Benatia rules out Bayern Munich exit

    medhi-benatia-cropped_10a6ubsnr5p9d1cpeg4snec895.jpg

Bayern Munich defender Medhi Benatia has laughed off suggestions he is set to leave the club at the end of the season.

The Morocco international joined Bayern from Roma in August 2014, but injuries have so far prevented him from making a major impact at the Allianz Arena.Nevertheless, the 28-year-old is adamant he is not thinking about leaving the reigning Bundesliga champions.

"Unfortunately, I have had a lot of injury problems since I came to Germany. Things like that happen in football," Benatia told Almarssad Pro.

"I am not thinking about leaving Bayern Munich any time soon. The rumours suggesting I could leave in light of the arrival of Carlo Ancelotti next season are completely false."I am only thinking about finishing this season with Bayern and winning the Bundesliga and Champions League."

Benatia has made 13 appearances in all competitions for Bayern this campaign, scoring once in the process. His contract with the Bavarians runs until June 2019.

    If I don’t score for Arsenal, I can’t sleep – Alexis

    2800172_heroa.jpg

Alexis Sanchez has revealed that if he does not find the net for Arsenal, it gives him sleepless nights.

The Chile international star has struggled for form in recent times as the Gunners’ challenge for the Premier League title has stuttered, but broke a barren spell in front of goal by finding the net in last weekend’s derby draw with Tottenham.

It was a strike that will help the 27-year-old rest easier.

“When I don't score goals I feel like I've failed the team and I feel guilty,” he admitted to his club’s official website.

“I go home, can't sleep and I just think I have to play better.”

The former Barcelona player wants to continue in this vein as Arsene Wenger’s side seek a first English crown in over a decade.

“I always want to improve and give my absolute all to the team,” he added.

Arsenal lie eight points shy of leaders Leicester with nine games of the campaign remaining.

Real Madrid are lacking consistency, admits Ronaldo

    2820942_heroa.jpg

Cristiano Ronaldo admits Real Madrid still lack the consistency required to win the Champions League this season.

Zinedine Zidane’s men have made it to the quarter-final stage following a 4-0 aggregate win over Roma, although the Serie A side squandered plenty of chances at the Santiago Bernabeu to secure an away goal.

The Champions League arguably represents Madrid’s best hope of winning a trophy this season as the club are 12 points behind Barcelona in La Liga, but Ronaldo insists his side need to improve.

"We're still lacking a few things," said the Portugal international.

"We're lacking consistency, a bit of luck, a bit of ambition but if we keep going like this we're on the right track now."

Thierry Henry passes Uefa A Licence

    1344282_heroa.jpg

Former Arsenal striker Thierry Henry has moved a step closer to a potential future career in football management after confirming he has passed his Uefa A Licence coaching badge.

The Uefa A License is the highest practical coaching award and is the final qualification needed before undertaking the Pro Licence, which is mandatory for coaching in the Premier League and Champions League.

Henry can now manage professionally, below Premier League level, or work at an academy as he has been doing at Arsenal whilst working for his badges.

The Frenchman confirmed he had acquired the qualification via Instagram, writing: "Massive thank you to Osian Roberts #Osh, @welshfootballtrust and the Arsenal Academy for assisting me to pass my UEFA A Licence coaching badge. #proudday."

Ibrahimovic has decided his next move, claims Raiola

    zlatanibrahimovic-cropped_hiov0n0b64s51rnues7e17828.jpg

Zlatan Ibrahimovic knows where he wants to play next season, according to his agent Mino Raiola.

The Sweden striker played a starring role as Paris-Saint Germain won 2-1 at Chelsea on Wednesday to complete a 4-2 aggregate victory and secure a place in the Champions League quarter-finals.

Ibrahimovic insisted after the game that he is not in discussions with any club, with his contract set to expire at the end of the season, but said that he had not "closed the door on anyone" amid reports of interest from the Premier League and Major League Soccer.

However, Raiola claims the 34-year-old has already made up his mind, though he did not reveal his client's preference.

Raiola told Swedish newspaper Expressen: "We know what we want but we will not say anything until the summer when the season is over. But we are clear now what we want to happen."

Addressing the rumours in the English papers linking the former Barcelona striker with Manchester United, Raiola added: "They shoot from the hip and hope that something will hit the mark."

Shakhtar Donetsk 3-1 Anderlecht: Ukrainians seize first-leg initiative

    2830122_heroa.jpg

Eduardo's late header handed Shakhtar Donetsk a healthy first-leg advantage as they beat Anderlecht 3-1 in the last 16 of the Europa League.

Taison and Olexandr Kucher hit Besnik Hasi's side with a quick-fire first-half double to put the Ukrainians in control at the Lviv Arena but Frank Acheampong's 68th-minute goal threatened to put a very different complexion on things.

However, under-fire Anderlecht boss Hasi – whose side are enduring an underwhelming domestic campaign – saw his team's chances of progressing to the quarter-finals drastically reduced when Eduardo powered a header past Silvio Proto, who was impressive despite conceding three times.

Proto was busy throughout and his saves kept Anderlecht in the tie, though they still have a mountain to climb on home soil after seeing a last-gasp goal ruled out for a handball from Kara Mbodji.

The visitors should have taken an eighth-minute lead when Acheampong was presented with a chance inside the box at the end of a rapid counter-attack but, after initially outmuscling his man, the Ghanaian dallied and his effort was blocked.

After a solid start, however, the Belgian side conceded twice in three minutes as their defence went to pieces.

First a careless piece of play from Andy Najar led to Taison steering a close-range effort beyond Proto after the goalkeeper had done well to deny Vitkor Kovalenko in the 21st minute. Then Darijo Srna's swinging cross was nodded in by Kucher – his first goal in 76 European outings – just a few seconds after Mbodji had slipped while in possession 20 yards from his own goal.

It was threatening to get ugly for Hasi and he was grateful to Proto for producing a fine stop from Facundo Ferreyra's powerful drive just before the half-hour mark.

The woodwork was next to come to Anderlecht's rescue as Eduardo took Proto out of the equation but flashed his shot from a tight angle against the post.

Mircea Lucescu's men were given a timely reminder that they could not afford rest on their laurels early in the second half as Andriy Pyatov tipped wide Steven Defour's low strike.

It was a warning that went unheeded, though, as Acheampong's close-range header from substitute Ibrahima Conte's cross reduced the arrears.

That sparked the hosts into life and Eduardo's bullet header from Bernard's 79th-minute corner ensured that Shakhtar will travel west with a two-goal cushion, as Mbodji's blatant handball saw his goal chalked off four minutes from the end.

FC Basel 0-0 Sevilla: Vaclik sparkles in Switzerland stalemate

    steven-nzonzi-basel-sevilla-europa-league-10032016_1eaw8qtg9lt4p14u355yyiu3w6.jpg

Tomas Vaclik produced a number of key saves to help Basel earn a 0-0 draw with 10-man Sevilla in the first leg of their Europa League last-16 tie at St. Jakob-Park.

Vaclik showed excellent reflexes to keep out fine second-half efforts from Steven N'Zonzi and Kevin Gameiro and deny the holders what would have been a crucial away goal in a very even affair.

Basel also had chances to take a lead to Sevilla in the return leg next week, with Marc Janko spurning a guilt-edged header after seven minutes before Renato Steffen hit the post after the break.

Sevilla, who were much better going forward after the interval, found themselves hanging on towards the end after N'Zonzi was sent off for picking up a second yellow card in the 87th minute.

Having won their last 15 matches in all competitions at Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan Stadium, Sevilla will now fancy their chances of completing the job in Spain next week. For Basel, the chances of pulling off a shock now look slim, but they will hope the return from suspension of young striker Breel Embolo might inspire them in Seville.

Striker Janko missed a golden opportunity to put Basel ahead when Steffen's cross found him unmarked in the box after six minutes, but the Austrian powered his header wide.

Icelandic midfielder Birkir Bjarnason beat the Sevilla offside trap and had the goal at his mercy moments later, but his first touch let him down and visiting goalkeeper David Soria gratefully gathered the ball.

Veteran Basel defender Walter Samuel ruled himself out of the second leg when he picked up a booking for hauling down Michael Krohn-Dehli, but Sevilla offered little by way of attacking threat in the first half.Despite a vociferous crowd creating a great atmosphere, neither side seemed keen to gamble by committing men forward and a cagey first half ended goalless.

Basel's best chance of the game fell to Bjarnason, who had the whole goal to aim at when Steffen's shot rebounded to him off the post in the box, but he blazed his effort high and wide.At the other end, N'Zonzi brought the best out of Vaclik when he hit a fierce shot from close range which the Czech goalkeeper spread to save.

In the closing stages, Matias Delgado found space to hit a well-struck shot towards goal from 20 yards, but it flew over before N'Zonzi was given his marching orders for picking up a second booking on the night.

Borussia Dortmund 3-0 Tottenham: Reus & Aubameyang put Spurs to the sword

    2830162_heroa.jpg

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Marco Reus put Tottenham to the sword in the first leg of their Europa League last-16 tie, running out 3-0 winners to effectively eliminate Mauricio Pochettino's men.

Both sides sit second and five points off the top in their respective leagues, but Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino controversially opted to make seven changes to his team and paid the price in Germany.

Aubameyang headed in his 33rd goal in 38 appearances this season in the first half, before a clinical double from Reus after the break put Thomas Tuchel's men in a dominant position.

Gonzalo Castro hit the post prior to Reus' strikes in a match that could have been even worse for Spurs, who lacked any serious attacking threat without Harry Kane in the starting line-up and now know their continental hopes are all but over this season.

Spurs' only attempt on target in the first half came in the opening minute, with Christian Eriksen's long-range strike testing Roman Weidenfeller, one of two players to come into the hosts' team.

The other, Castro, fired over from Reus' knockdown in response, before Erik Durm shot wide on the stretch in a decent opening created by Aubameyang.

Aubameyang was causing problems and he volleyed just over after an exchange of passes with Marcel Schmelzer and then had a goal ruled out.

Spurs goalkeeper Hugo Lloris made a superb save to keep out a left-footed thunderbolt from Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Aubameyang converted the rebound, only to be rightly flagged for offside.

The Gabon international was not to be denied on 30 minutes, though. Dortmund worked an opening on the left when Castro fed Schmelzer and the full-back's sweeping cross was firmly headed into the bottom corner by Aubameyang from eight yards out.

Dortmund came close to a second early in the second half when Aubameyang latched on to Mkhitaryan's pass. The striker's attempted chip over Lloris was drifting wide until Castro intervened, but he could only hit the foot of the post from a tight angle.

Son Heung-min then went down under pressure from Sven Bender in the box at the other end in a rare foray forward for Spurs, but referee Cuneyt Cakir was unmoved and the home side then doubled their lead after 61 minutes.

A cleverly worked corner led to Castro's cross being headed on by substitute Neven Subotic and Reus finished emphatically, smashing a shot into the roof of the net from a yard out at the far post.

And nine minutes later it was three. Aubameyang found Castro, who in turn chipped through a pass for Reus in the penalty area to confidently side-foot past Lloris.

Son's effort was kept out by Weidenfeller and Kane was finally brought off the substitutes' bench with 14 minutes remaining, but there was to be no vital away goal on a miserable outing for Pochettino's men.

:(Liverpool 2-0 Manchester United: Sturridge and Firmino put Reds in charge

    2830362_heroa.jpg

Liverpool claimed a 2-0 advantage over rivals Manchester United in the first leg of their Europa League last-16 tie, with Louis van Gaal's visitors indebted to goalkeeper David de Gea for preventing a heavier loss at Anfield.

Daniel Sturridge converted a 20th-minute penalty after Memphis Depay was adjudged to have fouled Nathaniel Clyne and the industrious Roberto Firmino added a second 17 minutes from time.

Jurgen Klopp's maiden managerial victory in a fixture he referred to as "the mother of all games" and Liverpool's first win over United in five attempts would have been by a greater margin but for De Gea, who came out on top as Philippe Coutinho and Sturridge lacked conviction from close range.

Coutinho then prompted further acrobatics from De Gea, although the Spain international was helpless when Firmino netted Adam Lallana's cutback to score for a third consecutive match.

As both sides sit outside the Premier League's top four, the Europa League provides a valuable alternative route into next season's Champions League, and it is United who find themselves woefully off course after this famous fixture hit the European stage for the first time.

United might have stuck after 16 seconds but Marcus Rashford could not adjust his footing when Depay's cross evaded Alberto Moreno and struck the teenage forward on the knee.

Referee Carlos Velasco Carballo entered the contest with a reputation as a strict disciplinarian, due to 74 yellow cards and six reds in his past 12 matches, and Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson earned a second-minute booking for a challenge on Morgan Schneiderlin.

The Spanish official punished a grappling Depay for finding himself the wrong side of Clyne just inside the area in the 19th minute and Sturridge - back in the side for the first time since Liverpool's penalty shoot-out loss to Manchester City in the League Cup final – made no mistake from the spot.

De Gea guessed correctly, but was unable to keep the kick out and the United goalkeeper excelled himself by denying Coutinho and Sturridge at close quarters – the latter opportunity coming as Chris Smalling woefully missed a defensive header.

And De Gea added to his fine catalogue of work when Lallana volleyed Firmino's right-wing cross goalwards at the near post, three minutes before a half-time whistle United needed more than their hosts.

Rashford, largely ineffective in a right-sided attacking role, was replaced by Michael Carrick at the break as Van Gaal switched to a back three and United applied pressure after the restart.

But De Gea was called upon once more in the 53rd minute as Coutinho teed himself up to lash a 25-yard strike towards the top corner when the United No.1's fingertips intervened.

Clyne drew a punched save from De Gea before the latter watched Henderson slash wastefully over.

But United's early second-half verve had all but vanished by the time Carrick botched a clearance from Henderson's cross, sending the ball into Lallana's path.

The former Southampton man then found Firmino who smashed home from close range and Van Gaal's subsequent introduction of Ander Herrera and Bastian Schweinsteiger felt like too little, too late.

Marouane Fellaini, who pushed his luck more than most after entering Carballo's book, including an apparent late elbow on Emre Can, sent an 85th-minute header wide, but United will need to complete a stunning turnaround at Old Trafford next week.

Griezmann not interested in PSG move: I do not want to leave Atletico Madrid

    2761632_heroa.jpg

Antoine Griezmann has once again asserted that he does not want to leave Atletico Madrid and says a return to France to play for Paris Saint-Germain is not something he is thinking about.

The France international has been repeatedly linked with a move away from Diego Simeone’s side with Chelsea believed to be keen on signing the 24-year-old.

However, Griezmann insists he is focussed on winning trophies with Atleti and has no intention of leaving the Vicente Calderon any time soon.

"My goals are to try to go as far as possible in the Champions League and then win the European Championship. I do not want to leave," he told RMC.

"On a personal level, I will try to do better than last year in terms of goals. I hope to exceed the number 24. I am confident and more and more complete as a player."

Griezmann was also asked about the possibility of returning to his home country to play for Ligue 1 giants PSG, but the in-form forward says it is not something he is considering.

"You never know in football, but a return to France is not a topic at all," he added.

"He [Simeone] asks a lot of the players, a lot of intensity in training. Thanks to him, I finish matches feeling better physically and I also improved myself tactically.”

"In La Liga, our goal is to finish in the top three but Barcelona are in extraordinary form. In the Champions League, we want to reach the quarter-finals."
