Sunderland 0-1 Watford: Ighalo on target again for Hornets

    2390432_heroa.jpg

Odion Ighalo's early goal was enough to see Watford secure a 1-0 victory at Sunderland on Saturday and rise to seventh place in the Premier League.

The Nigeria striker proved a nuisance throughout, with his ability on the ball constantly troubling the Sunderland defence, and some clever movement in the fourth minute made the difference when he turned in Allan Nyom's low cross.

Ighalo, who became the first player to reach double figures in a single Premier League season for Watford, almost grabbed another but saw his attempt cleared off the line just a few seconds before the post denied Jose Manuel Jurado.

Sunderland managed to gain some composure as the first period progressed and then started the second half on top, putting the Hornets under significant pressure.

That superiority ultimately came to little, though, as Watford defended excellently and sought opportunities on the counter-attack, holding out for all three points to edge towards the top five.

Sunderland's DeAndre Yedlin insisted in the build-up that promoted Watford were "very beatable" but the visitors' start did little to back up the American's claim.

Jurado fed the surging Nyom on the right and the defender's low cross was expertly turned in by the in-form Ighalo under pressure from Sebastian Coates.

Sunderland somehow avoided going two down six minutes later with Ighalo their chief tormentor again. He brilliantly turned John O'Shea before seeing an effort blocked on the line by Coates, Jurado striking the post in the ensuing penalty area scramble.

Clearly unimpressed with his team's start, Sunderland boss Sam Allardyce hauled off Yedlin after just 19 minutes, but that did not stop Watford carving through them again just before the half-hour mark when Etienne Capoue tested Costel Pantilimon from 20 yards.

The home side eventually settled and created their first chance of note with 43 minutes gone, as Heurelho Gomes was forced into action to prevent a headed own-goal from Watford centre-back Miguel Britos following Yann M'Vila's fine left-wing delivery.

Sunderland's improvement was not halted by the half-time break and only the sprawling Gomes kept Watford's lead intact in the 53rd minute, the Brazilian stopping Jack Rodwell's 30-yard drive.

Watford remained stubborn defensively and let little else through, with Gomes staying largely untroubled despite the hosts' superiority in possession.

Sunderland looked at their most threatening from distance and the lively Duncan Watmore did go close in the 79th minute but his powerful effort flew just wide.

Gomes then produced another fine save to push Jermain Defoe's shot wide of the post before the former Tottenham striker glanced Patrick van Aanholt's volleyed centre inches off target shortly.

As Sunderland pushed forward, Watford found space at the other end and only a low block from Pantilimon prevented Ighalo from adding another in the closing seconds.

Manchester City 2-1 Swansea: Late drama as Iheanacho rescues hosts

    2390352_heroa.jpg

A deflected injury-time winner gave Manchester City a fortunate 2-1 Premier League win over Swansea City in a thrilling finish at the Etihad Stadium.

Playing their first game since the sacking of Garry Monk, who was dismissed on Wednesday following a miserable run of form that had seen them claim just one win in 11 league games, Swansea produced a battling performance worthy of at least a point.

However, one of their former players Wilfried Bony put caretaker manager Alan Curtis' men seemingly on course for defeat with a 26th-minute header.

Substitute Bafetimbi Gomis levelled for Swansea as he lashed into the top corner at the near post in the final minute of normal time.

But there was one last twist in the tale as Yaya Toure's curling effort took a huge deflection off Kelechi Iheanacho and looped into the net.

The victory sends City at least temporarily back to the top of the table while Swansea remain a point above the relegation zone.

City found it difficult to create chances in the early stages against a well-organised Swansea side that, after Bony had tested Lukasz Fabianski at the other end, went close to taking the lead in the 14th minute through Gylfi Sigurdsson.

Sigurdsson forced Joe Hart to turn his effort over following good work down the right from Wayne Routledge, but Swansea's efforts in keeping City at bay were undone shortly after the midway point in the first half.

Bony escaped some poor marking to find space in the box and met a corner from Jesus Navas - brought in for Fabian Delph by Manuel Pellegrini - with a powerful close-range header to net his second goal in as many games.

Swansea winger Andre Ayew was unfortunate not to provide an instant response as his headed effort from Sigurdsson's free-kick flew narrowly over.

Raheem Sterling was replaced by Delph at the break but it was another midfielder in Toure who almost made it 2-0 in the 50th minute, the Ivorian's curling free-kick drawing a strong diving save from Fabianski.

City remained vulnerable at the back and Hart was needed again to deny the impressive Sigurdsson at the near post after the Iceland international had latched on to Jack Cork's throughball.

Hart was then required to get down to his right to keep out a low Sigurdsson free-kick but was finally beaten as Gomis pounced on some dreadful defending in emphatic fashion.

Yet Swansea were cruelly denied in the second minute of added time, Iheanacho's goal providing relief for City as they ground out a win that puts pressure on their rivals at the top.

Crystal Palace 1-0 Southampton: Cabaye fires Eagles into top six

    2390502_heroa.jpg

Yohan Cabaye fired Crystal Palace into the top six of the Premier League as Alan Pardew's side saw off Southampton 1-0 on Saturday.

The midfielder struck his fifth goal of the season, seven minutes before the break, after fine approach work from Yannick Bolasie. The win was Palace's first over the visitors in 13 league meetings dating back to 1991 and Alan Pardew's men were well worth the points at Selhurst Park.

Southampton did create several decent chances in the first half, but found themselves on the back foot for long periods as their winless run in all competitions was extended to five games.

The hosts, meanwhile, secured back-to-back home league victories for the first time since April 2014 and remain very much in contention for a Europa League place. Both sides struggled to adapt to the blustery conditions during the early exchanges and clear-cut chances were consequently very much at a premium.

The first effort on target finally arrived on 21 minutes, with Paulo Gazzaniga, surprisingly selected ahead of Kelvin Davis to replace Maarten Stekelenburg, called upon to keep out a fine strike from Bolasie. And the Argentinian followed that spectacular save with a further two within the next minute, denying Cabaye and Connor Wickham.

Having come close to breaking the deadlock, Palace were then very nearly stung on the break as Sadio Mane released Shane Long, but the Irishman's attempted curler sailed high and wide.

While it was the hosts who continued to dominate possession, they enjoyed another let-off on the half-hour mark. Steven Davis climbed above Scott Dann to meet a superb cross from Cedric Soares, but Wayne Hennessey somehow clawed the Northern Irishman's header over the bar.Eight minutes later, however, Palace responded with the goal that their dominance warranted.

The lively Bolasie burst into the box, whipped in a low cross and Southampton's defence was conspicuous by its absence as Cabaye was left completely unmarked to sidefoot home from close-range.

Bolasie continued to torment the visitors as Palace began the second half on the front foot, stabbing another dangerous ball across the face of goal on 48 minutes which Wickham was just unable to slide home.

Southampton gradually began to force their way back into the contest and carved out a decent shooting opportunity on 67 minutes, but Davis was wasteful as he fired straight at Hennessey.

Ronald Koeman threw Dusan Tadic and Graziano Pelle into the fray late on, but Hennessey yet again came to Palace's rescue.

Long's fierce stoppage-time strike was palmed away by the Welshman before the Irishman flashed a header across the face of goal from the resulting corner, leaving Saints looking over their shoulders in the bottom half of the table, while Palace march on.

Barcelona 2-2 Deportivo: Catalans throw away lead to draw

    2391392_heroa.jpg

Two goals in the final 13 minutes saw Deportivo La Coruna come from behind to stun La Liga leaders Barcelona in a 2-2 draw at Camp Nou.

Deportivo were the last side to deny the champions a home league win on the final day of last season and they kept the hosts frustrated early on before Lionel Messi's brilliant free-kick broke the deadlock.

Jonathan Rodriguez spurned a couple of half-chances on the break, but Barca's second goal looked inevitable, even after Luis Suarez's finish after the interval was ruled out for a marginal offside.Ivan Rakitic duly doubled the lead with a ferocious strike just past the hour mark as Barca began to cruise to what seemed an ultimately straightforward victory.

But Deportivo, who have lost just once away from home so far this season, grabbed a lifeline through top scorer Lucas Perez in the 77th minute and he set up Alex Bergantinos to rifle in an equaliser with just four minutes to play.

Atletico Madrid and rivals Real will now hope to capitalise on Barca's slip-up when they take on Athletic Bilbao and Villarreal respectively on Sunday.

Suarez volleyed wide and Messi saw a free-kick saved as Barca controlled the opening quarter, but Claudio Bravo was called upon to make a smart stop at his near post after Jonathan raced through on the break for Deportivo.

Messi drew another good stop from German Lux with a curling effort before Suarez headed a Dani Alves cross over as Barca kept the visitors pinned in their own half.

But Lux could do nothing to prevent Messi giving the home side the lead six minutes before the break, as the Argentina captain curled a stunning free-kick into the top corner from an almost identical position to his earlier saved effort.

Deportivo began the second half much more brightly, with Jonathan missing two presentable openings, but the visitors had another let-off as Andres Iniesta's clipped cross came back off the crossbar.

Suarez's tap-in was ruled out for offside, but Rakitic gave Barca the cushion they wanted after 62 minutes, blasting the ball into the bottom-right corner having been given time and space 20 yards out.

Messi released Suarez for a third, but the Uruguay striker's poked effort was saved comfortably by Lux, before substitute Cardoso fired wide following another break.

Deportivo themselves had a goal ruled out after Lucas Perez headed in a rebound only to see the offside flag raised, but hopes of a comeback were rekindled in the closing stages as the 27-year-old placed a shot past Bravo following Cardoso's throughball into the box.

Faycal Fajr curled wide from distance, but Bergantinos swept a superb shot from the right of the area beyond Bravo's despairing dive following another fast break led by Perez, with Barca held to just a second league draw of the season in dramatic fashion.

    Iniesta: Barcelona lost control

    andres-iniesta-cropped_39on83hgwin51fppicvzd152f.jpg

Andres Iniesta admitted Barcelona "lost control" after they threw away a two-goal lead to draw 2-2 with Deportivo La Coruna.

The Liga leaders were 2-0 up against Victor Sanchez's side thanks to impressive strikes from Lionel Messi and Ivan Rakitic, but shipped two late goals at Camp Nou.

After Santi Mina's 86th-minute strike for Valencia cost Barca a win last weekend too, Iniesta believes they must work to cut out such errors.

"The end is unexplainable, we lost control when we needed it and facilitated the opposition," he told Canal Plus.

"These things happen, we analyse it so that it doesn't happen again. The last two weeks we've lost four points, which makes things tighter.

"Now we change mindset because we are playing for a title and have to think of what's next.

"We had a 2-0 lead, the match was good. We lost the control we had throughout the match and two points escaped us."

Atletico Madrid could move level with Barca at the Liga summit if they overcome Atheltic Bilbao on Sunday.

Guardiola: Ingolstadt the best team Bayern have faced this season

    gladbach-bayern-pep-guardiola_1ph7613yhitg81wifz2gbalkf5.jpg

Bayern Munich coach Pep Guardiola feels Ingolstadt are the toughest opponents his side have faced so far this season.

Ralph Hasenhuttl's side pressed high up the pitch and limited their Bavarian rivals' opportunities in the first half, but goals from Robert Lewandowski and Philipp Lahm earned the Spaniard's side a 2-0 win at the Allianz Arena.Guardiola was thoroughly impressed by the tactics Ingolstadt deployed, but felt the superior quality of his squad proved the difference.

"A big compliment to my team, but also to Ralph and Ingolstadt for their courageous game," he told reporters"We played against the best team we have met this season.

"We had problems in our set-up for a long time which improved with [the introduction of] Thiago [in the second half]. In the end, our quality has prevailed."
Lahm believes Bayern must learn from the scare Ingolstadt provided them with, though he admits injuries have not helped.

"They put us under pressure right from the start. We did not play with energy," he said."We can learn from this. We must always go into the game with energy and willingness

"We have a number of injuries and cannot rotate the way we want, but this should not be.

Pellegrini: Man City didn't deserve to beat Swansea

    manuelpellegrini-cropped_1bnve1vy70iq8100uj94bbwxgc.jpg

Manuel Pellegrini admitted Manchester City did not deserve to beat Swansea City following their 2-1 Premier League victory on Saturday.

Having seen Wilfried Bony's 26th-minute header cancelled out by Bafetimbi Gomis' 90th-minute equaliser, City appeared set to drop two points at the Etihad Stadium.

But Pellegrini's men snatched the three points courtesy of a huge slice of luck in the second minute of stoppage time when Yaya Toure's shot deflected in off Kelechi Iheanacho.

"Once again this team demonstrated character to go to try to win the game," Pellegrini told Sky Sports. "We really didn't play well during the whole game, I think that Swansea made a very good game.

"I was worried before the game because I knew that three of our players were not 100 per cent recovered, especially Kevin [De Bruyne] that couldn't play, David [Silva] that could play just 60 minutes and after you have an important achievement as we did in the week [in the Champions League], also to restart the motivation in this game is not easy.

"Maybe we didn't deserve to have the points, but I think that these points maybe replace the three points we lost against West Ham where we had at least 18 or 20 chances to score."It was a very important week, a very critical moment in the Premier League because we played very bad against Stoke [in a 2-0 defeat] and [it was] a very important achievement to finish at the top of the group in the Champions League.

"So I think that it was very important we finish here with the win and the three points - now we have a complete week to recover and I'm sure the performance of the team will be better against Arsenal."

:(:(:(Bournemouth 2-1 Manchester United: Cherries increase the heat on Van Gaal

    2391942_heroa.jpg

Manchester United slumped to their second defeat in four days as they were downed by newly promoted Bournemouth, who richly deserved a famous 2-1 victory.

After just two minutes Junior Stanislas opened the scoring with a curling corner, that eluded David De Gea and entered the net to the delight of the home crowd.

United responded well to going behind and Anthony Martial wasted a great chance before Marouane Fellaini made it 1-1 by half-time with a scrappy equaliser.

But after falling behind for a second time to King's effort, United struggled in the opposition half and substitute Glenn Murray wasted a gilt-edged chance to put the game beyond doubt.

It mattered little, though, as a jubilant home crowd celebrated three valuable points, while Van Gaal is now sure to come under further scrutiny after a fifth succesive game without a win in all competitions.

With Chris Smalling and Matteo Darmian joining a growing United injury list, youngsters Cameron Borthwick-Jackson and Guillermo Varela made their first Premier League starts in a makeshift defence.

Bournemouth made life difficult for the visitors from the off, but the opener came in unusual circumstances as Stanislas' whipped corner from the left sailed over David de Gea into the far corner.

United's riposte was impressive and Artur Boruc made a fine double save to keep out Fellaini's point-blank volley before tipping Paddy McNair's follow-up header wide.

Martial then wastefully side-footed wide after pouncing on Stanislas' reckless backpass, but United were level in the 24th minute. Michael Carrick's excellent pass over the top was prodded against Boruc by Memphis Depay and Fellaini was on hand to bundle in the rebound.

Van Gaal was forced into a change just past the half-hour mark when Jesse Lingard limped off to be replaced by Andreas Pereira to deepen their injury woes.
The second half burst into life in the 53rd minute when Simon Francis did brilliant to ghost through the United defence and force De Gea into a near-post save.

And from the resulting corner Ritchie kept his delivery low and King moved into space to steer home from close range, with no visiting defender close enough to stop him.

United struggled to muster a response and Murray should have made it 3-1 when he did brilliantly to jink inside McNair only to blaze a half-volley wildly over, while he was similarly wayward with another effort soon after.

Those misses did not prove costly, though, as Bournemouth saw out the remaining minutes with little cause for alarm, moving above champions Chelsea and into 14th.

Luis Enrique: Barcelona could have lost

    luis-enrique-cropped_bpve12spc7h21uh1grfab7wit.jpg

Luis Enrique admitted Barcelona could have been beaten by Deportivo La Coruna in La Liga on Saturday.

The Catalan giants let a 2-0 lead slip at home to Victor Sanchez's side, with Lucas Perez's 77th-minute strike added to by Alex Bergantinos with four minutes remaining as the Galician outfit earned a draw.

Barca let a late equaliser slip against Valencia last weekend and, although Luis Enrique felt they played better at Camp Nou, the head coach thought they could even have lost.

"There aren't similarities between the Mestalla and today," Luis Enrique said.

"In Valencia we were infinitely better, but today, with a little more bad luck, we could even have lost."We maybe had difficulties in the first half, but in the second there were chances to score.

"We controlled the game until the 72nd minute, when we made several mistakes.
"The first goal made the opponent braver. Munir [El Haddadi] had a clear opportunity that would have closed the game, but he failed."

    Pique: Arbeloa isn't a friend

    gerard-pique-barcelona-deportivo-la-coruna-la-liga_14vlgpsicdkyt183h4olfhq3a6.jpg

Barcelona defender Gerard Pique says Alvaro Arbeloa isn't a friend and is merely "someone he knows" following his Twitter spat with the Real Madrid man.

Madrid have been thrown out of the Copa del Rey after fielding a suspended player, Denis Cheryshev, in the first leg of their last-32 clash against Cadiz.

Pique responded to that news by posting a series of emoticons crying with laughter on his Twitter page.

Arbeloa replied saying he would "see him in a comedy club talking about Madrid" in the years to come and Pique made it clear the pair are far from close.

"Arbeloa said he was my friend, but I don't consider him my friend, maybe someone I know, but not my friend," he said.
Pique was talking after Barcelona drew 2-2 with Deportivo La Coruna at Camp Nou on Saturday afternoon.

Goals from Lionel Messi and Ivan Rakitic had given the Catalans a 2-0 lead, but the visitors produced a stunning comeback to claim a point.

Brilliant Bayern Munich set ANOTHER record

    2390702_heroa.jpg

Bayern Munich continued their title charge and set yet another record by beating Ingolstadt 2-0 at the Allianz Arena on Saturday.

Pep Guardiola's men are the first team in Bundesliga history to lead the league table at the winter break for five seasons in a row.

In 2011-12, Borussia Dortmund reeled them in to win their second consecutive title but in all three seasons since, Bayern have gone on to claim the championship - and once again it would take a brave man to bet against them.

Second-place Dortmund have a game in hand and face Eintracht Frankfurt on Sunday but for now, Bayern lead the Bundesliga by eight points.

Set-plays cost Man Utd against Bournemouth - Van Gaal

    louisvangaal-cropped_j3lps73d5uwr1cbv2mtin7j1o.jpg

Louis van Gaal was left to rue Manchester United's failure to deal with set-pieces as they fell to a shock 2-1 Premier League loss at AFC Bournemouth.

The pressure has been mounting on Van Gaal after a toothless 0-0 draw against West Ham was followed by a 3-2 loss at Wolfsburg that ended their participation in the Champions League.

And the critics will be sharpening their knives again following Saturday's reverse at the Vitality Stadium – United's first league defeat since October.

The visitors fell behind when David de Gea failed to collect Junior Stanislas' corner that sailed straight in and, although Marouane Felliaini levelled before the break, former United forward Josh King completed a well-worked corner routine to settle the contest in the 54th minute.

"Two set-plays cost us like against Wolfsburg," Van Gaal told Sky Sports. "That is not normal for us because we give a lot of attention to organisation. They had a few variations and did it very well, but still it cannot be.

"We played rather well in the first half and I had the feeling we could win in the second half, but then a set-play and you are behind in the score and it is very difficult to have a revival.

"The players had done everything, but Bournemouth pressed on the ball in a fantastic way which made it difficult to get the equaliser or create chances."

Van Gaal refused to lay any blame on goalkeeper De Gea for his rare misjudgement, however, and insisted that his focus instead turned to how United could come back into the game.

"At half-time I spoke about how we have to do it in the second half and I don't talk about the past," he added. "I don't think that's any benefit for me or the players [dwelling] on something like that, we have to go on and I think that's more important.

"It's a rare error, but I think David knows it better than me."

The Dutchman accepts that criticism is sure to follow, but has called on United's fanbase to show faith.

"It [criticism] is always like that. It is not new it is a matter of belief. Believe in the manager or not. That is the most important thing," he said.

"Last year the fans all showed their belief and that is the most important thing. For me the most important thing is the commitment of my players to perform as we have agreed and I can only tell they want to do that."

United are now winless in five in all competitions, leaving them three points off the summit, though Leicester City can move six points clear when they host champions Chelsea on Monday.

Van Gaal's BIGGEST mistake? How Hernandez is making a mockery of misfiring Man Utd

    2392762_heroa.jpg

Javier Hernandez is at it again! As Manchester United were toiling away to Bournemouth in the Premier League, the Mexican striker, who Louis van Gaal allowed to leave in the summer, was banging in a hat-trick for Bayer Leverkusen.

The former forward striker now has 10 goals in Germany's top flight and having struck 15 in his last 12 games in all competitions, he's making Van Gaal's decision to let him go look all the more baffling...

:(Man Utd are in crisis & Van Gaal has only himself to blame

    2392682_heroa.jpg

A week which started with a show of support for Louis van Gaal and optimism of a long Champions League run to come has ended with Manchester United embarrassed by little Bournemouth and staring down the barrel of a full-blown injury crisis.

In football parlance it is crisis time at Old Trafford, and the manager needs to accept that his approach is not working.

Compared to some of their performances of late, United actually looked far more impressive as they went down to a 2-1 defeat at the Vitality Stadium. They looked to have more vibrancy in attack and showed greater energy on the ball.
Perhaps that was a lesson learned from their narrow defeat to Wolfsburg on Tuesday, but it may also have been a direct consequence of Junior Stanislas’ freak second-minute goal which forced the visitors to take the game to Eddie Howe’s side.

In truth though, they always looked likely to be caught out at the back as their understrength defensive line was exposed by a pacy Bournemouth counter-attack. Watching centre-back Simon Francis steam through United’s left-side seconds before Joshua King’s winner said it all about the current state of this Manchester United team.

As if Van Gaal hadn’t done enough to leave United fans scratching their heads in recent weeks, his substitution of goalscorer Marouane Fellaini with 16 minutes to go - the Belgian was replaced by Nick Powell - left them as speechless as ever.

And if anyone gives you the line about the club being luckless with injuries, remind them why they are in this state.
Jesse Lingard’s first-half injury took the tally of United absentees to 10, while Paddy McNair’s injury-time exit made it 11. To an extent that shows that Van Gaal has been dealt a bum hand, but the decision by the Dutchman to trim back his squad in the summer has never looked more ill-judged.

On a day when Javier Hernandez netted a hat-trick for Bayer Leverkusen and James Wilson found the net for Brighton, United finished with Powell – just returning from a year out with knee trouble – as a striker. At the back his insistence on not needing anything more than a left-sided centre-back while sending away the likes Rafael and Jonny Evans also deserves further scrutiny.

The Red Devils’ fixture list in the run-up to Christmas could hardly have been more forgiving. Leicester City, West Ham United, Bournemouth and Norwich City are teams United should be taking at least 10 of 12 points out from. With the Canaries to come next week, their current haul stands at two. Their Champions League exit in Germany, it turns out, was only the beginning of their troubles.

Perhaps the current malaise was summed up in the 90th minute. When McNair had to leave the field with only five minutes left to rescue a point, it was Phil Jones to whom Van Gaal turned in a like-for-like replacement.

Bournemouth have beaten Chelsea and Manchester United in the space of a week. They have never known days like these. But this is as bad as it has been at United since the days of David Moyes.

Udinese 0-4 Inter: Icardi nets double as Mancini's men cruise to comfortable win

    2393242_heroa.jpg

Mauro Icardi scored twice on his return to the Inter team as Roberto Mancini's side thrashed Udinese 4-0 to cement top spot in Serie A.

Inter captain Icardi was left out of last weekend's 1-0 victory against Genoa but was recalled by Mancini at the Friuli and repaid that faith by firing in from 10 yards midway through the first half after Bruno Fernandes gave away possession in a dangerous area.

Stevan Jovetic doubled the lead just eight minutes later to put Inter firmly in control, lobbing Udinese goalkeeper Orestis Karnezis after robbing defender Maurizio Domizzi.

Having conceded only two goals in their last eight games, Inter were never likely to let their lead slip although Antonio Di Natale, on a rare start for Udinese, tested Samir Handanovic regularly.

Udinese have now only beaten Inter twice in their last 13 attempts at home after Icardi added a third with a powerful finish and Marcelo Brozovic bent in a superb strike late on.

Inter's nearest challengers at the top of Serie A are all in action on Sunday, with Napoli hosting Roma and Fiorentina travelling to Juventus.

Defensive solidity rather than prolific attacking has guided Inter to the top of Serie A but they looked at it from the off, and Jovetic threatened in the opening stages, but his low shot was straight at Karnezis, who saved with his legs.

Cyril Thereau tested Handanovic on 14 minutes, before Di Natale thumped a free-kick just wide from 20 yards.

But the Serie A leaders took the lead against the run of play on 22 minutes. Icardi skipped away after a loose pass from Fernandes and the skipper shot across Karnezis into the bottom corner for his fifth goal of the season.

Veteran Di Natale was at the heart of his team's best play and he forced another good save from Handanovic as Udinese responded well to falling behind, but lax play was to cost them again on the half-hour.

Domizzi dallied on the ball and Jovetic picked the defender's pocket, before racing clear and lifting a delightful chip over the onrushing Karnezis.

Handanovic was beaten four minutes after the break when Francesco Lodi's 25-yard shot deflected in off Thereau, but the striker was offside.

Domizzi was having a nightmare and he nearly scored an own goal after Icardi caused havoc in the box, the defender's needless intervention sending the ball dribbling just wide before Adem Ljajic prodded wide.

Icardi was on target again with just seven minutes to go, beating Karnezis with a smashing finish to seal a triumphant return to the Inter team.

And Brozovic added gloss to the scoreline with a brilliant curling strike from 20 yards late on to wrap up a complete performance for Mancini's side.

Klopp annoyed by Liverpool transfer talk

    2392962_heroa.jpg

Jurgen Klopp is unimpressed by the constant questions on Liverpool's transfer ambitions despite his continued insistence that he is happy with the squad.

The 48-year-old has been asked about potential spending since his first day on Merseyside, and has always maintained he does not view recruitment as the solution to every problem.

Klopp prefers to enhance the players he currently manages as well as look to the academy, instead of gambling in the market.

At Melwood on Saturday afternoon, the former Borussia Dortmund boss was twice quick to quash transfer talk.

On the first occasion, he was asked whether he’d look to bring in a replacement for Daniel Sturridge.

He responded: “I think it’s pretty cool to sit on that side of the table and only think of ‘bring new players.’ I hope your company is not always thinking of bringing two or three new guys for your job"

The German was later asked if he was completely content with the personnel at his disposal.“Maybe all of you should read the newspaper of your colleagues because I answer this question all the time!" Klopp said.

"I said it before that I am not one per cent in doubt about the quality of this squad."That's what I thought in the summer when I was not here, that's what I thought in October when I came here, now we have December - my mind didn't change every two days."

Klopp reiterated his belief that a new player doesn’t automatically guarantee better results that optimising what you can get from a footballer already at the club.“You always ask for new players because you think they are players that can come in and help us at this moment,” he said.

“But I think football should be a very good example for life that working together with the right people should always be better than trying always to find new, better ones.”

Klopp: We must conquer challenges, not fear them

    2393572_heroa.jpg

Jurgen Klopp has dared his Liverpool players and the club’s supporters to welcome and conquer challenges instead of worrying about them and turn Anfield into a fortress.

The German boss wants everyone connected with the Reds to ignore negative thinking and work together to ensure the side meets and exceeds expectations this season.

Klopp hopes the change in mentality will start on Sunday afternoon, when Liverpool welcome West Brom to Merseyside - a team he believes there is a fear they will struggle to break down.

"You see, you feel it, you hear it, that everybody thinks, 'West Brom now, it's really difficult, this team, deep defending, we play better against other teams', and all this stuff," Klopp told reporters at Melwood.

"But for us it's important that we're looking forward to this game and that we want to play this game, we want to have the problems in this game, we want to find solutions for the problems in this game.

"You have, always, other problems and you have always to think of solutions and after the first whistle you have to play football."Of course against teams like West Brom they want to be successful, that's absolutely okay, but we are playing at Anfield and we have to show this.

"When you think about games at Anfield maybe you think, 'okay, but maybe it's easier for them to play away' and things like this.

"We have to ignore all this thinking, we have to enjoy this big, big challenge and if we are able to do this then we can play good football."The 48-year-old asked the club's supporters to turn the stadium into a cauldron of enthusiasm and encouragement.

"When we come together all of us tomorrow, we should be prepared for a very special moment,” Klopp said."Maybe we can have the best atmosphere in the last 10 years tomorrow. There’s always a question of who will start, and I try everything to prepare the team but if we have to play against the doubts or things like this, then it’s difficult.

"So maybe we can make a really special atmosphere that will of course help. It’s like always in life; maybe we can wait for the moment, or maybe we create the moment. Hopefully we can do it tomorrow.

"I’m always, not the most talented, but I’m always close to a very good atmosphere in myself so if somebody wants to join this, that would be cool."
