Vidic ready to manage in England

    vidic-cropped_mlp6inn1pas71ocltrq45b9vd.jpg

Nemanja Vidic wants to manage in England and says he is one of many former players who dream of taking charge at Manchester United.

The 34-year-old retired as a player in January after an injury-interrupted spell with Inter, who he joined from the Premier League side in 2014 after eight and a half years at Old Trafford.

Vidic reveals he has planned for a career in management for some time and is setting his sights on landing a job in England."I started doing my badges four years ago," he told BBC Sport. "At the time I was playing for Manchester United and working with probably the best manager ever in Sir Alex Ferguson.

"He asked a lot from his players, but he believed in them. If he said something, I could see it in his eyes that he believed it. Even when I might not believe, he did. It was his greatest strength.

"It [management] is something I think I can do well. I would like to try to be a manager in English football."

Asked if that meant the United job, Vidic responded: "It is a dream. If you ask any United player if they want to be manager one day, they will say 'yes', but I am a long way from that."The former Serbia international claims he received playing enquiries from MLS clubs in the United States and an approach from England after leaving Inter, but does not doubt his decision to quit.

"It was the right time," added Vidic. "I didn't think I could give 100 per cent.
"It was better not to push, play longer and make myself even more hurt. England was the best years of my career and [I did not want to return] not performing in the same way I did for United."

Kluivert: I dream of managing Barcelona

Patrick Kluivert has revealed that he dreams of managing Barcelona as he continues his fledgling coaching career.

The 39-year-old, who spent six years at Camp Nou between 1998 and 2004, scoring 109 goals, is currently in charge of Concacaf nation Curacao, having previously served as Louis van Gaal’s assistant within the Netherlands set-up.

However, Kluivert says that he does not plan on managing at international level for the entirety of his career, and expects to move into club management soon, with Barcelona his intended destination.
"My ambition is very high," the 39-year-old told Omnisport. "I'm really looking forward to coaching a good club - that's my ambition and I'm looking forward to getting the opportunity to show what I can do.

"It's frustrating to wait because my hands are itching to do something nice with a good club, but I think I can work quite well with players and make them better and do good things for the club that I will coach in the future.

"Of course my ambition is to be the coach of Barcelona. That's a big step from now, but never say never. That's my aim, to be the coach of a big club in Europe and I hope in five years I can be the coach of one of those clubs."

Juventus dismiss Pogba to PSG rumours

    paul-pogba-cropped_4c14nbbp96eb14b8qci20n9tr.jpg

Juventus general director Giuseppe Marotta has laughed off suggestions that Paul Pogba has held talks with Paris Saint-Germain over a summer move.

The France international recently travelled to Paris for a sponsorship event, with a number of reports claiming he also met with a PSG delegation to discuss a potential transfer.

Nevertheless, Marotta remains unperturbed by such suggestions and is confident Pogba will stay at Juventus for the foreseeable future.

"We are not aware of any meeting between Paul and PSG," Marotta told Mediaset.

"Paul was in Paris last week for an event with one of his sponsors.

"He still has a contract with Juventus for several more years, so there is no temptation whatsoever from other clubs."

PSG are not the only club to have been credited with an interest in Pogba, with his former employers Manchester United, along with Manchester City, Chelsea, Barcelona, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich also believed to be keeping a close eye on his situation in Turin.

The 23-year-old's existing contract with Juventus runs until June 2019.

    Robben withdraws from Netherlands squad

    arjen-robben-cropped_uic3luuimiik1cwd74mlpp5ix.jpg

Bayern Munich attacker Arjen Robben has withdrawn from the Netherlands squad for the upcoming friendlies against France and England due to a thigh injury.

The 32-year-old missed Bayern's 5-0 Bundesliga win over Werder Bremen at the weekend and also sat out Wednesday's 4-2 Champions League victory versus Juventus.

It is as yet unclear how long Robben will be out of action, but the former Real Madrid winger has decided to pull out of the national squad as a precautionary measure.

Robben has won 88 caps for Netherlands since making his debut in April 2003, scoring 30 goals in the process.

The Bayern attacker was one of 28 names to have made national team coach Danny Blind's provisional squad, with the Netherlands boss due to announce his final squad on Friday.

Netherlands host France on March 25, before taking on England four days later.

Messi: More to Barcelona than MSN

    lionel-messi-cropped_15ze9h5eff641u282ia6biau4.jpg

Lionel Messi has stressed there is more to Barcelona than the MSN attacking trident he forms with Luis Suarez and Neymar as they attempt to clinch another treble.Barcelona's prolific trio have been key to their recent successes, with MSN helping the Catalans to the treble last season with 122 goals in all competitions.

Messi, Suarez and Neymar have been equally sublime in 2015-16, with all three were on target in the 3-1 win over Arsenal on Wednesday that sealed a Champions League quarter-final place. But the Argentine attacker has stressed Barcelona function as a unit and are not over-reliant on their forward line.

"Barcelona do not depend on MSN," Messi told reporters. "We have a great squad and there is much more to Barcelona than just the three attackers. We have some amazing players.

"Neymar? Brazilian players are always a bit different. They have a lot of quality and it is great to be on the pitch with them, first with Ronaldinho and now with Neymar."

Barcelona, who top La Liga with an eight-point lead, are on a 38-game unbeaten run in all competitions, breaking Real Madrid's previous undefeated record of 34 matches.

Nevertheless, Messi is adamant all he cares about is winning silverware as Luis Enrique's men chase another treble.

"Records are not important to us. All that matters to us is winning titles. We always want to win more. If we break records on our way to winning titles, that's obviously nice," he added.

"The good atmosphere in the squad is the key to our success. We have players who have already won it all, but are still as enthusiastic as at the start of their careers. That's very important as well."The good atmosphere and the desire to keep winning more things are key. My goal is always to win everything I can win, both with Barcelona and Argentina.

"We are not writing off anyone in La Liga. We are only thinking about ourselves. Every game we win is game fewer until the end."The treble? We are taking things one step at a time. Our goal is to challenge for all trophies and we are doing just that at the moment.

"All teams that are still in the Champions League are difficult opponents. It will be complicated. I am only thinking about football. Everything else is less important."
Messi also briefly touched on his future and once more stressed that he will only leave Barcelona for his boyhood club Newell's Old Boys in Argentina."There is no chance that I will play for another team than Barcelona that is not Newell's," the Rosario native concluded.

Lazio 0-3 Sparta Prague (agg 1-4): Biancoceleste suffer crushing home humiliation

    2866442_heroa.jpg

Lazio crashed out of the Europa League after they suffered a shocking 3-0 home defeat at the hands of Sparta Prague on Thursday.

Stefano Pioli's men held a slender advantage after drawing the first leg 1-1 but had no answer to their visitors at the Olimpico as they were eventually swept aside 4-1 on aggregate.

Borek Dockal and Ladislav Krejci struck for the Czechs in two devastating minutes in the first half to put the visitors in the driver's seat, as the home support looked upon in disbelief.

Any hope of a comeback was crushed when Lukas Julis volleyed in Martin Frydek's cross to complete the rout and send Sparta through to the quarter-finals.

Lazio unsurprisingly dominated play after the interval in their quest for a remarkable turnaround, but never looked like erasing Sparta's advantage as Zdenek Scasny's men eased into the last eight.

Antonio Candreva went close to opening the scoring for Lazio in the first minute when he pounced on an early defensive lapse from the visitors, only to see his low near-post drive kept out by David Bicik in the Sparta goal.

But Lazio then fell behind as they were punished for failing to clear their lines from a delivery into the box, Krejci knocking the ball back for Dockal to power home despite Federico Marchetti getting a hand to the shot.

Just two minutes later and it was Krejci supplying the finish as he coolly slotted into the bottom-left corner following good work down the right from Julis.

Needing three goals to turn the tie around, Lazio responded and saw Miroslav Klose hit over from a corner before Bicik denied Stefano Mauri after Candreva had broken free down the right.Candreva had a low drive from long distance turned behind by Bicik, but Lazio were made to pay for not taking advantage of their period of dominance just before half-time.

Frydek dug out a cross from the left-hand side, with Julis doing enough to hold off Milan Bisevac and hook the ball into the net on the volley, increasing the magnitude of the task facing Lazio.Mauri was again thwarted by Bicik six minutes after the restart as Lazio sought a route back into the tie, with Klose then deflecting Candreva's long-range strike wide.

Lazio were unable to test Bicik again, their last prospect of silverware this season disappearing, while Sparta kept hopes of a first major European trophy intact.

Bayer Leverkusen 0-0 Villarreal (agg 0-2): Spaniards through in draw

    bayer-leverkusen-villareal-europa-league-03172016_1x5qlviqcndfs1j4gbxj2oyn99.jpg

Villarreal booked their place in the quarter-finals of the Europa League after a 0-0 draw in the second leg of their last-16 affair against Bayer Leverkusen saw them advance through 2-0 on aggregate.

Marcelino's side travelled to the BayArena for Thursday's second leg with a two-goal lead thanks to Cedric Bakambu's double in the first contest at El Madrigal.
And a resolute Villarreal rear guard protected that advantage brilliantly to frustrate a Leverkusen side that failed to show a clinical edge in front of goal.

The visitors were happy to sit back and allow Leverkusen possession in the first half, while Villarreal midfielder Denis Suarez missed a great opportunity.Marlon Frey fired over in the penalty area on the stroke of half-time before Kyriakos Papadopoulos hit the crossbar early in the second half.

Leverkusen continued to control possession in the second period, but Villarreal almost caught the hosts cold with Bakambu, Roberto Soldado and Manu Trigueros going close, the latter seeing a stoppage-time effort hacked off the line.
Those missed chances mattered little, though, as Villarreal saw out the match to put their name in the draw for the last eight.

The opening 20 minutes proved a war of attrition with Leverkusen probing, but Sergio Asenjo - playing his first match in 11 months due to a serious knee injury - was untested in the Villarreal goal.Hakan Calhanoglu saw tentative penalty appeals waved away by referee Willie Collum after claiming he was unfairly felled by Asenjo.

Leverkusen continued to put pressure on the visitors' defence and Javier Hernandez went agonisingly close to meeting Karim Bellarabi's dangerous right-wing cross.

The hosts were almost undone on the counter-attack when Soldado broke free and found Suarez in the area, but his first touch was heavy and Bernd Leno was out quick to make the save.Leverkusen had chances either side of half-time to make the breakthrough. First, Frey blazed over from close range when the ball fell kindly to him from a Calhanoglu corner, before Christoph Kramer curled wide of the far post from the left of the area.Roger Schmidt's men went even closer in the 54th minute when Papadopoulos headed Calhanoglu's corner into the ground and saw the ball bounce agonisingly off the bar.

Leverkusen's desire to commit men forward left them exposed to the counter and Bakambu perhaps should have done better when he drilled wide after Suarez's cross deflected into his path off Jonathan Tah.Leno then came to the hosts' rescue with a brilliant one-handed save from Soldado's point-blank header.

Calhanoglu brought the best out of Asenjo with a well-hit low drive in the closing stages as Leverkusen continued to be frustrated, and Trigueros was only denied a winner for Villarreal in injury time by Andre Ramalho's incredible block on the line.

Valencia 2-1 Athletic Bilbao (agg 2-2): Aduriz seals away goal victory

    aritzaduriz-cropped_1jgeij0xpqvc01a6c5140yycci.jpg

Athletic Bilbao edged into the last eight of the Europa League on away goals at the expense of Valencia, thanks to top scorer Aritz Aduriz, despite a 2-1 defeat at the Mestalla.

Having won last week's first leg 1-0 at San Mames, Athletic found themselves 2-0 down and staring elimination in the face with 14 minutes to go on Thursday.
But Aduriz's eighth goal of this year's competition made the difference, with Valencia head coach Gary Neville subsequently sent to the stands for furiously protesting against a handball in the build-up.

Athletic came into Thursday's meeting at Mestalla having won 3-0 in the league on the same ground at the end of February, but Valencia were vastly improved and found themselves two up at the break.

Santi Mina opened the scoring in the 13th minute when he was quickest to react to a rebound inside the area from Iago Herrerin's save, before Aderlan Santos' towering header put the home side in front on aggregate.

Valencia appeared to be closing out the victory to seal their place in Friday's quarter-final draw in Nyon, until Raul Garcia's superb flick set up Aduriz, who made no mistake in slotting home to see Athletic through.

Aduriz had threatened to add to his tally as early as the eighth minute, but he could only shoot straight at Mathew Ryan.

Valencia broke the deadlock and levelled the tie five minutes later as Alvaro Negredo's powerful shot was parried by Herrerin into the path of Mina, who converted from close range.

Athletic's hopes were dealt a further blow midway through the first half when influential playmaker and captain Iker Muniain had to come off with what appeared to be a groin injury and was replaced by Markel Susaeta. The visitors' woe was then deepened as Santos rose to meet Jose Gaya's cross and power a superb header into the top-right corner to give Valencia an aggregate lead.

Andre Gomes whistled a volley agonisingly wide as Valencia went in search of a third before the break, although Ryan had to be alert to deny efforts from Susaeta and Aymeric Laporte.Following a quiet start to the second period, Gaya lifted his shot over the crossbar when well placed, and that miss proved costly as Aduriz made his telling contribution.

Play was allowed to continue despite Susaeta appearing to handle the ball and Garcia - whose first-half booking rules him out of the next match - improvised superbly to flick the ball over the head of his marker into the path of Aduriz, who calmly converted.

Neville was dismissed for his protestations, and he could only look on as Herrerin made a stunning late save from substitute Paco Alcacer and Dani Parejo bent a stoppage-time free-kick wide to ensure Athletic's place in the quarter-finals.

:(Manchester United 1-1 Liverpool: Coutinho magic ensures Reds' progress

    2867512_heroa.jpg

Philippe Coutinho's superb individual goal ensured Liverpool progressed to the quarter-finals of the Europa League at the expense of Manchester United after a 1-1 draw at Old Trafford.

Jurgen Klopp's team claimed a dominant 2-0 win at Anfield a week ago but United were much improved from that lacklustre showing and sparked hopes of a turnaround when the impressive Anthony Martial won and netted a 32nd-minute penalty.

Visiting striker Daniel Sturridge struck the crossbar before Coutinho extinguished United's ambitions of a comeback with an exquisite solo goal on the stroke of half-time.

Louis van Gaal's team were criticised for their lack of creativity in the opening game but despite creating chances on this occasion, they were regularly wasteful inside the area.

Klopp can now look forward to the last eight and the possibility of a meeting with his former club Borussia Dortmund, while Van Gaal will begin to attempt to salvage something from a forgettable United campaign in Sunday's Premier League derby at Manchester City.

Liverpool goalkeeper Simon Mignolet made up for his own indecision under Marcos Rojo's left-wing cross with a stunning reaction save from Jesse Lingard's header and, by the time Juan Mata dragged a 19th-minute volley wide, United had already shown more attacking threat than they did at Anfield.

Martial cut in from the left to fire over, while Liverpool were largely operating on the counter-attack – an approach almost rewarded when David de Gea got down superbly to keep Coutinho's drive out of his bottom-left corner.

There was an unfortunate role-reversal for Nathaniel Clyne, who won Liverpool's penalty at Anfield last week.

The England full-back was undone by the quicksilver Martial and brought down his man, who promptly steered home from 12 yards.

Daniel Sturridge curled an angled free-kick against the crossbar and Jordan Henderson blazed over as Liverpool sought an equaliser on the night, but United should have levelled the tie two minutes before half-time.

Marouane Fellaini touched Daley Blind's long ball back across the six-yard box for Rojo to shoot narrowly wide with Mamadou Sakho in close attendance.

It would prove to be a costly miss as Coutinho closed the half in dazzling fashion, shimmying beyond Guillermo Varela and guiding a nonchalant chip over De Gea at his near post.

Van Gaal appeared to punish Varela for his part in the goal by sending Antonio Valencia on in place of the Uruguayan youngster for the second period.

Michael Carrick was quietly influential and orchestrated a move which ended with Sakho making a last-ditch challenge on Marcus Rashford before the teenage striker skewed wide on the turn.

Fellaini, booked earlier for his regular offence of catching an opponent with a flailing arm, headed straight at Mignolet from Carrick's cross as the game passed the hour mark.

A wild Sturridge finish did not match the majestic Coutinho dribble that set up the shot and the Liverpool striker was nonplussed when he made way for Divock Origi in the 68th minute.

Martial and Fellaini failed to make Mignolet work with opportunities either side of that change.

United appeared sapped of energy as the clock ticked down and De Gea was at full stretch to deny Coutinho his second goal in a match where the Brazilian's contribution will be long remembered.

Tottenham 1-2 Borussia Dortmund (agg 1-5): Aubameyang & Co. coast into quarter-finals

    2867462_heroa.jpg

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored twice as Borussia Dortmund eased into the Europa League quarter-finals with an aggregate 5-1 win over Tottenham.

The striker ended any slender hopes Spurs had of overhauling a 3-0 deficit from the first leg when he beat Hugo Lloris from long range in the 24th minute.

Aubameyang took his tally for the season to 35 with a second goal in the 70th minute, with Lloris failing to keep out a powerful drive that deflected into the net off the Frenchman's right arm.

Neven Subotic's weak back pass allowed Son Heung-min score, although his effort was no more than a consolation for a Tottenham side who were thoroughly outplayed over the two legs.

Mauricio Pochettino's side can now solely focus on their bid to win the Premier League title after suffering their first home loss in Europe in 10 outings.

The Tottenham manager - who said prior to the game he wanted his team to show the defeat in Germany was an "accident" – left Harry Kane on the bench, while midfield duo Mousa Dembele and Christian Eriksen were missing from the squad entirely.

The hosts lost Ben Davies inside 13 minutes, as the left-back had to be taken off with a head injury following a collision with team-mate Lloris.

Tottenham just began to pose a threat when Dortmund broke the deadlock.

Given time and space to turn just outside the area, Aubameyang let fly with a right-footed effort that kept on moving away from the diving Lloris to find the net.

The striker could have had a second before the break. A slip by Kevin Wimmer gifted him possession, yet he dallied too long when clean through, allowing Toby Alderweireld to get back and make a crucial tackle.

The Belgian defender also produced a key block to deny Henrikh Mkhitaryan in first-half stoppage time.

Tottenham's only real chance of note in the first 45 minutes fell to Son, but he failed to even hit the target when played in on goal by Erik Lamela's pass.

Aubameyang was guilty of wasting a glorious chance to add to Dortmund's tally soon after the interval, blazing wide with his left foot after racing clear of the defence.

However, he did get his second of the night when he provided the finish to Mkhitaryan's pass, meaning he has now scored nine times in the competition during a campaign that started at the third qualifying round.

Visiting manager Thomas Tuchel would have been disappointed to concede late on, with Son making the most of Subotic's accidental assist to round goalkeeper Roman Weidenfeller and score.

Still, it was one of the few times Dortmund put a foot wrong over 180 minutes of dominance.

Sevilla 3-0 Basel (agg 3-0): Gameiro goals help holders march on

    2867312_heroa.jpg

Kevin Gameiro was at the double on Thursday as Sevilla downed Basel 3-0 in the Europa League to advance to the quarter-finals of the competition.

The holders inched closer to the successful defence of their prize as they successfully dismantled their Swiss opponents after a first leg that finished 0-0.

Adil Rami got the scoring underway for Unai Emery's men when the defender met Jose Antonio Reyes' corner with a glancing header.

It was then Gameiro's turn to shine, with the French forward's goals coming in quick succession right before the break to ensure a straightforward path to the last eight.

The result extended Sevilla's sequence of Europa League home wins to 11 – the longest in the competition's history – and the Andalusians have won 17 straight games in all competitions at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan. The ground has become one of European football's fortresses in the 2015-16 season, and few teams left in the competition will fancy their chances of getting a result in Andalucia in the quarter-finals.

Basel's exit from the competition means they miss out on the chance to play a European final on home turf; the Europa League final will be played at their St Jakob-Park on May 18.

The returning Reyes was heavily involved from the outset, linking up with Michael Krohn-Dehli to create the first chance for Gameiro, whose close-range shot drew a reflex save from Tomas Vaclik.

Sevilla's fast breaks and intricate passing had Basel on the ropes, and only a timely interception by Daniel Hoegh stopped Vicente Iborra from turning Gameiro's low cross into the net.The home side drew first blood in the tie when Rami stooped to head a Reyes corner in off the post, but Sevilla only held the lead thanks to a world-class save from goalkeeper David Soria that prevented an Iborra own goal.

The match then slipped out of Basel's reach inside two minutes at the end of the first half.Reyes danced through the Basel defence and his low cross gave Gameiro the easiest of finishes from close range.

A minute later, Krohn-Dehli was the provider with a run and cross that found Gameiro, and the striker's header came back of the underside of the crossbar and bounced in off his leg to make it 3-0.Denmark international Krohn-Dehli continued to pull the strings after the break, and his deft back-heel put Mariano through to shoot just wide as Sevilla went in search of a fourth goal.

Sevilla coach Emery, perhaps with an eye on his side's next match against Real Madrid, substituted Krohn-Dehli and the pace of the game dropped off thereafter.

Gameiro too was hauled off as Basel showed little sign of launching a fightback. Luca Zuffi’s effort from 25 yards out was still rising as it flew over the crossbar.

Breel Embolo then missed two chances late on as the Swiss side were dumped out of the competition.
