Chelsea reveal Pato's new shirt number

    2622232_heroa.jpg

Chelsea have confirmed that Alexandre Pato will be given the No.11 shirt, while fellow January signing Matt Miazga will wear No.20.

Pato has joined on loan from Corinthians until the end of the season and is building up his fitness ahead of a potential debut against Watford on Wednesday evening.

Pato takes No.11 which has been left vacant since Didier Drogba's exit last summer.

Miazga, meanwhile, was a surprise acquisition from New York Red Bulls after impressing in Major League Soccer last year.

The 20-year-old could also be named in the matchday squad to face Watford.

Neymar will not join Real Madrid - Ronaldinho

    neymar-barcelona-athletic-bilbao-la-liga-17012016_q6ojdf1bvnzp13hv6rfr4cjtx.jpg

Ronaldinho is confident Neymar will not leave Barcelona to join Real Madrid and has backed his compatriot to become the best player in the world.

Neymar has been linked by some with a switch to the Santiago Bernabeu in recent weeks following claims he met with a Madrid delegation in Zurich ahead of the Fifa Ballon d'Or ceremony last month.

The 23-year-old's representatives denied such a meeting took place, while Neymar criticised a journalist who reported he met with Madrid officials.

That has not put an end to speculation he could follow in the footsteps of Luis Figo and controversially leave Barcelona for the Spanish capital, though, and Zinedine Zidane and Sergio Ramos both had their say on the matter last week, with the latter suggesting he would welcome Neymar with open arms.

However, Ronaldinho feels a transfer is very unlikely."I don't think Neymar will join Real Madrid," he told El Mundo Deportivo. "I hope he will become the best player in the world. He is hugely talented and plays for the best club in the world."I think he has what it takes to become the best."

Neymar has a contract with Barcelona until June 2018, but head coach Luis Enrique last week stated he is confident the Brazil international will agree to extend his deal.

Real Madrid confirm Pepe foot injury

    pepe-cropped_tj1g3ho0gz261etkj677b8d3m.jpg

Zinedine Zidane may have to make do without the services of Real Madrid defender Pepe, who is suffering discomfort in his foot, for Sunday's trip to Granada.

Pepe has not trained with Madrid's first team since last week and was omitted from Zidane's squad for Sunday's home fixture with Espanyol.

Pepe's absence facilitated captain Sergio Ramos' return to the XI for the 6-0 thrashing, with the Spaniard likely to continue alongside Raphael Varane when Madrid travel to Granada on Sunday.

A club statement read: "After new tests carried out today on the player Pepe at the Sanitas La Moraleja University Hospital, the Real Madrid medical services have decide to continue the recovery work on the plantar fascia discomfort in his right foot over the coming days. "His recovery will continue to be assessed."

Robben hits out at Bayern 'mole'

    arjenrobben-cropped_f608x9p5c90g17xp72twsjxdo.jpg

Arjen Robben has hit out at an apparent 'mole' in the Bayern Munich dressing room amid speculation that Pep Guardiola's relationship with his squad has turned sour.

Last month, reports suggested that a number of key players at Bayern have had enough of Guardiola's strict approach, with the Spaniard's announcement that he is to leave the club at the end of the season also thought to have affected squad harmony.Guardiola has denied such speculation, and forward Robben is unhappy with the leak.

"The player who has been leaking information to the press should take a good look at himself in the mirror," Robben was quoted as saying by Sport1. "This is all rather painful. This has happened three or four times now since I joined Bayern.

"When you are a professional, you simply don't do things like that. But I also played for Chelsea and Madrid and unfortunately stuff like this happens everywhere."

'Guardiola could sell Toure, Zabaleta and Nasri'

    pablozabaleta-cropped_rjurgkmepgn21unbl5le5opoh.jpg

Former Manchester City winger Trevor Sinclair believes Pep Guardiola will sell Yaya Toure, Pablo Zabaleta and Samir Nasri once he becomes the club's new manager.

Current City boss Manuel Pellegrini announced he would leave at the end of the season on Monday, with the club quickly confirming outgoing Bayern Munich coach Guardiola would begin a three-year contract from 2016-17.

Toure played under Guardiola at Barcelona, during which time he lost his regular starting place to Sergio Busquets before signing for City in 2010.

The midfielder's outspoken agent Dimitri Seluk responded to Guardiola's appointment by predicting Toure will seek pastures new, but ex-England international Sinclair does not think he will be the only victim.

Right-back Zabaleta joined City in 2008 and established himself as both a cult hero on the terraces through his all-action displayed and a key performer in the club's 2011-12 and 2013-14 Premier League title triumph.

But Sinclair, who represented his hometown club between 2003 and 2007, feels the 31-year-old could be surplus to requirements along with playmaker Samir Nasri as Guardiola seeks to implement his trademark dynamic playing style.

"Yaya is the obvious one, Nasri you would expect him to be moving on," he told Omnisport.

"Some of the older players – Zabaleta has been an absolutely brilliant player for Manchester City, as Yaya has.

"Zabaleta, he's actually got an important part to play towards the end of this season.

"For a lot of fans here at Manchester City, he's really in their hearts and he's been an incredible servant to the club.

"He's been so successful at the club but I think he might be one of the casualties."

Should Guardiola seek to bring in players from his former clubs, Sinclair earmarked Bayern defender David Alaba as a man who could improve what has often been a flimsy backline for City this season.

"You think about players like Alaba, who could come in and bring that extra bit of zest and youthfulness to the defence," he added.

Neville: No mistake signing Cheryshev & Siqueira

    gary-neville_1g81x2ah20mz71jslhqmg31rvv.jpg

Gary Neville denied there being an oversight in Valencia's signing of Denis Cheryshev and Guilherme Siqueira, despite only one being eligible for their Europa League campaign.

Valencia finished third behind Zenit and Genk in their Champions League group and will subsequently feature in Europe's second-tier competition, where Rapid Vienna await in the round of 32.

In the final two days of the previous transfer window, the club signed Siqueira from Atletico Madrid and loaned Cheryshev from Real Madrid until the end of the season. However, only one of the duo is eligible to represent Valencia in the Europa League having already featured in Champions League action this season at their previous clubs, but Neville insists the club were aware of the situation.

"It's not my decision, it's not the decision of Valencia, it's a regulation that's set by Uefa and we have to select one," the 40-year-old coach said.

"It's not about choosing one or the other. I've made my decision and I've spoken with the player involved, it's not a secret."We need both players because were in Copa, Europa League and obviously we've still a lot of La Liga matches still to play.

"It could be that you want to make a negative situation of the fact that I've had to select one player of the two but it's purely a regulation of Uefa and it's not a mistake of the club.

"We were fully aware of the situation that if we signed these two players this could happen. It's a situation that all players will get football in this period of time but I agree it's disappointing to have to make selections like this."

'Guardiola will have HUGE impact on English football'

    the-story-of-pep-guardiola-to-manchester-city_1id0k756qdbvp189axrh5xosst.jpg

Everton manager Roberto Martinez believes Pep Guardiola 's arrival at Manchester City will have a significant tactical impact on the British game.

City confirmed on Monday that Manuel Pellegrini would leave the club at the end of the season, with the Bayern Munich head coach coming in as his replacement.

Guardiola revolutionised the game with the implementation of his 'tiki-taka' style of play at Barcelona, who won La Liga three times and the Champions League twice under his stewardship.

In his time at Bayern, Guardiola has steered the German side to two Bundesliga titles, the DFB-Pokal and the Club World Cup and Martinez is looking forward to the impact the fellow Catalan will have in England.

Martinez told reporters: "Pep Guardiola is one of the best managers in world football, I don't think we are discovering anything by saying that. I think it's going to be fantastic for the league.

"He's going to bring a very successful football philosophy, without a doubt it will affect a lot of young coaches and managers in the country and bring a completely different tactical approach in the British game.

"He's Catalan, so of course I should know exactly what he is as a person, as a winner. He's got an attention to detail very, very difficult to find in another manager."

Leicester City 2-0 Liverpool: Vardy scores stunner as Foxes put Reds to the sword

    2624882_heroa.jpg

Jamie Vardy scored two goals - including a contender for goal of the season - to fire Leicester City to an impressive 2-0 win over Liverpool.

The striker's first effort was a stunning dipping volley on 60 minutes and his second, 10 minutes later, sealed a win that continues the Foxes' shock bid for the Premier League title.

Leicester are three points clear of second placed Manchester City - who beat Sunderland 1-0 on Tuesday night - and face Manuel Pellegrini's side at the Etihad this weekend.Liverpool, meanwhile, have now only won one of their last five games in the league - conceding 13 in the process - after another disappointing performance.

Leicester made no alterations to their team, while there were eight Liverpool changes from the side that played West Ham in the FA Cup, with captain Jordan Henderson fit to start.

The visitors had most of the first-half possession, but Leicester came so close to scoring on two occasions. First, a swift counter-attack saw Shinji Okazaki find Vardy before getting on the end of the England striker's cross to head powerfully at goal from close-range.

Okazaki seemed certain to score, but Mignolet got down low to make a crucial reflex save, pushing the ball on to the crossbar and out to safety.Mignolet was then at it again, this time to deny Riyad Mahrez after Vardy was tackled by Dejan Lovren.

The ball fell to Mahrez, who did not break his stride before unleashing a stunning, curling first-time effort from 25 yards that was only matched by a magnificent one-handed save from Mignolet to ensure it remained goalless at half-time.

Emre Can arrowed a shot just wide from 12 yards after a neat passing move and Kasper Schmeichel had to react quickly at his near post to keep out Alberto Moreno after the break.

It was a piece of individual brilliance that broke the deadlock on 60 minutes when a hopeful long pass from Mahrez found Vardy's run in a seemingly unthreatening position close towards the right channel outside of the area.Vardy, though, displayed perfect technique to send an outstanding looping half-volley over Mignolet from fully 30 yards.

Okazaki had a penalty claim denied by referee Andre Marriner after he appeared to be brought down by Mamadou Sakho in the box, but the hosts soon got over that when Vardy made it two on 72 minutes.

After Sakho failed to head clear, Okazaki's shot deflected into the path of Vardy, who made no mistake with a convincing left-footed finish to seal another impressive victory for Ranieri's title challengers ahead of a mouthwatering trip to Manchester this weekend.

West Ham 2-0 Aston Villa: Antonio & Kouyate see off 10-man visitors

    2624902_heroa.jpg

West Ham eased past Aston Villa at Upton Park thanks to second half goals from Michail Antonio and Cheikhou Kouyaté with the visitors playing the majority of the game with 10 men.

Villa were a man down after just 17 minutes, Jordan Ayew shown a straight red card for an elbow on Aaron Cresswell.

However, it took the hosts almost an hour to finally break down Remi Garde’s strugglers, Antonio heading home a Mark Noble cross.

The Hammers then ensured all three points late on with Kouyate finishing emphatically after a quick counter attack.

It could have been so different for the visitors, who began the match much the brighter of the two sides.

Winston Reid's last-ditch clearance prevented Micah Richards from tapping home a corner at the back post within four minutes of kick-off.

Referee Jon Moss waved away the visitors' claims for a penalty when Gabriel Agbonlahor's cross struck the arm of Antonio and Villa seemed to have control of the game prior to Ayew's moment of madness just after the quarter-hour mark.

The Ghanaian threw his elbow into Cresswell's face, leaving Moss with no option but to issue the forward with his marching orders.

Despite having an advantage in numbers, the Hammers still struggled to find rhythm in their forward play. Enner Valencia somehow steered James Tomkins' volley over the crossbar from less than six yards out as West Ham's frontline spluttered around in second gear.

Slaven Bilic evidently got in the Hammers' ears during the interval, as the home side emerged with renewed intensity.

Payet flashed a free-kick against Bunn's right-hand post from a narrow angle and Villa's defence groaned under constant West Ham pressure until, with 58 minutes gone, it caved in.

Mark Noble's excellent 40-yard diagonal pass picked out Antonio, who headed beyond Bunn first-time from 12 yards out.

For the remainder of the contest, the hosts looked like scoring on each of their forays forwards, and they eventually added a second with five minutes left.

After clearing their lines from a Villa corner, West Ham burst down the right through Valencia and the striker fed Kouyate to saunter into the box and beat Bunn with ease to wrap up three simple points for Bilic's men.

Arsenal 0-0 Southampton: Forster brilliance sees Gunners slip to fourth

    2624612_heroa.jpg

A towering performance from Fraser Forster in the Southampton goal stymied Arsenal as they could only draw 0-0 and slip to fourth in the Premier League.

After a promising, even first half nevertheless lacking in goalmouth action aside from three spurned chances for Mesut Ozil, the Gunners turned up the pressure after the break and threatened regularly, only to find Forster in their way.

The England international denied Olivier Giroud on multiple occasions as well as former Saint Theo Walcott, while James Ward-Prowse cleared off the line from Alexis Sanchez, all part of an accomplished defensive display from Ronald Koeman's men.

With Manchester City and Tottenham winning elsewhere, Arsenal's failure to break through sees them drop below their north London rivals on goal difference and five points adrift of leaders Leicester City, while Saints climb to seventh.

A sublime piece of skill from Ozil in the 12th minute nearly lit the blue touch-paper after a tight start, the German plucked a Sanchez pass out of the air only to see Forster save with his feet.

Southampton – who were without January signing Charlie Austin through injury – quickly registered their first chance less than a minute later, Sadio Mane unable to beat Petr Cech at his near post from Shane Long's flick.

Ozil was presented with another opportunity midway through the half after Giroud had met a Hector Bellerin cross, the midfielder diverting the ball towards goal but again being denied by Forster.

The visitors finished the half strongly and saw Mane, Tadic and Oriol Romeu all fail to test Cech from promising positions.

With half-time approaching, a mazy run from Joel Campbell almost lifted the frustration inside the Emirates Stadium but Ozil was again unable to turn the ball home.

Forster was again on hand three minutes after the break to keep the hosts at bay, comfortably pawing away a curling effort from Giroud.

Despite the growing anxiety coming from the home fans, Arsenal continued to create chances but lacked quality in front of goal with Sanchez and Giroud wasteful.

Substitute Walcott was next to have a sight of goal after 67 minutes. However, Forster made an impressive double save to deny the ex-Saints forward.

When Arsenal were finally able to get the ball past the 27-year-old keeper, Ward-Prowse rescued Forster, the midfielder clearing off the line to deny Alexis.

The hosts still needed to be alert at the back as the pace of Mane caused problems but Southampton were equally as profligate in front of goal, Koeman's side grateful to one final save from Forster to leave Arsenal with one point from the sides' two league meetings this season.

Norwich City 0-3 Tottenham: Spurs win again to leapfrog Arsenal

    2624282_heroa.jpg

Tottenham moved above Arsenal into third place in the Premier League as a brace from Harry Kane and one from Dele Alli clinched a 3-0 victory away at struggling Norwich City.

As his fine breakthrough season continued, Alli opened the scoring after just two minutes at Carrow Road when he converted a rebound, while he also played a part in his side's second goal.

The midfielder was fouled in the area by former Tottenham defender Sebastien Bassong, offering the chance for Kane to double the advantage from the penalty spot on the half-hour mark.

Kane struck the woodwork in either half, but he was not to be denied a second as he swept home a confident finish in the final minute as Spurs went above their north London rivals, who drew 0-0 at home to Southampton.

Norwich, who had a goal disallowed in the second half, have now recorded just one win in all competitions in 2016 so far. They will drop into the bottom three if Newcastle United record a win at Everton on Wednesday.

Tottenham, in contrast, are only looking up. They have still not lost away from home in the league since the opening day of a season that sees them still fighting for honours on three fronts at the start of February.

Spurs did not need long to take the lead. Although goalkeeper Declan Rudd did well to turn away Christian Eriksen's low shot, Alli was on hand to tap home the loose ball and score his fifth goal in his side's last six league games away from White Hart Lane.

When he was the quickest to react to Kane's saved shot, Alli looked a certainty to double both his and Tottenham's tally. But, after taking a touch to set up a shooting opportunity, the England international was clipped by Bassong.
The defender's indiscretion against one of his old teams instead was punished by Kane, who had also scored twice against Norwich on December 26. Only a post denied the striker from matching that feat before the break.

Alli wasted a chance to get himself a second goal when he fluffed his header from Danny Rose's left-wing cross and the midfielder did not appear after the interval, as he was replaced by Nacer Chadli due to illness.

Norwich's only real shot of note in the first half came from Dieumerci Mbokani, but his right-footed effort from just inside the area was easily dealt with by visiting goalkeeper Hugo Lloris.

The home team did have a shout for a penalty of their own before the break, but referee Kevin Friend decided there was nothing wrong with Kevin Wimmer's rather clumsy aerial challenge on Steven Naismith.

An official was again the source of frustration for Norwich early in the second period, as the referee's assistant ruled out a potential goal for offside when Bassong looked to have halved the deficit.

Deprived of an early second-half goal, Norwich never threatened a comeback against the tightest defence in the top flight and Kane rubbed salt in their wounds by scoring Tottenham's third at the death, the England international coolly converting having seen an effort strike the left upright shortly beforehand.

Sunderland 0-1 Manchester City: Aguero keeps up feel-good factor after Guardiola announcement

    2624732_heroa.jpg

Sergio Aguero scored the only goal of the game as Manchester City beat Sunderland 1-0 at the Stadium of Light.

A day after the club announced Pep Guardiola would replace Manuel Pellegrini at the end of the season, the Argentina international struck in the first half, slamming into the top corner from a Jesus Navas cross.

Second-bottom Sunderland responded positively and came close to an equaliser before the interval, but Joe Hart marked his 253rd Premier League appearance for City - a club record alongside Richard Dunne - by denying Jermain Defoe, while Billy Jones hit the post on the rebound. The action dried up after the interval as the match became increasingly physical, until a frantic finish where City held firm amid a Sunderland onslaught.

Pellegrini's side remain three points adrift of leaders Leicester City - 2-0 winners against Liverpool - who they face in a huge clash at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday.

Lamine Kone replaced Wes Brown in the centre of defence and his Sunderland debut almost got off to a terrible start in the fourth minute when he diverted Gael Clichy's cross towards his own goal, but Mannone collected at the near post.

City continued to apply early pressure with slick passing, Aguero shifting away from John O'Shea and sending a swerving 25-yard drive wide.

Aguero made no mistake with his next opportunity when he stabbed Navas' deflected cross beyond Mannone, though he was caught on the calf by Jones in the process.

The goalscorer shook off his knock and returned to the forefront of City's attack but, despite Yaya Toure dictating play from midfield, Sunderland became more adventurous.

Kone narrowly missed out marking his first appearance with a goal when he steered a free header from Jeremain Lens' free-kick wide and Hart was in superb form when called upon on the stroke of half-time.

The City goalkeeper got a hand to Jermain Defoe's effort after the striker turned Nicolas Otamendi in the box, before quickly recovering to apply pressure on Jones, whose follow-up from an acute angle cannoned back off the upright.

Pellegrini replaced Iheanacho with Fernando for the second half in a bid to sure up his midfield, while Allardyce introduced Wahbi Khazri for his Premier League bow.Tempers threatened to boil over in the 66th minute when Defoe caught Otamendi with a stray arm, an offence that went unnoticed by referee Stuart Atwell.

Hart produced another great save to deny Jones from 20 yards, while Dame N'Doye's stoppage-time header was cleared off the line by Otamendi after the City goalkeeper failed to claim Khazri's corner.Sunderland's bid for an equaliser was ultimately fruitless, leaving them four points adrift of safety.

:love:Manchester United 3-0 Stoke City: Lingard, Martial & Rooney down Potters

    2624462_heroa.jpg

Manchester United ended their long wait for a first-half goal at home as they eased the pressure on Louis van Gaal with a comfortable 3-0 win over Stoke City on Tuesday.

United, who had not netted in the opening 45 minutes at Old Trafford since a 2-1 Champions League victory over Wolfsburg on September 30, got back to winning ways in the league in fine style.

Van Gaal's men responded to their home defeat to Southampton with a 3-1 win at Derby County in the FA Cup and carried the momentum into the visit of Stoke - whose recent disappointing form continued.

Stoke won the reverse fixture on Boxing Day 2-0, but this encounter represented a complete sea change from the one at the Britannia Stadium, with Jesse Lingard needing just 14 minutes to head United in front.

Nine minutes later United were 2-0 up thanks to Anthony Martial's superb finish and there proved to be no way back for a Stoke side that has won only one of their last five league matches.

Skipper Wayne Rooney put the game beyond doubt with a simple strike in the 53rd minute as United shook off their boring tag to boost hopes they can finish in the top four.

United started brightly and finally broke their first-half duck courtesy of Lingard, who capitalised on sloppy Stoke defending to turn home Cameron Borthwick-Jackson's low-left wing cross with a diving header.

Martial wasted a decent opportunity to double the lead by shooting into the side-netting but quickly atoned for that miss in stunning fashion as he finished off a wonderfully-worked attacking move, collecting a magnificent cross-field ball from Rooney and curling into the top-right corner.

Stoke's cause was dealt a further blow after half-an-hour when Philipp Wollscheid was withdrawn due to injury and replaced by Phil Bardsley.

The visitors almost pulled one back four minutes later when Jonathan Walters shot narrowly over from close-range as United failed to deal with a corner.
However, Stoke were fortunate not to fall 3-0 behind as Juan Mata spurned a glorious chance, heading a cross from Matteo Darmian - in as one of two changes made by Van Gaal - off target with the goal at his mercy.

United looked to have made it 3-0 five minutes into the second half when Rooney fired past Jack Butland, but the England captain was ruled to have shoved Glen Johnson off the ball as he attempted to latch on to Martial's pass.

But the boos that greeted referee Roger East's decision soon turned to further United cheers.

Daley Blind split the Stoke midfield with an excellent ball for Mata, who fed it through to Martial on the left, with the former Monaco man then squaring for Rooney to tap in his 99th Premier League goal at OId Trafford.

The hosts were unable to add any further gloss to the scoreline but Marouane Fellaini's late substitution through injury proved the only blot on an impressive performance, which should earn Van Gaal some respite from his more vocal critics.

:cool:Glory, glory Man Utd! Van Gaal finally delivers Old Trafford masterclass

    2625142_heroa.jpg

After a performance of vintage Manchester United quality packed with pace, power, energy, urgency and splendid silky football, the only question one can ask is why it took so long for them to turn in such a display. This was exactly what Old Trafford has been waiting for.

Louis van Gaal’s side turned in their best performance of the season and one of the most convincing of the Dutchman’s reign in easily despatching Stoke City at the Theatre of Dreams. It is arguable that they deserved more than a 3-0 scoreline, but after the months of tribulations on their home turf it is a result their fans will not complain about one jot.

This was United's 13th straight win at home against the Potters, but no one was taking anything for granted pre-match after a run of two league wins in two-and-a-half months.

United’s last match in M16 had ended with them booed off after a woeful showing in the 1-0 defeat to Southampton 10 days earlier, but Tuesday’s effort came from the very opposite end of the scale.

On the night the club commemorated the upcoming 58th anniversary of the Munich air tragedy, the display could not have been more fitting a tribute.

You could tell it was going to be United’s night when Jesse Lingard headed home in the 14th minute from Cameron Borthwick-Jackson’s low cross. It was the Reds’ first goal in a first half at Old Trafford since September, a period spanning 520 minutes and more than 11 matches.

Anthony Martial finished superbly soon after, then teed up Wayne Rooney for the third shortly after the break.

United supporters will leave Old Trafford shaking their heads in bewilderment though, with this same group of players having spent much of the season turning in lifeless, one-dimensional performances that have bored crowds to tears. As much as they’ll be delighted to finally see some real entertainment from their side, they have every right to wonder why Van Gaal hasn’t been able to get such dynamic displays out of his men until now.

If the victory over Derby County in the FA Cup on Friday was a small step in the right direction, this win was a healthy stride. Every recovery has to start somewhere, and United remain a long way from the finished article thanks to the rigid efforts of the past six months, but this kind of evening shows that United are still capable of thrilling football when they want to be.

Now their supporters will just hope for more of the same over the final three months of the season and that the stale, robotic football of previous months is now a thing of the past.

Vardy goes full-throttle as Liverpool's attack falters again

It was the league's top scorer inflicting the damage for the league's leaders. Jamie Vardy struck twice as Leicester City beat Liverpool 2-0 to reinforce Jurgen Klopp's belief that the Foxes are "a perfectly-tuned team".

Claudio Ranieri could celebrate a clean sheet coupled with a goal of the season contender as well as a poacher’s effort on Tuesday night. The full package.
For the Reds boss though, defeat served as a reminder of his team’s multiple flaws.

Nervous at the back and tame up front, Liverpool had plenty of the ball against their opponents, but could not match their sharpness in possession. Vardy, Riyad Mahrez and Shinji Okazaki illustrated what a difference it can make when perspiration is matched with inspiration. Klopp's men have much of the former, but have been struggling with the latter which is why they tried to sign the prolific Alex Teixeira from Shakhtar Donetsk in the January window.

Liverpool were aware they needed to buy goals because there is currently not enough in the squad. No-one has hit double figures for the Reds across all competitions this season, with Christian Benteke the highest scorer with seven.

Meanwhile, Leicester don't just have Vardy sitting pretty at the summit of the league's scoring charts, Mahrez is in the top five too. The hosts were confident in their play, while Liverpool were overcomplicated and created more work for themselves with poor decision-making.

Klopp was aware Leicester would stick to their blueprint, and he also knew it would be hugely challenging to get the better of them. He was correct.

"We all know about [Leicester's] quality... their clear idea of their game, their clear style. It's difficult to play against, as most of the teams in the Premier League have felt when they've met them," Klopp said prior to the game.

"The good thing with a clear plan is you know about it, so they won't change a lot - but all the other teams knew about it too and they couldn't avoid their strengths for 95 minutes."

There were 60 minutes on the clock when jaws dropped and Liverpool looked done for. Mahrez delivered a stunning long pass over the top for Vardy and the striker allowed it to drop over his shoulder before smashing a dipping volley in from an angle. Eleven minutes later, he struck again after reacting quickest to a loose ball and it was game over.

Liverpool have managed heroics at the death in two of their previous three games - the shootout win over Stoke in the League Cup to book a spot at Wembley and the 95th-minute goal in the dramatic 5-4 win at Norwich, but they cannot continuously rely on those fightbacks.

The Merseysiders managed just two shots on target against Leicester and had 12 corners to the hosts' three. They had the ball, time, space and opportunities but were completely ineffective.Klopp has previously said: "When you don't score a lot of goals, you firstly have to defend very disciplined.

"If you concede two goals it's not too easy to score three. If you stay concentrated then you will find a moment at the other end with your quality. Some teams have to work harder for one goal than other teams."Liverpool are one of those teams. They have not managed to keep it tight at the back - conceding 13 goals in their last six league away games - and they do not possess enough quality in the final third.

Klopp will hope that the impending return of Philippe Coutinho and Divock Origi will assist the attack, and while Daniel Sturridge is also pencilled in to train this week, Liverpool won't be counting on his clinical edge given his injury problems.

At the King Power Stadium on Tuesday night, Leicester showed why they're the division's pacesetters and they shone a spotlight on all the things Liverpool are lacking, especially up front.
