviving a couple of late scares to go a point clear of Inter who remain winless in Naples since October 1997.

Napoli could scarcely have hoped for a better start as they took the lead after just 64 seconds following uncharacteristically sloppy Inter defending.

Jeison Murillo cleared straight to Callejon who was able to chest the ball into Higuain's path, the Argentinian firing past Samir Handanovic to maintain his record of scoring in every home game for Napoli against Inter.

Inter steadied themselves but remained vulnerable to Napoli's free-flowing attacking play - Callejon fluffing a volley from inside the area before Marek Hamsik saw an effort well saved by Handanovic.

Fredy Guarin and Ivan Perisic both went close on rare forays forward for Inter but the hosts were given an extra boost when Nagatomo was shown a second yellow card for a mistimed challenge on Callejon prior to half-time.
Mancini withdrew the largely anonymous Mauro Icardi for Alex Telles at half-time but Napoli continued to control possession.

Inter offered a limited threat on the break as Sarri's men sought to put the result beyond doubt, Hamsik's header at goal well kept out by Handanovic before Allan saw a long-range drive fly over the crossbar.

Unsurprisingly, it was Higuain who doubled Napoli's lead shortly after the hour as he latched onto Raul Albiol's header, holding off Murillo and Miranda before slotting a wonderful finish past Handanovic.

Ljajic produced an impressive left-footed strike from inside the area to beat Pepe Reina low to his left and give Inter hope five minutes later.

Inter piled on the pressure in search of an equaliser - Miranda hitting the post before Reina turned Stevan Jovetic's header onto the crossbar in the final stages - but Napoli survived a gripping finale to pick up an important win in the context of their burgeoning title hopes.

No time for Klopp to celebrate hat-trick of wins

    2278872_heroa.jpg

Jurgen Klopp has overseen three victories on the spin in the space of eight days, but there is no time for the Liverpool boss to revel in those results.

The Reds dismantled Manchester City 4-1 at the Etihad, before securing Europa League progress against Bordeaux at Anfield, and then recorded their first top-flight home win under the German against Swansea on Sunday evening.

The trio of triumphs means Liverpool have now been victors in six of their last seven showings, but Klopp’s attention is solely on preparations for the forthcoming fixtures.

The Merseysiders have a midweek Capital One Cup clash at Southampton before making the journey to St James’ Park for a league test against Newcastle.

“Maybe I should [feel a sense of momentum], but I don't! I don't feel it because we play again on Wednesday, that's my problem,” Klopp said following the 1-0 defeat of Swansea.

“I would like to feel better, I would like to say, 'come on, three days off, celebrating a good week', but we don’t have time for this.

“We have to analyse our game, find out what we can use for Southampton, what we should change, fly back from Southampton and fly to Newcastle.

“We are on the road next week so it's really difficult. But of course we feel good, the boys feel good.

“Alberto Moreno had, I think, 20 knocks everywhere on his body and was limping from the pitch to the dressing room. We asked, 'Where is the pain?', he said, 'Everywhere'. That's how it feels in this moment but we will be back in the race and preparing for Southampton.”

Gerrard enjoys first training session under Klopp

    steven-gerrard-chelsea-liverpool-premier-league-10052015_mclupgl95iwm14wigt6yxafth.jpg

Steven Gerrard laced up at Melwood again as he joined Liverpool’s training session on Monday.

The former captain accepted the club’s invitation, first extended in May, to stay in shape with the squad during LA Galaxy’s off-season.

He reported for the workout and was a welcome addition, with Jurgen Klopp sharing a laugh and a few words with him.

The midfielder admitted last week that he was eager to experience the German trainer’s ‘full-throttle’ approach. “I’m very excited to go in,” he told BT Sport.

“Obviously I’ve been there for a very long time and I’ve come out for a short period, but I’m looking forward going into the new set-up to having a look at what Klopp’s all about tactically, what he demands of his players and how much he’s changed since the Brendan [Rodgers] era.

"You just watch him in those interviews and you just love watching him. He’s got that infectious personality and I’m excited to go and spend some time with him.”

Gerrard and Klopp met in mid-November, with the manager saying: “It was good. He is a really, really good person. I liked it and enjoyed the time we spent together.”

The 35-year-old was just as positive after the talks with the former Borussia Dortmund boss, who gave him one of his trademark hugs.

"I got one off him, they’re quite nice,” admitted Gerrard. “He makes you feel good. He’s got that enthusiasm, very infectious and he makes players feel special.

"I’m an ex-player and I came out of his office feeling really good and really confident. That’s what he brings, he’s lifted the whole club, the fans, the supporters, the staff and he’s got Liverpool playing really well.”

Gerrard was in the stands as Liverpool secured their first league win at Anfield under Klopp on Sunday evening, ousting Swansea 1-0.

Chelsea about the team, not just Costa - Ivanovic

    ivanovic-and-costa-cropped_c5l9mtl5ab7j13nziiu38cbng.jpg

Branislav Ivanovic says the team takes precedence over the individual following Diego Costa's reaction to being left on the bench for Chelsea's trip to Tottenham.

Following a clash with Jose Mourinho during the Champions League win at Maccabi Tel Aviv last week, the Spaniard was dropped for Sunday's match and was seen throwing his bib in the manager's direction in the closing stages of the 0-0 draw.

Ivanovic says it is natural for a player to be disappointed at missing a match, but believes that the squad dynamic is more important than a single player.

"We start the season as a team and we have to finish as a team. This is important," he is quoted as saying by The Guardian. "When we start losing, we all know it's not about the one or two players playing badly or playing well.

"It's about the team. Diego didn't play at Tottenham, but I know he'll be ready for the next game. He scored against Norwich – the winning goal – but it has to be all about the team in the moment.

"I think we all have to think about that. Sometimes, for a player who isn't playing, it's difficult but it is a normal situation for the club."

Chelsea sit 14th in the Premier League following a dismal start to the season, but the Serbian believes they are on the path to improvement.

"None of us expected this start to the season. It was a shock to all of us and it's taken time to react to everything that's happened," Ivanovic added.

"It's starting to build. Everyone can feel that and everyone can see that.

"I think the team spirit is back and we are all again on the right track and want to do everything to try and get points back.

"I never talk about where we will finish. We have to be realistic and go game by game to get the points."

Simeone open to January signings following Tiago injury

    diego-simeone-cropped_jfjiv11rm9zf1u0qg3arvnsr2.jpg

Diego Simeone says that while Atletico Madrid are always open to new signings, an injury to Tiago has increased their need to strengthen in January.

Club president Enrique Cerezo expects the Portuguese to be sidelined for at least three months after he sustained a broken leg in a 1-0 win over Espanyol on Saturday.

While Atletico are apparently ever-willing participants in mid-season transfer dealings, their Argentine coach admitted the blow could cause them to intensify their search for new additions to the squad.

"We are always open to any situation when the winter transfer window comes," Simeone said.

"It will not be an exception now, more so due to the absence of a player like Tiago."

A loss of experience in midfield is the coach's main concern, but he is comfortable with the options available in the short term.

"Clearly, it's hard to find another Tiago. At 34 years old there is experience that no-one has at 26 or 27," he said.

"We will work with the guys we have in that position: Koke, Saul, [Matias] Kranevitter, Gabi.

"We will work to see who does better."

Atletico travel to Catalunya to face Reus Deportiu in the first leg of a Copa del Rey fourth-round tie, and Simeone has insisted the visitors will not be taking the match lightly, despite going into the contest as heavy favourites.

"[Winning] the Copa was the beginning of very important things that have happened since," he said, referring to the club's success in the 2012-13 edition of the competition.

"It's not one game, it's two, but we will play with enthusiasm, excitement and great joy."

Neymar's Ballon d'Or place costs Barcelona €2 million

    2214962_heroa.jpg

Neymar's place in the three-man Ballon d'Or shortlist will cost Barcelona €2 million as part of their agreement with Santos.

The Brazilian makes up the three nominees alongside Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo following his stunning treble-winning year with Barcelona.

Neymar joined Barcelona in a €57.1m deal from Santos in June 2013 but a clause in that transfer also required the Spanish champions to pay a further €2m once the forward secured a place in the Ballon d'Or top three.

Earlier in November, speculation over the 23-year-old's future at Barcelona was heightened his father claimed that the possibility of a transfer could happen if his son's tax evasion case ended with an unwanted outcome.

A Brazilian court has frozen €42m worth of assets belonging to Neymar, his family and related businesses as the 23-year-old is alleged to have evaded €14m worth of taxes in Brazil from 2011 to 2013.

However, the forward, whose current deal worth €8.8m per season expires in 2018, insists he wants stay with Barca.

"I've still got years on my contract," the Brazil international said on Saturday.

"My father has already spoken about my future."We're talking about a renewal because my intention is to do so."

Ramos warns Barca: Good form won't last forever

    sergio-ramos-real-madrid_q7cwllhui87g1a5ijlbkymnn7.jpg

Sergio Ramos has fired a warning to La Liga leaders Barcelona, suggesting their good form cannot last forever.

The Catalan side won the treble last season and currently have a six-point lead over Real Madrid in the league following a four-goal Clasico win.

Over the last week they have hit the net 14 times, racking up consecutive wins against Madrid, Roma and Real Sociedad.

However, Ramos and Madrid were in a similar position at this point last season - winning 22 games in a row at one point - and the defender has told Luis Enrique’s side to enjoy their good form while they can.

“Football changes in a matter of hours and last season we ended the year really well and Barca were worse than us, but at the end of the season they won the treble,” the 29-year-old said at the La Liga awards on Monday.

“Now Barca are in good form, so let them enjoy it, because you never now how long it’ll last.

“You have to be prepared for both the praise and the criticism because, like I said, football is always changing.”

Ramos acknowledged that the Clasico defeat was a “big blow”, but believes Los Blancos took the first step towards turning the page on that loss with Sunday’s win over Eibar.

Prior to the La Liga awards, it was revealed that Lionel Messi, Neymar and Cristiano Ronaldo are the three finalists for this year’s Ballon d’Or.

The winner will be revealed at a gala in Zurich in January, but the Madrid captain wouldn’t be drawn on who he thinks deserves to claim the prize.

“It doesn’t depend on me,” he stated.

“I don’t know what criteria they use to judge it, but the three of them all deserve to be there.

“I have a little bit of healthy envy that I’ve not been able to experience a moment like [being a Ballon d’Or finalist], but all three are ready [to win it].”

:DFellaini stars for Man Utd U21s in five-goal thriller against Liverpool

    1910862_heroa.jpg

Marouane Fellaini scored one goal and provided the assist for two more as Manchester United Under-21s beat rivals Liverpool 3-2 on Monday evening.

The Belgian, who was an unused substitute as Louis van Gaal's side drew 1-1 with Leicester City at the King Power Stadium on Saturday, played the full 90 minutes at Leigh Sports Village, alongside goalkeeper Sergio Romero.

And it was Fellaini who opened the scoring from close range just past the half-hour mark, before Nick Powell followed up a shot from the midfielder to double his side's lead.

Jerome Sinclair pulled a goal back for Liverpool, who equalised late on after a Romero mistake allowed Madger Gomes to score.

But Fellaini turned provider as United first team hopeful Sean Goss scored with a well-taken finish in the final minute of normal time.

Messi beats Ronaldo to La Liga best player award

    2329302_heroa.jpg

Barcelona forward Lionel Messi has been named La Liga's best player of 2014-15 at the annual award ceremony on Monday.

The 28-year-old, who was named Goal 50 winner last week, saw off competition from Real Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldo to be crowned the best overall player in addition to the top forward in Spain.

Atletico Madrid's star player Antoine Griezmann and Barcelona veteran Andres Iniesta were pipped to the best midfielder award by James Rodriguez after he starred for Madrid following his 2014 move from Monaco.

The Colombian's Santiago Bernabeu team-mate, Sergio Ramos, beat Gerard Pique and Nicolas Otamendi to the award of the Spanish top flight's best defender last season.

Luis Enrique's achievements in guiding Barca to Liga success in his debut season earned him the accolade of best coach while his No.1 in La Liga, Claudio Bravo, was named best goalkeeper of 2014-15.

Without Messi for competition, Neymar was crowned the best South American player in La Liga last season ahead of Luis Suarez and James Rodriguez. Valencia midfielder Sofiane Feghouli was crowned the best African player in the division.
Despite being overlooked as best player and best forward, Ronaldo did at least win the fans' player of the year award - voted for on social media prior to the ceremony which the former Manchester United man did not attend.

    Best Goalkeeper: Claudio Bravo (Barcelona)
Best Defender: Sergio Ramos (Real Madrid)
Best Midfielder: James Rodriguez (Real Madrid)
    Best Forward: Lionel Messi (Barcelona)
    Best Coach: Luis Enrique (Barcelona)
    Best African: Sofiane Feghouli (Valencia)
    Best South American: Neymar (Barcelona)
Fans' Player: Cristiano Ronaldo (Real Madrid)
    Best Player: Lionel Messi (Barcelona)

Messi: Suarez deserved Ballon d'Or nomination

    luis-suarez-sergi-roberto-lionel-messi-athletic-bilbao-barcelona-la-liga-23082015_ouaj0fg4j2re1sb2fmfrzrlzf.jpg

Lionel Messi believes Barcelona team-mate Luis Suarez deserved to be named among the finalists for this year’s Ballon d’Or.

The Argentina international was named as one of the three players up for the prestigious individual prize on Monday, with Cristiano Ronaldo and Neymar the other two.

That meant there was no room for Suarez, the third member of Barca’s three-man attack.

Between them, they have scored 125 goals in 2015 so far, with the Uruguayan contributing 40 of them - including several important strikes as Barca clinched the treble last season.

“I’d have liked to be on Ballon d'Or podium with Ney and Luis,” Messi said at the La Liga awards ceremony on Monday night where he was named as the league’s best player for the 2014-15 campaign.

“Luis deserved it, but Cristiano did aswell - we'll have a good time [at the Fifa gala].”

In addition to his best player award, Messi also scooped the award for best forward in Spain’s top flight last season.
Accepting his trophies, he said: “I’d like to dedicate this award to my son, Thiago.

“When I leave home, he always gets mad and says: ‘Are you going to the goal again?’ Yes, I tell him, I’m going to the goal!

“I am grateful for these awards - after the season the team played, we deserved some recognition, maybe even a little more…”

Neymar, who was named La Liga’s best American player for the last season, also added his disappointment at seeing Suarez miss out on the final three for the Ballon d’Or.
“Being nominated for the Ballon d'Or means a lot,” the Brazilian said.

“Suarez should have been there as well, though - but Messi is the favourite, he's the number one for me.”

Former Liverpool forward Suarez responded with grace as he watched his two strike partners pocket awards and nominations throughout the day on Monday.

Writing on Twitter, he said: “Congratulations, friends!!!! Really proud of you. I’m really glad.”

Mata: No doubt Messi is the world's best player

Manchester United star Juan Mata is in "no doubt" that Lionel Messi deserved to win this year's Goal 50.

Barcelona star Messi claimed the prestigious prize for a record-breaking fourth time after beating Real Madrid rival Cristiano Ronaldo to top spot in our vote to determine the best player in the world over the past 12 months.

Mata sees the Argentina international as a most worthy recipient of the accolade, given the 28-year-old attacker played an integral role in his club's treble triumph last term.

"I think that because of Barcelona's great season when they won everything, including the Champions League, Leo Messi deserves to be the best player," the Spain international told Goal.

"After all he achieved, there's no doubt about that."

Moyes open to another European gig

    davidmoyes-cropped_1r2nnqhs1tqhm1tlujms526bd1.jpg

Former Real Sociedad coach David Moyes still harbours ambitions of coaching outside United Kingdom, despite his unsuccessful stint in La Liga.

Moyes was sacked by Sociedad following a 2-0 loss to promoted Las Palmas on November 9, a day short of being a year into the job.

The former Manchester United manager, however, remains undeterred by his experience in Spain, with the Scot open to another European adventure.

"I'm open-minded and Spain whetted my appetite," Moyes told BBC Radio 5 Live.

"If the right opportunities came up in the major leagues I'd be interested."

At the time of Moyes' departure, Sociedad were languishing in 16th position, just two points above the relegation zone after 11 rounds.

The 52-year-old won just 12 of his 42 games at Sociedad as a replacement for Jagoba Arrasate last year.

Moyes added: "I think the experience will help me.

"I gained great knowledge from my time there. It was great to experience what I did and I hope that will make me better.

"It's very difficult to compare the two leagues. The best teams are in Spain and many of the best players are in Spain."

Rooney reveals his most ANNOYING team-mate

    2330592_heroa.jpg

What’s Anders Lindegaard ever done to Wayne Rooney?!

The 31-year-old goalkeeper, who left Manchester United in the summer to join West Brom, apparently isn’t in the England captain’s good books.

In an interview with Sport magazine, Rooney was asked who would be his worst team-mate to be stuck in a lift with, his reply: “Anders Lindegaard. He’s just annoying.”

Rooney also named four-time Olympic gold medallist Michael Johnson as his favourite athlete who is not a footballer, while Cristiano Ronaldo (predictably) is the most talented person he's ever played with.

The 30-year-old also revealed The Walking Dead is the TV show he’s currently watching, while Johnny Bravo is his all-time favourite cartoon.

:shocked:Luca Zidane sent off after headbutt in Madrid derby

    2283412_heroa.jpg

Luca Zidane, the son of World Cup winner Zinedine Zidane, was sent off playing for Real Madrid's under-17s against their city rivals Atletico Madrid, after headbutting an opponent and then lashing out at the player in the ensuing melee.

In a scene reminiscent of his father's famous dismissal in the 2006 World Cup Final, the young Zidane took exception to the Atleti player, nudging him with the head and then following up by getting invoved in the mass brawl that then took place.

The Blancos day went from bad to worse as Atleti eventually triumphed 4-2, cementing their position at the top of the under-17 table, with the young Zidane watching on from the sidelines.

Luca is not the only Zidane offspring plying his trade in the Real youth teams, though, with Theo and Elyaz in the academy and Enzo captaining the Castilla side.

Milner eyes trophies at 'exciting' Liverpool

    jamesmilner-cropped_1dxkev2jgzc9u1pyzb5zbkllvh.jpg

Liverpool midfielder James Milner described the excitement at the club following their improved form under manager Jurgen Klopp.

Klopp's men have risen to sixth in the Premier League, advanced in the Europa League and face Southampton in the League Cup quarter-finals on Wednesday.

Vice-captain Milner said the atmosphere at Liverpool was much-improved as his side target trophies.

"It is a great time to be involved at the club. It is exciting times for everyone," the England international said.

"We have a talented squad of players, a great mix of youth and experience, obviously a new manager and the stadium is being upgraded as well.

"If we keep working hard, keep improving, keep doing our job then hopefully we can be successful.

"We just want to keep improving, playing as well as we can and getting the wins on the board and hopefully get into January and February and still be in all the cup competitions and give ourselves a shot in one of the cups, see where we are in the league and assess it from there."

In another boost for Liverpool, captain Jordan Henderson and forward Daniel Sturridge returned from injury off the bench in their 1-0 win over Swansea City on Sunday.

Milner said he was thrilled to have the pair back as his team prepare for four games in 12 days.

"It is massive. They are two top players and any team in the league would miss them, it is great they are back," he said.

"You look at the quality of the whole bench, look at the players we have injured, and as I said before you are going to need that with the amount of games we have coming up."

Moyes: Valencia job has come too soon for Neville

    philneville-cropped_mqwns9j7onm71cqwgypymfz1q.jpg

David Moyes is not sure whether Phil Neville is ready to take the reins as Valencia boss at this stage of his fledgling coaching career.

Moyes managed Neville at Everton before taking the former Manchester United defender back to Old Trafford to serve as part of the coaching staff during his wretched spell as United manager.

Neville moved to the Liga club during the close season and took training at Valencia on Monday following the resignation of Nuno Espirito Santo in the aftermath of the 1-0 weekend loss to Sevilla.

"I think Phil Neville will go on to be a manager in time," Moyes told the Sun – his own initial venture into Spanish football having ended when he was sacked by Real Sociedad last month.

"Whether he's quite ready just now I'm not too sure and I think he would admit to that.

"I think he thought by going to Valencia and working under Nuno for a year or so it would be good for his education. It was certainly good for mine.

"Phil will look forward to it because he's worked under myself, he's seen Nuno work and he's no slouch. He'll know what to do.

"He'll know how to organise and prepare a team well. But whether he goes on to be the manager is another thing."

Moyes is refusing to close the door on taking further jobs on the continent himself, despite a one-year spell in San Sebastian never fulfilling the promise of January's 1-0 victory over eventual Liga champions Barcelona.

"I'm definitely open minded and Spain whetted my appetite," he added. "If the right opportunities came up in the major leagues I'd be interested.

"I think the experience will help me. I gained great knowledge and contacts from my time there. It was great to experience what I did and I hope that will make me better."

Valencia travel to Barakaldo in the Copa del Rey on Wednesday for their first outing under interim coach Voro and Neville's guidance before hosting Barcelona on Saturday.

Van Gaal rips into McNair: He thought he was a striker against Leicester!

Louis van Gaal says that young Manchester United defender Paddy McNair almost gifted Leicester City victory on Saturday because he "thought he was a striker".

The Red Devils came from behind to salvage a 1-1 draw at the King Power Stadium as Jamie Vardy's record-breaking strike was cancelled out by Bastian Schweinsteiger's close-range header.

Van Gaal has been criticised frequently for his side's possession-based style and lack of excitement this season but he looks set to continue with that caution-first approach.

The Dutchman singled out McNair after the match for being too bold after he was caught upfield, with Leonardo Ulloa given the chance to run in behind and almost bag a winner.

"In the first half, we didn't dominate as much as we did in the second half," explained Van Gaal, "so, in the second half, I was waiting on our goal but it didn't come.

"They also had a good chance; we gave the ball away because McNair thought he was a striker at that moment and then the channels were open and they could run them."

It was the 20-year-old defender's first start of the season, partnering Chris Smalling in the heart of the defence, but he was unable to prevent Vardy from netting in his 11th straight match.
