Morata: Lewandowski is world's best striker - his six-pack is incredible

Juventus' forward Alvaro Morata has hailed Bayern Munich star Robert Lewandowski as the world's best striker - adding that he has an "incredible" six-pack. The Poland international has scored 21 goals in 20 Bundesliga appearances this term and has been linked with a move to Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain.

Morata and Lewandowski will go head-to-head next week when they meet at Juventus Stadium for the first-leg of their Champions League last-16 tie and the Spaniard believes his side must be wary of the threat posed by the 27-year-old.
"Lewandowski is the best striker in the world for me," Morata told Sport Bild. "I remember swapping shirts with him, he has an incredible six-pack.

    Thiago dismisses Manchester City rumours

    thiagoalcantara-cropped_fs2xkfm5df3r10k0qx21soqjb.jpg

Bayern Munich midfielder Thiago Alcantara has made it clear he has no intention of leaving the Bundesliga champions for Manchester City.

Reports from England suggested Pep Guardiola is keen to take the Spain international with him to the Etihad Stadium at the end of the season after previously luring the 24-year-old from Barcelona to the Allianz Arena.

Nevertheless, the midfielder, who has a contract until June 2019, insists he is happy with life at Bayern and is not thinking about a transfer.

"There are always a lot of rumours. It's a fact that Guardiola is joining Manchester City and we have to respect that. But there is no truth in the rumours saying I will follow him," Thiago was quoted as saying by Bild.

"I would not have signed a new contract had I wanted to leave the club. I extended my contract for a reason."I am loving life here in Munich. I am enjoying the city and life here in general."

Villarreal 1-0 Napoli: Suarez cracker puts Spaniards in charge

    2711692_heroa.jpg

Villarreal have one foot in the next round of the Europa League after they beat Napoli in dramatic fashion in the first leg of their round of 32 tie.

It was an evenly fought first half with few chances for either side as the two teams took it in turns to dominate possession while the other sat back and defended resolutely.

The nearest that either got to opening the scoring was in the sixth minute when a poor attempted clearance from Pepe Reina could only find Roberto Soldado just outside of the Napoli penalty area, but the veteran goalkeeper did well to dart back into his own box before parrying away the striker’s shot.

The second half started in a similar fashion to the first, but Napoli quickly started to play with more urgency and went on the front foot.

Jose Callejon enjoyed an impressive three-minute period near the hour mark and went close to opening the scoring with two good chances on goal, but both times his close-range strikes flew just wide of the post.

It was then Villarreal’s turn to go on the front, and as Napoli tired they took advantage of the space left behind by the visitors and flew forward on several great counterattacks.

The ineffectual Leo Baptistao was replaced by Cedric Bakambu with just under half an hour left to play and the Congolese striker immediately made an impact as he went close to opening the scoring with a thumping close-range shot.

Villarreal kept flooding forward in search of a goal that, with the game so evenly fought, surely would have resulted in a win, and they were rewarded for their efforts with nine minutes left on the clock.

A high boot from Mirko Valdifiori that caught Samu Castillejo resulted in a free kick for the hosts on the edge of the penalty area, and Denis Suarez made sure that it found the back of the net with a wonderfully struck shot that left Reina with no chance.

From then onwards it was all Napoli as they desperately tried to find a late equaliser, but neither Gonzalo Higuain nor Lorenzo Insigne, both of whom had come on as substitutes, could find a way past Villarreal’s stubborn defence, who held on to secure the victory.

:eek:Midtjylland 2-1 Manchester United: De Gea injury compounds miserable Europa League defeat

    2711512_heroa.jpg

Manchester United slipped to a 2-1 Europa League last-32 defeat to FC Midtjylland on a miserable night for Louis van Gaal who also lost goalkeeper David de Gea to injury.

The visitors’ preparations for the game were disrupted in the warm-up when De Gea limped out of proceedings and was replaced by Sergio Romero who made a handful of fine saves, but was unable to preserve a result.

Starting in place of Wayne Rooney, Memphis Depay snatched the lead for United but they were pegged back before half-time when Pione Sisto's deflected shot flew into the bottom corner.

The Premier League side, who were perhaps fortunate not to see young Donald Love sent off, seemed content to sit back in the closing stages and were punished when Onuachu drilled low past Romero from the edge of the box.

United fans had baulked at £71 tickets before the game, but their ire will likely switch back to Van Gaal's inability to get the best out his team after another sorry show.

Showing no ill-effects of his late call-up to the side, Romero reacted superbly to claw Hansen's header off the line following a corner as Midtjylland looked to exploit their early set-pieces given United's makeshift backline, though Chris Smalling wasted a great chance from a Blind corner which he headed across goal and wide.

Midtjylland keeper Mikkel Andersen made a good save from Memphis's clever free-kick but the hosts were handed a glorious chance to take the lead as Vaclav Kadlec raced down the middle of the pitch with United's defence nowhere to be seen, only to side-foot straight at Romero.

Memphis made the home side pay just two minutes later, hooking the ball in on the turn from inside the area after Lingard's cross had bounced through three defenders at the near post.

But United's lead was short-lived, Sisto drove straight at the heart of the defence and his shot from 18 yards out took a deflection off Smalling on its way past Romero.

United began the second half brightly, with Lingard blazing high and wide after a fine run down the left by Anthony Martial before Juan Mata nodded wide after a good cross from Memphis.

Martial was beginning to cause real problems with his movement and another promising run led to Lingard volleying back off the crossbar as he peeled away at the far post, though United escaped a red card minutes later when Love caught Filip Novak on the shin with a raised boot.

Midtjylland threw on striker Onuachu and he forced Romero into a stunning save high to his left with a powerful header from 12 yards within a minute of coming on.

But the towering striker made United pay late on, poking the ball away from Mata before rolling a low shot into the corner beyond Romero's reach and securing a famous win for the Danish side.

Fiorentina 1-1 Tottenham: Visitors secure valuable away goal

    2710902_heroa.jpg

A deflected strike from Federico Bernardeschi cancelled out Nacer Chadli's first-half penalty as Fiorentina and Tottenham drew 1-1 in the first leg of their last-32 tie in the Europa League.

Tottenham opened the scoring in the 38th minute at the Stadio Artemio Franchi when a foul on Ben Davies offered Chadli – on spot-kick duties with Harry Kane on the bench - the opportunity to score his fifth goal in his last seven games.

However, Mauricio Pochettino's side - showing six changes from the team that triumphed 2-1 at Manchester City on Sunday – were denied an eighth straight win in all competitions by Bernardeschi's fortunate long-range effort that found the net via a flick off Ryan Mason's boot.

Still, a draw on their travels puts Tottenham in pole position to qualify for the next round when they host the return leg at White Hart Lane against the team that knocked them out of Europe at the same stage last season.

A 2-0 defeat in Florence, with goals from Mohamed Salah and Mario Gomez - who have both since left the Serie A club – saw Tottenham defeated 3-1 on aggregate just under a year ago.

Fiorentina, however, had home advantage in the opening leg in the 2015-16 rematch and their hopes of winning the tie were boosted by the absence of the injured Hugo Lloris from Tottenham's goal.

Yet replacement goalkeeper Michel Vorm was barely tested in a cagey first half that only came to life in the closing stages.

Mauro Zarate fired a loose ball wide with his left foot after 32 minutes as Tottenham's defence had failed to initially deal with a right-wing cross from Josip Ilicic.

The miss from the former West Ham forward proved costly, as the visitors broke the deadlock five minutes later.

Left-back Davies' slalom run into the area was halted by Nenad Tomovic, with Chadli sending Ciprian Tatarusanu the wrong way with his penalty. In converting from 12 yards out, the Belgium international became the first player from an English team to score at Fiorentina's home ground in UEFA competition.

Tottenham looked to have doubled their advantage within two minutes of the second half getting under way, only for an offside decision to rule out Son Heung-min's stooping header from a Christian Eriksen free-kick.

Chadli was then denied by a smart low save by Tatarusanu before Fiorentina equalised with the aid of a rather large slice of luck just before the hour.

Bernardeschi tried his luck from outside the area and hit the jackpot, as his left-footed drive clipped Mason's attempted block and looped over Vorm via a deflection off the underside of the crossbar.

Fiorentina should have gone on to claim the lead in the closing minutes, yet Gonzalo Rodriguez failed to get enough contact with a near-post header from a corner when ideally placed to nod home.

Dortmund 2-0 Porto: Reus and Piszczek put BVB in control

    lukas-piszczek-borussia-dortmund-fc-porto-europa-league-08022016_1rufc16h4valo1q3b3v3t22b87.jpg

Marco Reus and Lukasz Piszczek scored the goals as Borussia Dortmund beat Porto 2-0 in the first leg of their round of 32 Europa League tie.

Piszczek put Dortmund ahead from a corner after just five minutes, turning in the rebound after Iker Casillas had saved his first shot.

Dortmund dominated possession and scored a second goal with 20 minutes to go, Bruno Martins Indi deflecting Reus' shot past Casillas. The first competitive meeting between Dortmund and Porto was light on clear-cut chances, with the visitors having only two shots on target in the match.

Dortmund's victory means they will be strong favourites to progress to the last 16 when the second leg is held at the Estadio do Dragao next week.

Porto's three-time Champions League-winning goalkeeper Casillas made his first ever appearance in the Europa League, while Thomas Tuchel made four changes to the side that beat Hannover 1-0 at the weekend, with star striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang returning from injury.

Aubameyang almost enjoyed the perfect start to his comeback after just three minutes when Reus slid a low cross into his path, but Martins Indi got there first to clear over the crossbar. Both teams had failed to score in their last two European matches but Dortmund would not be denied for long, with Piszczek opening the scoring early on.

The hosts took a short corner to Henrikh Mkhitaryan and, while Casillas saved the unmarked Piszczek's first effort, the full-back reacted quickest and headed the rebound home.

Reus had a chance to double Dortmund's lead after 21 minutes but put a free-kick off target from 20 yards, before a sliced Marcel Schmelzer cross swerved into the side netting.

Superb flowing football by Dortmund created a chance for Shinji Kagawa on the half-hour mark, but the Japan international slipped as he hit the shot and sliced the ball well wide, before Dortmund keeper Roman Burki was involved for the first time, comfortably saving Sergio Oliveira's driven 25-yard effort.

Dortmund had won all three of their competitive home games against Portuguese opponents and the German side were completely in control, but unable to work clear goalscoring opportunities. After 63 minutes Kagawa went close again, but he could not divert Reus' effort on target, although Dortmund's second goal arrived soon after.

Kagawa fed Mkhitaryan and the Armenia international teed up Reus, who shot home with the aid of a sizable deflection off Martins Indi, before Casillas did well to tip Mkhitaryan's header onto the post as Dortmund went in search of a third.
Burki denied Hyun-Jun Suk in the closing moments but Porto were unable to grab an away goal and face a tough task to mount a second-leg fightback.

:('We're f****** s***!' - Travelling Man Utd fans berate players after Midtjylland loss

    2711512_heroa.jpg

Manchester United's travelling supporters made their feelings clear after watching their side's embarrassing 2-1 Europa League defeat to FC Midtjylland.

The fans inside the MCH Arena lambasted their own players at the full-time whistle, chanting "we're f****** s***" after Louis van Gaal's side suffered yet another defeat, their 10th in all competitions in the 2015-16 campaign.

United had taken the lead in Denmark in this round-of-32 first-leg encounter, with Memphis Depay poking home after 37 minutes.

But that advantage lasted less than 10 minutes as Pione Sisto equalised shortly before half-time and then Paul Onuachu compounded Van Gaal's misery by netting a second-half winner after Juan Mata's flimsy challenge on the edge of the box.

And that clearly was not good enough for the United fans that had made the trip to Midtjylland, who, having already protested at the £71 ticket price, expressed their dismay at their under-performing stars and manager as they left the field at full-time.

Van Gaal: Man Utd fans are right… we WERE f****** s***!

    2685982_heroa.jpg

Louis van Gaal has admitted fans were right to loudly criticise Manchester United as they suffered another disappointing defeat to Danish minnows FC Midtjylland on Thursday.

The visiting fans could be heard singing "freezing cold on a Thursday night, Man Utd playing f****** s****" following Paul Onuachu's winner as the Premier League giants fell to 2-1 first-leg loss in the Europa League.

Van Gaal pointed to his growing injury list, of which Wayne Rooney was added on Wednesday and could now include David de Gea after the goalkeeper limped off during the warm-up ahead of kick-off.

"They are disappointed like we are disappointed," he told reporters. "I'm very grateful for the fans supporting us. They want to win like we want to win, and we hope that at Old Trafford we will do it.

"It is not easy to cope with 14 injured players. Almost every week I have to make a new line-up.

"The fans can criticise. They can do it. When you see the second half, maybe they are right, but we have to improve and then those fans will support us again. We have seen that in the 18 months I have been here."

It's time for Man Utd to sack Van Gaal

    2712132_heroa.jpg

There were more than 800 Manchester Unitedfans who braved the freezing temperatures, booked time off work, ignored the sneers of rival fans about the plight of their side and forked out £71 on a ticket and a whole lot more on travel to see their side take on FC Midtjylland on Thursday night.

Their reward was a 2-1 defeat after one of the most despicable performances from a Manchester United side in decades, and Louis van Gaal is the man who should pay the price for the latest and lowest in a string of failures which have left the Red Devils’ season in ruins.

It felt like it was going to be one of those nights from the moment David de Gea limped out of the warm-up to register the latest in a string of injuries, and while Van Gaal is not the man responsible for the physical ailments of his players it was the Dutchman’s decision to leave his first-team squad so low on numbers in the summer.

He has made a £300 million outlay since his arrival at Old Trafford look more like a £30m punt, and executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward is complicit in the mess United are in. Having decided to back Van Gaal to the hilt both in the transfer market and now in leaving the manager in a job, he has helped to drag the club down to a point even David Moyes did not oversee.

United were fortunate to find themselves ahead briefly in the first half in Herning. Memphis Depay swung home a right-footed effort from a low right-wing cross seconds after Vaclav Kadlec fired a glorious chance on the break straight at Sergio Romero.

The Argentine actually performed well after his late call-up to the starting XI, making fantastic saves in each half to foil the home side, yet the extent of his activity was simply further proof that United were second best for most of the game.

The damage was largely self-inflicted. Michael Carrick gifted the ball straight to Pione Sisto for the first goal, while Juan Mata offered a poor excuse for a challenge as substitute Paul Onuachu fired home the Midtjylland winner. Given the number of times United parted like the Red Sea for the Danes to make further chances, the damage could have been far greater.

There is, of course, a second leg to this tie. Next week at Old Trafford United will be given the opportunity to dig themselves out of this particular hole, and a 1-0 victory or better is all they need to progress.

But in the grand scheme of things, there is a far bigger issue to deal with.Woodward looked close to tears by the end of the game. It may have been due to the cold, but more likely it was brought on by the realisation that sitting, watching and waiting is no longer enough. He has stood by Van Gaal for the last few months of turgid football and horrid results, and the time has come to finally act.

This, surely, was the night on which Van Gaal finally ran out of lives. And if it wasn’t, the loyal band of United followers who left the MCH Arena disgusted with what they had seen will want to know why not.

:(De Gea to undergo scan after suffering knee injury

    2710562_heroa.jpg

David De Gea is set to undergo a scan on a knee injury suffered while warming up ahead of Manchester United's loss to Midtjylland.

The Spaniard had been set to start the Europa League last-32 first leg but limped down the tunnel after going through the motions ahead of kick-off, leaving back-up goalkeeper Sergio Romero to take his place.

The news follows just 24 hours after Wayne Rooney's knee injury, which could rule him out for up to two months, was confirmed.

United were left without a goalkeeper on the bench as Romero was the only alternative named in the 18-man squad with third-choice Sam Johnstone also currently injured.

"It happened in the warm-up," Louis van Gaal confirmed to reporters after the game. "We have to wait and see for the scan [on Friday], when maybe we can say more."

The news is a big blow for the Red Devils with De Gea having been in superb form once again this season, after a summer which saw him miss out on a move to Real Madrid and sign a new long-term contract at Old Trafford.

Van Gaal's injury problems, however, continue to mount up with United nursing a lengthy injury list that also includes Matteo Darmian, Phil Jones, Marcos Rojo, Luke Shaw, Marouane Fellaini, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Antonio Valencia and Adnan Januzaj.

Sporting 0-1 Bayer Leverkusen: Bellarabi puts visitors in driving seat

    teofilo-gutierrez-jonathan-tah-sporting-lissabon-bayer-leverkusen-europa-league-02182016_3cj4nfwxd56j1dflcuzavnumq.jpg

Karim Bellarabi fired Bayer Leverkusen to a 1-0 win over Sporting Lisbon in the first leg of their round of 32 Europa League tie.

In a match bereft of attacking quality, it was Roger Schmidt’s side who made the most of limited opportunities, adding to Sporting’s struggles against German opposition.

Leverkusen came close to opening the scoring inside 15 minutes when Omer Toprak got on the end of Hakan Calhanoglu’s free-kick, but the centre-half failed to test the goalkeeper from close range.

Sporting responded with the first shot on target shortly after, their only of the match, as Jefferson picked up a loose ball inside the area before forcing Bernd Leno into action.

It didn’t take long after for the visitors to open the scoring, with Karim Bellarabi getting on the end of a terrific cross from Tin Jedvaj to beat Rui Patricio at the far post after 26 minutes.

Jorge Jesus’ side failed to muster a response as they staggered into the break, with Leverkusen the more positive side following half-time. Admir Mehmedi came close to doubling their lead, getting on the end of another splendid delivery from Calhanoglu.

The introduction of Islam Slimani and Adrien Silva suggested the hosts were going to put up a fight over the final half-hour, but nothing could seem to break Leverkusen’s concentration and organisation in defence.

It went from bad to worse for Sporting when Ruben Semedo was handed his marching orders with a little over 15 minutes remaining, picking up a second yellow card for a senseless tackle into the back of Bellarabi near the halfway line, ending their hopes of a comeback.

The goal scorer came close to putting the tie to bed in the dying minutes with an extraordinary strike from range that beat Patricio, but rattled off the woodwork to keep Sporting’s slim hopes alive. The sides will meet again in one week at the BayArena.

Augsburg 0-0 Liverpool: Klopp's men held in Europa League

    2712342_heroa.jpg

Jurgen Klopp endured a frustrating return to Germany as Liverpool survived a late scare to draw 0-0 with Augsburg in the first leg of their last-32 Europa League tie at the WWK Arena on Thursday.

Making his first appearance in a German dugout since joining Liverpool in October, the former Borussia Dortmund and Mainz boss witnessed his side toil in front of goal and was fortunate to avoid defeat as Augsburg substitute Ji Dong-won hit the post in the 86th minute with goalkeeper Simon Mignolet well beaten.

Augsburg saw Raul Bobadilla - joint top-scorer in the competition before kick-off - hobble off midway through the first half, although the hosts should have led through Alexander Esswein just before half-time.

Fresh from their 6-0 rout of Aston Villa at the weekend, Liverpool eventually found their groove after the break, but Daniel Sturridge spurned their best chance before the hour.

Despite Ji's late miss, Augsburg coach Markus Weinzierl will be content to have denied Liverpool an away goal ahead of their trip to Anfield in seven days' time, while Klopp's men remain unbeaten in the competition this season.

Liverpool were unchanged for the first time in Klopp's tenure following the thrashing of Villa, while Weinzierl welcomed back Tobias Werner from a hip problem sustained in November.

A misplaced pass from Markus Feulner saw former Hoffenheim playmaker Roberto Firmino direct the first effort of the game straight at Marwin Hitz before a last-gasp Ragnar Klavan tackle denied Sturridge a one-on-one.

Augsburg's slow start was not helped when Bobadilla limped off with a hamstring problem 22 minutes in.

However, the hosts gradually grew into the game without the Argentinian and should have led on the stroke of half-time when Esswein fired straight at Mignolet after a quick break down the right.

Liverpool started the second half brightly, Philippe Coutinho making his first contribution of the game when he clipped Alberto Moreno's cutback wide.

Sturridge wasted a golden opportunity to put Liverpool in front before the hour when he sidefooted wide from close range prior to the hour mark following clever play down the right from Nathaniel Clyne and James Milner.

As the game livened up, Liverpool piled on pressure and saw Sturridge test Hitz from distance, while Konstantinos Stafylidis cut out a dangerous Clyne delivery.

Augsburg captain Paul Verhaegh almost turned into his own net after an inswinging Jordan Henderson delivery before the hosts failed to make the most of a loose Clyne pass, Halil Altintop eventually being crowded out as he was unable to set Werner free down the left.

Moreno and Caiuby had good chances in the final stages before Ji was nearly the hero when he struck the post late on after unleashing a first-time shot around 12 yards out, the former Sunderland man almost making a low-key display worse for Klopp's men ahead of the second leg next week.

Carrick: Manchester United 'nowhere near good enough' against Midtjylland

    michael-carrick-europa-league-manchester-united_i3hovsvd10fu16d812z79vcl9.jpg

Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick was furious with his side's performance in their 2-1 Europa League defeat to Midtjylland.

Memphis Depay gave Louis van Gaal's side a first-half lead in the first leg of the last-32 tie, but goals from Pione Sisto and Ebere Paul Onuachu secured a surprising yet deserved victory for the Danish champions on home soil.

Carrick has challenged his team-mates to overturn the deficit at Old Trafford next Thursday in order to keep their hopes of lifting the trophy alive and restore some belief to an injury-ravaged side that has won just two of their last six matches."It's nowhere near good enough, it's got to be a lot better," the midfielder told BT Sport .

"We caused a lot of our own problems but we scored a good goal. It's just not good enough, we haven't played well enough, we didn't kick on after we scored. We should've won that. We're going home very disappointed.

"That's the only positive we can take - that we've got another chance to put it right and go through. It's not going to be easy but we still fancy our chances to go through. But we've given ourselves a tougher job than we'd hoped."We've got to give everything, we want to go further in this competition and get some sort of belief and momentum back and start winning.
