Hannover 0-1 Bayern Munich: Muller penalty extends Bundesliga advantage

    2426152_heroa.jpg

Bayern Munich brushed aside mounting speculation over the future of coach Pep Guardiola to chalk up a 15th win of the Bundesliga season, 1-0 at Hannover.
Reports in Germany are increasingly leaning towards the likelihood that Guardiola will end a three-year spell in Bavaria when his current deal expires at the end of this season.

If so, he will leave behind an incredibly well-oiled machine – his Bayern side going through the majority of the match at the HDI Arena virtually untroubled after Manuel Neuer tipped Leon Andreasen's early header onto his crossbar.

That Bayern only had Thomas Muller's 40th-minute penalty to show for their efforts owed much to the heroics of Hannover goalkeeper Ron-Robert Zieler and a second-half performance that settled for control rather than penetration.

Victory saw Bayern move eight points ahead of Borussia Dortmund - who lost 2-1 at Cologne - at the summit heading into the Bundesliga's mid-season break, having dropped only five points all season.

Two enforced changes as Holger Badstuber and Arturo Vidal limped out of the action took some of the shine off the result for the champions, who only named four substitutes due to existing injury concerns.

Hannover made a confident start to the match and, after Zieler sprung from his line to thwart Thiago Alcantara on the end of Vidal's lofted pass, the hosts were almost in front after eight minutes.

Andreasen glanced Miiko Albornoz's cross goalwards and, on his 300th Bundesliga appearance, Bayern goalkeeper Neuer was at full stretch to touch the ball against the bar

Perhaps inevitably, Zieler would have considerably more work to get through than his opposite number thereafter and he impressed with an acrobatic save at his near post from Kingsley Coman.

Robert Lewandowski took down Thiago's diagonal pass but fired too close to Zieler, who produced a more unconventional stop to catch the eye with half an hour played.Lewandowski's curling shot beat the Germany international's despairing dive and cannoned back off the post to Muller.

The Bayern man prodded a side-footed effort towards the gaping goal but Zieler lunged back towards his line to save with his boot.Coman then failed to connect with what appeared to be a simple finish at the back post before Hannover's resistance was broken five minutes from half-time.

Captain Christian Schulz carelessly blocked Coman's right-wing cross with a flailing arm and Muller outsmarted Zieler on this occasion, sending him the wrong way.

Lewandowski saw Zieler claw a a 20-yard effort to safety in the 56th minute and the Poland star then knocked down a set piece for Javi Martinez to skew wastefully wide.Hannover winger Edgar Prib sent a dipping long-range effort over on an increasingly rare sighting of the Bayern goal, the visitors having long established their customary dominance of possession amid persistent cajoling from Guardiola.

Bayern could find themselves planning for life beyond their current coach when they return to domestic action on January 22, while Hannover will have the more immediate concern of a relegation scrap – Michael Frontzeck's team sitting precariously in 16th place with 14 points to their name.

Koln 2-1 Borussia Dortmund: Zoller and Modeste complete stunning comeback

    anthony-modeste-1-fc-koln-bundesliga-25092015_cqj650tgfzv811bdlsy842syh.jpg

Simon Zoller and Anthony Modeste both struck late on as FC Koln produced a stunning comeback to defeat Borussia Dortmund 2-1.

Sokratis Papastathopoulosscored the first goal of the game, netting a powerful header from close-range to give Thomas Tuchel's side the lead.

But the hosts responded brilliantly and Frederik Sorensen saw a header well saved by Roman Burki, while Yannick Gerhardt struck the post.It appeared as though Dortmund would see out the pressure until Zoller capitalised on Burki's poor clearance to lash home the equaliser in the 83rd minute.

And there was time for more drama as Modeste came off the bench to score his first goal since October 4 and complete an incredible comeback. The late collapse means Tuchel's Dortmund now trail leaders Bayern Munich by eight points heading into the mid-season break.

There was no sign that BVBwould struggle in the early stages and they broke the deadlock in the 18th minute. Koln switched off at a corner and Sokratis met Henrikh Mkhitaryan's delivery with a thumping header into the bottom right-hand corner. The goal seemed to spark the hosts into life and two dangerous Marcel Risse deliveries from the right failed to pick out a team-mate.

And Dortmund were thankful to Burki when Jonas Hector's dangerous free-kick was met by Sorensen's downward header, but the goalkeeper flung himself low to make a brilliant save.

Referee Knut Kircher then waved away Koln protests for a penalty when Pawel Olkowski went to ground under Park Joo-ho's challenge.

Dortmund made two changes at the break with Park and Mats Hummels replaced by Marcel Schmelzer and Sven Bender. But it was Koln that continued to impress and Dusan Svento dragged a half-volley wide when the ball fell kindly in the area from a corner.

At the other end, Shinji Kagawa wasted a great chance to extend Dortmund's lead. Bender's clipped cross picked out the Japanese, who headed tamely wide from eight yards when unmarked.

The end-to-end nature of the match continued as first Zoller saw a goal-bound effort deflected over the crossbar for Koln, before Sorensen made a fine block after Jonas Hofmann had danced his way past a couple of challenges.

With the clock winding down, Burki again came to the rescue for Dortmund. The space opened for Gerhardt and his shot was tipped onto the post by the goalkeeper. But Koln did get their deserved equaliser seven minutes from time. Burki and Bender made a mess of things at the back and Zoller stole in ahead of the defender to emphatically hammer home to the delight of the home supporters.

It was not yet over, though.Sorensen's header sailed over Dortmund's defence and Modeste struck a brilliant first time drive past Burki into the bottom left-hand corner to give Koln a dramatic late win.

Chelsea fans taunt their OWN players: Where were you when we were s**t?

    2426112_heroa.jpg

As life without Jose Mourinho began with a quick 2-0 lead over Sunderland, Chelsea fans taunted their players for their misfiring form this season, asking "where were you when we were s**t".

After booing Diego Costa and Cesc Fabregas as their names were announced on the team sheet, the Blues faithful continued their ire, mocking the players rise in performance after the sacking of the Portuguese boss.

Things might already be going better on the Stamford Bridge pitch, but in the stands discord continues, with the fans clearly unhappy with the players' sudden return to form.

Roma make Mourinho their No.1 managerial target

    2425162_heroa.jpg

Roma have made Jose Mourinho their No.1 managerial target as speculation grows over Rudi Garcia's future, Goal understands.

The Portuguese manager was dismissed by Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich on Thursday, with the Blues suffering a dismal defence of their title that sees them languishing in 16th place in the Premier League table.

And Goal understands that Mourinho is at the top of the list of potential replacements for Garcia at Roma, who could lose his job if the Giallorossi fail to beat Genoa in Sunday's Serie A clash.

Mourinho spent two years in Italy managing Inter, where he won two league titles and the Champions League during a hugely successful spell with the Nerazzurri.

In a statement released earlier on Saturday, the 52-year-oldrevealed that he would not be taking a sabbatical, seemingly with the aim of making an immediate return to management after his sacking on Thursday.

Roma, meanwhile, are currently fifth in the Serie A table although Garcia's position worsened after Wednesday's humiliating Coppa Italia exit at the hands of Serie B side Spezia.

The Frenchman has successfully steered Roma to the last 16 of the Champions League but is still in a precarious situation having failed to register a single victory since November 8.

The capital club do, however, appreciate that luring Mourinho to Stadio Olimpico will be difficult, with the Portuguese having previously suggested that he would only return to Italy to take the Inter job.

Former Roma boss Fabio Capello, meanwhile, has dismissed the chance of returning to the club with whom he lifted the 2000-01 Scudetto.

:growl::(Manchester United 1-2 Norwich City: Jerome piles more misery on Van Gaal

    2426922_heroa.jpg

Cameron Jerome scored one goal and created another to inspire Norwich City to a 2-1 win over Manchester United and pile more pressure on Louis van Gaal.

Wayne Rooney, making his 500th appearance for the club, returned from injury and helped United make a promising start at Old Trafford, but they were stunned by Jerome's goal shortly before the break as Norwich capitalised on their first chance of the half.

Alex Neil's side shocked the hosts again soon after the break when Alex Tettey prodded in a second, with United failing to make their control of possession count against a disciplined visiting defence.

Anthony Martial, fresh from claiming the Golden Boy prize for 2015, gave United a lifeline with a calm finish from close range in the 67th minute as United poured forward in the torrential Manchester rain.

Juan Mata then went close with a free-kick but Norwich held on for only their second win in 20 away games in the top flight, adding to the scrutiny on Van Gaal as talk of a move for Jose Mourinho intensifies.

United – beaten by another promoted side last time out in the shape of Bournemouth – started on the front foot and looked to inject the attacking verve the Old Trafford crowd has been calling for this season, with Memphis Depay curling one effort narrowly over before Rooney dragged a shot wide after a good Mata run.

Depay just failed to connect properly with a Rooney cross as the home side continued to dominate, but Norwich kept them largely at arm's length and began to grow into the game as the half wore on.

The visitors snatched the lead just seven minutes before the interval. After Tettey's good break, Nathan Redmond turned inside Ashley Young before teeing up Jerome, who side-footed past David de Gea from close range.

The Stretford End gave a rousing cheer in an effort to encourage United, but Norwich sent the away fans into raptures after another clinical counter-attack 10 minutes into the second half.

Jerome burst clear of Phil Jones after Rooney and Michael Carrick had lost possession near the halfway line and Tettey latched onto his pass before toe-poking the ball past De Gea and into the bottom corner.

United had peppered the Norwich penalty area with unsuccessful crosses but finally made their mark when Martial pounced on Rooney's flicked header from a Mata delivery before firing high past Declan Rudd from 12 yards out.

Mata's free-kick brought a good save out of Rudd, while Chris Smalling – playing as a makeshift striker in injury time – headed the ball wide after running clear through on goal, but Norwich held on for a vital three points in their bid for survival and extended United's winless run in all competitions to six matches.

Southampton 0-2 Tottenham: Kane & Alli fire Pochettino's men to victory

    2426602_heroa.jpg

Tottenham climbed to fourth in the Premier League on Saturday as first-half goals from Harry Kane and Dele Alli helped them down Southampton 2-0 at St Mary's Stadium.

The visitors saw their 14-game unbeaten league run ended by Newcastle United last weekend, but after enduring a nervy opening 20 minutes, they proved too strong for a Southampton side that has now gone six games without a win in all competitions.

The victory, Tottenham's third on the road in the top flight this season, proved enough to lift them into the final Champions League qualification spot as Manchester United fell to a shock home loss against Norwich City.

Just two minutes and 50 seconds separated their two goals at St Mary's, with Kane making it nine from his last 11 Premier League appearances and Alli claiming an assist before finding the net for the fourth time this season.

Ronald Koeman's side lost their way after falling behind just before the break and rarely looked likely to halt their alarming slide down the table.

It was Southampton who made the brighter start, with Sadio Mane twice going close to giving them the lead in the opening seven minutes. The Senegalese striker's first effort was blocked by a timely challenge from Toby Alderweireld and his second forced a smart stop from Hugo Lloris.

Tottenham's first meaningful effort came after 15 minutes when Christian Eriksen, looking for his fourth goal in as many appearances against Southampton, dragged a shot wide from just inside the box.

Eric Dier did then loop a header narrowly over the crossbar and Kane was denied by Paulo Gazzaniga, but by and large it was the hosts who continued to look the more likely.

With Dusan Tadic and Cedric Soares causing plenty of problems out wide, Tottenham's defence never looked especially secure and they also struggled to contain the lively Mane.So it came as a surprise when it was the London club who broke the deadlock five minutes before the break.

Having won the ball just inside the Southampton half, Kane headed for goal, shrugged off a weak challenge from Virgil van Dijk and calmly beat Gazzaniga.
And fewer than three minutes later, the home defence crumbled again.

Kyle Walker was allowed to make inroads down the right and his cross found its way to the back post where Alli popped up completely unmarked to apply the close-range finish.

With the rain sweeping in off the Solent at the start of the second half, Southampton again started brightly, but after top scorer Graziano Pelle missed two decent chances in as many minutes, they rarely threatened a Tottenham side more than happy to sit on their two-goal lead.

Neither Shane Long nor Junami made much of an impact for the home side after being introduced from the bench.

Kane could have made the victory even more emphatic had he managed to get a meaningful touch on Eriksen's teasing free-kick 10 minutes from time.

That would have been harsh on a Southampton side who battled manfully to the end and came close to grabbing a late consolation when substitute James Ward-Prowse was denied by a superb save from Lloris in stoppage time.Ultimately, however, it was Tottenham's day and a sweet return to his former club for boss Mauricio Pochettino.

Stoke City 1-2 Crystal Palace: Lee wins it late for visitors

    2427092_heroa.jpg

Lee Chung-yong came off the bench to earn Crystal Palace a 2-1 Premier League win with a superb strike at Stoke City.

The teams had scored a penalty apiece prior to Lee's 88th-minute scorcher, which he buried from just outside the penalty area after Stoke failed to clear their lines from a corner.Stoke edged the first half in terms of possession and chances, with Marco van Ginkel hitting the post from an Erik Pieters cross.

However, Glenn Whelan clumsily brought down Wilfried Zaha with half-time approaching and Connor Wickham blasted home from 12 yards to send the visitors in front with his first goal for the club.

Stoke applied the pressure after the interval as they went in desperate search of an equaliser and were eventually rewarded 14 minutes from time after Damien Delaney was penalised for handball, allowing Bojan Krkic to level.Lee, though, had the final say, sending Palace level on 29 points with Tottenham and Manchester United, while Stoke remain 11th.

Xherdan Shaqiri returned to the Stoke starting XI after missing last weekend's goalless draw with West Ham through illness, while Yohan Cabaye failed a late fitness test and was replaced by Joe Ledley in the Palace midfield.

An open first 20 minutes were tempered by both teams' initial struggles to carve out any clear-cut goalscoring opportunities and it was not until the 25th minute that either goalkeeper was called into action.Marko Arnautovic teed up Bojan 20 yards out, but the Spaniard's strike with the outside of the boot was kept out by a diving Wayne Hennessey save.

Ibrahim Afellay could not keep his shot down as Stoke began to enjoy the better of the chances, while Pieters' cross from the left was diverted onto the post by Van Ginkel.

Palace's first-half opportunities had been limited to a Yannick Bolasie run into the box that culminated in the attacker failing to beat the first man with his attempt to find a team-mate, but a penalty gave the visitors a chance to break the deadlock.
Whelan's challenge on Zaha gifted Wickham the opportunity to put Palace in front, the striker firing straight down the middle with Jack Butland already committed to a dive to his right.

Stoke pressed for an equaliser from the first whistle in the second half, with Glen Johnson's low drive forcing Hennessey into a diving save. The hosts' attacking approach left them vulnerable at the back on occasion and James McArthur came agonisingly close to getting on the end of a Bolasie cross from the left.

Bolasie then cleared the danger following a frantic goalmouth scramble, before Palace had half-hearted appeals for another penalty for a Johnson handball turned down by referee Robert Madley.

Stoke continued to play a high-pressing game and Arnautovic saw an effort deflect inches wide with a wrong-footed Hennessey beaten, while Bojan should have done better when he failed to beat the Palace goalkeeper with a tame shot from an unmarked position.

But Stoke's persistence paid off when Palace skipper Delaney was penalised for handball, with Madley awarding Mark Hughes' men a penalty for the third time this season.

Bojan buried his strike to seemingly earn Stoke a point from a match they will feel they had enough opportunities to win, but Lee's flash of brilliance sealed victory for Alan Pardew's side.

Everton 2-3 Leicester City: Foxes top at Christmas thanks to Mahrez double

    2426732_heroa.jpg

Riyad Mahrez scored two penalties as Leicester City won 3-2 at Everton on Saturday to ensure they will be top of the Premier League at Christmas.

The in-form winger scored a spot-kick in each half, either side of Romelu Lukaku netting in his seventh consecutive league game for the hosts.Shinji Okazaki appeared to have wrapped up the points, before a late strike from substitute Kevin Mirallas set up a dramatic finish as Claudio Ranieri's men held on.

Leicester's eighth victory from 10 games means they are guaranteed to be top of the league at Christmas and the omens look good for a shock title bid as five of the last six teams to have held that status went on to be crowned champions.

The visitors now sit five points clear of Arsenal - who face Manchester City on Monday - at the top of the table, although they will hope Jamie Vardy has not suffered a serious injury after he came off holding his hamstring in the closing stages.

Everton, meanwhile, lost for the first time in seven league games.Ranieri made three changes to his team, with Andy King, Okazaki and Marcin Wasilewski coming in, while Everton were unchanged.

It was Okazaki who had the only attempt of the early stages when he prodded Marc Albrighton's cross narrowly wide.

For the hosts, Ross Barkley sliced a volley badly off target after Lukaku had created a decent opening before Leicester took the lead from the spot on 27 minutes.Okazaki was bundled over by Ramiro Funes Mori after driving into the box and Mahrez took the penalty, converting with a calm low effort to beat Tim Howard's dive.

But Everton levelled five minutes later. Tom Cleverley slipped a pass through to Barkley and the England midfielder had an attempt saved by the legs of Kasper Schmeichel.

Barkley shot again from the rebound and was denied by King's headed clearance on the goal-line, but the ball then broke to Lukaku, who made no mistake with a powerful finish to end a dramatic scramble.

Early in the second half, John Stones had a half-hearted penalty claim turned down after heading onto the arm of Christian Fuchs from close-range, while Vardy curled a shot just past the post at the other end.

Leicester got back in front with 25 minutes remaining and did not look back.Mahrez found Vardy with an impressive through-ball and the England striker was taken out by Tim Howard as he attempted to round the keeper.Mahrez stepped up to take his second penalty of the match and sent Howard the wrong way for his 13th Premier League goal of the season.

The victory was sealed four minutes later when Seamus Coleman's clearance was blocked by Albrighton – with Everton claiming the winger had used an arm – and Vardy seized possession to slip a square pass to Okazaki, who finished impressively with his left foot.

Hopes of a comeback were raised when an excellent flick from Barkley set up substitute Mirallas and the Belgium international smashed a shot home at the near post with one minute remaining.

In an end-to-end finish, Barkley had an effort saved by Schmeichel and Leonardo Ulloa almost scored a fourth on the counter as Leicester held on to continue their dream season.

Caen 0-3 Paris Saint-Germain: Di Maria & Zlatan on target for unstoppable Ligue 1 leaders

    2426802_heroa.jpg

Angel Di Maria scored a double to help Paris Saint-Germain to a 3-0 win over Caen at the Stade Michel d'Ornano in Ligue 1 on Saturday, with Zlatan Ibrahimovic also on target.

The Parisian outfit were all over their opponents right from the start and Di Maria opened the scoring after just 16 minutes of play. Ibrahimovic made it two nine minutes before the break with a stylish volley, before Argentina international Di Maria scored his second and the visitors' third five minutes into the second half.

Caen occasionally looked to threaten on the counterattack and even earned an opportunity to pull one back with a late spot-kick, but Andy Delort failed to find the net from 12 yards as PSG held on to their three-goal lead.

The titleholders sit top of Ligue 1 with 51 points from 19 games heading into the winter break following the victory on Saturday and are on a 28-game unbeaten run in the French top flight.Caen, meanwhile, remain fourth with 30 points.

Lucas threatened early on for PSG when he beat the offside trap after a good long ball from Thiago Motta, but the Brazil international hesitated, allowing Syam Ben Youssef to rush back and make a last-ditch tackle.

The reigning champions went a goal up after 16 minutes of play. Ben Youssef failed to properly clear Serge Aurier's cross from the right, deflecting the ball into the feet of Di Maria, who had no trouble finding the net from inside the area.

Laurent Blanc's men came close to doubling their lead mid-way through the first half via Ibrahimovic, but the Swede hit the crossbar with his first attempt, before testing Remy Vercoutre with a spectacular bicycle kick from the rebound that the Caen goalkeeper kept out with a fine reflex stop.

The visitors continued to dominate proceedings in the remainder of the first half and there were chances for Motta, Thiago Silva and Lucas Moura, but Vercoutre initially proved to be too much of an obstacle for a second goal before the break.

There was nothing Vercoutre could do to deny Ibrahimovic in the 36th minute, though. Lucas laid the ball off for Ibrahimovic on the edge of the area and the 34-year-old blasted a stunning volley into the top corner to make it 2-0 with his 15th league goal of the season.

Di Maria effectively ended the match as a contest early in the second half with his second goal of the afternoon. Lucas headed a cross from the left back across the goal and Di Maria lifted the ball over Vercoutre - and into the net - with a subtle movement of his left foot.Ibrahimovic got a chance to double his personal tally when the referee awarded PSG a free-kick on the edge of the box, but the Sweden star aimed too high.

Di Maria set up Lavezzi one-on-one with Vercoutre thanks to a dangerous throughball on 75 minutes, but the former Napoli man failed to guide the ball past the Caen shot stopper.Lavezzi tested Vercoutre again in the 80th minute with a powerful shot toward the top corner, the Caen man once more proving equal to the task.

Delort should have pulled one back in the closing stages of the game after the referee awarded Caen a penalty, but Kevin Trapp did well to keep out the spot-kick.

Van Gaal is ruining Man Utd & it's time for him to leave

Having gone five games without a win, exited the Champions League, and seen Jose Mourinho and Pep Guardiola both emerge on the job market this week, the last thing Louis van Gaal needed on Saturday was another defeat.

Yet Manchester United have slumped to fifth in the Premier League table after their 2-1 defeat to Norwich City at Old Trafford and the Dutchman might well find himself having to answer for United's abysmal form before Christmas Day rolls around. His three-year contract might not live to see its halfway point.

As if defeats at Wolfsburg and Bournemouth were not enough, a first home reverse of the season to a Norwich side who started the day in the bottom three can only intensify the calls within increasing pockets of the fan base for Van Gaal to be removed from the hot seat. At Manchester United you are expected to get results or entertain, if not both. Right now they are doing neither.

It was notable that Ryan Giggs was seen patrolling the technical area for much of the dying stages as United struggled to find holes in Norwich's back line. Van Gaal has been steadfast in his refusal to be a shouter or cajoler. He always remains sat in his seat throughout wins, draws and losses alike.

But the Welsh number two took it upon himself to provide a presence on the touchline as his side looked for inspiration. And in doing so he was not just getting closer to the players, he was also putting distance between himself and Van Gaal. However deliberate it was, it was also telling.

A United side looking for energy from somewhere have had little from anywhere in recent times. When Ashley Young swung in a low cross which escaped the Norwich back line, Wayne Rooney was caught on the back foot and the chance went begging. It said much about both Rooney's and United's fortunes this season. Too often the captain has been a yard off the pace, and far too familiar is the sight of a United attack falling down at the final hurdle.

As the rain poured down late on, United fans began to up and leave. They had seen enough for one day, and they have seen more than enough of their side's failures this season full stop.

Before then they had been noticeably vocal during the second half as they looked to cheer their side on to a crucial comeback but the players just could not respond, and by the end they had given up the ghost. Those that stayed until full-time left nobody in any doubt as to their frustrations, with boos reverberating around the one-time Theatre of Dreams.

The question now is how deep those frustrations run in the boardroom. So far the club have backed Van Gaal to the hilt, but surely this has gone on for far too long. As United's form goes from bad to increasingly desperate, isn’t it about time Van Gaal was shown the door?

Van Gaal fears Man Utd sack as Mourinho looms large

    2427182_heroa.jpg

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has admitted he fears for his job following the sacking of Jose Mourinho by Chelsea and the Red Devils' six-match winless run.

Reports on Friday claimed Mourinho had set his sights on taking over at Old Trafford as Van Gaal comes under increasing pressure on the back of a poor run of form.

Speaking after the Red Devils's latest defeat at home to Norwich City, the Dutchman conceded that he had work to do to win back the United supporters and hierarchy.

"Of course I am worried about [Mourinho's sacking] because belief in a manager is very important," Van Gaal told reporters. "And when you lose as a manager that confidence decreases.

"That is happening now, and I cannot close my eyes to that."

Van Gaal said he had spoken to his players as normal after the 2-1 loss and reiterated his position that a change of manager is not the solution to United's problems.

"I always say something [to the players]," he said. "Today it was very hard to say something, but I said something that will stay with the players.

"I don't think a change of management shall bring direct success."

Wayne Rooney made his 500th appearance for United, but failed to make an impact, and Van Gaal declined the opportunity to praise his captain for reaching that milestone.

"I cannot say that after this match now, because we have to evaluate [the performance]."

Benitez not feeling the pressure at Real Madrid

    rafaelbenitez-cropped_1dx6nt6b54vjizxck4dnyuco5.jpg

Real Madrid coach Rafael Benitez insists he does not feel under excessive pressure ahead of the Liga match against Rayo Vallecano.

Last weekend's 1-0 loss at Villarreal left Benitez's men five points behind leaders Barcelona and Atletico Madrid in the Spanish top flight.

Madrid president Florentino Perez has called for the team to play with greater intensity and identified club icon Zinedine Zidane as a future head coach, while Jose Mourinho's departure from Chelsea has prompted speculation that Benitez's great rival could make a return to the Santiago Bernabeu.

Nevertheless, the former Liverpool and Napoli boss remains focused on the task at hand and reducing the gap behind Barcelona as the Spanish and European champions take part in the Club World Cup final against River Plate."Fortunately, for many years, working in three major leagues and winning titles has given me enough experience," Benitez told a pre-match media conference.

"I try to do my job and I will continue to work for Madrid with respect, effort and education."Historically, we always want to win, When something goes wrong, we change. That is our idea and we always try to win every game."

Asked whether he felt more pressure than usual, Benitez simply replied, "No", while he also declined to comment on Mourinho leaving Chelsea."I have no opinion on that subject, I'm focused on my team," he said.

Benitez is still confident Madrid can challenge for La Liga and the Champions League, although he expects a thorough examination when near neighbours Rayo visit the Bernabeu."I am confident," he said. "Last year Real Madrid had a four-point lead and ended up losing the league. Each season is different because the circumstances are different.

"We are better than what is discussed in the media. We will fight to the end and I am sure we can win La Liga and the Champions League."For us, the key is to play your best, take advantage of our qualities. If we are successful we can beat anyone.

"Rayo plays well and we must be vigilant and successful from the defensive phase to attack."

'We don't care' - Muller unperturbed by Guardiola uncertainty

    champions-league-totw-thomas-muller-bayern-munich_1j52r9y7f8f9612wiqjrk6sjyf.jpg

Thomas Muller says the Bayern Munich players are not worried about the uncertainty surrounding Pep Guardiola's future.

The Spanish coach's contract at the Allianz Arena expires at the end of the season and he says an announcement over his future will be announced in the near future, though Goal understands he will depart the German side in the summer and be replaced by Carlo Ancelotti. And Muller says the lack of clarity on how long the two-time Bundesliga winning manager remains has had no effect on the team so far.

"We don't care about that," he told Sky. "We want to win everything this season, no matter how long it takes with the coach's contract.

"I do not know whether he will renew in the end, but if he doesn't then it does not matter. Jupp Heynckes also did this in 2012-13 and we won the treble that year."
Borussia Dortmund's 2-1 defeat to Koln on Saturday allowed Bayern to move eight points clear at the top of the Bundesliga with a 1-0 victory over Hannover, though Muller insists it was not an easy win.

"It was clear that we would not receive gifts here," he said. "It was a fight until the end and we did not have many players.

"It wasn't a spectacular victory, but it feels great if you give all and get rewarded."
Goalkeeper Manuel Neuer added: "We could have had it much easier, if we had taken our chances in the first half."

PSG not in talks to sign Ronaldo - Al-Khelaifi

    cristiano-ronaldo-cropped_wgk659qu8brd15rayg0qsyvl3.jpg

Paris Saint-Germain president Nasser Al-Khelaifi has dismissed suggestions the Ligue 1 champions are in talks to sign Cristiano Ronaldo from Real Madrid.

The Portugal international's future is the subject of frequent speculation, with both PSG and his former club Manchester United touted as potential destinations should he depart the Santiago Bernabeu.

However, a potential move to the Parc des Princes is apparently still far away at this stage."At the moment, Ronaldo is a Real Madrid player. He still has two-and-a-half years to go on his current contract," El-Khelaifi told Le Figaro.

"I maintain an excellent relationship with Real Madrid president Florentino Perez. We have not held talks over Ronaldo.

"He is obviously a great player, but we already have some great players in our squad. Angel Di Maria is one of them. I am very satisfied with our current squad."

Al-Khelaifi also had his say on the future of Zlatan Ibrahimovic - whose contract with PSG expires at the end of the season - and revealed that they will sit down with the 34-year-old in February to discuss his future."I have a lot of respect for Ibrahimovic as a player, he always behaves professionally," he added.

"We will never forget what he has done for PSG. The fans will always remember him. He loves Paris and PSG. Every match makes him happy like he is still 16. He always wants to keep going and that underlines his motivation. He gives his all for the club.

"We will discuss his future in February, to see what he wants to do. He knows that I will always support him."

The end for Van Gaal? Man Utd's form their worst for 17 YEARS

    2426722_heroa.jpg

Things can only get better for Manchester United after their 2-1 defeat to Norwich at Old Trafford saw Louis van Gaal's men equal their longest run without a win during a single season in 17 years.

Goals from Alex Tettey and Cameron Jerome fired the Canaries to victory and meant Anthony Martial's 66th minute strike was nothing more than a consolation.

The result left many wanting to see the back of Van Gaal, with Jose Mourinho's name sung from the terraces at Old Trafford just days after he was sacked by Chelsea.

United now haven't tasted victory in six games, with their last win coming away at Watford in November, and that run of form has seen them drop to fifth in the Premier League on 29 points.

The last time the Red Devils endured such a lean spell in the same campaign was back in December 1998, but on that occasion they staged a remarkable recovery to go on and win the treble.
However, there is already no chance of Van Gaal's side repeating that feat, after United were knocked out of the Champions League earlier this month and the League Cup in October.

The FA Cup remains their last hope of silverware this term where Sheffield United will provide the opposition in the third round of the competition on January 9.
