Ozil named German Player of the Year for the fourth time

    1144532_heroa.jpg

Mesut Ozil has been named the German player of the year for the fourth time in the last five years.

The Arsenal playmaker lost the crown he had won three times in a row to Toni Kroos in 2014 but has reclaimed the award following a sensational return to form.

More than 51,000 fans voted for Ozil, giving him 45.9 per cent of the vote and a comfortable margin of victory ahead of Thomas Muller (15.9%) and Jonas Hector (13.6%).

Ozil started in all eight of Germany's internationals in 2015 and enjoyed five victories before the November friendly against France, for which he was rested.

At club level, his 16 assists and 87 chances created are the best totals of any player in Europe's top-five leagues this season.

Pochettino: Any team in the top 10 can win the Premier League

    pochettino-cropped_172yncwx25kw1ndvey4gee59n.jpg

Tottenham coach Mauricio Pochettino says the Premier League is so open that any team in the top 10 could win the title.

Just 14 points separate leaders Arsenal from 10th-place Watford after 21 games, with the likes of Leicester City - who trail the Gunners only on goal difference - and Stoke City currently in the mix for Champions League qualification.Pochettino, whose side are seven points off top in fourth, expects the competitive nature of the league to produce a thrilling title race.

"For me, it is the toughest league in the world - it is very open," he told reporters.
"Leicester, [Manchester] City, us and behind us, Liverpool, [Manchester] United, West Ham... it is a very open league and so far, all can happen."All the top 10 can have the possibility to win the league. You can guess who but there are a lot of games ahead."

Tottenham suffered a disappointing 1-0 defeat to top-four rivals Leicester at White Hart Lane on Wednesday but Pochettino insisted the setback would not add to the temptation to dip into the transfer market.

"It is true we missed a great opportunity to establish ourselves at the top. You feel disappointed but you need to carry on and keep working hard," he reflected."But the way we played is nothing to worry about for the future. We cannot change after one result our plan and our view about our squad.

"I have explained a lot of times that if we find the right profile and the player that can improve our squad, we work hard for that. If we can add some player, we are open to it."

Liverpool need 'strong mentality' to beat Man Utd, says Kolo Toure

    kolo-toure-liverpool_1haecxge2sfxy10nx17cnioprt.jpg

Liverpool defender Kolo Toure believes his team must show a "strong mentality" and use the support of a loud home crowd if they are to beat Manchester United on Sunday.

The Reds' dramatic 3-3 draw against Arsenal left them ninth in the Premier League going into the crunch clash against their arch-rivals, who are three points ahead in sixth spot.

Toure, 34, says he has noticed a significant improvement in the quality of Liverpool's character in recent weeks, while he expects the Anfield support to play a key role.

He does, though, accept a better defensive performance will be needed against Louis van Gaal's United."It is going to be another big game for us," he told reporters.

"There has been a big, big improvement recently [in our mental strength] and that is very important when you are at a big club. You can't ever give up. When you refuse to lose games, you often find yourself winning them."We showed character and resilience against Arsenal and we didn't give up until the end of the game. It was a crazy game, a crazy night.

"It wasn't a good for a defender though, conceding three goals, so in the next game coming up against United, we need to show more power defensively. "These are the kind of games you can win if you are strong mentally. If we can be strong and the fans push us like they did against Arsenal - that can give us something extra.

"It is great to see the fans behind us. You know that in a lot of games it is only decided towards the end. Players get tired and when you have that push from your fans you can feel the difference."That is what you need. We just need to keep putting in the same level of effort and the results will come."

Real Madrid & Atletico given La Liga backing following Fifa sanctions

    antoine-griezmann-raphael-varane-atletico-madrid-real-madrid-la-liga_20zsju4fbdq01t290xpe4g9p7.jpg

La Liga has offered its support to Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid after the clubs were hit with Fia transfer sanctions.

Both Madrid giants will be unable to register new players during the next two complete transfer windows as a consequence of breaches "relating to the international transfer and registration of players under the age of 18".

Earlier on Thursday, Madrid and Atletico protested their innocence and announced they will appeal against the punishments, with La Liga confirming it will stand by each team. The league believes that the penalties imposed are "disproportionate" and represent "excessive punishment".

In an official statement, La Liga said: "Following the sanction of the Fifa Disciplinary Committee to Real Madrid CF and Club Atletico de Madrid, as a result of having infringed the rules on international transfers of minors, La Liga wishes to express that Spanish football through its clubs supports the policy of protecting minors and the concern for their development and for their training.

"Furthermore, it also proposed to the RFEF [Royal Spanish Football Federation] an adequate system of compensation for training clubs, perfectly compatible with the development of minors.

"The conduct of Real Madrid CF and Club Atletico de Madrid has been always in favour of the respect, the interest and the training of the child. This has been evident in the various meetings held in recent seasons with specialists from all the clubs from La Liga in this field.

"Therefore, at La Liga, we believe that the penalty imposed is disproportionate, out of place and is an excessive punishment for both clubs based on their behaviour and the circumstances of each case."

Barcelona were hit with similar sanctions in April 2014 – eventually served in January 2015 and the subsequent close season following a failed appeals process – and La Liga believes Fifa laws in this area are contrary to European Union legislation and do not protect young players.

The statement added: "La Liga has conducted analysis on the adequacy of the rules of 'protection' under FIFA, as well as the different standards of the European Union, the Swiss state [FIFA is headquartered in Switzerland] and Spain.

"Based on this [La Liga] will denounce to the appropriate bodies the current part of the regulation for the transfer of players under age, which does not conform to the law of the protection of minors.

"After learning of the sanctions to FC Barcelona, Real Madrid CF and Club Atletico de Madrid, La Liga considers that the aforementioned law does not really protect the child."

Atletico Madrid 3-0 Rayo Vallecano (agg 4-1): Griezmann at the double as Simeone’s men progress

    antoinegriezmann-cropped_el1off9nmztt1apa1zcm9k0yr.jpg

Atletico Madrid are through to the quarter-finals of the Copa del Rey after an Antoine Griezmann double inspired them to a 3-0 win over Rayo Vallecano and a 4-1 aggregate success.

Diego Simeone's La Liga leaders went into Thursday's second leg at the Vicente Calderon with a slight advantage on away goals having drawn 1-1 at Vallecas in the first leg.

But Atletico - hit with a transfer ban for the next two windows by Fifa earlier in the day - were made to work hard by their neighbours, who produced a battling performance that belied a league position of second bottom in Spain's top flight.

Indeed, chances proved few and far between as both teams struggled to take advantage of attacking openings.

But Angel Correa broke the deadlock with a moment of inspiration, the 20-year-old forward finding the net in the 40th minute with a powerful effort that left Rayo goalkeeper Yoel with no chance.

Atletico laboured in their attempts to put the game and tie beyond doubt but did so 10 minutes from time thanks to Griezmann, who then pounced on a goalkeeping error to score his second of the game in injury time.

Rayo started positively and Adrian Embarba tested Atletico goalkeeper Miguel Angel Moya in the 13th minute with a low shot on the turn from the edge of the area.

Despite enjoying long periods of possession, Atletico struggled to create clear-cut opportunities, although midfielder Thomas Partey drew a fingertip save from Yoel with a fine header from a left-wing free-kick just after the half-hour mark.

But Correa did open the scoring five minutes before half-time in stunning fashion.

The Argentina international met Yannick Ferreira Carrasco's lay-off with a fearsome right-footed strike from just inside the 18-yard box that cannoned in off the inside of the crossbar.

Correa was then sent through on goal by an excellent lofted pass from Jesus Gamez, but Rayo defender Quini recovered superbly to divert his square pass for Jackson Martinez behind for a corner.

Embarba flashed an effort wide as Rayo sought to send the tie to extra-time before Atletico striker Martinez was denied by a one-on-one save from Yoel, with Ze Castro preventing Griezmann from converting the rebound.

But from the resulting corner Griezmann ensured Atletico's progress, bundling the ball in at the second attempt from Stefan Savic's near-post flick-on.

And Griezmann sealed a comfortable win in stoppage time, when he nicked the ball beyond Yoel and placed it into the empty net for his 16th goal of the season.

Granada 0-3 Valencia (0-7 agg): Neville's side cruise into Copa quarters

    gary-neville_1g81x2ah20mz71jslhqmg31rvv.jpg

Valencia eased into the last eight of the Copa del Rey by completing a comprehensive 7-0 aggregate victory with a 3-0 second-leg win at Granada.

Gary Neville's side did the damage in last week's last-16 first-leg clash at Mestalla in running out 4-0 victors, thanks in the main to an Alvaro Negredo hat-trick.

But goals from Wilfried Zahibo and substitute Paco Alcacer, plus a late penalty from Pablo Piatti, added further gloss to the scoreline in Thursday's second leg, with Valencia now safely in the hat for Friday's quarter-final draw. Zahibo took advantage of some questionable goalkeeping from Ivan Kelava to nod Valencia into a 1-0 lead on the night three minutes before the break.

Neville replaced first-leg hero Negredo with Alcacer in the 63rd minute - and the Spain striker made an immediate impact, clinically finishing past Kelava just seconds after coming on.

And Valencia rounded off an easy victory six minutes from time, when Piatti coolly dispatched the spot-kick given after Zakaria Bakkali was clumsily brought down in the area.

:cool:Mata: I would advise anyone in the world to play in England

    juan-mata-manchester-united-west-brom-07112015_f8ju6g28rzs51ra4ivbq3vkqh.jpg

Manchester United midfielder Juan Mata wants to see more of football's global superstars in the Premier League.

The Spain international is himself a record signing for the club, having cost approximately £37 million when he moved from Chelsea, who spent £23.5m acquiring him from La Liga outfit Valencia.

The Spaniard is now in his sixth season in the Premier League and wants to see the likes of Lionel Messi and Neymar join him.

Mata said he would recommend England to anyone looking for a challenge.
"I enjoy everything about football in this country," he told the Mirror. "Since the moment I came over here, more than four years ago, I have enjoyed every minute."I think it's a great experience to play football here and I always say the same.

"I would advise any player in the world to try to play in the Premier League for at least one season and realise how big and how massive football is in this country.
"We're talking about respect from the fans, great organisation in the league - I really like it."

The Premier League did not have one representative in the FIFPro World XI but Mata says while the Premier League is not famed for possession football, it was still a high-quality league to play in."Obviously it's true that many more teams in Spain try to play possession football, but I still really like it here," he said.

"I'm not the strongest player ever, but if you are clever enough to try to find spaces, you can still have time on the ball, you can create chances and enjoy your football, do your skills, assist and score."I think English football can give you that opportunity.

"Obviously, it's true that it's more physical - the football is stronger, it's quicker, it's box-to-box, and so you have to be ready, physically and mentally, for it. But I think it's good for any player."

Simeone adamant goals will come for misfiring Jackson Martinez

    jackson-martinez_b1mk33ger2t91knhr02znyg1k.jpg

Diego Simeone remains confident the goals will come for Jackson Martinez after the striker drew another blank in Atletico Madrid's 3-0 Copa del Rey last-16 second-leg win over Rayo Vallecano.

Angel Correa's 40th-minute strike and two goals from Antoine Griezmann ensured a 4-1 aggregate success and a place in the last eight for Simeone's men.

Griezmann's brace took his tally for the season to 16 goals while Martinez - who moved to Atletico from Porto in June last year for €35 million - has just three to his name. The Colombia forward was denied by Rayo goalkeeper Yoel moments before Griezmann's first 10 minutes from time.

Asked about the contrast between the form of Griezmann and Martinez, Simeone - who would not be drawn on questions surrounding the transfer ban imposed on Atletico by Fifa on Thursday - said: "They are situations with which one must live.

"But I liked Jackson's game a lot. The goals will arrive because he has them [in his game]. It is a matter of waiting."

On his team's overall performance, Simeone added: "In the first 20 minutes Rayo had good control of the ball. We switched to 4-4-2 and pressed and had chances. After the break we were stronger physically.

"We are in the quarters and we see the majority of the teams [still in the competition] are in the top half. We are having a nice Copa. At this level, all the rivals are complicated."

Meanwhile, Rayo coach Paco Jemez said: "Up until 2-0 we were doing okay in the game. They scored a great first goal and that calmed them down, right at the worst time for us.

"After the second we needed to go for it and we knew Atleti could score more. Now we have to focus on the league and join forces for what's to come."

Lacazette: I am ready for summer Premier League move

    alexandre-lacazette_1livd0sf96k7y1waecmp0fafcb.jpg

Alexandre Lacazette says he wants to move to the Premier League and feels he will be ready to play in England this summer. The Lyon forward was strongly linked with a transfer to England ahead of this season after a stunning 2014-15 that saw him score 31 goals in all competitions.

The 24-year-old says the speculation did unsettle him at the time but that he is now keen to move to the Premier League, although he warns he is not willing to sit on the bench.“Now I am used to dealing with all the rumours. But when they started, maybe two years ago, I was destabilised a little by it,” he told The Telegraph.

“But now I am used to it. For me, it’s not so hard because I was not ready [to leave] two years ago or even last season.

“I was not ready then and my goal is not to go to England for the sake of going to England and I don’t want to go to a club and sit on the bench.“So at that time it was not hard for me to stay here. It was a question of waiting until I was ready and I am now ready this summer.”

However, Lacazette insists he has no interest of moving in the January transfer window as he still has ambitions he wants to achieve with Lyon."I will stay at Lyon in January," Lacazette added.

"I have some personal objectives to follow from now until the end of the season. Then at the end of the season we will see. I will speak about staying or not at Lyon.“The first goal is to improve the position of the team and make sure we finish in second place and qualify for the Champions League. The second objective is more personal, it is about scoring goals.

"There is no formal agreement that I will go but the president [Jean-Michel Aulas] knows that it’s a possibility that I will leave Lyon at the end of the season.“It won’t be difficult [to leave] but it will be something special, weird – not weird in a bad way but because I have been at Lyon all my life, 24 years.

“I love Lyon and have only known Lyon, so obviously it will be a big change if I do go but a change that I am ready for and one that will be good for me and my career. It would be the end of one life and the start of another exciting one."

Monaco wanted Falcao to return from Chelsea loan

    1962762_heroa.jpg

Monaco vice-president Vadim Vasilyev has revealed that the club wanted Radamel Falcao to return from his loan spell at Chelsea but the move was stopped because of the striker’s injury problems.

The 29-year-old has made just 10 appearances since joining the Premier League champions last summer and is currently unable to train, with Jose Mourinho revealing in November that the striker has suffered “an important muscular injury”.

Vasilyev has now revealed that Monaco had assessed Falcao with a view to allowing him to return until the end of the season.

“It's true that we have spoken several times with Falcao,” Vasilyev told RMC.

“The first idea was that he returned to Monaco to play the second half of the season.

“He came to us, he was assessed by our doctors. Unfortunately, he was injured. We took the decision, it is better that he remains at Chelsea.”

Has Van Gaal really triggered a Rooney renaissance?

    2522062_heroa.jpg

“We don't speak any more about Wayne Rooney. You have criticised him, I don't.”

The context behind the last question which Louis van Gaal fielded at St James’ Park on Tuesday should not be forgotten in the farcical furore which followed after the Manchester United manager’s “fat man” jibe directed at a journalist.

Wayne Rooney’s recent upturn in form could not have been better timed. A fantastic winner against Swansea was followed by a coolly-taken injury-time penalty which saw off Sheffield United in the FA Cup. Only Paul Dummett’s late screamer for Newcastle in midweek denied Rooney a third winner in three successive games to begin 2016.

His four strikes so far in the calendar year tell only part of the story. One of football’s oldest sayings claims that ‘form is temporary, class is permanent’ and the United captain has proved over the last three matches that there is more than a grain of truth in the oft-used cliche.

Rooney’s run of poor performances had lasted so long that many doubted his ability to ever bounce back. Now 30 and in his 14th Premier League season, he is at a stage of his career where far greater work is required to arrest a slump than might have been necessary previously. And after his elongated struggles of 2015, the England skipper was in desperate need of a pick-me-up.

Whether it was Van Gaal’s decision to leave him out of the starting line-up against Stoke City on Boxing Day, or simply something which clicked for him in that fixture against Swansea, Rooney has found his feet once more. United have been crying out for some inspiration from their most experienced player and he is finally beginning to deliver just that.

Given the eight-match winless run which preceded it, and the snipes at United’s style of play, they needed a leader to stand up and be counted. While it is true that Rooney went missing in earlier games when he might have otherwise turned around his side’s form, he has shown since the turn of the year that he still has the ability to drag United up by the boot straps.

Paul Scholes has been United’s most vocal critic in recent months, and his analysis of the team’s attacking against Sheffield United was particularly notable.

“It’s time for a change in football, in the style of football,” Scholes told BT Sport. “Pass the ball to Wayne Rooney! I think we said he had 34 touches today in the whole game. This is Wayne Rooney!

“Get the ball to your best players, your Anthony Martials who can beat a man, your Wayne Rooneys, who’s one of the best centre forwards. You should get the ball to him but too often they’re not, they keep the ball and they’re happy with that 70 per cent of possession again and I truly believe [Van Gaal] will be happy with that performance.”

In training after that match, Van Gaal had United running through drills as ever, but placed greater emphasis on their attacking play. And on Tuesday their passing was quicker and their tempo was higher, especially in the opening 30 minutes. They sacrificed the majority of possession to Newcastle, but made more of the ball when they had it. Crucially, as demanded by Scholes, they got the ball to Rooney more often and reaped the rewards.

After his penalty opener he could well have grabbed a second when sliding a shot past the far post, but he kept on making the telling runs and, notably, he was being picked out in a way that United have not managed in some time. His assist for Jesse Lingard’s goal was delightful but his strike to put United 3-2 up was even better, sending a drilled effort sailing past Rob Elliott. This was much more like the Rooney we know.

Van Gaal has backed his skipper constantly when questioned about the No.10’s lack of form, and he will be more delighted than anyone that Rooney is beginning to show signs of his old self again. But on Sunday another vital game awaits against Liverpool at Anfield.

There’s a chance that the manager will be out of work if United lose, while for Rooney there is still no pain quite like being on the wrong end of a Liverpool victory. If his team-mates can show the urgency necessary to provide Rooney with greater ammunition once more, United have every chance of picking up the three points that would give Van Gaal some much-needed respite.

He might still be a long way short of vintage Wayne Rooney but he remains Manchester United’s most likely match-winner, and nobody recognises that more than his manager.

:(Pereira open to Man Utd loan exit

    andreaspereira-cropped_1d5ptkhi3r1ol1e4fg50nc19qo.jpg

Andreas Pereira is open to leaving Manchester United on a loan deal in January.

Pereira has made seven appearances in all competitions this season but has been handed just two starts by manager Louis van Gaal, with both coming in the League Cup.When asked about the possibility of a loan move, Pereira told reporters: "Perhaps. We will see what happens. I want to stay here, of course, but you never know.

"PSV helped me a lot when I was young and United have helped make me the player I am today."They gave me everything that I had to learn and I’m learning every day here."At United, they teach me about things off the pitch as well, how to deal with stuff with your family and how to be a man.

"That part is very important, not just the football side but off the pitch as well. PSV helped me a lot with that too."

Pereira said he was happy to wait for his chance at Old Trafford, should he not get a loan move."You just have to handle these kind of things, keep waiting for your opportunity and I think that's what I'm doing, and just keep working hard," he said.

"Of course you want to play every game, but I have been on the bench. When I come on I want to help my team, so hopefully next time [maybe I can start]."

Wenger unsure on Alexis fitness gamble

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is unsure whether to gamble with Alexis Sanchez's fitness in the match with Stoke City on Sunday.

The Chile international has not played since the 1-1 draw at Norwich City in November due to a hamstring injury, but is nearing a comeback.

Wenger has praised Sanchez's attitude in recovering from injury and will consider if it is worth playing him at the Britannia Stadium – a ground Arsenal have not won in their last five visits.

Wenger said: "The question mark is about Sanchez, he has two decisive days – Friday and Saturday. "He is fit and has worked very hard. The decision we have to take is whether to take a gamble on his injury."

And the Arsenal boss hopes Sanchez's return – along with the likes of Danny Wellbeck and Jack Wilshere – can give them a lift as they continue to battle for three trophies.

"At the moment we are in the beginning of January, top of the league, qualified in the Champions League and still in the FA Cup, so we can make it a fantastic season," he continued."The fact we have the injuries coming back can help."

The Frenchman also confirmed his squad had come through the dramatic 3-3 draw against Liverpool at Anfield on Wednesday unscathed, and revealed new signing Mohamed Elneny was in contention to play this weekend.

Wenger added: "Elneny, he is available for selection. There is a possibility he is in the squad on Sunday.

"He is a promising player. I expect him to develop with us into a very strong player. He can defend and attack. "I have not decided yet how everyone recovered, but there are no new injuries from Liverpool game."

'I like Zidane, but I hope he fails at Madrid'

    zinedinezidane-cropped_l5c7lyoi1q0h15h1ljx5y44q8.jpg

Barcelona full-back Aleix Vidal has always been a fan of Zinedine Zidane, but he hopes the France legend fails to to pick up any silverware as head coach at Real Madrid.

Zidane is a hero in the Spanish capital, having seen out his playing career at the club between 2001 and 2006, winning La Liga and Champions League titles during that time.

The 43-year-old is now the latest coach tasked with brining silverware to Madrid after he replaced Rafael Benitez at the helm of the first team, and his tenure started with a 5-0 Liga demolition of Deportivo La Coruna last weekend.Vidal says admired Zidane as a player, but is desperate to deny him the opportunity to enjoy any success this season.

"They seem to have had a good start, but the titles get handed out at the end of the season," he told RAC."I hope he does not win any. I've always been a big fan of Zidane, but now I cannot wish him any luck."

Vidal finally made his Barca debut this month after joining from Sevilla in the previous transfer window and he feels he can only improve by playing with the world's best, including Ballon d'Or winner Lionel Messi."Virtually all the players here are the best in the world," he added. "You can learn a lot from them.

"In training you can see that Leo is the best. When you are face to face with him you know you have few options."

Wenger: Real Madrid's transfer ban will not be enforced

Arsene Wenger predicts that Real Madrid’s appeal for their transfer ban will be successful.

The Spanish club, along with Atletico Madrid, have been suspended from signing players for the next two windows after breaching rules regarding transfers of players under the age of 18.

Both Madrid and Atletico have denied the claims and insist they will appeal, and the Arsenal manager expects the decision to be overturned.

    “They will appeal,” said Wenger.

“They will cancel the ban and they will be allowed to buy in the next two transfer windows. That’s what will happen.”

:cool:Man Utd consider record-breaking James bid

Manchester United could be set to end James Rodriguez’s troubles at Real Madrid by making a British transfer record bid for the Colombia international.

James has seen his career at the Santiago Bernabeu go off the boil under former coach Rafa Benitez and his successor Zinedine Zidane, making only seven league starts so far in 2015-16. His recent exclusion from the Frenchman’s first starting XI against Deportivo La Coruna has sparked speculation that the 24-year-old’s time in Madrid could be nearing an early end.

And Goal understands that United have been alerted to James’ potential availability by the player’s agent Jorge Mendes, who has developed an extensive relationship with the Old Trafford club in recent years on a number of notable transfers.

Any move for James could see United spend in excess of the £59.7 million (€75m) they paid to land Angel Di Maria from Madrid in 2014, with this summer potentially the prime moment for the Reds to swoop.

Mendes has become known as one of football’s biggest-hitting agents, with players including Di Maria, Cristiano Ronaldo, Radamel Falcao, David de Gea and Thiago Silva in his portfolio, and United have been a key ally in recent years.

James has become an increasingly disconsolate figure this term, with his current form being a point of major contention in his native Colombia. With his wife, Daniela Ospina having remained in South America for a period of more than three months to take part in the latest series of TV talent show ‘Dancing with the Stars’, the former Porto star has seen neither his wife nor two-year-old daughter for some time.

That in turn has led to speculation that his marriage could be on the rocks, with his poor form being a consequence of the personal toll. Yet Mendes’ attempts to open lines of communication regarding a transfer could see James given a fresh start in England.

United boss Louis van Gaal has admitted that he would like to sign another forward, bemoaning a lack of pace in the final third. And while he has spoken of a winger being a key target, the capture of one of the world’s foremost creative attackers would represent a coup for United.

The club made an initial bid for Barcelona star Neymar in the summer of 2015 and retain a strong interest in the Brazilian, while Real Madrid lynchpin Gareth Bale remains a key target at Old Trafford.

But Madrid’s transfer ban looks set to provide a major obstacle in their pursuit of either Bale or former United favourite Ronaldo, as well as a possible sale of De Gea to the Spanish giants. However, James’ current slump could render him sellable despite his position at the Bernabeu as one of the vaunted ‘Galacticos’.

Beyond his abilities on the pitch, James’ significant commercial status is also considered to be a huge attraction to United and his early difficulties with Zidane could well entice them into the market.

James joined Madrid from Monaco in an €80 million deal in August 2014 after his starring performances for Colombia at the World Cup in Brazil, paving the way for Angel di Maria’s exit to United in the process.

Klopp: Van Gaal is good but Ferguson is like football's John Lennon

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has defended Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal while labelling Old Trafford legend Sir Alex Ferguson "the John Lennon of football".

The Reds meet their fierce rivals at Anfield on Sunday in a crucial Premier League fixture, but the former Borussia Dortmund boss was complimentary about his present and former foes.

Klopp was pleased to hear Ferguson had praised his ability and spoke of his worry at how his presence in the dugout could pose United a big challenge at the weekend."That is good, but now I have to prove it!" said Klopp in response to the Scot's statements.

"I had really good moments with Sir Alex. I needed 10 minutes to understand his language, but then it was OK! For a manager best thing you can do is sit there and listen to him. It was an honour to talk with him.

"Maybe he is the greatest ever - the John Lennon of football."Van Gaal - one of Ferguson's successors - has been criticised for his team's playing style on the other hand, with the Red Devils languishing in sixth.

Nevertheless, Klopp paid tribute to his counterpart's track record despite their different views of football, citing past battles when they were at Dortmund and Bayern Munich respectively.

"Louis van Gaal is one of the most successful managers in the world, he has won a lot of titles and has a special idea of football," the German added."As an opponent you have to respect this and work with the information.Newcastle was a special game, they did really well. United reacted good in this game.

"We are different characters. He is more experienced. I don't know Louis too well but we have had a few intensive games. We both want to be successful."I won't say we have got a better idea. It is not about possession or counter-pressing. We are different characters.

"I might be a bit more lively on the sidelines but sometimes that is not always good."
