Manchester United watching young Mexico star

    2939472_heroa.jpg

Pachuca president Jesus Martinez claims that Manchester United are watching 20-year-old attacker Hirving Lozano.

The youngster, who goes by the nickname ‘Chucky’, has been capped on two occasions by the Mexico national team, scoring once, and has found the net 19 times in the league since making the step up to the club’s senior side.

Speaking to Fox Sports, Martinez explained: “Manchester United’s chief scout has been coming here to do special reports on our players, but especially Chucky.

“We would love it if he went to a team like Manchester United or Porto if he had to leave.”

Pachuca sold Hector Herrera to Porto in 2012, with the Red Devils reportedly holding an interest in the player at that time. Moreover, the Old Trafford club are believed to be following the progress of Erick Gutierrez and Rodolfo Pizarro.

Javier Hernandez is the only previous Mexican to have played for United; he moved from Guadalajara in 2010 as a 21-year-old before departing for Bayer Leverkusen last summer.

Lukaku is a very interesting option - Van Gaal

    romelu-lukaku-cropped_cutth0gw2af61bai9zkohcukw.jpg

Louis van Gaal described Everton striker Romelu Lukaku as a "very interesting" option for Manchester United as they look to strengthen their attack.

The Belgium international has been in superb form this campaign, scoring 18 goals in 29 Premier League outings, while setting up six more ahead of Sunday's match against United.Lukaku's good performances have not gone unnoticed elsewhere and Van Gaal is keeping a close eye on the 22-year-old's situation at Everton.

"Lukaku is a very interesting player, but I think every club in the world is looking at strikers," Van Gaal was quoted as saying by Daily Mirror.

"When you score a lot of goals, you are always a potential candidate for clubs. Football is like that. "When you look at scoring goals and providing assists, Lukaku does it at the highest level in the Premier League."

The striker's agent, Mino Raiola, recently claimed interest from Juventus, Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid in his client's services.Lukaku has a contract with Everton until June 2019.

Aguero and Silva can make PSG suffer - Thiago Motta

    davidsilvasergioaguero-cropped_82hfj0lsfa8f1vh43fiks2br2.jpg

Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Thiago Motta has identified Sergio Aguero and David Silva as the Manchester City dangermen ahead of Wednesday's Champions League quarter-final clash.

City head to the French capital buoyed by an impressive 4-0 win at Bournemouth on Saturday, with Aguero on target and Silva chipping in with an assist as Manuel Pellegrini's men stemmed a slump of one win in six Premier League matches.

Ligue 1 champions PSG were similarly untroubled as they breezed past Nice 4-1 courtesy of a Zlatan Ibrahimovic hat-trick, and Italy international Thiago Motta, 33, believes both sides will attempt to dictate the play in the first-leg encounter at Parc des Princes.

"They have great players," he told reporters after the Nice win."They have Silva, Aguero - if we give them the ball, we will suffer. The key will be to defend well and, when we have the ball, to control the game like we did against [in the last-16 against] Chelsea.

"They are good with the ball, but without the ball it's difficult. It's like us – when we do not have it, we suffer."

Leicester City 1-0 Southampton: Morgan nets winner as Foxes close in on title

    premier-league-team-of-the-weekend-wes-morgan_rlgwqi9qxncs1bhy1e9o7zv0c.jpg

Leicester City opened up a seven-point lead at the Premier League summit by overcoming Southampton 1-0 at the King Power Stadium on Saturday.

Wes Morgan's first-half header was enough for Leicester to secure a fifth single-goal victory in their last six top-flight matches, capitalising on second-placed Tottenham's 1-1 draw at Liverpool on Saturday to extend their advantage at the top.The afternoon started jovially as, on the eve of his birthday, Leicester chairman Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha laid on free doughnuts and beer for the home faithful.

But after a positive start, Leicester were soon put on the back foot and were fortunate not to concede a penalty when Danny Simpson appeared to block Sadio Mane's shot with his arm inside the box, with referee Michael Oliver unmoved.
Claudio Ranieri's side made the most of the reprieve as Morgan's first Premier League goal of the season ensured they took a lead into half-time.

Southampton goalkeeper Fraser Forster produced a pair of impressive saves to stop Jose Fonte putting through his own goal and keep Simpson at bay after the restart, but one goal proved enough for Leicester to take another step towards a maiden top-flight title.

Ronald Koeman introduced Cedric and Matt Targett in the wing-back positions as he opted for a three-man defence in a bid to boost Southampton's chances of retaining possession, but it was unchanged Leicester who seized the initiative in the early exchanges.

Christian Fuchs headed wide after Shinji Okazaki flicked on a corner from the right, while an important challenge from Fonte stopped the Japanese striker from diverting a cutback from Jamie Vardy.

Unperturbed, Southampton became more adventurous and, after Graziano Pelle steered a header from Cedric's cross over, they came close to taking the lead just after the half-hour mark.

Pelle set Mane through on goal but, having shifted the ball away from Leicester goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel, his shot was kept out by a last-ditch block from Simpson as legitimate claims he used his arm in the process were ignored by the official.Schmeichel then kept Fonte's curling strike out of the top corner with a fingertip save, but Leicester responded to the building pressure with the opening goal.

Fuchs was given time and space on the left and he used it to pick out Morgan, who towered over Jordy Clasie to divert his header in off the upright in the 38th minute.
The second half proved a much tighter affair, with chances initially limited until Fonte inadvertently looped Danny Drinkwater's pass from the right wing towards his own goal, needing a superb save from backpedalling Forster to keep it out.

England international Forster produced another brilliant stop when Simpson connected with Vardy's clever ball across the face of goal at the back post, but the defender's shot was placed poorly when he should have given the goalkeeper no chance. Southampton sent Charlie Austin on for his first appearance in more than month due to a hamstring injury as they searched for an equaliser.

But Leicester came closest to finding the net before the final whistle when Vardy was denied from an acute angle by the legs of Forster as Ranieri's side wound down the clock for a seventh clean sheet in their last eight league home games.

They now need just four victories to be crowned champions, while Southampton remain seventh after suffering a blow to their European hopes.

Atalanta 2-1 AC Milan: Gomez hits Rossoneri's European hopes

    2950902_heroa.jpg

Goals from Alejandro Gomez and Mauricio Pinilla saw Atalanta record a 2-1 Serie A win over AC Milan at the Stadio Atleti Azzurri d'Italia on Sunday.Luiz Adriano had earned Milan an early lead when he converted a penalty, but Pinilla restored parity shortly before the interval with a fantastic bicycle kick.

Gomez then delivered the hosts all three points with a cool finish at the hour mark as they moved further away from the drop zone.Milan, meanwhile, are only one point clear of Sassuolo in the battle for sixth place following this weekend's results as they chase Europa League football.

The game started with a minute's silence before kick-off in memory of Milan great Cesare Maldini, who passed away at the age of 84.

Milan started the match in brilliant fashion and needed only five minutes to open the scoring. Referee Gianluca Rocchi had no other option but to point to the spot after Guglielmo Stendardo handled the ball inside his own area and Luiz Adriano coolly converted from 12 yards.

Atalanta nearly replied immediately when Pinilla reached Gomez with a fine cross from the right, but Ignazio Abate did well to deflect the Argentine's header wide for a corner.

Mattia De Sciglio was next to threaten for Milan after a quick counterattack, blasting a shot wide from a narrow angle after some good work from Luiz Adriano in the build-up.

Giacomo Bonaventura fired a shot well over the crossbar halfway through the first half as he seemed desperate to impress against his former club, with Andrea Bertolacci also aiming too high shortly after.

Gomez came close to levelling the scoring shortly before the break, only to be denied by a last-ditch block from Luca Antonelli.

Pinilla did restore parity in the 44th minute, though, and the Chilean did so in spectacular fashion. The Milan defence failed to clear a corner from the right and Pinilla beat shot-stopper Gianluigi Donnarumma with a stunning bicycle kick in the top corner.

Milan struggled to create any chances of note early in the second half as they looked to restore their lead, prompting Sinisa Mihajlovic to bring on Mario Balotelli for Luiz Adriano. The Liverpool loanee's introduction did not pay off, however, as Atalanta grabbed the lead instead.

Marten de Roon set up Gomez with a clever ball inside the area and the 28-year-old had no trouble finding the net from close range for his seventh league goal of the season.Atalanta goalkeeper Marco Sportiello was alert when substitute Jeremy Menez tried his luck with a left-footed shot from inside the area.

Sportiello was again called into action when Balotelli beat the wall with a well-taken free-kick in the 75th minute, punching the ball wide for a corner as the home side held on to a surprise win.

:love:Man Utd become first Premier League side to score 1000 goals at home

    2390972_heroa.jpg

Manchester United reached a goalscoring landmark on Sunday as they became the first club to score 1000 goals at home in the Premier League.

Anthony Martial scored past Joel Robles shortly after half-time to bring up a total of 1000 goals at Old Trafford since the Premier League's inception in 1992.

United's first goal of the Premier League era came over 23 years ago on August 15, 1992 as Mark Hughes scored in a 2-1 defeat to Sheffield United during a season in which the Red Devils would recover to win their first title in 26 years.

Compared with other clubs in England's top flight, Arsneal are trailing behind in second with 916 goals scored at home while Chelsea are third with 896.

Wayne Rooney is United's highest Old Trafford goalscorer in the Premier League era, with the currently-injured England captain having netted 99 at home, with Paul Scholes in second with a total of 59.
    Q9ZHz7Q.png

Ironically, United had been criticised for their lack of potency at Old Trafford in the 2015-16 campaign, with Van Gaal's men having only scored 18 at home in the league before Wednesday evening's matches, the joint-worst of the current top eight.

And the Red Devils had gone on a run of 11 matches without a first-half goal at home earlier in the season, a drought they ended during a 3-0 win over Stoke City back in February courtesy of a 14th-minute Jesse Lingard header.

:love:Manchester United 1-0 Everton: Martial fires Van Gaal's men to crucial win

    anthonymartial-cropped_1fprc20h2c5f11asfidnlobase.jpg

Anthony Martial struck Manchester United's 1000th Premier League goal at Old Trafford as Louis van Gaal's side maintained their push for the Champions League places with a 1-0 win over Everton.

Following an uneventful first half and a wave of Everton pressure to begin the second period, United became the first team to reach the landmark when Marcus Rashford and substitute Timothy Fosu-Mensah combined to set up Martial's 13th goal for United this season.

The win moves the hosts back within a point of fourth-placed rivals Manchester City, who they beat immediately before the international break, with seven matches remaining for each side.

Everton hit the crossbar through captain Phil Jagielka shortly after Martial's strike but could not avoid a first Premier League defeat on the road since October.

Roberto Martinez's side remain 12th with eight league matches to play and could face United again in the FA Cup semi-final later this month if Van Gaal's men negotiate a quarter-final replay at West Ham.

Before kick-off, United icon Bobby Charlton received a rousing ovation on the field as an in-stadium mosaic marked Old Trafford's South Stand being renamed in his honour.United were unchanged from their derby win over Manchester City last time out, while the visitors welcomed England defender John Stones back from international duty with a place at centre-back ahead of Ramiro Funes Mori.

Everton winger Gerard Deulofeu – recalled in the visitors' other change - darted menacingly past Marcos Rojo but failed to get a shot off after bursting into the United box.

Both sides attacked willingly in an enterprising start and Martial saw his strike deflected narrowly beyond the far post by Everton full-back Leighton Baines.

David de Gea was out quickly to spare Chris Smalling, who lost his footing to leave reported United target Romelu Lukaku bearing down on goal in a first half which saw neither side produce a shot on target.

Fosu-Mensah replaced Rojo at half-time and Matteo Darmian switched to left-back but Deulofeu continued to cause problems down the United left – his low cross to Lukaku prompting a last-ditch intervention from Smalling.

Daley Blind was the next man to bravely deny Lukaku and Smalling blocked from Tom Cleverley, although Everton's pressure would count for nothing when United picked them apart in the 54th minute.

Teenage striker Rashford rolled a backheel into the path of Fosu-Mensah, whose low cross evaded Stones and Seamus Coleman for Martial drill into the net via the legs of goalkeeper Joel Robles.

Jagielka thudded a header from Deulofeu's right-wing corner against the bar as Everton sought an immediate response.

United, though, were attacking with increasing confidence by the time Martinez made a surprise call to replace the excellent Deulofeu with Kevin Mirallas. The change did nothing to shake the impression that Everton had run out of ideas, until the excellent Blind departed through injury to give them late encouragement.

Jagielka got on the end of a late set-piece but blasted too close to De Gea and Fosu-Mensah hacked a Coleman cross out of the goalmouth as United preserved a fourth consecutive home Premier League win.

Leicester having a magical season - Ranieri

    claudio-ranieri_a36s8p2aub3d10mfj3yl4dafu.jpg

Claudio Ranieri hailed Leicester City's "magical" season after they beat Southampton 1-0 on Sunday to move seven points clear at the top of the Premier League.

Wes Morgan headed home the only goal of the game in the first half, but Southampton manager Ronald Koeman felt his side should have had penalties for handballs in the box by Danny Simpson and Robert Huth.

Leicester have now won five of their last six league games by a 1-0 scoreline and are overwhelming favourites for the title after fellow contenders Tottenham were held 1-1 by Liverpool on Saturday, .

"I'm very calm," Ranieri told reporters after the match. "We believe in what we are doing. We believe it's a magical season."We believe next season it will not be the same and so we try to do our best.

"We have a clean sheet and I'm so happy. The chairman is happy. On Monday it will be his birthday and we sang 'happy birthday' to him before the match."

Ranieri hailed the performance of captain Morgan, who picked up a cold on international duty with Jamaica but helped his side to another clean sheet and scored the decisive goal.

"He had a little cold," the trainer confirmed. "He's strong. Wes is fantastic. He didn't have a holiday this season."He had the national team in July and he came back here, so I gave him some days off during the season because he needed them.

"But he came back on Friday. He had a cold, he was tired, but he is a strong man and a good example for everybody."When he speaks, everyone listens to him. But everybody is a leader in my dressing room. Everybody knows what I want."

Leicester need four wins from their last six matches to guarantee the title and face Sunderland at the Stadium of Light next Sunday.

Schmeichel: Rooney should play in midfield

    wayne-rooney-manchester-united_1tbbept232uwz100vbso2uddn7.jpg

Peter Schmeichel believes Wayne Rooney has all the attributes to be the "engine" of the Manchester United midfield but claims the England captain must have desire to change his role.

With Rooney sidelined with a knee injury, Anthony Martial - playing left wing - scored the only goal of the game against Everton as United moved back up to fifth in the Premier League on Sunday.

The legendary Danish stopper believes the former Monaco striker should be utilised as the central attacking player under Louis van Gaal instead of 18-year-old forward Marcus Rashford.

"Hopefully he [Martial] is going to play in the No.9 position," Schmeichel said. "I'd like to see him play where Rashford played today. I really want Martial to be the No.9 of Manchester United. "I think he plays well coming in from the left but he's much more dangerous through the middle."

Club captain Rooney has been out of action since the 2-1 away defeat to Sunderand in February but is expected to return against title-chasing Tottenham next weekend.

Schmeichel is a big fan of the 30-year-old and wants to see him employed in a central midfield role due to his similarities with former team-mate and dynamo Paul Scholes."Wayne can play in different positions," the ex-United stopper added. "If you ask Wayne I think he wants to play in the No.10 position.

"But I'd like to see Wayne develop into a midfield player. He can play a little bit like Paul Scholes could. I'm sure he can develop the engine to play in midfield."Wayne's vision, the way he sees football is really beneficial to the way Manchester United should play.

"He can play the long passes. He can tackle, he can win the ball back and he can defend. But Wayne has to want to play in that position."

Conte to sign as new Chelsea manager

    antonioconte-cropped_1t2sq4io6d9my1pbjpw9v09uu2.jpg

Italy coach Antonio Conte will put an end to months of speculation by signing a deal with Chelsea to become the London club's new manager.

Goal understands that the former Juventus boss is currently in London, and will put pen to paper on a contract on Monday to take over at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea have long been linked to the Italian, who won three consecutive Serie A titles with the Old Lady before leaving in 2014 for the national team job.

Conte will replace interim manager Guus Hiddink, who will step down at the end of the season after replacing the sacked Jose Mourinho following a poor start to the 2015/16 campaign.

But the Azzurri coach must first focus on Euro 2016, where the finalists four years ago will hope to challenge for honours in France.

Inter 1-2 Torino: Miranda and Nagatomo see red as hosts slip to defeat

    2953262_heroa.jpg

Torino shocked nine-man Inter with a 2-1 Serie A victory at San Siro, leaving the hosts' hopes of Champions League qualification severely damaged as a result.

The visitors had to come from behind as Inter captain Mauro Icardi gave his side an early lead, converting a penalty harshly awarded for handball against Torino defender Emiliano Moretti.

Torino levelled shortly after the interval when Cristian Molinaro finished with aplomb after an excellent team move and Inter's task then got harder when Miranda was sent off, receiving his second yellow card for a late tackle on Andrea Belotti.

Yuto Nagatomo was dismissed for bringing down Belotti in the box - Inter's 10th red card of the league season - and Belotti himself converted the penalty, sending Samir Handanovic the wrong way, leaving the Champions League dreams of Inter in tatters and easing the pressure on Torino coach Giampiero Ventura.

Ventura's side are now eight points above the relegation zone following a second win in 12, while Inter stay fifth and are eight points behind Roma in the battle for third place.

Before the match there was a minute's applause for AC Milan legend Cesare Maldini, who ended his playing career at Torino, after the former Italy coach passed away at the age of 84 on Sunday.

Daniele Padelli dived to his left and chose correctly, but Icardi's penalty was struck too well, the Argentina international netting his 13th Serie A goal of the season.

Miranda almost bundled in a second after 32 minutes but saw his effort blocked, before Icardi turned an effort wide of the post.

Belotti raced through on goal from Cesare Bovo's defence-splitting pass after 52 minutes, but Handanovic did brilliantly to deny him with a block.

Handanovic could do nothing about Torino's equalising goal three minutes later, however.

Bovo won the ball with a well-timed tackle and a terrific team move led to Maxi Lopez holding the ball up for Molinaro to slam in an unstoppable finish.

Inter's horrible start to the second half then got worse when Miranda was dismissed for a late foul on Belotti, earning a second yellow card.

After 67 minutes Padelli made a magnificent save to deny Icardi's downward header before Handanovic claimed a Lopez flick after a rapid Torino break as the game grew more open.

Inter were soon down to nine men when Belotti went down under Nagatomo's tackle in the box, the striker stepping up to slot in his eighth Serie A goal in 2016.

Substitute Daniele Baselli almost added a third for Torino deep in injury time but his superb strike came back off the post with Handanovic beaten as the visitors triumphed at Inter for the second season in succession.

Wenger: Arsenal must be realistic and not dream too much

    arsene-wenger-barcelona-arsenal-champions-league_149akrak8tmcq1kyrnnjl0jrak.jpg

Arsene Wenger has warned Arsenal to be realistic and "not dream too much" in the wake of Saturday's morale-boosting 4-0 win over Watford. The Gunners currently lie third and nine points behind leaders Leicester City in the table following their latest win, their second victory in a row.

Wenger insists it is unwise for his men to set themselves an objective for the end of the season and has urged them to focus on taking each remaining game one at a time.

“We have to be realistic and just prepare for the next game and not dream too much,” he told reporters. “When I say be realistic we have to look behind, over our shoulders, as well.

"Manchester City, Manchester United, West Ham are chasing. Let’s look over our shoulders and also chase [those ahead] if we can."To find a team who clicks at the right moment, sometimes you have all kinds of reasons.

"I feel we want to win our games and see what happens. It is too difficult to say any more than that. We have only one target now."Nevertheless, Wenger believes his players have the right maturity to cope with the pressures of the season run-in.

“I believe this team has the right mentality," the Frenchman added. "I have had many teams in my life and this team is top quality."They have gone through a bad period but when they play like that, it shows that mentally, they are pure.”

Smalling and Blind key to Manchester United victory - Mata

    romelulukakudaleyblind-cropped_pgsrcray5dc515x7nj8jdsopf.jpg

Juan Mata hailed Manchester United centre-backs Chris Smalling and Daley Blind after the battling 1-0 Premier League victory over Everton.

Anthony Martial scored United's 1000th Old Trafford goal in the Premier League nine minutes into the second half on Sunday but much of the emphasis fell on Louis van Gaal's defence.

Smalling and Blind were to the fore as the duo made a host of brave blocks and the latter's withdrawal due to fatigue during the closing stages left United unsteady as Everton pressed for an elusive equaliser.

The win moved United to within a point of fourth-placed Manchester City, who they defeated by the same scoreline immediately before the international break."Chris Smalling and Daley Blind have played well together in the whole season and we are very happy with our defenders," Mata told Sky Sports.

"It is a very important win after Manchester City's result yesterday, it was important to get the three points.

"It was very tight, Everton play very good football and have quality players and it is difficult to beat them. We started well in the second half and that was the difference. After the goal it was easier to play because they are more open. 1-0 was enough."Smalling acknowledged United began to feel the pressure as full-time approached, with little room for error in their bid for a Champions League place.

He told Sky Sports: "The first half we controlled it, but the second half we know there is so much to play for and it did get a bit scrappy."We know that we have to win our games because we can't be relying on other teams to slip up."

Aubameyang: I play this way because of Klopp

    aubameyang-klopp-dortmund_19ih7r6qrqnji1jhf5x9mnux7t.jpg

Borussia Dortmund striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang says he owes Jurgen Klopp a lot as he prepares to face Liverpool in the Europa League on Thursday.

The Gabon international has enjoyed another prolific season at Signal Iduna Park, scoring 23 goals already this season.

Klopp will make his first return to Dortmund on Thursday as Liverpool manager in the semi-finals of the Europa League.

And Aubameyang has revealed he is looking forward to facing his former coach, expressing his gratitude to the German.

“It is great for us to have this game,” he told reporters. “We can show Klopp we have worked hard to get back to where we were and that we have progression.

“It will be a very difficult game, for sure, but we want to show Klopp that we are working very hard.

“I owe him a lot. It was great to work with him and he taught me many things. If I play like this as a striker now, it is because of him.”

Aubameyang has followed in the footsteps of Robert Lewandowski at Dortmund and says he is still hoping to pip his former team-mate, and his Bayern Munich side, to the Bundesliga title.

“Of course it is very hard to follow Lewandowski. But it is a very good target to have and I am really happy to have scored again,” he added.

“I know that this competition has not finished. The battle will be on until the end and we will see who will be the champion!”

Dortmund warmed up for Thursday’s clash with a 3-2 victory over Bremen in a thrilling game which Aubameyang felt was vital for his side to win.

“It was very important for us,” he said. “It was a difficult game, especially in the second half; they scored two times and I think that was a bit of a surprise.

“But, after that, we did very well. We won this game, which we needed to do, and it is really great that we are back in the Champions League.”
