:)Lingard has quick brain like Messi - Meulensteen

    jesse-lingard-cropped_1loe0qztl5yeg1u4ud3bo0owul.jpg

Former Manchester United youth coach and assistant manager Rene Meulensteen believes Jesse Lingard's physique will not prevent him from fulfilling his potential, as he has the "quick brain" that has helped diminutive players like Lionel Messi and Andres Iniesta become key figures at Barcelona.

Lingard, 22, has made the breakthrough into Louis van Gaal's starting XI at Old Trafford this season, making nine appearances in all competitions and impressing on the United flanks to earn an England international call-up.

Meulensteen was recently already quoted as saying that Lingard has the potential to become "the English Iniesta," and the Dutchman has now explained why he feels the midfielder has a bright future.

"People say Jesse is small because of the perception of how the Premier League is," Meulensteen told United's official website.

"But look at players like Iniesta, Xavi, Messi, David Silva and Juan Mata. They're all tiny, but it doesn't make a difference if you have a quick brain, quick feet and a big heart - and Jesse has all of those. He's bright, he's got great ability and skill.

"I always said to him: 'Watch as many Iniesta clips as you can,' because I see Jesse as the English version of Iniesta. He has a long way to go, but that is the sort of player I see in him."

World Cup holders Germany have dropped from second to fourth place in the latest Fifa world rankings, while Belgium end the year in top spot.

Marc Wilmots' men moved into first position for the first time in their history in November, and a 3-1 victory over Italy in Brussels saw them hold on to the coveted spot for the final ranking of the calendar year.

Argentina climbed one place to second at the expense of Germany, while Spain jumped from sixth to third.

Chile remain fifth, with Brazil (sixth, up two), Portugal (seventh, down three), Colombia (eighth, down one), England (ninth) and Austria completing the top 10.

Madrid will offer Cheryshev explanation on Thursday

    2292192_heroa.jpg

Real Madrid are swimming in a sea of phone calls, messages, questions and explanations on Thursday - all because on Wednesday they got themselves into a nonsensical situation by playing Denis Cheryshev in the Copa del Rey game against Cadiz.

Once the game was in progress it became public knowledge that he should have been suspended due to an accumulation of bookings in the same competition while on loan at Villarreal last season - Madrid acknowledged as much after the match at the Ramon de Carranza. There is now massive pressure on the club to give a justifiable explanation as to what happened, which is due to happen at 1930 CET.

At Valdebebas, the players still can’t quite believe the chain of events and are unable to completely digest the bizarre goings on in Andalusia. It was all they talked about on the way back to the Spanish capital from the game - and they were still talking about it at training on Thursday morning. The players don’t know how to explain it.

“It’s incredible,” one dressing room source told Goal, aware of the impact the error - from a club as big as Real Madrid - around the world. “It seems like a joke,” others have claimed internally, although all the players were much more careful when fulfilling their mixed zone and media duties after the 3-1 first leg win in Cadiz.

Higher up at the Santiago Bernabeu, the directors repeat the same faces and expressions, labelling the fiasco “incredulous”. But behind the scenes, there is a scramble to find out how a mistake of this magnitude was able to happen.

Juventus have a strong team, but Bayern's is even better - Vidal

    gfx-g50-arturo-vidal-goal-50_xgxxbv6zdnfn1qsi6gb9zyex7.jpg

Bayern Munich’s Arturo Vidal has no regrets about leaving Juventus in the summer, thanking God that he now plays for “better” side.

The Chilean international helped Juve to the league and cup double last season, while they were also beaten finalists in the Champions League.

However, that success didn’t prevent a player exodus, with Vidal departing the Italian club along with Carlos Tevez, Andea Pirlo and Kingsley Coman.

“Many things changed in my life - I was very happy at Juventus, but I’m feeling home here [in Munich],” Vidal said.

“I thank God that I’m here and I hope I will win important trophies with Bayern.

“Juve have a strong team, but Bayern's is even better - the best players in the world are playing here in Munich.

“I hope I am able to help the team."

Vidal was recently named as the seventh best player in the world in 2015 in the Goal 50, which was won by Barcelona star Lionel Messi.

The midfielder was delighted to feature so highly up the list.

He said: "I'm very happy, to be part of the best 50 players in the world. Many thanks for this award and many thanks to all my supporters.”

Muller demanding success beyond Guardiola reign

    thomasmuller-cropped_823kpigkbbsz1wbcvllno4e9d.jpg

Thomas Muller believes Bayern Munich's current Bundesliga dominance does not mean the club will be void of criticism if they fail to replicate their performances when Pep Guardiola eventually leaves the Bavarian club.

The Germany attacker admits he is a fan of the team's style of play under their Spanish coach, with Bayern already eight points clear at the summit after 14 matches.

Guardiola has frequently been linked to Manchester City when his contract expires at the end of the season and Muller, 26, hopes the team will continue to capitalise on their supremacy if the former Barcelona coach does exit the Allianz Arena.

"At the moment it just feels great. We have lots of fun in the team, but as well with the coaching staff and the coach," he said.

"If we would watch our games after we played them, it probably would be nice watching it.

"Of course you look at some parts, but you don’t watch the whole 90 minutes again. It is fun on the pitch. It is fun with our fans.

"I can understand if Pep sees it similar. But at a club like FC Bayern that won’t help us afterwards, if we can't go on like this without him [we'll be criticised].

"[If our form dips] in two months, you journalists won't stand in front of me and say: 'I liked your style of playing and because of that I won’t ask critical questions.'"

Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini remains under pressure to secure silverware at the Etihad Stadium despite signing a contract extension until 2017 in August.

Klopp: Origi must be patient despite hat-trick

    2338252_heroa.jpg

Jurgen Klopp has called on hat-trick hero Divock Origi to remain patient and keep on learning after the striker opened his Liverpool account in style.

Origi, 20, netted his first goals for Liverpool in their in 6-1 League Cup demolition of Southampton on Wednesday night, handing Klopp a realistic chance of lifting silverware in his first season in charge at Anfield.

The young Belgium international had struggled in front of goal in previous games, and Klopp said Origi still has some way to go before he is starting games week-in, week-out on Merseyside.

“We had a talk. We sat together; it’s not too often that we completely agree in each thing," Klopp said.

"I said: ‘You have to learn this, this and this, do this and don’t do difficult things’ and he said: ‘Yes, I know.’ He wants to show everything in the short time he’s playing, that’s normal.

"Everybody knew him before Liverpool bought him and everybody wanted him. He’s a really big talent. But he has to learn and he has to be patient, that’s the truth.

"In 10, 15 years when he looks back on his career he’ll have no idea about the games he didn’t make in this moment. We can take the time to train.

"[Southampton] he made his easiest game - only easy passes, [he] used his feet, [he] was in the game and [showed] good defending.

"It was really good. And he got some good crosses! It was really good from him but he’s still young and he has to learn.”

The win at St Mary's was Liverpool's seventh victory in eight games under Klopp, and set up a League Cup semi-final tie against Stoke City.

Hazard is happy at Chelsea, says brother

Eden Hazard is happy at Chelsea, believes the forward's brother, Thorgan, who insists that he has not heard of any problem between his elder sibling and manager Jose Mourinho.

The Blues star has struggled for form in what has been a dreadful season for the defending Premier League champions, who sit 14th in the table after 14 games.

The elder Hazard has failed to score in 21 appearances in all competitions and has been dropped by Mourinho on occasion. His difficulties have been surprising given that he won the PFA Player of the Year award last season as Chelsea eased to the title.

However, Thorgan - who left Chelsea for Borussia Monchengladbach earlier this year after failing to make the grade at Stamford Bridge - has no reason to believe that Eden is unhappy.
He told Omnisport: "Until now, he never said he was unhappy so I think he's happy. He's part of one of the best clubs in the world, he won many titles last year... this year it's a bit more difficult but it's football; every player, every club, goes through hard times.

"I think he's happy but you need to ask him, I can't answer for him.

"I think he already proved last year that [Mourinho] worked really well with Eden and Eden worked really well with Mourinho.

"I know that journalists like it when it's not going well - they are looking for problems - but I never heard there was a problem between Mourinho and Eden. If some journalists hear that there are problems, they hear it, but I never heard about it."

Gary Neville: I'm not bringing Manchester United style to Valencia

    2342782_heroa.jpg

Gary Neville insists he will not try to replicate Sir Alex Ferguson's Manchester United style of football in his new role as coach of Valencia.

The former Red Devils captain has been put in charge of the Spanish side until the end of the season and he has admitted that his experience playing under Ferguson would be "invaluable" in his first role at the helm of a club.

Neville is determined to adapt to the players at his disposal, however, and says it would be insulting to arrive in Spain talking about how things are done at United.

"I'm not going to insult Valencia by saying I'm coming over here and playing football like Manchester United," Neville told reporters.

"My experience with Sir Alex Ferguson is invaluable but when you talk about style it will be very different against Barcelona at the weekend to against Lyon [in the Champions League] next week.

"Every coach wants to play attacking football to entertain the fans but we've also got to find a way to win."

Neville was also uninterested in discussing any long-term ambitions of taking charge at Old Trafford.

The 40-year-old has become the bookmakers' third favourite, behind Pep Guardiola and Ryan Giggs, to take over from Louis van Gaal since his appointment at Valencia was confirmed.

"From a long-term perspective I would never look at that or future jobs," he insisted. "I'm focused completely on the next two training sessions and the team to pick for Wednesday.

"We all have dreams but the only way you get there is focusing on the individual bits one at a time."

Neville, who confirmed that former Valencia star Miguel Angel Angulo would join his coaching staff, wants to restore Mestalla's status as one of Europe's most intimidating venues.

"I understand, from playing against Valencia, the passion and intimidation of the fans and I want to recreate and harness that," he said.

"I'm aware of the traditions here at Valencia - I've played out here a few times against some fantastic wingers.
"I understand my responsibility is to appraise the players as quickly as possible and pick the right system that gets us winning matches right away, irrespective of style.

"On Sunday afternoon when I received this offer it represented a challenge that I couldn't refuse."

When asked how he would balance managing Valencia with his continued role with the England national team, Neville explained: "When I spoke to Roy Hodgson he was incredibly supportive and positive and enthusiastic.

"He understood completely the opportunity for myself and was wholly supportive that I should do it. We've got two games in March which are in an international break, when Valencia don't play.

"From my point of view, I wanted to continue to complete my job through to Euro 2016 and everyone is completely understanding that Valencia will be my priority 95 per cent of the time."

Vardy good enough for Champions League, says Fleetwood chairman

    jamie-vardy-cropped_1lo75eler0py015yapewdietqr.jpg

Fleetwood Town chairman Andy Pilley believes their former striker Jamie Vardy deserves the chance to play in the Champions League following his sensational start to the season for Leicester City.

Vardy helped Fleetwood win promotion to the Football League before joining the Foxes, who he fired into the top flight and has now led into contention for a place in Europe's top competition.

The 28-year-old has scored in 11 consecutive Premier League games, breaking a record set by Ruud van Nistelrooy, and Pilley admits he has proved to be an even better player than he thought.

"I thought he'd be a Premier League player," he told Omnisport. "We thought he could play for his country, which is why we put a clause in his contract, we really thought he was that good.

"But I did not expect him to break Van Nistelrooy's record. We knew he was a brilliant, brilliant player but what he's achieved is exceptional.

"I think what Jamie's done in the game now, I think he deserves the opportunity to pit his wits in the Champions League and I think he's worthy of playing for one of the top three or four clubs in England and also playing for his national team.

"So I'd love to see him get his chance to play for one of the really big teams.

"Initially we only had Championship clubs scouting him when Jamie started scoring goals, but eventually when word got out that he was scoring every week the Premier League clubs started having a look then."

Pilley says Vardy's rise has proven the potential of players released by top clubs who fall into non-league football.

"I've seen lots of football movies and they're fantasy," he added. "This is a true story and who's to say the journey's complete yet? I think what he's achieved is nothing short of remarkable.

"It's extraordinary, it's a real rag to riches tale and I think it would be well-received globally.

"I think it should motivate all non-league players or young players or players who have been rejected by the club that they've featured for in the academy.

"It shows that dreams do come true in football and the future's what you make it. Vardy's not felt sorry for himself, he's buckled down, he's screwed the nut and he's a real life Roy of the Rovers.

"I think he's very confident, great self-belief. We knew he was good, but we didn't realise how exceptional he was. That soon became apparent as soon as the second game, he might have scored a hat-trick actually.

"He is a fantastic player who changed this club forever. He played a huge part in getting us into the Football League and the difference between being in the league and non-league is night and day.

"Without Jamie, it's questionable whether we would have achieved that or not."

Costa: Guardiola is the world's best coach, I learn from him every day

    douglas-costa-bayern-munich-koln-bundesliga-24102015_1zqa3xqnvev7193rs3bmw2ras.jpg

Douglas Costa believes Pep Guardiola is the best coach in the world and says he tries to learn something from the Bayern Munich boss every day.

The winger joined the Bundesliga giants from Shakhtar Donetsk in the summer and has enjoyed a fine start to life in Germany, sitting joint top of the league's assist charts with seven and two goals in 12 games.

And Costa has hailed the influence of his new coach as a big factor in his devastating form for Bayern.

"Everyday that I can spend with Pep Guardiola is educational for me," he told Sport1. "When I'm at his side, I try to learn something new everyday.

"Pep Guardiola is the best coach in the world. The communication with him is great and there has been no problem from the first minute."

Costa spent five years at Shakhtar and won five league titles, three domestic cups and three Supercups but he feels he will have a better chance of realising his ambitions with Bayern.

"I felt good in Ukraine, but in relation to my sporting goals and prospects compared with Bayern, I have to say, I have more in five months at Bayern than five years in Donetsk," the 25-year-old said.

"I never really had the dream of becoming a professional footballer. I only started playing at nine years of age. It was actually a great passion of my father who wasn't a professional. But this inspired and pushed me on.

"It was a fulfillment for me and my father because now I've managed it and we are both very happy that it has happened."

Wenger: I don't know how long Alexis & Cazorla will be out

    alexis-cropped_tdzi49d5bkkl10air7njaeyud.jpg

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has admitted he does not know how long star duo Alexis Sanchez and Santi Cazorla will be out for after suffering injuries against Norwich City.

Goal understands Cazorla is facing three months on the sidelines after scans revealed he had sustained knee ligament damage in the 1-1 draw on Sunday.

The Gunners are hopeful that Alexis, meanwhile, will only miss a month as they assess the extent of his hamstring injury.

"At the moment on Alexis, Santi and Mikel [Arteta], we don't know how long they will be out for," Wenger told Arsenal's official website.

"It is always a disappointment to lose the players at an important moment of the season. But on the other hand, it is a great opportunity to show that we are ready for a fight and we can deal with it."

Kieran Gibbs (calf) is fit for Saturday's league match at home to Sunderland, while Laurent Koscielny (hip) and Theo Walcott (calf) are in contention to make the matchday squad.

Wenger added: "We will make a decision on Saturday on Koscielny and Walcott - they could both make the squad. Kieran Gibbs is available again for the weekend."

Villarreal hit back at Real Madrid over Cheryshev: He's not our responsibility!

Villarreal president Fernando Roig has hit back at Real Madrid regarding Denis Cheryshev's Copa del Rey suspension, insisting they are not to blame for the confusion.

Rafael Benitez included the midfielder in his starting XI for Wednesday's 3-1 win over Cadiz on Wednesday, and he had an immediate impact as he opened the scoring after just three minutes.

However, it later emerged that the 24-year-old was ineligible for the tie, having been suspended for being booked three times in last season's competition during his time at Villarreal.
Madrid president Florentino Perez insists the club have done nothing wrong as neither Villarreal nor the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) made them aware of his suspension prior to the midweek game.

But Yellow Submarine chief Roig insists his club have nothing to do with it as Cheryshev is no longer their player.

"We aren't responsible for players who are not in our squad," he told reporters. "Villarreal is quiet, we have no responsibility. We are responsible for our players, no one else's.

"I'm not going to judge Florentino. We have outstanding people who control our sanctions, I don't now what other clubs have.

"We have Tomas Pina in the same situation, he was sent off in the same game that Cheryshev was booked and he was not allowed to play on Thursday.

"We don't have a responsibility for Cheryshev."

Arsenal not interested in Stones - Wenger

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has denied the club are interested in signing Everton defender John Stones to help cover their injury crisis.

Wenger could welcome centre-back Laurent Koscielny into his matchday squad for Saturday's visit of Sunderland but will be without the likes of Alexis Sanchez, Santi Cazorla and Francis Coquelin.

The Frenchman has often been accused of being overly cautious in the transfer market - notably failing to sign an outfield player during the most recent window.
And amid reports he had requested the arrival of Stones from Goodison Park, Wenger said: "No, I asked my players to focus on tomorrow's game. I didn't ask anything of the board.

"It's not the board who buys the players - we are not after John Stones if that's what you want to know, we are focused on tomorrow's game.

"We are in December and our focus is on tomorrow's game. I gave an answer last week that we will be open and look at outside but at the moment what is more important is to show how strong we are.

"Your phone is busy every day with people proposing players, That's an aspect where we have a team to select what's coming in and what we see.

"We are organised on that front. I am so used to [transfer pressure] that I don't feel what is pressure and what is extra pressure. I think you just want to do well and make right decisions for the club and the team.

Rooney to miss West Ham game with 'nasty' injury

    2330592_heroa.jpg

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has confirmed that Wayne Rooney will miss the Red Devils' game against West Ham due to a "nasty" ankle injury.

The England captain was forced off during Saturday's match against Leicester City and Van Gaal says that the problem is worse than originally thought, meaning he is likely to miss their Champions League match with Wolfsburg.

"The injury of Wayne Rooney is more heavy than we thought," he told MUTV.

"It's a nasty injury. When we go on, it's been getting worse. We have to let him train to make the ankle stronger; that's very important. I cannot say [for how long he will be out] because the doctor shall decide that with Wayne, of course. He is training well in the rehabilitation."

When asked in his subsequent media conference if Rooney is out of Tuesday's crucial clash against Wolfsburg, Van Gaal replied: "Yes, I think so."

The United boss also explained that defender Marcos Rojo is out of the match after injuring his shoulder in training, while Ander Herrera and Phil Jones remain sidelined.

Young forward Jesse Lingard, however, is fit to return to the side as he seeks to make his 10th appearance of what is becoming a breakthrough season at Old Trafford.

"It's [Rojo's] shoulder, the same as last year, in a training session. It's very unfortunate, also in the positon of Luke Shaw so I have a great problem," Van Gaal continued. "Lingard is coming back, which is good. Jones is still injured so we have six injuries."

With absentees piling up, the Dutchman admits that he has been resting his players a lot in order to keep them fresh ahead of the busy Christmas period.

"The week after next, we have two weeks that we can have more recovery," he noted. "I have already given the players two days off this week.

"I'm giving them a lot of rest because I think it's necessary. Nevertheless, we have six injuries, most of which are contact injuries. You cannot avoid those because football is a sport with direct resistance. We are unlucky, I have to say."

Mourinho: Costa reaction has been excellent

    jose-mourinho-diego-costa-cropped_197iughhlj2sv1t6gajhy7ffag.jpg

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has applauded Diego Costa's reaction to being dropped from the starting line-up last weekend.

The striker was benched against Tottenham and reacted petulantly to not being brought on as a substitute, throwing his bib towards Mourinho, but the Portuguese says he has no issues with the Brazilian-born Spain striker.

"I cannot tell you if Diego Costa will be back in the starting line-up as I haven't told the players," Mourinho told reporters on Friday.

"Costa has been very good – I cannot say better than ever, normally he trains well, that's the only thing that matters."

Costa's benching followed an angry disagreement with Mourinho during the 4-0 Champions League win at Maccabi Tel Aviv, with the Portuguese admitting he was unhappy with the 27-year-old's movement before claiming they had made up with 'kisses and cuddles'.

The former Atletico Madrid forward has since been linked with a move away from Stamford Bridge but Mourinho dismissed specualtion about Costa's future.

"I don't know why there are question marks about his future as a Chelsea player. He was on the bench for one match. No problems, no problems at all," he added.

"I think he always tries to do his best – sometimes phenomenal, sometimes not so well. He always tries hard – sometimes with goals and good performances, sometimes not so good."

In Costa's absence, Pedro and Eden Hazard rotated as a false nine at White Hart Lane but Mourinho expects to welcome back Loic Remy for Saturday's home match with Bournemouth, following the birth of the Frenchman's child.

Remy has not started a league game since the draw with Newcastle in September.

Courtois in Chelsea squad for Bournemouth clash - Mourinho

Thibaut Courtois has been included in the Chelsea squad for Saturday's game with Bournemouth after three months out with a knee injury, manager Jose Mourinho has announced.

The Belgium goalkeeper has not appeared for Chelsea since the 2-1 home defeat to Crystal Palace in late August but has trained well this week and will be involved at the weekend.

"Thibaut was our keeper all last season and you know how fundamental he was. It's important to have him back," Mourinho told a media conference.

Asked whether he would start, Mourinho added: "I've not told them [the players] so they must know first but he's in the group.

"He's has been out a long, long time, too long. So now we feel better. We have [Asmir] Begovic and Marco Amelia and now we are safe."
There was less positive news elsewhere on the injury front for Chelsea with John Terry, Ramires and Radamel Falcao all absent for the clash with a Bournemouth side sitting in the relegation zone.

Mourinho now has a choice to make with Begovic impressing in Courtois' absence despite Chelsea's poor start to the season.

"Courtois is Courtois," the manager said. "To lose him for a few matches [is tough] but we knew we had good protection.

"Nineteen matches without the best goalkeeper in the world was hard for us but now we are in a good situation. The best and very good."

Wenger: I do not listen to Henry

    2346232_heroa.jpg

Arsene Wenger has brushed aside criticism of his management by Arsenal favourite Thierry Henry, insisting he doesn't listen to his former striker.

Henry spent eight seasons with the Gunners, winning two Premier League titles and three FA Cups under Wenger and establishing himself as arguably the finest player in the club's illustrious history.

Since retiring, the Frenchman has turned his hand to punditry and he has not been shy of criticising his former club in his role for Sky Sports.

In his latest rebuke, Henry blamed Arsenal for overworking Alexis Sanchez, who picked up a hamstring injury in Sunday's 1-1 draw with Norwich City.

Wenger, however, is unconcerned by Henry's comments, hinting that the World Cup winner is speaking for the sake of it.

When asked by French daily Le Parisien if he is annoyed by Henry's punditry, Wenger replied: "Not at all! That is the job of a pundit. He needs to say something. Personally, I do not listen to what he says."

Henry, who also played for Monaco, Juventus, Barcelona and New York Red Bulls, has been tipped as a possible successor to Wenger when the 66-year-old finally retires.

While Wenger did not comment on his possible replacements at the Emirates Stadium, he admitted it would be 'difficult' for him to manage another club.

"It seems to me that it would be difficult, I am 66. I still have a year and a half left on my contract, I will see what happens after. One small step after the other, it is more like that, the way I operate at the moment," he added.
