Mourinho reacts to Guardiola's Manchester City move

    2419232_heroa.jpg

Pep Guardiola's move to Manchester City may have woken up football on a dull deadline day, but it wasn't enough to rock Jose Mourinho.

The former Chelsea boss was at Wembley on Monday to support Gianni Infantino's bid to become Fifa president.

But as Mourinho strolled in to take his seat, the 53-year-old batted away a question about a potential move to Manchester United with a swift shake of the head...

Manchester United fans DEMAND Mourinho after Guardiola's City confirmation

    2131792_heroa.jpg

The worst kept secret in football has finally been revealed as it's now been confirmed that Pep Guardiola will be heading to Manchester City this summer.

But where does that leave Manchester United?

A lack of excitement, an early Champions League exit, and a limp Premier League title challenge could spell the end for Louis van Gaal at the end of the season. And if that actually happens, United supporters seem to be demanding only one man...

Mourinho might be Man United's only hope now Pep's joined the noisy neighbours

They may have already known that Pep Guardiola was heading for Manchester City but now that football’s worst-kept secret is out, Manchester United have a serious question to answer in terms of their response to their noisy neighbours’ major coup.Is now the time to swallow their pride and hand Jose Mourinho the job he longs for?

United have done what they can to publicly back under-fire boss Louis van Gaal, but few at this stage believe the Dutchman will be in charge beyond the end of the 2015-16 season. After their early exit from the Champions League and a slump in the autumn and winter which saw them slide out of the Premier League title race, the club are becoming used to being an irrelevance when the big trophies are dealt out.

The arrival of Guardiola across the city throws United’s future plan into sharp focus once again. The Red Devils remain hopeful of competing for some of the world’s greatest players, but there must now be a serious fear that City are well placed to usurp them in a direct battle for pretty much anyone.

Pellegrini had remained tight-lipped over his own future following Guardiola's announcement, but now City have confirmed that the Chilean, who signed a contract extension until 2017 last August, will be not be staying on beyond the end of the season.

City are the club with the burgeoning academy setup. City are the club challenging for trophies year on year. City are the club with a real vision. And now City are the club with Guardiola.

United’s official plan is for Van Gaal to see out his three-year contract before handing the manager’s job to Ryan Giggs in the summer of 2017, but in truth the club’s position as a quickly declining force looks set to force a rethink.

Guardiola’s name has been brought up when people speak of Giggs’ credentials, but the Spaniard’s reputation at Barcelona was built on entirely differentcircumstances. Barca were attempting to put a forgettable period behind them and had the youth setup in place to provide an unprecedented foundation. United have no such basis, and Giggs would be expected to start from scratch given the current state of the club.

Giggs would undoubtedly be the romantic option, but at 42 the managerial rookie would need to hit the ground running to keep the wolves from the door. And the presence of Guardiola at City will make each United defeat an even bigger event.

While Mauricio Pocchetino would be a great addition for the United-esque football he would be likely to bring with him from Tottenham, and Diego Simeone has the kind of steel and fight that might be needed post-Van Gaal, Mourinho now looks better placed than ever before to squeeze his way into the reckoning.

The club’s dislike for Mourinho’s style of management has been well documented. Most pointed of all was Sir Bobby Charlton’s insistence that the Portuguese’s eye-gouge of the late Tito Vilanova in 2011 was an example as to why he could never manage United.

“A United manager wouldn’t do that,” said the United director and playing legend in an ITV4 documentary. “He’s a great manager but that’s as far as I would go. He pontificates too much for my liking.”

However, United might now be backed into a corner by City’s Guardiola move.Indeed, they may have backed themselves into a corner by not doing more to land the Bayern Munich boss themselves, and then sticking with Van Gaal for this long.

If Guardiola and City really want a United target, what can the Red Devils do about it with Giggs or Pochettino or Simeone in charge? United will seem like a small-time project compared to the fast-rising behemoth at the Etihad Stadium. If they have Mourinho, there’s still a chance that people will believe they are in the running here and now.

Mourinho typically last a short time at clubs. His sacking by Chelsea in December came just two-and-a-half years after he said he wanted to be with the Blues for the longer term, and just seven months after they were crowned champions for the fifth time - three of them under the 53-year-old. Now, though, he craves the chance to manage United.

Mourinho would not give the fans the football they want. He would not stick around to build a 20-year legacy. He would not give the club the clean-cut brand they want.

But many a clean-cut brand which delivers good football under a banner of continuity can be found midway down the table in various leagues around the world. United need to get back winning again, and City are their biggest hurdle to doing so.

What he will do is go toe-to-toe with his arch-enemy in the City hotseat. He has done it before and would relish the idea of doing it again at a closer distance than ever before. His record suggests he might even chip in the odd league title or two. Old Trafford is just the kind of environment Mourinho would revel in.

Their principles are more than understandable, and the hope of bringing through Ryan Giggs is certainly an admirable nod to the club’s wonderful history. But if United want to challenge and provide a serious alternative to City for the next half-decade at least, then Mourinho might be their only hope.Guardiola’s appointment on the other side of town is a significant game-changer.

Hat-trick hero Ronaldo makes more goalscoring history

    2613872_heroa.jpg

If you listen to his critics, Cristiano Ronaldo's best days are behind him, but the Real Madrid star showed he still has plenty left in the tank after scoring yet another hat-trick on Sunday.

Prior to the 6-0 win over Espanyol, the 30-year-old had scored 16 goals in 21 La Liga appearances this term - a commendable tally but still some way short of his usual exploits in front of the target.

But Ronaldo struck three times to draw level with Luis Suarez at the top of the division's goalscoring charts and create yet more history in front of goal.

In the two games meetings with Espanyol this season, the Portugal captain has scored eight goals, the first time any player has achieved that feat against the same opponent in a La Liga campaign this century.

One of his strikes came from the penalty spot - meaning he has converted from 12 yards seven times this term - more than any other player across Europe's five biggest leagues in 2015-16.

He's also won 14 penalties in the league, at least five more than any other player since 09-10.
Ronaldo was joined on the scoresheet by Karim Benzema and James Rodriguez as Madrid took their tally for the season to 64 league goals. No other club has scored more in Europe's major divisions.

Klopp: Liverpool right to pull plug on Teixeira deal

    jurgenklopp-cropped_19j3x4famltak1lr2qiuorj8xm.jpg

Jurgen Klopp says Liverpool supporters must "trust" the club's decision not to sign Alex Teixeira in the January transfer window.

Liverpool were reportedly priced out by Shakhtar Donetsk after the Ukrainian club demanded substantially more than what the Premier League side offered for the Brazilian.

The English giants reportedly put in a £38million bid for Teixeira, but Shakhtar wanted close to £50m for the 26-year-old.

And Klopp has urged Liverpool fans to stand by the club's decision not to pursue the forward.

"It’s very, very important that, yes, you can trust us," the German said.

"It was a common decision [on Teixeira]. We said, 'We can't play this game until the end'.

"We made offers, I won't say too much about that, but they were realistic, absolutely, with the premium of it being January, the Premier League, all the plusses you have when you make negotiations.

"But it was a case of, 'If you don't want it, OK, we can't change the situation, both for now and the future'.

"It’s not that we haven't got money or anything, but you have to work respectfully and responsibly. That's what we do. "We will do things, for sure. Not in this window, but we will. It is like it is and it's not you should buy and sell, buy and sell."

Klopp believes he has enough forward power with Daniel Sturridge and Divock Origi, as well as attacking midfielder Philippe Coutinho, who is set to return to first-team training this week.

"We have enough strikers, if they are all fit. So we have four strikers - although some are injured - plus Roberto [Firmino]," he said.

"If we were to find a solution in the offence that helps us not for three weeks, but three months or more, I would say OK.

"If we had, then we would’ve done it - but only for the right price, the normal price and not something else.

"The situation that we had wasn’t too easy but gave us the chance to show more faith and trust in young players than normal."

'Doumbia will improve Mitrovic and Perez'

    seydoudoumbia-cropped_1k05c776cjtli1m939sas0jj0c.jpg

Steve McClaren is convinced new signing Seydou Doumbia will improve Newcastle United's inexperienced strikers.

On Monday, the Magpies signed Doumbia from Roma on a loan deal until the end of the season, with the option to make the move permanent, subject to the Ivory Coast striker being granted the appropriate visa.

Doumbia has managed just two goals in 13 Serie A appearances since joining the Giallorossi and spent the first half of the campaign on loan at CSKA Moscow, who he left for the Italian capital in January 2015.

However, he has experience of playing Champions League football with CSKA Moscow and Newcastle boss McClaren believes Doumbia can help the club's young forwards like Ayoze Perez and Aleksandar Mitrovic improve their game.

"A lot of the burden has been placed on them [Perez and Mitrovic]," McClaren told Newcastle's official website.

"Mitro has had ankle problems but has never missed a day's training and has played through it. He's been fantastic for us, as has Ayoze. "It's easy to forget how young they are and how they are still learning the game and developing.

"We needed someone with a bit more experience in there as we've fallen short in that department. Hopefully Seydou can come in and make his mark at this club over the next few months and help us get some wins."

Newcastle, who are 18th in the Premier League, have been active in the transfer window with Doumbia joining Henri Saivet, Jonjo Shelvey and Andros Townsend in moving to St James' Park to aid the club's battle against relegation.

Klopp: Guardiola will want to dominate Premier League

    pepguardiolajurgenklopp-cropped_ue34x3x47bh31xep9jxird5bn.jpg

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp believes Pep Guardiola "wants to win everything in England" with Manchester City.

City boss Manuel Pellegrini announced on Monday he would leave the Etihad Stadium at the end of the season and the club confirmed Guardiola would take the reins on a three-year deal.

Guardiola will conclude his three-year spell at Bayern Munich this term and former Borussia Dortmund coach Klopp believes City have appointed a tactician of the highest calibre in his old adversary.

"I don't have any advice," he said.

“At Bayern he has enough work to do, but when he is here it will be a very warm welcome like I had when I came here.

"He is one of the best managers in the world, no doubt about this. He had two big, big clubs where he has worked at and now he will do his job at Manchester City.

"Pep won everything in Spain, nearly everything in Germany, so I think he wants to win everything in England. That is clear."

Klopp's Liverpool will take on Pellegrini's City in the League Cup final at the end of this month and he added: "I know [Guardiola], but not well enough to know something about his real targets or reasons for coming here.

"The rumour for a long time was Man City and Pep seemed to be good friends or something like this, so now they come together in summer. I think it is good for both of course, but that's all."

Guardiola will bring 'way better football' to Man City

    pepguardiola-cropped_hgz4kjzlb4lw18cjqgtmzpcvf.jpg

Thierry Henry has tipped Manchester City to “play way better football” when Pep Guardiola takes over from Manuel Pellegrini in the summer.

Pellegrini revealed on Monday that he will leave the club at the end of the season, despite only extending his contract last year. City then released a statement confirming that Bayern Munich boss Guardiola would take over when the Chilean departs at the end of June.

"When Pep arrives at Man City he is going to come with his clear ideas," Henry, who played under the Catalan coach at Barcelona, told Sky Sports.

"I can assure you that the team is going to play way better football - and that's a statement because they already play some great stuff at times, especially at the Etihad."They will play better under him and he will come and some [players] will have to leave.

"Trust me, when he arrived at Barcelona he did the same thing, he wanted some players out, he did the same thing at Bayern Munich and I think he's going to do the same thing with Manchester [City]."

City have had domestic success during the last five years, winning two Premier League titles under Roberto Mancini and more recently Pellegrini.

However, they’ve stumbled in Europe to date, something former Arsenal star Henry expects to change now. "If they don't win the Champions League this year, I think in the three years [with Guardiola] they will be very close to winning it," he added.

"There is one thing you can be sure of, he wants to dominate, and every time people associate his teams with the amount of goals that he scores, but his teams also don't concede a lot, and that's not mentioned a lot."He always wants to be on the front foot, having the ball, possession, as we know, and he wants to dominate, so well done, Manchester City."

"Now I would like to know who is he going to want to kick out, and bring [in]. Then we can have a better view of that."

'There's no offer on the table' - Torres expecting Atletico exit

    fernando-torres-malaga-atletico-madrid-la-liga-20122015_1u7leoopt44cm111og8rx6m83y.jpg

Fernando Torres has admitted he expects to leave Atletico Madrid in the summer with Diego Simeone's side having failed to offer the striker a contract.

Goal understands Atleti have opted against signing the striker on a permanent deal when his 18-month loan deal from AC Milan expires at the end of the season.Torres' return to Atletico has been a disappointment with the former Liverpool and Chelsea striker managing just eight goals in 50 appearances in all competitions.

The 31-year-old admits he has discussed his future with Simeone and is not optimistic about remaining at the Vicente Calderon."What we talked about was personal and that's the way I’d like to keep it," he told reporters at a sponsorship event in Madrid.

"The transfer window closes tonight and there's no offer on the table. But there's always the summer. I've never hidden my desires but it's not up to me. I know my job is to score goals and that's what all us forwards have to do.

"We have a professional relationship and have admiration for each other. I'm eternally grateful to him for giving me the opportunity to come back to Atletico. He knows that I give it my all to play every match, that's what I train for. Simeone is extremely important to this club and my admiration for him will continue to be the same."Torres also insisted the lack of a new deal will not affect his motivation for the rest of the season under Simeone.

"There are no hard feelings. I’m 31-years-old, I'm not a child anymore. I don't take these decisions personally," he added.

"This is the time for unity, there's no need to focus on anything else. Things go better when the fans, the technical staff and the team are united. No-one comes before Atletico Madrid, that is what matters most."Torres joined Atletico as an 11-year-old and captained the club at 19, before leaving for Liverpool in 2007. He insists Simeone's decision does not alter his affection for the club.

"It doesn't change a thing. Since returning my goal has always been to win with Atleti and that's still the case regardless of the situation. I'm taking it one game at a time to accomplish what I set out to do," he added.

"I'm taking things one day at a time and am delighted to be playing for the team I love. I'm sad not to be on the pitch with my team-mates obviously, but I'm taking things as they are. My only wish is to get back into the starting line-up, play and savour every game I have in this jersey."

OFFICIAL: Arsenal's Mathieu Debuchy joins Bordeaux on loan

    2367842_heroa.jpg

Bordeaux have confirmed that they have signed Arsenal right-back Mathieu Debuchy on loan until the end of the season.

Unable to break into the Gunners' starting XI, the defender had previously indicated his desire to move away from the Emirates Stadium temporarily to allow him to chase his dream of playing Euro 2016 in his homeland.

Debuchy, who joined Arsenal from Newcastle in the summer of 2014, had made a positive start to his Arsenal career before two serious shoulder injuries presented Hector Bellerin with an opportunity which he has seized with both hands.

The 30-year-old has not featured for Arsenal since November's Champions League win over Dynamo Zagreb and had been a target for a number of Premier League strugglers including Sunderland and Aston Villa.

The former Lille fullback had been France's first choice right-back at the 2014 World Cup but faces stiff competition from the likes of Bacary Sagna and Lucas Digne to ensure he is part of Didier Deschamps' Euro 2016 squad.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger had previously appeared reluctant to let Debuchy leave this winter but may have softened his stance after Calum Chambers' impressive display in Saturday's 2-1 win over Burnley in the fourth round of the FA Cup.

Official: Manchester United loan Powell to Hull

    nickpowell-cropped_125nb6nkuklpv18y7cb1frrmrc.jpg

Nick Powell has joined Hull City on loan for the rest of the season after failing to break into Louis van Gaal's first-team plans at Manchester United.

Powell has made only nine appearances for the Red Devils since signing from Crewe Alexandre in 2012, spending time on loan at Wigan Athletic and Leicester City.He has played in only two competitive games this season, coming off the bench in the defeats against Wolfsburg and Bournemouth.

Powell did enjoy success in the Championship during the 2013-14 campaign, however, scoring 12 goals in all competitions for Wigan Athletic.

Hull have also completed the deadline-day signing of Slovakian goalkeeper Dusan Kuciak, who moves to Humberside on an 18-month deal from Legia Warsaw.

Official: Everton complete £13.5m Niasse swoop

    2610442_heroa.jpg

Everton have confirmed that they have completed the signing of Oumar Niasse for a fee of £13.5 million from Lokomotiv Moscow.

The 25-year-old, who has 13 goals and 10 assists already this season, has signed a four-and-a-half year deal at Goodison Park.

The move comes too late for Niasse to feature against Newcastle on Wednesday but he is expected to be eligible to face Stoke City on Saturday.

"It’s a great day for me, a big dream to play in the Premier League and a big dream to play for Everton," he told the club's official website.

"Everton is one of the best teams in the Premier League and the Premier League is one of the best leagues in the world.

"I know Everton is one of the big clubs here in England with history, the fans and the great players, so I’m very excited and happy to be here.
"I started to watch Everton more since the beginning of October because I had heard about their interest.

"I was interested to see how they play and how they have good young players. If you see players who are aged 20 or 21 and see them perform like that, you know you have a good coach.

"The manager has said exactly what he wants. He believes I can be a player who can add something to the team. It was not difficult to talk and understand one another. You can see also that he is a good person and I am really looking forward to playing for my new team."
