'Cheryshev is Spanish for Mark Robins!' - Carragher hails Neville's first win

    gary-neville_1g81x2ah20mz71jslhqmg31rvv.jpg

Jamie Carragher joked that Denis Cheryshev saved Gary Neville's managerial career after the winger gave him his first league win in charge of Valencia.

The 25-year-old scored the winner as los Che came from behind to beat Espanyol 2-1 in La Liga and end a winless run of 10 league games.

Neville had gone into the game under huge pressure and Carragher was quick to congratulate his former Premier League rival with a tongue in cheek message on Twitter.

Twenty-six years ago Mark Robins scored the winning goal for Manchester United in an FA Cup third round win over Nottingham Forest in 1990 to ease the pressure on Alex Ferguson.

Prior to the game there had been huge speculation that the former United boss would be fired if the club were knocked out of the competition, only for Robins to come to his rescue.

Valencia boss Neville brings in former Liverpool assistant Ayestaran

    2668842_heroa.jpg

Valencia coach Gary Neville has confirmed former Liverpool assistant Pako Ayestaran will be joining his background staff from Monday.

Neville enjoyed his first Liga win in charge of Valencia on Saturday night as his side came from behind to beat Espanyol 2-1 at Mestalla.

Goals from Alvaro Negredo and Denis Cheryshev gave the hosts all three points after Oscar Duarte had put Espanyol ahead.

Speaking after the match, Neville confirmed that Ayestaran would return to Valencia as assistant coach although he stressed the 53-year-old would not be replacing any of his current staff.

"Pako Ayestaran will join my coaching team on Monday,” he told reporters. “He’s been here before. Not replacing any of current staff, I’m delighted with them."

Ayestaran spent three years at Valencia previously on the coaching staff from 2001-2004 working with Rafael Benitez and helping the club to two league titles and the Uefa Cup.

The pair then worked together at Liverpool, winning the Champions League and FA Cup, before Ayestaran left the Anfield club in August 2007.

Gary Neville relieved after maiden Valencia victory

    gary-neville_mh8doh6j90kl177lhtthsjwfi.jpg

Gary Neville was a relieved man after finally securing his maiden managerial league win on Saturday when Valencia defeated Espanyol 2-1.

Second-half goals from Alvaro Negredo and Denis Cheryshev saw Valencia claim their first victory in La Liga since November. It was Neville's first win in the league in his 10th attempt after taking over from Nuno Espirito Santo at the beginning of December.

And the former England and Manchester United defender could not hide his delight at ending his barren streak, but knows there is still a lot of work left to do to get the club higher up in the table.

"Relief is probably a good word," he said. "It did feel like relief at end. You saw the reaction of the fans and the players - everybody was relieved to get a win under our belt.

"Nine [games without a win] under me, four before I came, it's too many for this club."This is not a night for celebration, to get carried away, it's now important we gain some confidence and take that forward."

Neville also confirmed that Pako Ayestaran, assistant under Rafael Benitez at Valencia, will return to the club's coaching ranks. "Pako Ayestaran will join my coaching team on Monday," Neville revealed.

"I have been thinking about this for a while, speaking to him over last days. We start [training] again on Monday, and he will be with us."

'Manchester United have made no progress whatsoever under Van Gaal'

    louis-van-gaal-manchester-united-premier-league-20160207_5sj1yfvcp47z19lhhaliccfk1.jpg

Former Newcastle United striker Alan Shearer has criticised Louis van Gaal's Manchester United, saying the side have made no significant progress under the Dutchman since he first took over.

Van Gaal was appointed David Moyes' replacement in the summer of 2014, but despite a transfer outlay in the region of £250 million, the club could miss out on Champions League qualification this season.

Saturday's 2-1 defeat to Sunderland means speculation over Van Gaal's future will intensify, with Jose Mourinho being tipped to become United's next boss and Shearer joined the critics questioning the current man in the Old Trafford dugout.

"I don't think Man United are any further forward now to what they were when he [Van Gaal] took over," the 45-year-old told Match of the Day. "I don't see any progression whatsoever despite them spending nearly £250 million.

"What will also be hugely alarming [for Van Gaal] is that there's so many newspaper outlets going on about Mourinho - not one person from the Man United hierarchy has come out and denied that. That must be very worrying."
United next take on Midtjylland in the Europa League round of 32 next Thursday after they bowed out of the Champions League group stages in December.

Wenger: Arsenal want the next Jamie Vardy

    arsene-wenger-arsenal-premier-league-20150102_q778pp49y15e1k1ths9hkng7z.jpg

Arsene Wenger says Arsenal are on the lookout for the next Jamie Vardy after signing scout Ben Wrigglesworth from Leicester City.

Wrigglesworth joined the Gunners backroom staff this week after spending over three years with the Foxes, where he was head of technical scouting.

And Wenger hopes the change will help his team identify hidden gems such as Vardy, who has shone in a meteoric rise to the top of the Premier League with Leicester and will be hoping to impress again against Arsenal when they meet on Sunday.

“We try to get the best people in every department and the Leicester scout was on our list, not just because they are top of the league but because we heard about his quality and we want the best," Wenger said of the signing.

“Yes, of course [we want the next Vardy].“If a scout comes to convince me that this is a player of exceptional quality at that level I will take a gamble. They are out there - stars in non-League football.”

Vardy has risen through the leagues, having played for Stocksbridge Park Steels, Halifax Town and Fleetwood town over five years before he joined Leicester, with whom he won the Championship and is currently the top scorer in the Premier League with 18 goals.

And Wenger feels the long journey to the top has its own reward for a player and feels it gives them a different hunger than those who have spent their entire career at a high level.“The hunger index is sometimes built by the difficulty of realising your dream and are developed by that,” he said.

“I believe that sometimes, when you start at 18 years of age on the red carpet, it can make you think ‘That is normal. That is easy’.

“A player who starts and has been educated at Arsenal starts in the Champions League for the last 20 years. He doesn’t know what it is to fight every week just to make his position in his team and to win the game.

“These kind of players from the lower leagues, once they come up, they have watched on television to Champions League or Premier League and once they are in there, they are ready for a fight."It develops the hunger.”

Klopp: Sturridge one of the most talented players I've ever seen

    liverpool-v-swansea-daniel-sturridge_p8vamf02x5wy1vt1cw49hx013.jpg

Jurgen Klopp says he is delighted with the progress Daniel Sturridge has made as he nears his return to full fitness, hailing the Liverpool striker as one of the best he has ever seen.

Sturridge has struggled immensely with injuries over the last two years and has featured in just five Premier League games this season as a result. The England international featured against West Ham in Liverpool's midweek FA Cup defeat, but has not played in the league since early December.

And Klopp feels the 26-year-old is in good shape and is eager to have him back to his best as he will boost the team's attack.

"The statistics are not interesting any more. At this moment, he is in training and has featured in one of the last two games. That's 50 per cent, that's not bad," Klopp joked."The plan was for him to play 40 minutes against West Ham and in the end it was 70 with extra time.

"He did recovery the next day but he's still in good shape and in a good way. That's a good thing. Football looks so easy when he plays."For Daniel, football is what cycling is like for the rest of us. He doesn't forget how to do it and he never will.

“It’s really normal that everybody is asking about Daniel. He is one of the most talented players I have ever seen, for sure. And he was unavailable, so everybody was waiting. If nobody was waiting, then he wouldn’t have quality. That’s how it is.

"Hopefully we can work for a few weeks and he will be available for us. It would be really silly if we always make a shadow on the present by thinking about the past.

"Hopefully at the end of the season England coach Roy Hodgson will have a decision to make because that means Daniel is fit and playing for us.

"We have a lot of games to go and we have to manage the minutes. We need to see if we can increase the physical shape of the players, especially the players who haven't been involved in normal training the last few weeks, and use them as often as possible."

Hiddink not hopeful Terry will face PSG

Chelsea manager Guus Hiddink is not optimistic over John Terry's prospects of facing Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League on Tuesday.

Hiddink watched his captain limp off before half-time in the dominant 5-1 Premier League victory over Newcastle United on Saturday, with the centre-back to have his injury assessed further on Sunday

But his boss believes the close proximity of matches makes it doubtful Terry may be ready in time for the first leg of the last-16 clash at the Parc des Princes.
"He has, hopefully, a small muscular problem," Hiddink told Sky Sports."Tomorrow we will know how serious it is.

"Midweek is already Tuesday and we have just two days to recover. I think teams need at least three days, but we don't have."We will see what will be the outcome tomorrow."

At the start of a week of crunch cup ties - Chelsea host Manchester City in the fifth round of the FA Cup next Sunday - the Stamford Bridge club were in rampant mood.Goals from Diego Costa, Pedro and Willian put them 3-0 up inside 17 minutes against a Newcastle team that dropped into the Premier League relegation zone.

Pedro added a second before Costa's replacement Bertrand Traore completed Chelsea's scoring during a more sedate second period.

And Hiddink was pleased to see an explosive start give his team the chance to leave something in reserve for a season-defining week."I think we had a kick-start," he added. "We tried to press from the first minute to surprise them and I think we did.

"We had an early goal and the second goal made them very unstable."Everyone is talking about the Tuesday game and normally you start a little bit slow.

"If you take advantage during the early stage of the game then you get some rest in your team in the later period of the game."

Van Gaal: I've had no contact with Mourinho

    mourinhovangaal-cropped_dunjj0fr4psq14jt123f9qqgk.jpg

Louis van Gaal says he has had no contact with Jose Mourinho amid rumours the Portuguese coach could be set to replace him at Manchester United.

United suffered a 2-1 defeat against relegation-threatened Sunderland on Saturday and missed the opportunity to close the gap on top-four clubs Manchester City, Tottenham, Arsena; and Leicester City, all of whom play on Sunday.

Their fading hopes of securing Champions League football have led to suggestions the club hierarchy has entered talks with Mourinho but Van Gaal said he would not reach out to the man who worked under him at Barcelona.

"I wouldn’t expect Jose Mourinho to call me about that," Van Gaal told reporters. "No. In the football world that doesn’t happen. Nor will I ring him."If I did, then you think the stories are right and it is not like that. I am not thinking like that."

Van Gaal said before the Sunderland game that he would expect United to inform him if they were talking to other managers, such was his relationship with executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward, but appeared to backtrack on that claim after the defeat at the Stadium of Light.

"In the past, I was chairman of the coaches federation in the Netherlands and we had a rule that you can never talk with a club without informing the present manager," he said.

"But in football it’s not usual that you speak with other managers like that. It wasn’t a good rule, no!"Sometimes it has been broken by people and by managers. It is always like that. It is not always an honest world."

Van Gaal confident Schweinsteiger will get back to his best

    bastian-schweinsteiger_1pmpy31wrd7qg19ijscwjlg7iv.jpg

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal is confident Bastian Schweinsteiger will get back to his best sooner rather than later.

The Germany captain joined United from Bayern Munich at the start of the season, but has been unable to make much of an impact at Old Trafford thus far.

Schweinsteiger has not featured since the FA Cup win over Sheffield United on January 9 due to injury, but Van Gaal is adamant the midfielder should not be written off just yet."Bastian has been unlucky because he picked up an injury at a time that he was playing very well, he was improving," Van Gaal told the official United website.

"However, during December I said that I expect more and he was very disappointed I said that, but I think I can say that because my expectation is higher.

"Manchester United bought him even though he is now 31, so I had to convince the board to buy him, because he's a very good player and he always gives a team more balance.

"He played very well against Wolfsburg and then began to reach the level he showed at Munich – I think he can get back to it."

Moyes: We thought we'd signed Fabregas for Manchester United

    2554632_heroa.jpg

David Moyes has revealed he was convinced Cesc Fabregas was going to sign for Manchester United during his time in charge of the Old Trafford club.

The Scot replaced Sir Alex Ferguson in 2013 following his retirement but was sacked by the club after just 10 months in charge, following a disappointing campaign.

Moyes admits the Red Devils attempted to land the Spain international in the summer of 2013 only for the midfielder to opt to remain at Barcelona before moving to Chelsea the following year.

"We thought we were taking him to Manchester United," he told Sky Sports’ 'Goals on Sunday'.

"We spoke to him at the time, but unfortunately it didn't happen.

"Manchester United are always in for the top players, we were in for the top players at the time. They were in for the top players recently and they will be in for them again."

Louis van Gaal replaced Moyes in the hotseat and the Scot believes the Dutchman was the right man to take the job, despite another season of under-achievement at Old Trafford.

"There's so much media attention on Manchester United and Louis van Gaal, and when I lost my job he was lauded by everyone in football. Now many are now saying he’s the one who should lose his job," he added.

"When you go to Manchester United this is what you get. I still believe he was the right person to take the job, I’ve got no hard feelings about it."

Milan 2-1 Genoa: Impressive Honda secures win

    keisuke-honda-milan-vs-genoa3_1f5agdq3hrrou11nfh2av4yl2b.jpg

Goals from Carlos Bacca and Keisuke Honda led AC Milan to a 2-1 win over Genoa at San Siro on Sunday to keep their Champions League ambitions alive.

Milan have hit a strong run of recent form to put themselves in the picture for a top-three finish, and Bacca got them off to the ideal start by firing in the fifth minute after neat work from Honda.

Sinisa Mihajlovic's side were in control throughout, and made sure of the points shortly after the hour, courtesy of a superb long-range strike from Honda.

Genoa failed to really cause Milan any problems, although former Milan loanee Alessio Cerci did grab an injury-time consolation.

Milan could have added a third through Giacomo Bonaventura or Riccardo Montolivo, but will be more than happy with an assured performance that makes it seven Serie A games undefeated.

The hosts sit just four points adrift of third-placed Roma, while Genoa remain three points above the drop zone.

Honda nearly gave Milan the lead after just four minutes with a stunning long-range strike that seemed destined to find the top corner, but Mattia Perin pulled off an excellent save.

Yet the hosts scored just 60 seconds later when Bacca notched his 13th league goal of the season, M'Baye Niang flicked on Honda's cross, and the Colombian finished well beyond Perin.

Bonaventura got on the end of Mattia De Sciglio's cross midway through the half, but his header lacked the power and accuracy to worry Perin.

Bacca could have doubled Milan's lead at the half-hour mark after a clever throughball from Luca Antonelli, but Perin did well to rush off his line and make a vital interception.

Former Milan forward Suso got a chance to level the scoring after a quick Genoa counter-attack, but he hesitated just too long and eventually saw his shot deflect wide off Alessio Romagnoli.

Mihajlovic's men caused Genoa plenty of problems from set-pieces and Romagnoli nearly made it two after a corner from Bonaventura, only to place his header just wide.

But Honda eventually doubled Milan's lead in the 64th minute, as the 29-year-old unleashed a powerful low shot from 25 yards out that left Perin without a chance.

Montolivo then rattled the upright as Milan searched for more goals, before Jeremy Menez made his long-awaited return from injury off the bench.

Cerci marked his return to San Siro with a late consolation for Genoa, but Milan's resurgence continues.

Arsenal 2-1 Leicester: Welbeck ignites Gunners' title hopes

    2687882_heroa.jpg

Danny Welbeck's last-gasp winner saw Arsenal come from behind to defeat 10-man Leicester City 2-1 at Emirates Stadium, moving them to within two points of the leaders in the Premier League title race.

Jamie Vardy won and converted a penalty on the stroke of half-time, but Danny Simpson was sent off for a second booking early in the second half in an incident that changed the game.

The Gunners capitalised when substitute Theo Walcott equalised with 20 minutes remaining and sealed a dramatic victory through the returning Welbeck – off the bench to make his first appearance since April – as he headed home in the fifth minute of stoppage time.

Leicester's defeat is only their third of the league campaign, while Arsenal's second straight victory puts them within striking distance of the top of the table ahead of the meeting between title rivals Manchester City and Tottenham.

Arsenal had a half-hearted penalty claim turn down after Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain's cross struck the arm of N'Golo Kante from close range, but it was the visitors – unchanged for the sixth straight game – who created the first major opportunity.

Marc Albrighton delivered a threatening cross from the right channel and Vardy got up at the back post to head towards the bottom corner, but Petr Cech reacted superbly to get down and save.

Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud was correctly denied by an offside flag after heading in Mesut Ozil's inviting cross, while Cech clawed away a curling attempt from Kante that was swerving dangerously towards the top corner in an end-to-end encounter.

Leicester made the breakthrough in the last minute of the first half when a trademark counter-attack led to Vardy being clumsily brought down by Nacho Monreal in the corner of the box.Vardy took the penalty himself and hammered his attempt into the bottom-right corner, sending Cech the wrong way.

Arsenal, already without the injured Gabriel, had to replace Laurent Koscielny at half-time as Calum Chambers came on and they were relieved to see the visitors have a penalty claim turned down when Riyad Mahrez went down under pressure from Monreal.

The game took a crucial turn in the 54th minute when Simpson was shown a second yellow card for tugging back Giroud, just five minutes after fouling Alexis Sanchez to pick up his initial booking – the first time Leicester had been reduced to 10 men in the league this season.

It was Arsenal's first shot on target that gave them the equaliser. Hector Bellerin's cross from the right was cleverly headed on by Giroud and Walcott beat Kasper Schmeichel with a cool finish nine minutes after coming on.

Danny Drinkwater was fortunate not to be penalised for a high challenge on Aaron Ramsey a few moments later, before Welbeck made his comeback from the substitutes' bench.

Arsenal pressed hard for a late winner, with Per Mertesacker heading inches wide and Giroud being thwarted by an excellent reflex save from Schmeichel. And the breakthrough arrived when Ozil's perfectly flighted free-kick was coverted by Welbeck, sending the home crowd wild.

Ranieri: Leicester would have beaten Arsenal but for Simpson's red card

    2687652_heroa.jpg

Leicester City manager Claudio Ranieri believes his side would have beaten Arsenal had they not been reduced to 10-men following the dismissal of Danny Simpson.

The Foxes took the lead on the stroke of half time after Jamie Vardy won and converted a penalty, but a second bookable offence for Simpson - fouling Olivier Giroud - changed the game.

Marcin Wasilewski was then punished for conceding a free-kick against Nacho Monreal in stoppage time, as Danny Welbeck converted Mesut Ozil's delivery in his first appearance since April 2015.

And Ranieri feels his side threw away the three points after costly individual errors saw them slip to a 2-1 defeat in a vital fixture in the race for the Premier League title.

He told reporters: "Fantastic match, very fast. 11 versus 11 I think we win. Both yellows for Simpson were fouls, but not yellows. Why send him off?

"Arsenal are a fantastic team, but we were in control. They were smarter than us for the winning goal.

"We played to win and played well. We lost, so well done to our opponents. We're still top. We're focused on Norwich."

The Gunners are now just two points behind league-leaders Leicester in the race for the title with 12 games to play.

Welbeck: Scoring Arsenal's winner was a beautiful feeling

    danny-welbeck-arsenal-v-leiceste_x1xk6sc7iqz51peca038ahgit.jpg

Arsenal striker Danny Welbeck says scoring the winner against Leicester gave him a "beautiful feeling" as the Gunners ran out 2-1 winners at the Emirates.

Welbeck made his first appearance since April when he replaced Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain late on at Emirates Stadium and he marked the occasion with a headed goal five minutes into stoppage time.

It moved Arsene Wenger's men, who had to come from 1-0 down, to within two points of the leaders and Welbeck was delighted with the outcome against a Leicester side who had Danny Simpson sent off."It's important, but the most important thing was to get the three points, get the win and close the gap at the top," he told Sky Sports of his last-gasp goal.

"It has been a roller-coaster for me, a difficult moment, and my family and friends know what I have been through. It's a beautiful feeling.

"It's only one goal. I want to be out there playing minutes and staying fit."
Theo Walcott had cancelled out Jamie Vardy's penalty and the former Southampton forward hopes the result proves to be a turning point.

"This man hasn't played for nine months and to get into the mix like that...special players come into the big games," he said. "That could be massive."

Aston Villa 0-6 Liverpool: Reds relentless after Sturridge opens the floodgates

    2688302_heroa.jpg

Daniel Sturridge marked his return to the Liverpool starting line-up with the opening goal as Jurgen Klopp's side thrashed hapless Aston Villa 6-0 at Villa Park.

Remi Garde warned before Sunday's game that his team would have "no chance" if they did not improve upon their performance in last week's win over Norwich City, and the game was put beyond their reach in the first half as Sturridge - for the fifth time in four league games for Liverpool against Villa - and James Milner found the net.

Emre Can's fine low finish made it 3-0 early in the second half before Divock Origi and Nathaniel Clyne scored one each inside a ruthless five-minute spell in which Villa's resistance completely collapsed.

Kolo Toure's header made it six for the visitors to inflict a worst-ever home Premier League defeat on a Villa side who remain eight points from safety, while Liverpool are now back to within three points of fifth-placed Manchester United.

Sturridge did not take long to make his mark on his first Premier League start since October. Villa allowed Philippe Coutinho time and space to curl a fine cross towards the far post from the left, and Sturridge ghosted in between Joleon Lescott and Aly Cissokho to head confidently into the bottom corner.

Liverpool made it 2-0 just nine minutes later, as Milner's curling free-kick from the left sailed into the far corner after Mark Bunn had horribly misjudged the flight of the ball.

Bunn reacted well to keep out Alberto Moreno's prod towards the bottom corner and he clawed away a bending effort from Sturridge from just inside the area, as Klopp's team pushed for a third to cement their complete control over proceedings.

Leandro Bacuna called Simon Mignolet into action for the first time with a low effort after cutting in from the right, but Villa were dealt a major blow when they lost Gabriel Agbonlahor to injury shortly before the hour mark.

Liverpool compounded the Villa Park misery just two minutes later as they grabbed their third of the game, Coutinho teeing up Can to drill low past Bunn first time from 20 yards out.

Sturridge made way for Origi in the 62nd minute and the substitute took just 37 seconds to add Liverpool's fourth, racing in behind the high Villa line onto Coutinho's pass before finishing low past Bunn.

Villa's frustrations were beginning to boil over and Ashley Westwood was fortunate not to be sent off for a reckless late challenge on Origi, but it got worse for the home side when Clyne tapped in from six yards after Bunn had saved superbly to deny the full-back's initial effort.

Liverpool added another when Toure nodded Jordan Henderson's corner straight down the middle of the goal and past the motionless Bunn, as Klopp's side became the first to score six at Villa Park in the top flight since Arsenal in 1983.

Scott Sinclair hit the post with a curling shot which drew ironic cheers from the handful of Villa fans who had stayed inside the ground to see out the closing stages, while the buoyant visiting faithful celebrated their best win under Klopp's management.

Manchester City 1-2 Tottenham: Late Eriksen winner boosts Spurs' title tilt

Christian Eriksen's late winner sent Tottenham within two points of the Premier League summit on Sunday, his calm finish earning a 2-1 win over title rivals Manchester Cityat the Etihad Stadium.

Spurs slipped from second thanks to Arsenal's 2-1 win over leaders Leicester City earlier in the day, but Kane's spot-kick, following a questionable handball call against Raheem Sterling, looked to have taken the visitors back above their London rivals.

City – beaten 3-1 by Leicester at the Etihad eight days ago – were level in the 74th minute courtesy of substitute Kelechi Iheanacho shortly after the 19-year-old's introduction from the bench as Manuel Pellegini's men looked to have kept their title hopes alive.

However, it was Eriksen – celebrating his 24th birthday – who had the final say, slotting home Erik Lamela's pass amid lacklustre City defending on captain Vincent Kompany's return from injury.

A second defeat of the season to Spurs, alongside losses against Arsenal and Leicester, looks set to prove costly for the outgoing Pellegrini, who saw David Silva go agonisingly close late on, while Mauricio Pochettino's men have now won five league games on the bounce.

While City called on influential skipper Kompany, Pochettino brought in Kyle Walker and Danny Rose at full-back, with Dele Alli returning to the XI after suffering dizziness in the win against Norwich City.

Son Heung-min was also recalled to the line-up and, after Sergio Aguero turned an awkward effort over the crossbar 10 minutes in, the South Korean was denied an opening goal by an offside flag.

Silva, who shook off an ankle knock to play, saw a dangerous strike deflected wide, while Rose bravely blocked Sterling's volley before the half-hour mark.
Eriksen stung Joe Hart's palms soon after, but neither side could break the deadlock in a closely contested first period.

Aguero almost caught Spurs napping early in the second half when he sent Kolo Toure's blocked cross high over the crossbar from close range before Spurs were given a helping hand in taking the lead.

Sterling was harshly adjudged by referee Mark Clattenburg to have handled Rose's cross, allowing Kane to tuck home the opener eight minutes into the second half amid jeers from an angry Etihad crowd.

The hosts set about restoring parity as Fernandinho headed Silva's corner over the crossbar before Toure rattled the woodwork with a free-kick from just outside the area.

Pellegrini then threw caution to the wind as Iheanacho replaced Fernando after the hour and it took little time for the Nigerian to make an impact with his ninth City goal in all competitions.

The 19-year-old kept a cool head and calmly side-footed Gael Clichy's cross past a helpless Hugo Lloris 16 minutes from time, only for Eriksen to take advantage of sloppy defending from City to settle the contest in Spurs' favour.

Lamela's ball dissected the City defence and birthday boy Eriksen coolly registered the winner, although Spurs were forced to withstand heavy pressure late on as Silva could only shin an effort over the crossbar from point-blank range to compound City's frustration.
