Real Madrid 7-1 Celta Vigo: Ronaldo quadruple obliterates visitors

    2801222_heroa.jpg

Real Madrid tore apart Celta Vigo, thanks in large part to a Cristiano Ronaldo hat-trick, as they made an explosive continuation to their efforts to repair their Primera Division title challenge with a 7-1 triumph.

Pepe opened the scoring in the run-up to half-time before Ronaldo stepped up a gear after the break, netting his first three goals in a period of less than 15 minutes before going on to hit a fourth.

Iago Aspas had scored a consolation goal for the visitors but Jese Rodriguez and Gareth Bale completed the rout with efforts of their own.

The result provides huge relief to head coach Zinedine Zidane, who has now overseen two straight wins since facing criticism for the derby defeat by Atletico Madrid - a team who now sit just one point clear in second spot ahead of their game against Valencia on Sunday.

Madrid were boosted ahead of kick-off as Bale returned to the substitutes' bench, having been out since January with a calf injury, while Marcelo sat alongside him after missing the last two matches with a similar issue.

It was Celta who came closest to an early lead when Fabian Orellana sent in a cross from the right and Aspas rose to thump a header against the crossbar. The former Liverpool striker then seemed destined to score from the rebound but Keylor Navas produced a pivotal reaction save to deny him.

That prompted the hosts to respond, with Ruben Blanco impressively denying Isco after the midfielder had showed good composure to chest down Pepe's cross and work an opening from six yards out.

Celta were forced to bring off an injured Pablo Hernandez and the pressure was growing, with Ronaldo denied a penalty after he felt that Sergi Gomez had shoved him to the ground in the area.

Blanco then denied Madrid again with an excellent one-handed save to keep out a Casemiro header from Isco's cross and, from the resulting corner, the breakthrough did arrive four minutes before half-time when Pepe powerfully headed home Isco's delivery from 10 yards.

Zidane was smiling on 50 minutes when Ronaldo showed his class to make it two. Collecting possession from Sergio Ramos, the Portugal international turned and unleashed a powerful, dipping strike from 25 yards which was too good for Blanco.

Ronaldo played on after appearing to suffer an injury from a Hugo Mallo challenge and was presented with a free-kick opportunity on 58 minutes after Marcelo Diaz fouled Isco. The 31-year-old stepped up and dipped a brilliant shot over the wall and into the top corner.

Blanco did well to keep out another free-kick from Ronaldo soon after, before Celta struck just after the hour mark. A huge long ball from Gomez completely caught out the home defence and Aspas confidently chipped over Navas.

But Ronaldo completed his hat-trick within two minutes of that goal, capping off a fine passing move with a simple close-range finish, as the influential Isco claimed the assist.

Bale and Marcelo both came on to make their returns in the closing stages and were on the pitch 14 minutes from time as Ronaldo headed in from Jese's corner to move past Zarra's mark, with the Bernabeu crowd lapping it up.

Jese then made it six within a minute after creating the opportunity himself with a purposeful run and accurate finish and Bale marked his return with a similar strike, running unchallenged before picking his spot as Madrid warmed up for the second leg of their Champions League last-16 tie against Roma on Tuesday in stunning style.

Check out ronaldo's first two goals. Superb
First free kick goal eken passe same way thawa free kick ekak gahuwa e widihatama. but the goal keeper jumped that time.

Terry: I can play at the top level for three more years

    hd-john-terry_6jmsktke0f241f7bz4s97f61o.jpg

John Terry believes he can play at the top level for another three years as he prepares to leave Chelsea at the end of the season.

The centre-back is yet to be offered a new contract and is expected to leave after the current campaign, though the Blues have insisted they could still extend his stay before his current deal expires.

And Terry feels he is still good enough to play Champions League-level football for some time and reiterated his desire to remain at Stamford Bridge. "While I’ve got a couple of years left, the main thing for me is to fully focus on that and give everything," he told reporters at The London Football Awards.

“I’ve definitely got two or three years in me. I’d be gutted if it isn’t at Chelsea, I’ve said clearly I want to stay.“As a player in your mid-30s you get written off a little bit.

“Pretty much like the team early on in the season! We get written off and all of a sudden, a couple of wins and who knows what’s going to happen?”

The 35-year-old is hoping to go into management after he brings his playing career to an end, but admits it is not going to be easy. “Doing my badges has taken a bit longer than expected," he added.“I’ve had so many managers and learned so much it would be wasted if I don’t dip my toe in at some point in my career.”

Chelsea are looking to overturn a 2-1 deficit when they host Paris Saint-Germain in the second leg of their Champions League tie on Wednesday and the defender is anticipating a good performance, adding that he hopes Guus Hiddink can stay on beyond this season.

“Those nights at the Bridge are unbelievable. They are big occasions. We have players who are hungry and have had a lot of disappointments in the competition that want to go on further, so it’s going to be a good game."If he [Hiddink] stays on that will great. He’s shown he’s a top-class manager and other things may come for him.”

Crystal Palace 1-2 Liverpool: Benteke gives 10-man Reds last minute win

    2807652_heroa.jpg

Christian Benteke coolly converted a penalty deep into stoppage time as Liverpool came from behind with 10 men to beat Crystal Palace 2-1 at Selhurst Park.

Palace were on course for a first Premier League triumph in 12 attempts - and their fourth in succession over Liverpool - when recalled midfield Joe Ledley fired in his first goal of the season in the 48th minute and James Milner left the visitors needlessly depleted when he collected a second booking after the hour.

Nevertheless, Jurgen Klopp's team retained the attacking intent and were rewarded when Palace goalkeeper Alex McCarthy lost his footing while making a clearance to leave Roberto Firmino to slot home in the 72nd minute for his eighth Premier League goal of the season.

McCarthy, only playing because of an injury to regular No.1 Wayne Hennessey, saved twice from Benteke either side of Alberto Moreno striking the post as Liverpool made light of their numerical disadvantage.

But Alan Pardew's side are the only top-flight team without a league win in 2016 and their misery was compounded when Damien Delaney went to ground on Benteke in the fourth minute of added time.

The Belgium international, who has endured plenty of criticism during his debut Anfield season, made no mistake and sent McCarthy the wrong way to move Liverpool up to seventh in the table - six points shy of Manchester City in fourth, who they beat so convincingly in midweek.

An injury to in-form striker Connor Wickham meant a start for Emmanuel Adebayor in the Palace line-up, while Klopp bolstered his defence with the returning duo Mamadou Sakho and Moreno.

Adebayor led the charge for Palace in the opening stages, teeing up Yannick Bolasie for a smothered seventh-minute opportunity before drawing a near-post save from Simon Mignolet and heading Pape Souare's cross against the crossbar.

Some nervous handling by McCarthy from a Liverpool corner almost allowed Divock Origi - retaining his place in the attack despite Daniel Sturridge returning to the visitors' matchday squad - the chance to pounce.

Palace midfielder Yohan Cabaye clipped Wilfried Zaha's pass into the side netting from 25 yards, but the France midfielder was relieved to see Milner's 33rd-minute free-kick deflected over after he clumsily fouled Firmino. The breakthrough came within three minutes of the restart, with Liverpool only partially clearing a Cabaye corner and allowing Ledley to crash home left footed from the edge of the area.

Firmino and Origi had shots blocked as Liverpool looked to respond, but, moments after Klopp made an attacking change by introducing playmaker Philippe Coutinho in place of Flanagan, his side's prospects suffered a further blow.

Milner had been booked for a robust first-half challenge on Cabaye and, having been dispossessed on the edge of the Palace box, he rashly brought down Zaha to leave referee Andre Marriner with a simple decision.

Scott Dann muscled in just in time as Origi waited to convert an Adam Lallana cutback in the 68th minute, but McCarthy did not cover himself in such glory four minutes later when Liverpool equalised with a simple Firmino finish.

The 26-year-old recovered some credit when he twice saved from Benteke, but, after Moreno rattled the upright, the Liverpool striker was allowed to have the final word with his first goal since December - Marriner having deliberated with his assistant before punishing Delaney to Pardew's dismay.

Sassuolo 2-0 Milan: Rossoneri's unbeaten Serie A run ended

    2807302_heroa.jpg

AC Milan suffered their first defeat in 10 Serie A games as Sassuolo picked up a richly deserved 2-0 win at Stadio Mapei on Sunday.

The Rossoneri could have moved to within six points of the third and final Champions League spot with victory, but they fell to a third defeat in as many trips to Sassuolo since the latter's promotion to Serie A in 2013.

Sinisa Mihajlovic made good on a promise to start Mario Balotelli, despite criticising the Italy striker's desire, although the Liverpool loanee looked out of sorts on the right wing and lasted just 55 minutes.

Sassuolo goalkeeper Andrea Consigli was nevertheless kept busy in the first half, as Milan spurned a host of clear-cut chances before Alfred Duncan's screamer put the home side ahead against the run of play.

Having wasted a string of opportunities in the first half, Milan created next to nothing after the interval and Nicola Sansone slammed home a well-worked second to move Eusebio Di Francesco's men just three points behind Milan in their own hunt for continental qualification - Gregoire Defrel's late dismissal doing little to derail an impressive performance.

Milan may well look back and wonder how they lost a game in which they ought to have been out of sight inside the first 10 minutes.

Consigli was on hand to deny Giacomo Bonaventura from 25 yards and Keisuke Honda one-on-one, before Carlos Bacca ignored Balotelli to his right, only to see his shot deflected wide.

Consigli again reacted smartly to keep out Luca Antonelli's looping header and a fizzing effort from Juraj Kucka, but former Inter midfielder Duncan intervened in stunning fashion midway through the half to put Sassuolo ahead.

Domenico Berardi caught the Milan defence cold, swinging a right-wing corner to the edge of the box, where Duncan was racing in to rifle a left-footed blockbuster into the top-right corner.
Gianluigi Donnarumma prevented Berardi from scoring a ninth goal in six games against the Rossoneri, after a weaving run from the left wing by Sansone.

Balotelli's malaise was summed up just before the break as he could only see a left-wing delivery flash across the box ahead of him, and Mihajlovic removed his striker after 10 more listless second-half minutes, in which time Donnarumma had again thwarted the lively Berardi.

Jeremy Menez replaced Balotelli but Sassuolo were well on top by that point and Sansone made sure of the points in the 71st minute. Berardi and Sime Vrsaljko combined smartly on the right to create the goal amid ponderous Milan defending, which enraged Mihajlovic to such an extent he was dismissed.

Defrel was also given his marching orders after hauling down Kucka in midfield, collecting a second caution.

The numerical advantage was hardly noticeable in the closing stages as the Coppa Italia finalists stumbled to a defeat which dents their hopes of a Champions League return.

Atalanta 0-2 Juventus: Barzagli & Lemina keep visitors on top

    2806932_heroa.jpg

Juventus responded in exemplary fashion to the challenge handed down by Napoli as they overpowered Atalanta, winning 2-0 to restore their position as outright Serie A leaders.

Having seen Napoli triumph on Saturday, Juve responded a day later with a 17th victory in their last 18 league matches as Massimiliano Allegri's men hunt their fifth successive title.

Barzagli gave Juv the lead after 23 minutes, turning home a Mario Mandzukic header for his first Serie A goal since May 2012, which also came against Atalanta.

Lemina came off the bench to secure the victory with five minutes to go and another loss extends Atalanta's winless streak to 13 league matches as they slip further towards the relegation zone.

An eighth successive clean sheet for Juve means Gianluigi Buffon is now on the third longest Serie A run without conceding a goal, behind only Sebastiano Rossi (929 minutes) and Dino Zoff (903 minutes).

Claudio Marchisio returned from a thigh injury for Juve, but Giorgio Chiellini's calf problem kept the defender out, while Atalanta were without Alejandro Gomez (hamstring) and Mauricio Pinilla (calf).

The hosts started brightly, but the first chance went to Juve after 10 minutes when a quick break freed Sami Khedira to shoot inside the box, Marco Sportiello saving well at his near post.

Luca Cigarini then miscued a volley straight at Buffon as Atalanta continued to threaten.Paul Pogba curled a long-range strike just over the crossbar after 20 minutes, but the champions scored from their next attack.

Atalanta failed to deal with a simple cross into the box and Barzagli, played onside by the unwitting Marten de Roon, swept in a close-range finish after Mandzukic flicked the ball on.

With Juve looking typically solid at the back, Buffon set a record for the longest period without conceding a goal since three points for a win were introduced in Serie A 22 years ago, the veteran having not been breached in 775 minutes.

Seeking to end that run, Atalanta broke at pace after Marchisio was caught on the ball six minutes before half-time, but De Roon's volley was comfortably saved by Buffon.

A moment of madness by Sportiello almost handed Juve a second goal after 58 minutes, but Mandzukic could not capitalise on the goalkeeper losing possession when attempting an ill-advised dribble.

Mandzukic could have sealed a 12th straight win for Juve Against Atalanta after 68 minutes, his free header flying over the crossbar. With seven minutes to go Rafael Tolio was inches away from turning in an equaliser at the back post, but he could not stretch to get a decisive touch.

Substitute Lemina then secured the points, riding two tackles before smashing a low strike into the bottom corner to seal another win for Allegri's side.

Eibar 0-4 Barcelona: Munir, Messi and Suarez ensure record run continues

    lionelmessi-cropped_t67lv3hj258g1ek9ofc4hbce3.jpg

Lionel Messi's rich vein of scoring form continued as he hit a double to set another La Liga record as leaders Barcelona eased to a comfortable 4-0 win over Eibar at Ipurua.

Messi made it 15 goals in his last 10 outings with a sublime individual breakaway strike after 41 minutes and a second-half penalty following a harsh handball decision against Ivan Ramis.

Luis Enrique selected Munir El Haddadi to fill in for the suspended Neymar and he responded by rounding off a lovely move to put Barca on course for an 11th successive top-flight victory after just eight minutes.

Ramis went close to an equaliser for Eibar, but they were punished on the break by Messi prior to half-time – the Argentine becoming the first player to net 20 Liga goals in eight different seasons.

After the restart, Jose Luis Mendilibar's team, who have now lost seven of their last eight, posed little threat to Barca, with Messi improving on Barca's dreadful record from the penalty spot in La Liga this season – the Catalans have missed seven spot-kicks in the top-flight this term - by adding his second from 12 yards.

Luis Suarez capped Barca's 36th game in all competitions without defeat with the fourth, opening up a temporary 11-point lead at the Liga summit ahead of Atletico Madrid's trip to Valencia later on Sunday.

The absence of Neymar did not hamper the fluidity of Barca's attack, as they took the lead through his replacement with just eight minutes on the clock.

A brilliant pass from Messi released Suarez down the right and the Uruguayan squared the ball to the back post for Munir to convert.Suarez missed a chance of his own two minutes later and Eibar responded positively with Ramis heading narrowly over from Josip Radosevic's cross.

However, Barca dominated possession and, after being refused a penalty when Aleksandar Pantic appeared to block Jordi Alba's cross with his arm, missed a glorious chance to double their lead in the 32nd minute.

Messi dinked a delightful ball in behind the defence for Munir, who put too much power behind his attempt to tee up Suarez for a simple finish and sent it wide.Mendilibar's team again produced a strong reaction, but went into the interval two goals down following a fine solo strike by Messi.

The Argentine was allowed to dribble at the defence and into the box on the counter-attack, creating enough space up against Ander Capa to fire a shot inside the far post.Messi looked set to add to his tally seven minutes after the restart, but a dreadful first touch from Suarez's cutback enabled the Eibar defence to get in a tackle this time.

Chances were few and far between thereafter, but Messi finally got his second in the 76th minute, calmly slotting home from a spot-kick following a handball by Ramis, who was on the floor after attempting to make a sliding block.

There was still time for one more for Luis Enrique's team to add another, as Suarez lashed a low finish beyond Eibar goalkeeper Asier Riesgo with six minutes remaining - the Uruguayan's strike meaning, he, Messi and Neymar have now scored a combined 100 goals this season.

:(West Brom 1-0 Manchester United: Rondon strike downs 10-man Red Devils

    2808822_heroa.jpg

Jose Salomon Rondon scored the only goal of the game as West Brom defeated 10-man Manchester United 1-0, dealing a blow to the visitors' top-four hopes.

United came into the game buoyed by four wins in a row in all competitions, but their task at The Hawthorns was made far tougher when Juan Mata picked up the first Premier League red card of his career with two quick-fire bookings in the first half.

Louis van Gaal's side responded well to that setback and came close to opening the scoring through young Marcus Rashford, as they looked to counter West Brom, who struggled to carve out many meaningful chances despite their advantage.

Yet Tony Pulis' men found their breakthrough midway through the second half thanks to Rondon's clever finish from close range – his fourth goal in six league matches.

Van Gaal's side pushed for an equaliser, but diligent West Brom defending ensured the visitors remain sixth in the table and three points behind Manchester City in fourth, having played a game more.

United, who welcomed back Chris Smalling, Matteo Darmian and Michael Carrick to the starting line-up, started brightly, but Craig Dawson missed the first decent chance when he headed wide following Rondon's teasing cross.

The home side began to look an increasing threat on the break and from set-pieces as United laboured in possession, with belief among the home fans growing further when Mata was sent off for two yellow cards picked up in the space of three minutes – the first for blocking a quick free-kick, the second for a late swing of his left foot to bring down former team-mate Darren Fletcher.

United were forced onto the defensive, but, barring a low drive from Saido Berahino which David de Gea saved comfortably, West Brom were struggling to make their numerical advantage count.
Indeed, it was United who next came closest to breaking the deadlock just after half-time, as Rashford's low shot from the edge of the area deflected narrowly wide of Ben Foster's left-hand post after a strong run from Anthony Martial, before Jesse Lingard clipped the top of the net with a looping drive from 25 yards.

Berahino stabbed substitute Sebastien Pocognoli's cross narrowly over the crossbar, but United failed to heed the warning as the full-back picked out Rondon in space just six yards out and the Venezuelan controlled the ball superbly before drilling low into the corner past De Gea in the 67th minute.

Van Gaal threw on Memphis Depay in hope of a similar comeback to that produced by 10-man Liverpool at Crystal Palace earlier in the day, but West Brom held on for a win that takes them to within a point of the top 10 and leaves United facing an uphill battle to keep pace with the top four.

:(Van Gaal accuses Mata of 'damaging' Manchester United after red card

    2808502_heroa.jpg

Louis van Gaal admits Juan Mata ‘damaged’ Manchester United’s chances of victory in Sunday’s defeat to West Brom before suggesting that the referee should have taken into account the midfielder's character.

The Spaniard was sent off after just 26 minutes at The Hawthorns for two yellow cards - one for preventing a quick free-kick, and the second for a challenge on Darren Fletcher.

It was the first red card of Mata's professional career, but Van Gaal was keen to stress that the midfielder has never intentionally hurt an opponent.

“The first yellow card I think was stupid because you know in advance it’s a yellow card, but the second, you know you already have one yellow card, you have to take into account with the second, it’s difficult. You damage the benefit of the team,” Van Gaal told Sky Sports.

“But the referee also has to know the person who makes the tackle. And Juan Mata has never hurt an opponent.

“I ask him also, how many red cards have you had? None, it’s the first."

When asked if taking Mata’s personality into account is relevant, Van Gaal replied: “No, it’s not relevant, but you have to know the characters of the players, I think.

“And that’s why an experienced referee is always better. And I always think you take that into account.”

Carragher blasts 'stupid' Mata over West Brom red card

    mataredcard-cropped_1ak5aac27cd8b1wi1rpzbr7pi2.jpg

Jamie Carragher has blasted Juan Mata as "stupid" after the midfielder was shown two yellow cards in quick succession in Manchester United's 1-0 defeat to West Brom on Sunday.

The Spain international, 27, was booked in the 24th minute for encroaching on a free-kick and was handed his marching orders just two minutes later for kicking out at Darren Fletcher in a poorly timed tackle.

Salomon Rondon scored the only goal of the game - his fourth in his last six Premier League games - and former defender-turned-pundit Carragher was unimpressed with both United's defending and Mata's first-half meltdown.

He told Sky Sports : "It maybe wasn't a great decision for [Chris] Smalling to step out but [Matteo] Darmian has his back to the ball. He should fill in as Smalling goes out. He's so obsessed with (Stephane) Sessegnon. He should clear, and maybe Daley Blind should be tighter to the ball, but he's not watching the ball!
"It's stupid [from Mata] and you don't normally expect that from him. I can't think what he thinks. He's always going to get a yellow card [for blocking the quick free-kick]. It's so unlike him.

"He knows with the second one. He's trying to pull his leg away as he's halfway through it. You can't help but like Juan Mata."

Klopp: Liverpool bench at Palace the strongest I’ve ever had

    2807402_heroa.jpg

Jurgen Klopp feels he has never had stronger options to call upon off the bench in his managerial career than Liverpool’s reserves in the 2-1 victory over Crystal Palace on Sunday.

Philippe Coutinho, Daniel Sturridge, Nathaniel Clyne, Joe Allen and Christian Benteke - all internationals - were named as substitutes alongside young goalkeeper Danny Ward and veteran defender Kolo Toure.

And following a third consecutive league win, Klopp admitted: “To be honest, I have never had a bench with this quality in 15 years as a manager – this bench was important.

“If you have a bench like this, you know that on the pitch you have a good team, but we needed a good team because Crystal Palace are really difficult to play. We knew it from the first game and now we’ve taken the points back, I think everything is OK.” Benteke came on to force a penalty at the death and secure maximum points for Liverpool while Coutinho and Toure were also introduced at Selhurst Park.

Klopp was pleased with all their contributions and expects the strength in depth to serve the club well as the season enters its closing months.

“A team with aims and big ambitions, you need a strong bench. A strong bench is 100 per cent fit players on the bench in 100 per cent form and shape,” he explained.

“That was a strong bench – the first time we’ve had this. We’ve had a lot of form and shape on the bench, but never fitness because they’ve come back after four and five weeks [after injury]. It’s a good moment and hopefully it stays like this.

“If somebody is angry because he doesn’t start, no problem – show it on the pitch. It’s not possible to come to me and say you haven’t played and I say, ‘Oh, right, it’s my fault – I forgot you’. I never forget a player. I don’t make a problem of it – it’s perfect.
“We need all of these guys – everybody is asking for Christian Benteke when he doesn’t play. If we have another question, somebody will ask about Daniel Sturridge. Always who doesn’t play [is spoken about].

“We have a long run, we have very important games to go and this is the first time we’ve had more players than matches! Usually we have less players than matches in a week, so we should use this situation.

“The boys did well. Phil came on and did great. Christian came on and did great. Kolo in the last few minutes, saved the world for us. That’s cool.

“Hopefully Christian can take this, it was a great moment. It was a penalty, in my opinion, it was enough of a touch – more than enough – and he shot great. Absolutely deserved.”

Luis Enrique remains cool on Barcelona title credentials

    lionelmessi-cropped_mk87ws5xxqs91pqqm520bmw9k.jpg

Luis Enrique is not getting carried away with Barcelona's chances of winning a second successive La Liga title following Sunday's 4-0 win over Eibar.

A pair of goals from Lionel Messi and strikes from Munir El Haddadi and Luis Suarez meant Barca temporarily extended their lead at the Liga summit to 11 points, with Atletico Madrid taking on Valencia later on Sunday.

However, with 10 top-flight matches remaining this season, the coach is eager to remain grounded and ensure his team do not think they have the championship wrapped up ahead of schedule.

"We are where we want to be thanks to the work we have done. The decisive stretch of the season is now being played," said Luis Enrique.

"In La Liga we are very well placed, but there are many points to play for against direct rivals."No one has assurances that we will be at this level in the next game. We are not going to be distracted by being called champions ahead of time.

"It is won when mathematically there are no more points. Until this day, the Liga is not finished."The victory at Ipurua followed a 5-1 thumping of Rayo Vallecano on Thursday, but Luis Enrique enjoyed Sunday's performance more.

"I think we were even better than in Vallecas. We are not afraid to be doing so well. These players do what they enjoy: to compete and to win," he added.
"Everything went well in general. We have been good throughout the match, I have no complaints. If we had been at a lower level, we would have suffered."

Inter 3-1 Palermo: Mancini's men largely untested in routine victory

    2810252_heroa.jpg

Inter put their Coppa Italia heartbreak behind them with a comfortable 3-1 Serie A victory over Palermo at San Siro.

Roberto Mancini's side put in a remarkable performance against Juventus in midweek, running out 3-0 winners to force extra time in their semi-final, only to lose on penalties.

But they went some way to recover from that painful elimination as Adem Ljajic gave them an early lead in glorious fashion, beating two defenders and shooting powerfully into the bottom corner from 25 yards.Inter captain Mauro Icardi made it 2-0 after 23 minutes, stretching in front of the covering defender to convert a superb right-wing cross from Rodrigo Palacio.

Palermo's Franco Vazquez grabbed a goal back shortly before half-time, smashing in a volley, but Inter restored their two-goal cushion after the interval when Ivan Perisic scored a terrific diving header.

Defeat extends Palermo's winless streak to seven Serie A matches and they sit a solitary point above the relegation zone, while Inter's victory consolidates their fifth place.

Mancini made four changes to the side that overcame Juve on Wednesday, while Samir Handanovic remained out with the flu and after a cagey opening the hosts took the lead in the 11th minute.

Perisic fed Ljajic and he jinked away from two defenders before unleashing a terrific low drive across Stefano Sorrentino and into the bottom-left corner, the attacker racing off to celebrate with Mancini. After 20 minutes Vazquez saw Inter goalkeeper Juan Pablo Carrizo off his line and let fly from 30 yards, but Handanovic's stand-in made a comfortable save.

Icardi doubled Inter's lead on their next attack, getting the deftest of touches on Palacio's centre to divert the ball beyond Sorrentino for his fourth goal in six Serie A appearances.Inter were threatening to run riot and Ljajic could have added a third after 26 minutes, cutting inside from the left and slicing his shot wildly off-target.

Palermo had not won at Inter in 27 visits but they almost got a goal back after 34 minutes, Carrizo beating away a fierce strike from Vazquez, before Sorrentino made an equally good save to tip a Perisic shot around the post. And the visitors gave themselves hope on the stroke of half-time when Vazquez volleyed into the roof of the net after a great break down the right by Andrea Rispoli.

Palermo began brightly after the interval, but they could not conjure an equaliser and Inter got back on track for a third successive home victory when Icardi crossed for Perisic to divert a smart diving header into the bottom corner.

Palacio was close to adding a fourth Inter goal after 70 minutes but Sorrentino kept out his bullet header with a fine diving save, then Vazquez saw a volley fly just wide.

With 10 minutes to go Carrizo saved a close-range effort by Vazquez, but Inter were able to hold on in relative comfort to take the points.

Valencia 1-3 Atletico: Torres on target as Neville's men falter

    2810362_heroa.jpg

Substitutes Fernando Torres and Yannick Ferreira Carrasco kept Atletico Madrid's La Liga title hopes alive as they won 3-1 away to Valencia on Sunday.

Gary Neville's side boasted a record of just one defeat in 12 home league meetings with Atletico, but they found themselves behind when Antoine Griezmann's precise strike from distance evaded Diego Alves.

Valencia hit back soon after when Real Madrid loanee Denis Cheryshev finished a fine move to draw the scores level, and the Russian midfielder almost added a second before the break.

Atletico were in desperate need of a win to keep their title hopes alive given Barcelona's victory at Eibar, but Valencia's determination to record just a second home league win in nine led to an end-to-end and often scrappy encounter.

Alves made a superb save to deny Luciano Vietto from point-blank range before Diego Simeone threw on Torres and the fit-again Carrasco in an effort to force a winner, and the former Liverpool man prodded home from close range following a corner.

Carrasco added a third after Valencia were reduced to 10 men when Aderlan Santos was dismissed, meaning Atleti move back to within eight points of Barca and four clear of third-placed Madrid, with just 10 games left to play.

Atletico, who lost Diego Godin from the starting line-up to illness shortly before kick-off, found their rhythm first in a feisty opening quarter, and Griezmann had Alves at full stretch with a bouncing right-footed effort from the edge of the box, before Vietto skied a shot from the resulting corner.

The visitors silenced Mestalla less than two minutes later, as Griezmann collected Koke's lay-off just outside the area before drilling a low shot past Alves and into the bottom-left corner.

But their celebrations proved short-lived. Paco Alcacer's deft header turned Guilherme Siqueira's clipped pass into the path of Cheryshev, who fired beyond Jan Oblak into the far corner from 12 yards.

Valencia were suddenly in the supremacy and Cheryshev shot narrowly over after another brilliant flick-on from captain Alcacer following Sofiane Feghouli's curling long ball.

The game was end-to-end after the break as neither side looked ready to settle for a point, with Alcacer denied at close range by Oblak just moments after Griezmann almost set up Vietto for a simple finish.

Atleti's attacking duo combined again when Griezmann nodded down into Vietto's path, but Alves produced a stunning reaction save to tip the Argentinian's half-volley onto the crossbar.

But Atleti were not to be denied for long as substitute Torres scored just nine minutes after coming on, poking home when completely unmarked at the back post after Jose Gimenez's glancing header.

Valencia could not offer a second response and Carrasco struck the decisive blow shortly after Santos picked up his second booking of the game for bringing down Torres. The Belgian collected Griezmann's pass and skipped into space in the area before firing low past Alves, who failed to get enough on the ball to keep it out.

Torres firepower changed the game - Simeone

    fernando-torres-cropped_omxw3ueqrsr71grbtzhojnl8d.jpg

Diego Simeone praised the impact of Fernando Torres as Atletico Madrid kept their La Liga title hopes alive with a 3-1 win away to Valencia.

The former Liverpool and Chelsea striker scored Atletico's second less than 10 minutes after coming on as a substitute, after Denis Cheryshev had cancelled out Antoine Griezmann's opener at Mestalla.

A burst of pace from Torres on the break then brought about Aderlan Santos' red card after he was given a second yellow for a clumsy foul, before Yannick Ferreira Carrasco struck the third in the closing minutes.

"It was unfair for [Matias] Kranevitter to go off since he was having a great game, but the match needed more firepower going forward, more speed, more of a penalty-box player like Fernando Torres," Simeone said of his crucial second-half changes after the match.

"We're thinking day by day. Of course Fernando came on very well, [but] I'm happy with the team in general."The game started with [Luciano] Vietto, who did some great work. We know Fernando is different, he has speed."

Torres himself insisted Atleti will not concede defeat in the Liga title race, despite Barcelona holding an eight-point advantage over the 2013-14 champions.Simeone, however, claimed that the development of his team has to be considered the most important thing for his players during the final stage of the season.

"The talk we consider to be real is that we have to improve ourselves," he said. "Of course we want to do this every year, but it's not easy to achieve because we have a lot of different players.

"The average age of the team for this game was 24 and it's not easy to play with so many boys. It's not easy to make them believe that the team comes first, ahead of everything else."

Wenger warns Arsenal fans: Your negativity isn't helping the players!

    arsene-wenger_1xvch5no6zq4t1xfbm9ad0l567.jpg

Arsene Wenger has warned Arsenal supporters that negativity from the stands could adversely affect the team's confidence in the title run-in.

The French boss has seen the Gunners fall eight points behind league leaders Leicester and the team can not afford any further major setback with just nine Premier League games remaining.

Wenger was happy his side were able to come from behind to snatch a point in the north London derby on Saturday but admits his players' progression could be stunted should the atmosphere turn again.

“I prefer that the fans are happy but I’m more worried that it can get to the players’ confidence level,” he said. “I feel we have shown a great response as a team that we can deal with that.”

He added: "You can feel sorry for yourself or respond straight away next game – that’s why I think the group is healthy and there’s a good mentality.”

Captain Per Mertesacker echoed his manager's sentiment regarding the players' state of mind, and hit back at those questioning their title credentials."For a team with ‘low confidence’ and ‘no belief’ we played pretty well,” he said.

"I think we have shown great character. We criticise each other enough in the dressing room and we demand a lot more from ourselves than just playing like we do not care. We meet every day and speak a lot with each other. The first 15 minutes were absolutely amazing. I have never played in such a demanding game.
"I think we turned up very aggressively. You could feel the pressure. I think it’s a good start to an interesting end of the season.”

Fletcher denies trying to force Mata red card

    juan-mata-cropped_k4n77k8io9gb1lcl0oj95y71g.jpg

West Brom captain Darren Fletcher insists he did not try to force the referee to send off Juan Mata in his side's 1-0 Premier League win over Manchester United.

The Spain international collected two yellow cards in the space of three minutes for blocking Fletcher's free-kick and then tripping his former team-mate as he attempted to launch a counter-attack.

Fletcher says his appeals to referee Mike Dean were simply done in the heat of the moment and admitted that West Brom struggled to make the most of their advantage until Salomon Rondon struck a crucial second-half winner.

"It was the ref's decision. I tried to play a quick free-kick and got blocked and then tried to start a counter-attack and got tripped. It's the ref's decision," he told Sky Sports.

"I thought we looked flat when they went to 10, we almost didn't know what to do, but the advantage of 11 against 10 seemed to get us through in the end and Salomon's got a fantastic winner.

"I appealed because it's spur of the moment in the game. It's an automatic reaction, you're not looking to get anyone sent off."

Fletcher said he was "desperate" to record a win over United, but says that he is eager for his former employers to recover swiftly and seal a top-four spot.

"When you're playing against your old club you are desperate to win," he added. "You hope United have great success and I hope they bounce back and go on to reach the top four, but my first thought now is West Brom.

"First and foremost it takes us to 39 points, one more from 40 and then we will look to keep going. I thought to a man our team performance all round the pitch was fantastic."

Van Gaal angered by 'unnecessary' Man Utd loss

Louis van Gaal insisted that Manchester United's defeat to West Brom on Sunday was "unnecessary", as the Red Devils lost further ground on the top four.

United suffered a 1-0 loss at the Hawthorns on Sunday, with Salomon Rondon's second-half strike punishing Van Gaal's side, who had Juan Mata sent off in the 26th minute following two yellow cards in quick succession.

The Dutchman felt the red card was the decisive factor in the game and was left angry with his side's disappointing defeat, which leaves them three points behind fourth-placed Manchester City, who have a game in hand on their fierce rivals.
"For us it's a very bad moment, and it was in my opinion an unnecessary loss," Van Gaal told reporters. "I don't want to say that we deserved to win, but we didn't deserve to lose.

"When you see at the end of the game the chances they have created in comparison with us, it was an unnecessary loss.

"When it is a draw and you play 60 minutes with 10 men you can accept it, but now you lose and you lose contact with the first four or five.

"We played 60 minutes with 10 against 11 and that's always difficult, but we were not uncomfortable. We didn't give too many chances away in the second half, were well-organised, but it's difficult to create chances with 10 against 11.

"The [red card] decision was, for us, the turning point in the match."
