Ronaldo sets TWO new Champions League records

    2467672_heroa.jpg

Who said Cristiano Ronaldo was past his best?

The Portugal international rode to Real Madrid's rescue once again as his hat-trick secured a 3-2 victory over Wolfsburg to fire the Spanish club into the Champions League semi-finals.

Zinedine Zidane's men trailed following a shock 2-0 defeat in Germany but Ronaldo struck three times to pull Madrid through.

And in the process, the 31-year-old set two new Champions League records.

He his hat-trick was his third in the competition this season - no other player can match that - nor can anyone else say they have scored 15 or more goals in the Champions League in two different campaigns.

Manchester City 1-0 Paris Saint-Germain (agg 3-2): De Bruyne stunner sends hosts through to semi-finals

    2997282_heroa.jpg

Kevin De Bruyne's superb late strike sealed Manchester City's place in their first Champions League semi-final with a 3-2 aggregate win over Paris Saint-Germain.

City were heading for victory on away goals by virtue of their 2-2 draw at the Parc des Princes last week, but De Bruyne settled the nerves and sparked wild celebrations at the Etihad Stadium when he curled a brilliant low effort beyond Kevin Trapp with 14 minutes remaining on Tuesday.De Bruyne's intervention made amends for Sergio Aguero’s missed penalty in the first half of a tense, evenly-matched contest that offered few chances to either side.

City boss Manuel Pellegrini opted to leave Yaya Toure out of his starting line-up and saw his decision vindicated as Brazilian anchorman Fernando was excellent and came through the test without a repeat of the error that saw him gift PSG a goal in the first leg.

The French champions, on the other hand, failed to show any of the attacking flair that has helped them dominate Ligue 1 this season and they exited the competition with a whimper, although Lucas Moura and Zlatan Ibrahimovic both had goals disallowed for offside.

However, that will not worry City, who go into the hat for Friday's last-four draw in Nyon. With David Luiz suspended, PSG coach Laurent Blanc switched to a back three and City sought to press them early, but the visitors soon settled into a rhythm and began to control the game.

Ibrahimovic, hunting his 40th goal of the season, drew a fingertip save from Joe Hart with a dipping, swerving free-kick after a quarter of an hour, before City twice went close through Aguero.

The home side seemed to shake off their early nerves as half-time approached and were given a chance to take the lead when Aguero went sprinting into the box and was felled by a poorly-timed tackle by Trapp.

Referee Carlos Velasco Carballo gave the penalty and booked the PSG keeper, but Aguero side-footed his spot-kick well wide, and PSG were let off the hook a second time in quick succession when Serge Aurier's misplaced pass fell to Jesus Navas and the Spaniard fired off target.

Ibrahimovic stung Hart's palms early in the second half with a powerful free-kick from 25 yards and PSG tried to lift the tempo of their game after a sluggish end to the first period.Substitute Lucas had the ball in the net moments later only to see the effort ruled out for offside, and Thiago Silva's downward header was well saved by Hart as Blanc's team began a late push for a winner.

But with 15 minutes to go, City went forward and Gael Clichy's cross found Fernando, who touched the ball to De Bruyne and the Belgian curled home an unstoppable shot from the edge of the box.

Ibrahimovic put the ball in the net in the dying minutes but the offside flag was raised and PSG were dumped out of the Champions League amid delirious celebrations from the home crowd.

:shocked:Zidane's trousers split during Real Madrid's win over Wolfsburg

    2998512_heroa.jpg

It looks like Zinedine Zidane will be needing a new suit for the Champions League semi-finals.

The Real Madrid boss managed to split his trousers during Tuesday's 3-0 victory over Wolfsburg as a Cristiano Ronaldo hat-trick rescued the Spanish club.

It was still tense for Zidane, despite his side commanding a 3-0 lead, and after Karim Benzema saw his shot saved, the Madrid boss span around in frustration - but in doing so, he managed to tear his trousers!

Manchester City ready for tough semi-final challenge – De Bruyne

    kevindebruyne-cropped_1jpabzzx2ut7v1hy50aqvvn88k.jpg

Kevin De Bruyne says Manchester City are ready for a tough test in the Champions League semi-finals after his goal secured a 3-2 aggregate victory over Paris Saint-Germain to secure their place in the last four.

After Sergio Aguero missed a first-half penalty at the Etihad Stadium, City looked set to progress on the away goals rule having drawn 2-2 in Paris in the first leg, but De Bruyne struck a curling shot from the edge of the penalty area to ensure victory.

Real Madrid secured their place in the semi-finals on the same night, while Barcelona, Atletico Madrid, Benfica and Bayern Munich can all book their spot on Wednesday, and De Bruyne expects a difficult fixture when the draw takes place in Nyon on Friday.

"It feels great. We played a very good game," De Bruyne told BT Sport.
"Everybody fought. We didn’t actually create a lot of chances, but I think we deserved to go through.

"It was a fight. In the first half we deserved to be ahead, and we knew the second half was going to be tough. We created some chances and it’s good that we scored."Anything can happen. Obviously, it’s going to be a tough one in the semi-final but PSG was not an easy game either. I'm looking forward to it and we will be ready."

City were without Vincent Kompany for the second leg against PSG, but goalkeeper Joe Hart expects the captain to be fit and ready for the semi-finals.He said: "It’s an amazing night for us. We've worked hard in this competition.

"I’ve been here since the start of this Champions League run. We did struggle to start with but we've started to piece together results."Credit to PSG, they made it a fantastic encounter. I don’t think it was ever going to finish 0-0 with the way both teams played.

"In the previous leg I thought we didn't do the Champions League service with the way we played, but in this leg we really did shine and we’re really happy."We're getting everyone fit now. Vinnie is fit and we’re looking to finish the season on a high note."

Ibrahimovic hits out at Blanc's tactics after Paris Saint-Germain's Champions League exit

    2816942_heroa.jpg

Zlatan Ibrahimovic has criticised Laurent Blanc’s decision to play three in defence as Paris Saint-Germain crashed out of the Champions League.

For the return leg of their quarter-final tie at the Etihad Stadium, Blanc opted to play Serge Aurier, Thiago Silva and Marquinhos in order to accommodate Edison Cavani and Zlatan Ibrahimovic in central roles.

But the tactical move backfired and the French champions ended up reverting to a back four for the second half as Manchester City sealed a 1-0 win following Kevin De Bruyne's strike.

"In the first half we played in a system that we'd never tried,” Ibrahimovic told Canal+ after the match. “It went as it went."

Bilic: I don't want Rooney to play against West Ham

    premier-league-team-of-the-week-wayne-rooney_sfgg0g1ouusb159ei7b0uj0ox.jpg

Slaven Bilic has hailed Wayne Rooney as the "best" English player he has ever seen, and hopes the Manchester United striker remains on the sidelines for their upcoming FA Cup clash.

West Ham face United in the semi-finals of the competition on Wednesday, bidding to claim their first final berth since the infamous penalty shoot-out defeat to Liverpool in 2006.

England captain Rooney has been sidelined since the 2-1 away defeat to Sunderland in April, however, he made an appearance for the under-21 side on Monday as part of his rehabilitation.

Bilic has huge respect for United's centre forward but says he does not want to see Rooney make a surprise comeback against the Hammers.

"I’m a massive Rooney fan since he stepped on to the pitch in an Everton shirt,” Bilic told reporters. "I can’t talk about Jimmy Greaves or Bobby Charlton or Bobby Moore, but in my era Rooney is the best English player."I would rather he didn’t play tomorrow night. 70 per cent, 100 per cent fit, I would rather he watched the game."

The Croatian manager believes his side are the more likely of the two sides to progress to the Wembley showdown and revealed he often receives betting odds from club co-owner David Sullivan."The chairman emails me sometimes the odds and basically very few times were we favourites, every away game, no matter who we play we are underdogs," said Bilic.

"At home we are slight favourites, but when it comes to Man United I don't know. I don’t gamble so I don’t know a lot about it."For me it is easy to say it is not important who is favourites because it is a game of football but I can say ‘yes, tomorrow night I expect us to win and I think we have a good chance to beat them’."

Pellegrini hails 'very dangerous' match-winner De Bruyne

    kevindebruyne-cropped_1qm81vytnzldz1vdkw4vv2ztct.jpg

Manuel Pellegrini praised Kevin De Bruyne’s instinctive ability in front of goal after he fired Manchester City into the semi-finals of the Champions League with a 1-0 win over Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday.

Following last week's thrilling 2-2 draw at the Parc des Princes, the Etihad Stadium hosted a more tense affair, in which Sergio Aguero missed a penalty before De Bruyne made the breakthrough in the 76th minute, smashing past Kevin Trapp from outside the box.

It was the third time the 24-year-old has scored in as many starts since returning from knee ligament damage. And Pellegrini says De Bruyne used one of his key skills to make the difference against the French champions, insisting he helps lift the rest of the team.

"I think that Kevin has an important thing for a player," Pellegrini said. "We know that near the box he is a very dangerous player because he doesn't need too much place to have good shots."I always say that when good players play together, they all play better.

"Playing David Silva with Sergio Aguero, with Yaya Toure, with Fernandinho - of course, the team improves immediately."

Pellegrini was also delighted with centre-backs Eliaquim Mangala and Nicolas Otamendi after the two much-maligned big-money buys neutralised the threat of Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Edinson Cavani."I was very happy for both of them," Pellegrini said. "I don't think they have had a bad season. Maybe they have made mistakes in some games.

"But I said before the game it is very important to have our best players fit 100 per cent. We played a lot of games during this season with important players injured - we have a squad that merits us being at this stage.

"I'm very happy for both of them because they receive a lot of criticism. If you review the complete performance during the year, I think that they are doing well."
City and Real Madrid will await the results of Wednesday's remaining quarter-finals before learning their fate in Friday's draw.

Should Bayern Munich overcome Benfica, Pellegrini could be pitted against Pep Guardiola - although facing the man who will replace him in the City dugout next season does not appear to hold any added significance for the Chilean."For me, it's exactly the same. It doesn't matter who we draw," he continued.

"It will always be a difficult team - Bayern Munich if they win tomorrow or Barcelona or Real Madrid. It will be exactly the same."

Cristiano showed why he is best in the world - Ramos

    cristianoronaldo-cropped_b1wb6brqlouc1p1ps2n2mkfl7.jpg

Sergio Ramos says Cristiano Ronaldo showed why he is the best player in the world with a hat-trick that sent Real Madrid into the Champions League semi-finals at the expense of Wolfsburg.

Madrid trailed 2-0 from the first leg in Germany but a stunning individual performance from Ronaldo saw them seal progression with a 3-0 win at the Santiago Bernabeu on Tuesday.

Ronaldo followed up his 15th-minute opener by levelling the tie with a header less than 90 seconds later, and completed the turnaround 13 minutes from time with a free-kick.

The result keeps Madrid's hopes of an 11th European crown very much intact and Ramos was quick to heap praise on Madrid's Portuguese talisman. "We left our souls on the field for this victory. We had promised the fans and they deserve it," Ramos told beIN Sport.

"Cristiano deserved to be the hero of this magical night. He gives everything for this shirt. He's number one."Cristiano has yet again showed why he is the number one in the world. We rightly deserved the win and will enjoy going into the semi-finals."

Meanwhile, winger Gareth Bale told BT Sport: "Obviously it's an amazing feeling, we knew it was going to be a difficult test coming into the game being two down but, as I said after the game in Wolfsburg, we fully believed we could do it and showed we can."We had to show our true team spirit, true character. We definitely did that tonight and we showed the world what we're capable of."

With Madrid into the semis and just four points behind a Barcelona side suffering a slump in form by their lofty standards in La Liga, Zinedine Zidane's men are still in with a chance of doing the double.

Asked about that prospect, Bale added: "As I said after the Barcelona game, a loss always creates doubt in the team for them and hopefully that's the case. All we can do is concentrate on ourselves, try and win every game and see where that takes us."

Blanc aims dig at Manchester City: They are the guest club in the Champions League

    2694422_heroa.jpg

Laurent Blanc has aimed a swipe at Manchester City following Paris Saint-Germain’s Champions League exit on Tuesday evening.

The French champions were dumped out of the competition as Kevin De Bruyne struck in the second half to seal a 1-0 victory for Manuel Pellegrini’s side.

Blanc’s men struggled with their new formation of a back three in the first half and failed to make their chances pay in the second half after changing their system.

But while City have booked their place in the semi-finals, Blanc is doubtful that the Premier League club can compete with Europe’s elite.

“Manchester City are the guest club, invited to Barcelona’s, Real Madrid’s and Bayern Munich’s party,” said Blanc.

    Zidane: Special Ronaldo needs team-mates

    cristianoronaldo-cropped_1tj0dtgfvvdsk1syrt663yqk56.jpg

Zinedine Zidane stressed Cristiano Ronaldo does need all of his team-mates after the forward single-handedly guided Real Madrid into the semi-finals of the Champions League.

With Madrid trailing 2-0 from last week's first leg, Ronaldo produced a magnificent individual showing on Tuesday, his hat-trick sealing a 3-0 victory at the Santiago Bernabeu to ensure progression.

Ronaldo opened the scoring in the 15th minute and less than 90 seconds later Madrid were level on aggregate courtesy of a near-post header from the Portugal international. The former Manchester United star completed the comeback in style 13 minutes from time with a chipped free-kick, leaving Zidane to marvel at his abilities.

"What can I say about Cristiano Ronaldo? He has showed again he is the best player in the world. He is a special player," Zidane said."But at same time, Cristiano needs all the team. What we want, what he wants, is to speak of the team, what they have done together."

On his team's overall performance, Zidane added: "What we had to do was to show intensity, but also use our heads. My message, above all, was to have patience.

"I am very happy, and very proud of all they did tonight. It was a special night, we have achieved what we were looking for."The players came from 2-0 down. So it was my best night as a coach, so far, for sure."

Despite his delight at his team's showing, Zidane is keen not to get carried away as attention turns to Saturday's La Liga meeting with Getafe and Madrid's quest to chase down a stuttering Barcelona in the domestic title race."In one way it is a pity as you cannot celebrate too much tonight, but tomorrow we must think about the game on Saturday," Zidane said.

"You should not go crazy, as anything can happen in football. I never lost my head as a player, and will never do so as a coach."I'm not naive, I know there'll be difficult moments, we already had some. We just need to be able to manage them properly."
