Benzema back in training ahead of Madrid derby

    karimbenzema-cropped_18rjg882wu2gt1xui97zsnvl9w.jpg

Karim Benzema has returned to full training with Real Madrid ahead of Saturday's derby with Atletico Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The French striker missed Sunday's 1-1 draw with Malaga due to a hip problem as Zinedine Zidane's men slipped further off the pace in La Liga's title race.

Madrid sit a point behind second-placed Atletico and nine adrift of leaders Barcelona but have Benzema back fit as they look leapfrog their cross-city rivals and keep their slim title hopes alive.

The 28-year-old trained with Zidane's squad on Thursday, although Gareth Bale and Pepe look set to be absent again this weekend with calf and foot problems respectively.

Benzema was on target in the reverse fixture against Atletico in October as the sides drew 1-1 at the Vicente Calderon.

Wenger will win Premier League and reach Champions League final soon - Jensen

Former Arsenal midfielder John Jensen believes Arsene Wenger can win the Premier League and Champions League over the next few years, insisting he should be considered of equal stature to ex-Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson. The pair forged a fierce rivalry between Wenger's arrival in England in 1996 and Ferguson's retirement in 2013 as their clubs battled on the domestic front.

Ferguson can claim to have had the better of the contest, finishing his career with 13 Premier League titles and two Champions League crowns.

Wenger, meanwhile, has lifted the Premier League on three occasions – the last of those following an unbeaten season in 2003-04 – and reached one Champions League final, where his side lost to Barcelona in 2006.

Ahead of the clubs' league meeting at Old Trafford on Sunday, Arsenal sit two points off the top in third, while United are 10 points further adrift, and Jensen feels Wenger will soon be lifting the league crown once again.

"Ferguson changed the total mentality of Manchester United in winning trophies," Jensen, who played for the Gunners from 1992 to 1996, told Omnisport. "Arsene Wenger has done the same at Arsenal.

"So I think it is very important for Arsene Wenger that he should continue and hopefully finish on a high in the last two or three years. He can probably go out winning the Premier League and go a long way in the Champions League.

"He's been to the final, but he's never won it. So if he can just finish highly, I would probably put him in the same seat as Sir Alex Ferguson. These two men for me are probably the two best managers in Premier League history.

"And I think Arsene Wenger deserves that. Since he came he has always been in the top four. Always qualifying for the Champions League – that is an absolutely amazing achievement."So I really hope, and cross my fingers, that he will win the Premier League the next two times and get to the Champions League final."

The 50-year-old also feels winning the league title this season would be special for the Frenchman since it has been so long since he last lifted the crown.

"I know Arsene Wenger very well. I think every title he wins is going to be the same for him, but maybe this one will be special because it has been so many years now and he hasn't won.

"And I think it's 11 years or something like that since he won the Premier League. He's won some FA Cups, but now because there has been a lot of pressure over the last four or five years he hasn't won.

"He has now gone out and is spending money on big players as well. I think this will probably maybe be one of the best Championship wins, if he wins it."

Koeman hails Hiddink impact at Chelsea

    ronaldkoeman-cropped_8wr6uhq0wrt1hcg1fqn53mjm.jpg

Ronald Koeman has praised the positive effect Guus Hiddink has had at Stamford Bridge as Southampton prepare to host Chelsea on Saturday.Hiddink arrived at Chelsea in December for his second spell in charge, following the sacking of Jose Mourinho.

Since his appointment, the reigning Premier League champions have lost just once in 14 outings – 2-1 at Paris Saint-Germain in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie.

Koeman played under Hiddink at PSV in the late 1980s, as well as acting as his assistant with Netherlands in the late 1990s, and he believes his fellow Dutchman was the perfect choice to steady the ship at Stamford Bridge, following a dreadful start to their title defence."They signed Guus Hiddink, he has a good relationship with the players and I think he's the right person for the right moment in the season," Koeman said.

"The team is looking more comfortable. They're coming back and I was expecting that. Maybe the way the manager is dealing with the team is the best for this moment.

"He's a coach with a lot of experience at all levels and he gives players important support. He's always defending his players and that was good for Chelsea at that moment."A run of five wins and a draw from their last six matches – all without conceding – has seen Southampton climb to sixth and prompted questions over Koeman's long-term future at a club which continues to prosper under his guidance.

Asked whether the board had spoken to him about a new contract, Koeman replied: "No. I'm still in my second season, it's too early to make conclusions or to talk about the future.

"Let me first finish this season and try and continue what we are doing until now. I don't like to talk about my future because it's not the most important thing at the moment.

"It's my second year of my three-year contract. I am a happy man at the moment, we are doing well and I know what can happen in football."The Saints won October's reverse fixture 3-1, having fallen 1-0 behind in London.

Schweinsteiger: I have no doubt I will be fit for Euro 2016

    bastianschweinsteiger-cropped_6b7wgey6tbj516j6437y6xtpe.jpg

Bastian Schweinsteiger says he has no doubts that he will be fit to play at Euro 2016.

The Germany captain has endured an injury-hit first campaign at Manchester United and is currently sidelined with a knee injury he sustained against Sheffield United at the beginning of January.

Former Germany skipper Lothar Matthaus questioned Schweinsteiger's place in the squad in his Bild column on Thursday, stating coach Joachim Low should not take him on "previous achievements", but the 31-year-old is adamant he will be fit and raring to go when the tournament kicks-off on June 10."If they don't change plans and switch the Euros to the beginning of March then everything looks fine. I have 0.0 per cent doubts about playing," Schweinsteiger told Bild.

"A ruptured ligament needs time but everything is healing perfectly. I know my body well, everything will be fine."In about five days I can start running again and five days later I should be able to train with the ball. I will be fully fit in March, I think."

Former Germany and Bayern Munich team-mate Oliver Kahn has also raised his concerns about whether Schweinsteiger is still good enough to earn a place in Low's star-studded squad. But Schweinsteiger has no doubts, adding: "I have played in 27 competitive fixtures this season, despite my ban and my injury. There are a lot of things that can be better but this claim is very far-fetched."

Ronaldo: I'm very happy at Madrid & I want to be here

    2705772_heroa.jpg

Cristiano Ronaldo has insisted he is happy at Real Madrid and has no intention of leaving the club.

The Portuguese star has been linked with a move away from Santiago Bernabeu recently, with Paris Saint-Germain widely mooted as a possible destination for the three-time Ballon d'Or winner.

But despite criticism of his form at times this season and the speculation surrounding his future, Ronaldo has stressed he continues to feel appreciated by the Madrid fans and is eager to prolong his time at the club.

"Real Madrid is a club with a lot of pressure from both inside and outside, but I have been here for many years and I am used to it," he told Mahou.

"The grandeur of the club means that people look at us differently to others. However, on a personal level things are positive, I am very happy and I want to be at this club."I feel the support of the fans. When the people sing my name, I'm proud."

Despite winning La Liga and the Champions League just once each since his move from Manchester United in 2009, the 32-year-old insists he has no regrets over his career in Spain."To be the best in Europe is the biggest dream and we did it two years ago. It was a unique moment for us and for the fans, but there have been other important ones," he said.

"I could not be more proud of the time I've spent with Real Madrid."Madrid host Atletico Madrid in the derby on Saturday and Ronaldo accepts it is a must-win game if they are to have any hope of overhauling Barcelona, who have a nine-point lead on Zinedine Zidane's side at the top of the table.

"It's an important game at home, with our fans. They defend very well but we have to win. Although La Liga is difficult, we're going to fight until the end," Ronaldo added.

    Barcelona announce new Unicef deal

    msn-cropped_gpm1psif2h731icttduyzgnsy.jpg

Barcelona have extended their sponsorship deal with Unicef until 2020 and increased their annual donation to the children's charity.

The current Barca board, headed up by Josep Maria Bartomeu, have been criticised by club figures such as ex-president Joan Laporta for abolishing the previous shirt sponsorship deal with Unicef in favour of a lucrative commercial agreement with Qatar Airways.

The European and Spanish have now confirmed they have extended their tie-up with the charity and boosted their annual donation to them from €1.5 million to €2m.

President Bartomeu and vice-president Jordi Cardoner were present at a Camp Nou ceremony on Thursday to confirm the deal, with Barca's link with Unicef set to reach its 10th anniversary in September.

Bayer Leverkusen 3-1 Sporting: Bellarabi brace bags last 16 spot

    bellarabi-leverkusen-sporting-europa-league-02182016_y05mja32ate31aedpxk0k42rl.jpg

Bayer Leverkusen sealed their place in the last 16 of the Europa League with a 3-1 win over Sporting at BayArena on Thursday, sealing a 4-1 aggregate victory.

Karim Bellarabi broke the deadlock midway through the first half, as he smashed an effort from close range past helpless goalkeeper Rui Patricio after being fed through on goal by Javier Hernandez.

Sporting had a good opportunity to achieve a foothold in the tie moments later but Carlos Mane fluffed his lines and stumbled over the ball inside the area to let the chance go begging.Seconds later however they were level, Bernd Leno could only parry Mane’s shot to the feet of Joao Mario, who slotted in from close range to level up the match.

But Bellarabi sealed Bayer’s progression with a piece of fine individual skill in the second period, cutting inside from the left flank before crashing in a powerful drive that flew into the net.

With less than five minutes remaining on the clock Hakan Calhanoglu put the game beyond any doubt as he struck a wonderful third for the hosts.

Leverkusen were the ones to start faster as Wendell forced Rui Patrico, Sporting’s most decorated appearance-maker in Europe following tonight's exersions, into a save after 12 minutes.

Sporting began to work their way into the game after a pedestrian start from the visitors, however, their task for the evening became all the more difficult when they were caught on the counter-attack.

An inviting ball forward was collected by Javier Hernandez on the edge of the box and the former Manchester United striker calmly fed Germany international Bellarabi, who drove a low shot between the legs of Patricio.

But the hosts' lead didn't last long as Mario stabbed home a leveller just before the break, giving Sporting hope of reaching the next round. However, it was Leverkusen who took control after the interval as Bellarabi, who scored the only goal in the first leg, smashed home a wonderstrike from distance after 65 minutes.

Cutting in from the left wing, the 25-year-old struck across the ball with venom leaving Patricio with little chance to keep him at bay.

Apart from Bernd Leno needing to rush off his line to deny substitute Islam Slimani from prodding home, Leverkusen were comfortable at the back before adding another fantastic goal late on.

Hakan Calhanoglu, who caused Sporting all sorts of problems with his set-piece delivery on the night, blasted home a third in the dying minutes from Jonathan Tah’s long ball pass forward.

Liverpool 1-0 Augsburg: Milner penalty sends Reds through

    2751662_heroa.jpg

James Milner's early penalty sealed Liverpool's progression to the last 16 of the Europa League with a 1-0 victory over Augsburg at Anfield.

After a goalless stalemate in Germany, Jurgen Klopp named a strong side for Thursday's second leg despite the prospect of the League Cup final in three days' time and the hosts were set on their way when Milner opened the scoring five minutes in thanks to a bizarre handball from Dominik Kohr.

Aside from a couple of scares at the back, the hosts dominated the remainder of the first half as the attacking trio of Daniel Sturridge, Philippe Coutinho and Roberto Firmino caused plenty of problems.

An away goal would have kept Augsburg's maiden European campaign alive, however, as Klopp once again saw Liverpool struggle to put their opponents to the sword.

Sturridge and Firmino spurned chances while Augsburg's best opportunity fell to Tobias Werner as Liverpool did things the hard way ahead of their trip to Wembley to face Manchester City.

Caiuby threatened a shaky Liverpool early on but the home side - who had Lucas Leiva in defence ahead of Kolo Toure - settled any early nerves when they took the lead through Milner.

Kohr handled in the area after being barged by team-mate Caiuby, allowing the experienced midfielder to tuck the ball home to Marwin Hitz's left.

Liverpool continued to fashion chances as the impressive Sturridge laid on opportunities for Coutinho and Firmino, although Simon Mignolet was required to palm Kostas Stafylidis' shot away.

Firmino and Coutinho both tested Hitz again before Cauiby almost punished Liverpool's lack of a cutting edge when he rolled the ball wide from a tight angle after rounding Mignolet following a loose Lucas pass.

Hitz tipped a Sturridge strike onto the post shortly before half-time and the England international should have settled the tie inside four minutes of the restart.

Augsburg captain Paul Verhaegh gave the ball away on the right, allowing Coutinho to play in Sturridge - who appeared to be offside - and after cutting inside Ragnar Klavan he could only place the ball past Hitz's left-hand post.

Klopp's men continued to dominate possession, with Firmino and going close again before the hour mark as the home side struggled to put the tie to bed.

Divock Origi was introduced for Sturridge midway through the second half - perhaps with Wembley in mind - and the change coincided with a late spell of Augsburg pressure.

Mignolet denied Werner one-on-one before he was replaced by Augsburg's top scorer Raul Bobadilla.

The Paraguay striker failed to make the difference, however, as Liverpool held firm to progress despite a late scare when Stafylidis curled a free-kick just wide.

Lazio 3-1 Galatasaray: Klose helps seal last-16 passage

    2752122_heroa.jpg

Lazio booked their place in the last-16 of the Europa League after second-half goals from Marco Parolo, Felipe Anderson and Miroslav Klose secured a 3-1 win over Galatasaray.

It was the Biancocelesti who held the advantage following a 1-1 draw in the first leg in Turkey, and Stefano Pioli’s side never appeared in danger of letting it slip.

The first half was deprived of any real quality in front of goal with little joy to be found in attack, as the two defensive units came out resoundingly on top.

The only decent chance of the opening frame was a Lucas Biglia strike from distance just ahead of the interval, but Fernando Muslera managed to tip it over the bar.

The game sprung to life after the restart and Alessandro Matri came agonisingly close to opening the scoring when he rattled an effort off the woodwork.

It was not long after that the Biancocelesti finally found the breakthrough, as Parolo rose to head home a thumping effort following Biglia’s corner, just shy of the hour mark.

Lazio doubled their lead with a second goal in as many minutes, as Felipe Anderson got on the end of a terrific passage of play, rolling the ball past a stranded Muslera following a lovely unselfish set-up from Matri.

The hosts switched off, however, after doubling their lead, as Galatasaray produced a response inside of a minute – Yasin Oztekin getting on the end of Sabri Sarioglu’s through-ball to beat Federico Marchetti at the near post.

Klose removed all doubt exactly 10 minutes later, shortly after his introduction, meeting Stefan Radu’s teasing delivery across the face of goal to restore Lazio’s two-goal lead.

The goal deflated any hopes of a Galatasaray comeback, with the visitors unable to muster much of a fight back over the final 20 minutes as their European journey comes to an end.

The Biancocelesti will not have to wait long to find out who they will face in the last 16, with the draw set to be held on Friday.

Conte close to signing three-year Chelsea deal

    2671762_heroa.jpg

Antonio Conte is close to agreeing a three-year deal to become Chelsea's next manager after holding positive talks with the Premier League champions on Thursday, Goal understands.

Negotiations between the two parties progressed smoothly and a further meeting has been scheduled to finalise the details of a three-year contract which will see the Italy national team coach earn £6.5 million annually before tax.

The former Juventus head coach is credited with returning the Bianconeri to the top of Italian football, winning three consecutive Serie A titles between 2012 and 2014, and Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich has made the 46-year-old his main priority in the search to replace interim boss Guus Hiddink.

And after meeting in London the deal is close to completion, with Conte already learning English in a bid to ensure a smooth adaptation process.

Conte is set to take over at Stamford Bridge following Euro 2016, with the Italy head coach continuing in his current role until the tournament concludes.

:love:Man Utd 5-1 FC Midtjylland: Rashford hits brace in dream debut

    2752902_heroa.jpg

Marcus Rashford marked his Manchester United debut with a brace as his side came from behind to thump 10-man Midtjylland 5-1 at Old Trafford and progress to the Europa League's last 16.

The 18-year-old had initially been named on the substitutes' bench, but a hamstring injury suffered by Anthony Martial in the warm-up meant he was called into the starting XI at the last minute.

With United trailing 2-1 from the first leg, Rashford's bow got off to a less than ideal start as Pione Sisto - a goalscorer from the opening encounter - produced a fine individual effort to open the scoring.

United's response was swift against the Danish champions, as the impressive Memphis Depay induced Nikolay Bodurov into deflecting the ball into his own net five minutes later before the hosts wasted the chance to level the tie before half-time when Juan Mata saw his penalty saved by Mikkel Andersen.

Under-fire Van Gaal had bizarrely called for his United players to be "horny" in the build-up to the game and they responded in fine style, displaying great attacking penetration in the second half as the visitors wilted under the pressure.

Mata cut the ball back for Rashford to finish in calm fashion in the 63rd minute and 12 minutes later the forward slotted home in similar style from Guillermo Varela's cross

With time ticking away, Ander Herrera proved more successful than Mata from the penalty spot, before Midtjylland lost Andre Romer to a second yellow card.

Depay then got the goal his performance deserved with a fine finish in the final minute to emphatically ensure United avoided what would have been an embarrassing exit from the tournament.

United showed great attacking desire in the early stages as Rashford, Depay and Jesse Lingard all threatened but, for all their dominance of possession, the hosts found themselves behind in the 27th minute.

Marco Urena fed Sisto, who jinked away from Daley Blind and Michael Carrick on the edge of the box before firing past Sergio Romero into the bottom-left corner.

Depay shot straight at Andersen as United went in search of an immediate response that duly arrived when the Dutchman got to the byline and drilled in a low ball that Bodurov diverted home.

Morgan Schneiderlin went close with an acrobatic effort and Depay shot narrowly wide from 25 yards before Schneiderlin headed against the post as United pressed hard to level the tie before the break.

Romer's foul on Herrera gave Mata the perfect opportunity to do just that, but the Spaniard saw his penalty pushed behind by Andersen diving low to his right.

United began the second half brightly and Schneiderlin opted to square instead of shoot from Mata's lofted ball, before Herrera headed a golden chance into the side netting following more trickery from Depay.

Shortly after the hour, Mata did well to keep Varela's cross in next to the left byline and cut the ball back for Rashford, who converted with a minimum of fuss from eight yards.

And, after Lingard was booked for a dive that will keep him out of the first leg of United's last-16 tie, Rashford was on hand to sweep home Varela's cross from the right to complete his double.

But the drama did not end there as Herrera converted from 12 yards following Kian Hansen's handling of Depay's shot three minutes from time.

Depay was then hauled back by Romer, who was issued with a second caution, and the Dutchman capped a fine performance by rifling in the fifth as United romped to victory and eased some of the pressure on Van Gaal.

Napoli 1-1 Villarreal: Pina equaliser enough to eliminate Italians

    tomas-pina-napoli-villarreal-europa-league_1kwlsxuvctquq1s167ym1rq3na.jpg

Villarreal confirmed their place in the last 16 of the Europa League following a 2-1 aggregate victory over Napoli on Thursday, following a 1-1 draw at San Paolo.

Marek Hamsik provided the hosts with hope of qualification when he struck a fine volley from the edge of the area inside 20 minutes, showing exquisite technique to find the bottom corner after the Villarreal defence failed to clear sufficiently.

Following the half-time interval, it was the Spanish outfit who took control of the game, as defender Tomas Pina remarkably somehow found the far corner of the net from the edge of the box.

The match started at a slow pace, but suddenly burst into life when Hamsik pounced on a poor clearance at the top of the box to lash an admirable volley into the corner to level matters on aggregate.

Napoli still knew that one Villarreal goal would require them to score two more, and they set about trying to take the lead outright in the tie.

Dries Mertens dragged a shot just wide at the end of the half, moments before Mateo Musacchio deflected a cross onto his own near post.

However, out of nowhere, the visitors would snare an away goal 59 minutes in, as Pina’s attempted cross from the corner of the box sailed into the far side of Pepe Reina's goal instead.

Napoli were suddenly in all sorts of trouble, and with a two-goal aggregate deficit to make up, they spent the rest of the second period camped in the Villarreal half.

Insigne and Higuain both missed decent chances, but the staunch defence of the visitors was enough to prevent Alphonse Areola from any serious danger in the closing stages, as Napoli bowed out of the competition.

Porto 0-1 Dortmund: Unfortunate Casillas nets own goal to decide tie

    ikercasillas-cropped_19ne0golnupk619wfmvtvzehn3.jpg

An own goal from Iker Casillas helped Borussia Dortmund record a 1-0 away win over Porto in Thursday's Europa League last-32 tie to make it a 3-0 aggregate success for the Bundesliga side.

Hosts Porto knew they needed an early goal to boost their chances of a comeback after their first-leg loss, but were dealt a major blow halfway through the first half when Casillas gifted Dortmund the lead in unfortunate fashion.

The former Real Madrid goalkeeper did well to deny Marco Reus from close range, but Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was first to the rebound - in what seemed to be an offside position - and unleashed a shot that crossed the line after hitting the crossbar and Casillas.

Evandro, Silvestre Varela, Vincent Aboubakar and Yacine Brahimi all had good chances to level the score - the latter hitting the crossbar late on - but Roman Burki proved to be too much of an obstacle between the sticks as it remained 1-0 as Dortmund booked their spot in the last 16.

Ruben Neves threatened for Porto early on with a powerful strike from 20 yards out that went high and wide. Dortmund initially struggled to create any chances of note, but effectively decided the tie with their first good opportunity after 23 minutes.

Casillas reacted well to keep out Reus' volley after a cross from the right, only for Aubameyang to pounce on the rebound and see his shot go in via the woodwork and the unfortunate Porto goalkeeper.

Moussa Marega came close to levelling within 60 seconds of the opener when he tried his luck with a right-footed shot from a narrow angle that flew narrowly over.
Evandro caused the Dortmund defence all kinds of trouble in the 40th minute with a superb dribble through the middle, before placing his shot just wide at the far post.

Varela got another chance to restore parity in the dying seconds of the first half after a fine cross from Miguel Layun, but Dortmund goalkeeper Burki showed his class with a superb reflex save.

Porto kept pushing for the equaliser after the break and Burki was again called into action following a cheeky backheel from Aboubakar in the 55th minute, with the Switzerland international only just keeping it out.Aubameyang thought he had doubled Dortmund's lead at the hour mark after being set up by Henrikh Mkhitaryan, only for referee Mark Clattenburg to blow for offside.

A fine Burki save denied Suk Hyun-jun with 15 minutes remaining before substitute Brahimi came incredibly close to equalising in the closing stages with a powerful strike against the crossbar.

Mkhitaryan also hit the woodwork in the 90th minute as it somehow remained 1-0 to Thomas Tuchel's men.

Tottenham 3-0 Fiorentina: Spurs cruise into last 16 in style

Tottenham produced a rampant performance to comprehensively demolish Fiorentina 3-0 in the second leg of their round-of-32 Europa League tie on Thursday.

Mauricio Pochettino's men held a 1-1 result from the first leg in Florence and simply needed a draw to ensure progress to the next stage of the tournament.

The Argentine opted to rest some of his bigger names at White Hart Lane but that did not stop the side from taking the initiative and finding their opener in the 25th minute through Ryan Mason.

Tottenham controlled proceedings from there and duly added a second through Erik Lamela who turned home a fine instinctive finish.

Gonzalo Rodriguez's own-goal nine minutes from full-time then ensured an emphatic 4-1 aggregate scoreline for the hosts, who march into the last-16 in convincing fashion.

The result helped Tottenham banish the memory of their FA Cup defeat to Crystal Palace, and keeps the north London side on course for their first European trophy since they lifted the Uefa Cup in 1984.

An assured victory will have delighted Pochettino, who saw his side dominate despite the absence of top scorer Harry Kane, suggesting Spurs can balance their continental campaign with a tilt at the Premier League title.

The hosts had to overcome a rocky start, however, as Fiorentina pressed from the outset, but Marcos Alonso was fortunate not to give away a penalty when he appeared to block a Kieran Trippier cross with his arms.

Spurs gradually eased into the rhythm that has helped them claim five consecutive wins in the Premier League, and Eric Dier's header from Lamela's corner was almost turned in by Dele Alli as it whistled past the post after 10 minutes.Christian Eriksen gave Fiorentina goalkeeper Ciprian Tatarusanu his first test of the night a powerful 20-yard drive, and the game's first goal soon followed.

After a sweeping move down the Spurs left, Alli squared to Mason, who scampered into the box and opened up his body to side-foot a shot low into the net under Tatarusanu.

The goal settled any nerves Spurs might have had and the home side dominated the rest of the first half, barring a Josip Ilicic free-kick that picked out Borja Valero but the Spaniard headed just wide at the near post.

Chadli had the ball in the net inside a minute of the restart, but the goal was ruled out for offside and Fiorentina proceeded to probe for an equaliser, but Hugo Lloris made an easy save from Valero before Spurs took the game away from Paulo Sousa's men.

Eriksen broke out of midfield and fed Chadli, whose drive was well saved but Lamela collected the rebound and curled a brilliant left-footed shot beyond Tatarusanu. The win was wrapped up when Trippier's cross was met by the sliding Rodriguez who hooked the ball into the roof of his own net.

The only fly in the ointment on a fine evening for Spurs was a late yellow card for the outstanding Alli, who was cautioned for simulation and will be suspended for the first leg in the last-16.

:DRash, bang, wallop: Rashford brings sexy back to Man Utd

    marcus-rashford-manchester-united_cx6y3k79l88p12ehmtwn28s2k.jpg

There were less than 30 minutes remaining until Manchester United’s crunch Europa League clash against Midtjylland kicked-off when Anthony Martial clutched his right hamstring and headed for the tunnel. Practically the only option Louis van Gaal had at his disposal as he came to terms with a 15th first-team injury was to give Marcus Rashford his senior debut. And what a debut!

Rashford had not started a single game above Under-19 level all season, and his last goal had come in the 2-0 win against Stoke City which ended a run of 12 straight league defeats for United’s Under-18s and lifted them off the foot of the table.

It hardly seemed the perfect build-up to a must-win European encounter on which his manager’s future rested, but the 18-year-old delivered for Van Gaal just when the exit door beckoned for both United’s European campaign and the Dutchman’s spell as a manager. In the 63rd minute, and with Midtjylland holding on to a 3-2 aggregate lead, Juan Mata chased down an over-hit cross and pulled back for Rashford to slam home.

Even had United gone on to suffer the ignominy of a Europa League exit, it was still an outcome the young striker could have taken some personal pride from.

Yet he was by no means finished there. Twelve minutes later, he hit a tie-winning second after his clever movement saw him meet Guillermo Varela’s cross at the far post. It was the stuff of dreams, and all from a player whose subconscious last night could not have even predicted a starting appearance.

United went on to win handsomely, with Ander Herrera and Memphis Depay grabbing further goals to give the score on the night a lopsided appearance at 5-1, and the 6-3 aggregate score made it look easier than it was for much of the tie.

But without Rashford’s key contribution during an important phase of the proceedings, United might well have struggled to put the tie to bed.

Van Gaal will not just be congratulating Rashford tonight, he should also be thanking him. But for the debut star, the experienced manager might well have been a goner. His bacon has been saved by a centre forward who had not even been born when Van Gaal became a Champions League winner with Ajax in 1995.

The Dutchman lives to fight another day, but for once he is not the story of the night. As United fans head home tonight it is not Van Gaal’s name, nor Jose Mourinho’s, which is being repeated over and over. Marcus Rashford is the talk of the town.

Van Gaal plays down Martial injury fears

Louis van Gaal has played down the severity of Anthony Martial's hamstring injury after the striker limped out of the warm-up prior to Manchester United's 5-1 win over FC Midtjylland.

Martial was forced to pull out of United's fixture on Thursday evening, but Van Gaal's side were able to overturn their first-leg defeat in Denmark as Marcus Rashford's double, along with an own goal from Nikolay Bodurov and strikes from Ander Herrera and Memphis Depay sealed a comfortable victory at Old Trafford.

United, who also have Wayne Rooney sidelined due to a knee problem, could be without Martial for Sunday's clash with Arsenal but Van Gaal insists the injury is not as bad as first feared.

"That is the first muscle injury and he is smart, wise to step out because it is a tight hamstring so I don't think it is very heavy," said the United boss.

Rashford breaks George Best's Manchester United record that lasted 51 YEARS

    2753362_heroa.jpg

Marcus Rashford dazzled on his Manchester United debut and managed to surpass a 51-year-old record held by George Best in the process.

The 18-year-old scored twice as United emphatically overturned their embarassing defeat in Denmark to run out 5-1 winners over FC Midtjylland at Old Trafford to secure a place in the Europa League last 16.

Rashford's first goal came through some sharp movement inside the box to meet Juan Mata's cutback, while his positioning skills shone through for his second as he turned in Guillermo Varela's cross from close range.

And at 18 years and 117 days, Rashford has now become United's youngest goalscorer in all European competitons since George Best (18 years and 158 days) struck in a 6-1 victory over Djurgarden in the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup in October 1964.

Van Gaal hails 'fantastic' Rashford after debut double

    2752412_heroa.jpg

Louis van Gaal spoke of his delight for Marcus Rashford after the 18-year-old marked his Manchester United debut with a brace in the 5-1 Europa League win over FC Midtjylland on Thursday.

Rashford was called into the starting line-up at the last moment following Anthony Martial’s hamstring injury in the warm-up and turned the tie on its head with two goals midway through the second half.

And, while tempering expectations of continued such performances from the youngster, Van Gaal said he was very happy with the striker’s reaction to his late call-up.

“I have said already a lot of times that is fantastic but you have to be consistent,” the Dutchman told a post-match press conference.

“We are looking for consistent strikers and there are not so many on this earth, but he made a great performance I think.”

Van Gaal added that he had no hesitation in promoting Rashford to the starting XI despite having other options thanks to his versatile attack line.

He said: “He was the natural substitute of Martial. You see when Cameron Borthwick-Jackson was out I put in Joe Riley because he plays left-full back in the second team against Norwich, when they won 8-0 [sic, 7-0] and he was the best player on the pitch.

“But the youngsters always play the first match no problem, for us it is then the second or third match. That is the learning process.”

The 6-3 aggregate victory sends United into Friday’s draw for the round of 16, and the manager says the performance was also a source of some satisfaction.

“We played very well, they scored the first time they crossed halfway," he said. "Maybe then some teams lose confidence, but no our spirit was excellent.

“Even after we missed a penalty, we continued with attacking football and the spirit to win. They were well organised but the spirit was there and a lot of players reached a higher level.”
