Barcelona won't get Denis Suarez in January - Villarreal president

    denissuarez-cropped_hbdd0vwluzcy1jwnu48zh78qw.jpg

Villarreal president Fernando Roig says that the club will not be selling Denis Suarez in the January transfer window.

Suarez moved to Villarreal from Barcelona in the off-season and the Spanish champions have confirmed that there is a possibility that they could re-sign their former player.

The 21-year-old has been a key figure for Villarreal this season, scoring three goals and providing five assists in 13 league appearances, and Roig is adamant that he will remain their player until at least the end of the season.

"There is an option for the summer, at the end of the season, but not until then," he explained to the press.

The president also indicated that his team are looking at the possibility of bringing back Denis Cheryshev. The Russia international, who is under contract at Real Madrid, spent the 2014-15 season on loan at Villarreal. He made 40 appearances for the club in all competitions but has struggled for game time under Rafa Benitez at Madrid this season.

Roig says that a move for the 25-year-old could be in the offing, either in January or at the end of the season.

"[Cheryshev] is also liked by our coach and, if we could get him, he would be a great help," he remarked. "We may try to sign him and we will soon see what happens.

"If there's someone who could help a lot, we will do it, but we think that, in general, we have a great squad."

Real Madrid hope for stability in 2016 - Sergio Ramos

    sergioramosrafaelbenitez-cropped_rc2fvzgsp7eb1slv78fmswyw4.jpg

Real Madrid defender Sergio Ramos hopes for more balance and stability at the club in 2016.

The Spanish giants endured a difficult time in 2015, with Rafa Benitez coming in to replace the sacked Carlo Ancelotti.

Benitez is the eighth Madrid coach in 10 years, while rivals Barcelona have only changed boss five times in the same period.

Ramos, who has struggled with niggling injuries in 2015-16, has his fingers crosssed for a more prosperous year for the club and himself.

"At a personal level, first I hope injuries treat me well and it's a year with a good level of football," he said.

"At a professional level, I hope 2016 is a successful one, that we can finally reach a regularity, a balance and a stability.

"And that we find the best way to play, keep that going and get to the end of the season the strongest possible to win titles and celebrate with our fans."

Madrid are third in La Liga going into the new year and were drawn against Roma in the Champions League round of 16.

Benitez stays defiant in new-year message to Real Madrid fans

    rafaelbenitez-cropped_1d19cy0zu1c0a12etcipbn6f8x.jpg

Under-fire Real Madrid coach Rafael Benitez remained defiant in a new-year message in which he vowed to fight for titles to satisfy the demand of the club's supporters.

Benitez replaced Carlo Ancelotti at the Santiago Bernabeu during the close-season but his tenure has not proved particularly popular.

Fans have become increasingly frustrated with the team's style of play and have regularly whistled them during matches.

The Spaniard faced particularly strong criticism in the wake of a 4-0 Clasico rout at the hands of rivals Barcelona.

Despite the mounting pressure, Madrid start 2016 just two points adrift of Barca - who have a game in hand - and are in the last 16 of the Champions League.

And Benitez promised that the team will stayed united, telling Marca: "All the Real Madrid fans should have the certainty and security that we will work to our maximum to get wins.

"We want to get titles for fans and we will put all our efforts to the end."

:oo::baffled::no:The answer to Van Gaal's problems? Man Utd recall Keane from Preston loan

    willkeane-cropped_1uc6cuqzj2jc8184jixw24yjbp.jpg

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has recalled Will Keane from his loan spell at Preston North End to bolster his shot-shy strikeforce.

Keane joined the Championship side on a season-long loan in July, but scored just one goal in 20 league appearances.

Despite his poor return, Van Gaal has opted to cut short Keane's spell at Deepdale to allow him to fight for a first-team place at Old Trafford.

"[It happened] in the last 24 hours or so. United felt they needed an extra body around them," Preston manager Simon Grayson told Sky Sports.

"Obviously it's disappointing to lose Will. In the last few weeks he's been finding his feet with us. But that is what happens when you get loan players."

Van Gaal has found his position in the United hotseat come under increasing pressure following a seven-match winless run.

United's have particularly struggled in the final third with the club managing just 22 goal in 19 Premier League matches.

Anthony Martial and Juan Mata have scored four goals each in the league, while captain Wayne Rooney has disappointingly contributed just two.

Van Gaal opted to tinker with his forward line during the close-season with Robin van Persie and Javier Hernandez departing for Fenerbahce and Bayer Leverkusen respectively, while James Wilson is currently on loan at Brighton and Hove Albion.

OFFICIAL: Man Utd goalkeeper Johnstone rejoins Preston

    2466912_heroa.jpg

Manchester United goalkeeper Sam Johnstone has rejoined hometown club Preston North End on a one-month loan deal.

The 22-year-old spent the early weeks of the season on the substitutes' bench but, after David de Gea's move to Real Madrid fell through, he dropped down the pecking order.

The former Doncaster Rovers loanee spent the second half of the 2014-15 campaign with Preston as he helped them gain promotion to the Championship via the play-offs.

And Johnstone is keen to earn more first-team experience as he returns to Deepdale following Jordan Pickford's recall from his loan spell with the Lilywhites by Sunderland.

"I'm delighted to be back and hopefully I can start playing some games," he told Preston's official website.

"It's great to be around the team at Manchester United, they are the biggest club in the world but, at the end of the day, I'm 22 years old and I have to think about myself a little bit and I need to be playing first-team football.

"I get to do that now in the Championship, which is a great league to play in."

Johnstone's departure leaves United with three senior goalkeepers, though Victor Valdes remains out of favour, having fallen out with manager Louis van Gaal.

OFFICIAL: Atletico Madrid sign Celta's Fernandez

    augustofernandez-cropped_1iaplmq23zqf81un7dhj3yhyo9.jpg

Atletico Madrid have completed the signing of midfielder Augusto Fernandez from La Liga counterparts Celta Vigo.

The 29-year-old, who has won nine caps for Argentina, joins up with Diego Simeone's squad on a three-and-a-half-year contract.

Fernandez's impressive form for Celta, who he joined in 2012, has helped them rise to fifth in the Liga standings this season and persuaded his former River Plate boss Simeone and Atleti to make their move.

Atletico sporting director Jose Luis Perez Caminero told the club's official website: "He's a player of proven experience in La Liga, who will bring quality and competition to a great midfield such as ours. His signing will help us to face the demands of having to play three competitions.

"At the club we are delighted with his arrival and during his stay in La Liga we have been able to confirm that he has great technical qualities."

Fernandez played 78 minutes of Celta's 1-0 loss at home to Athletic Bilbao on Wednesday, but has not been named in Atletico's squad to face Levante on Saturday.

De Gea: I want to be the world's best goalkeeper

    david-de-gea-cropped_1fob1v8o71qy6171k2smyb6z76.jpg

Manchester United's David De Gea is aiming to become the best goalkeeper in the world.

The Spain international has developed into one of the best goalkeepers around the game in recent years, but he remains ambitious and is determined to keep improving.

"The ultimate aim is to be known as the world's best," he told the official United website.

"I try to train and I try to play in games and to do the best I possibly can in order to attain that level and to be able to make it.

"Of course, getting to be number one keeper in the world is a tough ask because there are loads of goalkeepers out there and some very good ones, too.

"But I always try to give my very best to reach that standard."

De Gea has already kept seven cleans in the Premier League this campaign and he hopes to make it eight on Saturday and guide United to victory when they host Swansea City at Old Trafford.

"They are a good side. They are the sort of team that likes to play football and enjoy possession of the ball.

"It's true that last season they made life difficult for us and we lost both games against them. I know we haven't done so well against them in the recent past, but it's a new year and so we'll obviously be giving it everything at Old Trafford in front of our own fans in order to secure the win."

De Bruyne: Low price tag cost me success at Chelsea

    kevin-de-bruyne-cropped_1pvrld9gr1rp71l9ebetui7fs2.jpg

Manchester City star Kevin De Bruyne feels that he would have had a better chance of succeeding at Chelsea had the Blues paid big money for him.

The Belgium international joined Chelsea from Genk in January 2012 for a transfer fee in the region of £7 million but eventually left the club on a permanent basis for Wolfsburg in 2014 after failing to secure regular first-team action.

He quickly became a key figure at the Bundesliga outfit and earned himself a big-money move to City at the start of this season, where he has wasted no time making a name for himself.

De Bruyne believes that his £55m pricetag has been beneficial to him rather than a hindrance and argues that things could have panned out differently at Chelsea had he arrived on the back of a mega-money transfer.

"It makes a huge difference [whether a club paid a lot of money for you]," he told La Derniere Heure.

"I would have played more at Chelsea had they paid as much for me as City did. That's the way things work in this business."

De Bruyne has quickly become an integral part of Manuel Pellegrini's side and is loving life at the Etihad Stadium.

"Everything has gone really well for me. It normally takes a bit of time to adapt to your new surroundings but I immediately got to play a lot due to injuries and that sped things up a bit," the 24-year-old added.

"It's great to play for an attacking team like City. It gives me more space. If I didn't play well at Wolfsburg, the team struggled as well. That's not the case here at City.

"We have a lot of stars but everyone acts normal. There are no groups within the team, we all get along very well. It's hard to compare this group to that of Chelsea. Maybe we are more united."

The attacking midfielder won the Belgian league title with Genk in 2010-11 but has yet to taste success in the Premier League and he hopes to change that in 2015-16.

"The Premier League title is one of our main objectives. Most of my team-mates have already won the league before with City but not me," De Bruyne remarked.

"The Champions League is something else. Anything can happen there. The Premier League title is the result of consistent performances."

Klopp welcomes hectic January for Liverpool

    jurgenklopp-cropped_y7clgmxkpkaa1ni1hho9pko1s.jpg

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp welcomes his team's hectic January, which could prove a decisive month.

The German's side start 2016 with seven games in 25 days, including a League Cup semi-final and matches against Arsenal and Manchester United.

But Klopp played down any concerns over the busy schedule, arguing that it is part of being successful.

"I can't say at this moment I've been waiting all my life for Liverpool v Manchester United or Liverpool v Arsenal. We must wait for the next game," he told reporters.

"For us, it's work — and we love it. We have four-games-plus more than most of the other teams this month. That's intense but that's because we've been successful and we have to deal with that."

Liverpool sit seventh in the Premier League ahead of Saturday's trip to West Ham and after back-to-back 1-0 wins, and Klopp feels that his side's tactical flexibility is still developing.

"The good thing in this moment is we have played different styles and adapted against special opponents," he remarked.

"That is the next step. It is not what we always want to do but at a time like this football is not easy."

Luis Enrique: Prolific Suarez has been a goalscorer all his life

    luis-suarez-cropped_g10dgi8kqjfy18e7hnkmdzgxs.jpg

Barcelona coach Luis Enrique is not surprised by Luis Suarez's sublime form in recent weeks and expects more goals from the Uruguay international in the weeks to come.

Suarez leads La Liga's goalscoring charts with 15 goals in as many appearances and has already found the net on 26 occasions in 25 games in all competitions.

The 28-year-old added two more to his tally in the 4-0 win over Betis in midweek and Luis Enrique is hopeful that he will once more be among the goals when Barcelona take on Espanyol on Saturday.

"I am not surprised by the number of goals Suarez is scoring," the Catalan club's coach told the media.

"He has been a goalscorer all his life and will continue to score goals."

Barcelona will still be without Arda Turan and Aleix Vidal for the trip to Espanyol but the duo could make their official debut in Wednesday's Copa del Rey match at Camp Nou against the same opponent some six months after joining.

"The performances of Arda and Aleix Vidal will show how much they have adapted to the team," added Luis Enrique, "but I am happy that they are almost ready to make their debut. They have been waiting for this moment for a long time.

"They will add something extra to the team that we need."

'We have the complete midfield' - Pellegrini plays down Isco & Mane moves

    2137082_heroa.jpg

Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini says he has "the complete midfield" in the face of speculation linking the club with a number of big January deals.

The Blues have been linked with moves for Schalke teenager Leroy Sane and out-of-favour Real Madrid playmaker Isco, who came close to a move to the Etihad Stadium in 2013.

Both men would take up advanced midfield positions should they move to Manchester, Pellegrini believes that his current options are more than good enough.

"With Manchester City there are always rumours, not only midfielders," he said. "Where you have players, it’s always Manchester City interested in them.

"For the moment, with Jesus [Navas], with Kevin [De Bruyne], with David [Silva], with Raheem Sterling, with Yaya [Toure, who can play forward, we have the complete midfielders."

Pellegrini had earlier played down the chances of any major deals in the coming weeks, although he would not close the door completely.

"Really I think the squad is complete," he told reporters. "As always, I said that we are not going to close the window but we are not really thinking of any special players to bring in."

Any hopes City did harbour of bringing in Bundesliga sensation Sane, however, were dashed on Thursday when Schalke general manager Horst Heldt ruled out a sale, specifically to the blue half of Manchester.

"We don't want to sell him and Leroy doesn't want to leave the club," he said. "Even Man City haven't got that much money!"

Wenger: Ozil risking injury, but resting him is too costly

    ozil-arsenal-x-bournemouth-28-12-15_12vjd6ki7pbyp1ij1ibapoy93k.jpg

Arsene Wenger has admitted that worn-out Mesut Ozil is risking injury through too many games, but the playmaker is too important to Arsenal to be rested. The manager recently saw Alexis Sanchez sidelined with a hamstring injury after revealing he needed a break.

And speaking on Friday, he said that Germany international Ozil was in a similar situation as he has led Arsenal to the Premier League summit.

“At the moment, he doesn’t practice a lot. We rest him a lot between the games. I gave him one-week holiday during the international break," Wenger affirmed.“He is a guy who, once the basic fitness is there between the games, he wants to play.

“There are types of players, sometimes the most technical players, it looks like it demands less energy for them to play – it is just natural for them.

“You look as well at the impact he can have on other players."The Arsenal boss went on to explain that leaving players out of the starting line-up was never easy, even if they need a rest.

"The Premier League is very tight and if you go into the decisive game and if you rest players, the other players think subconsciously, they don’t tell you, but they think: ‘Why?’ Even the player himself," he said.

Hiddink: Cesc not to blame for Chelsea's problems

    cesc-fabregas_1h89yej7p2lhr1qtoo9nrggmiq.jpg

Guus Hiddink has defended off-colour Cesc Fabregas, stating that the midfielder is not to blame for Chelsea's poor league position.

After winning the Premier League title in May the Blues have slumped alarmingly, costing Jose Mourinho his job. But the manager's replacement on the Stamford Bridge bench has affirmed that critics of Cesc are wide of the mark.

"I think we are now focusing too much on Cesc regarding this,' Hiddink said ahead of Sunday's trip to Crystal Palace on Sunday."'The whole team weren't doing well until December. It's not just one player."

"When you look at the goals conceded, that's not just our defence that is not good enough. It's not just the defensive players. It's the whole team's performance, defensively and offensively.

"I don't want to focus on just one player who might need a bit more strength or whatever to get back into shape."Despite his public show of support for the ex-Barcelona and Arsenal star, Hiddink admitted that Jon Obi Mikel could be in line for a first-team place.

"It's not about a goalie and 10 outfield players. We want 14 or 15 potentially good players who, when they're needed, can go into the lineup," he explained. "One time it might be Mikel. The next it might be Cesc or others. It depends on the opponents, too.

After 19 games Chelsea languish in 14th place in the Premier League table, having picked up just 20 points in the first half of the season.

Van Gaal considers new striker to solve Manchester United goal woes

    louis-van-gaal-stoke-city-manchester-united-premier-league-26122015_1b6dq1ka2068s1fb74zd328tde.jpg

Louis Van Gaal has admitted he is considering bringing in new strike talent to solve Manchester United's lack of potency in front of goal, while asserting that it is not the only option. After letting Robin Van Persie and Javier Hernandez go in the summer, Van Gaal's has seen his side struggle desperately for goals.

But the manager believes that Anthony Martial and Wayne Rooney can succeed, despite scoring just six times so far in the Premier League. "I think that we need also the luck of a striker," said Van Gaal."There are several players who played in the striker's position. They need luck.

How many players have had chances to score and why didn't they score? You cannot always explain that."We're always looking for solutions in the team, but we still have a good team and we can still score goals. I'm convinced of that. But we also need a little bit of luck."

While recognising that a big-name forward could enter in January, Van Gaal insisted that those already in the team were good enough to succeed.

"It can be solved with money, but also on the training pitch. We're training, but scoring goals is a quality," he said.

"We have that quality, but at this moment there's a lack of confidence at the right time or we need to buy another striker."It's always like that."When questioned on the exits of Van Persie and Chicharito, who has been in electric form for Bayer Leverkusen, he affirmed he let them go to encourage his first-choice strikers.

"I don't believe too much in competition," he explained."I believe in trust and confidence. Maybe that's wrong, but I have done it all my life as a manager. I give trust to the players.

"We could have kept all the strikers, but then there would have been a lot of strikers in the stands. They're not happy then, they want to leave. It's the story of Hernandez, for example. He wants to play, but I can imagine that he can't always play.

"Too many strikers of high quality for the same position is too much pressure, but now I don't have the chance to change. Now I have given confidence to the players to play there."

Martinez: I wouldn't swap Lukaku for anyone

    romelulukaku-cropped_4qy9ylx92yxu136t4o9pxy6gd.jpg

Everton manager Roberto Martinez says he would not swap Romelu Lukaku for Harry Kane or any other striker in the world, as his side prepares to take on Tottenham on Sunday.

Martinez believes the power Lukaku, which has seen him top the Premier League goalscoring charts alongside Jamie Vardy with 15 goals, makes him a dangerous threat for any team.

And the Toffees boss admits his 22-year-old striker has been at a "perfect level" of form since the start of last year.

"I wouldn't swap Rom for anyone," he told a press conference.

"If you look at the attacking force that we have this campaign, it's very, very impressive.

"He became very consistent since Jan 1 last year.

"Maybe other players have dips, real highs and lows. But in January, he hit a perfect level. It's not that he’s just in a good moment. He's been in a good moment for the last 12 months."

Lukaku just edges Kane for goals scored this season, with 18 goals in 23 games in all competitions, while the Spurs striker has scored 13 in 24, but Martinez admitted Kane will require close attention.

"Harry Kane has got real power and pace," Martinez said.

"It makes him a very mobile striker. Normally, you don't get both together. You get the mobility or goal scoring ability.

"Rom and Harry can both drop into certain places on the pitch and they've got the ability to move the ball and get at defenders. But they both share a clinical goal scoring touch.

"Normally, you either get a striker with a lot of mobility to assist others and open spaces, or one who is first and foremost a goal scorer. To get both in one type of player is quite rare."
