Aguero closes in on Luis Suarez's Premier League hat-trick crown

    3017332_heroa.jpg

Sergio Aguero fired Manchester City past Chelsea with a sublime hat-trick at Stamford Bridge.

The Argentine opened the scoring with a deflected strike in the first half, while he added his second after rounding off a swift counter-attacking move nine minutes after the break.

Aguero capped his impressive display with his third from the penalty spot which takes his tally to 21 in the Premier League - one behind Harry Kane who leads the way.

It was the fifth hat-trick of Aguero’s Premier League career, and he still needs six more to pull level with Alan Shearer.

But in terms of players from outside of Europe, only Luis Suarez has scored more hat-tricks (six) than the Manchester City star.

Inter 2-0 Napoli: Icardi and Brozovic boost Champions League hopes

    3018672_heroa.jpg

Inter gave their Champions League hopes a big boost while simultaneously striking a potentially fatal blow to Napoli's Serie A title chances with a 2-0 victory at San Siro on Saturday.

Roberto Mancini's Inter went into the contest against the title hopefuls six points adrift of third-placed Roma and looking to crank up the pressure on the capital city club, who play Atalanta on Sunday.

Second-placed Napoli's need for the points was equally crucial as a win would have seen them move to within three points of Juve ahead of the league leaders' encounter with Palermo.

But the visitors lacked penetration in the absence of suspended top scorer Gonzalo Higuain, and first-half goals from Mauro Icardi and Marcelo Brozovic earned a deserved win for Inter.

In-form Nerazzurri captain Icardi got the hosts off to a great start with his fourth goal in five matches after just four minutes, despite suspicions of offside, and he then turned provider for Brozovic to strike on the counter-attack, making it 2-0 before half-time.

Napoli - who won November's reverse fixture 2-1 - continued to toil in the final third after the break, and Jeison Murillo wasted a fine chance to add further gloss.

The match marked the first meeting between Inter boss Mancini and Maurizio Sarri since the Napoli coach was banned for directing a homophobic slur at his counterpart during a Coppa Italia tie in January.

There was a handshake between the rival coaches pre-kick off, though, and Mancini was celebrating first in the fourth minute.

Gary Medel's excellent ball over the top was brilliantly controlled by Icardi and the skipper provided a clinical left-foot finish, Napoli's pleas for offside going unheard.

Napoli dominated the ball but were restricted to long-range efforts. Marek Hamsik's dipping shot was safely parried by Samir Handanovic before the Inter goalkeeper made a brilliant one-handed stop from Allan's drive.

Inter had scarcely threatened since the goal, but Napoli were let off the hook when Stevan Jovetic's teasing right-wing cross was headed wide at the back post by Ivan Perisic with the goal gaping.

It was 2-0 before the break. Jovetic's throughball picked out Icardi and he brilliantly teed up Brozovic to dink a fine finish past Pepe Reina.

Napoli still struggled to penetrate after the break, but Jose Callejon was unlucky with a well-controlled volley from Hamsik's cross that cleared the left-hand post.

Inter were keen to exploit the counter-attack and Murillo wastefully headed over the crossbar when unmarked from Icardi's corner.

Soon after, Reina spilled a simple ball into the box and Kalidou Koulibaly headed Jovetic's chip off the line.

The visitors tried to commit men forward in the closing stages, but Inter - who had failed to beat Napoli in their past six league meetings - controlled the game brilliantly and held firm for a crucial win.

Hiddink: Chelsea need to be in the top four

    guus-hiddink-chelsea-premier-league-20160301_6qx87f4cxm5s1qo2wrj5jcwor.jpg

Guus Hiddink says Chelsea cannot accept being out of the Premier League's top four after seeing his team outplayed in a 3-0 loss to Manchester City at Stamford Bridge.

A Sergio Aguero hat-trick settled the encounter in City's favour on Saturday, leaving Chelsea 10th, with five matches remaining in what has been a hugely disappointing campaign for last season's champions.

Hiddink, appointed as a short-term replacement following Jose Mourinho's sacking in December, will soon make way for Antonio Conte. And the Italian, who coached Juventus to three successive Serie A titles before taking over his country's national team, will be expected to orchestrate a considerable improvement next term.

"Chelsea are in a difficult situation this season," Hiddink was quoted as saying by the BBC."We managed to get out of the relegation zone but Chelsea need to be in the first four places.

"We were knocking on the door but we didn't create open chances. They [City] outplayed us ... the fans have had a very disappointing season. "We've got out of [being] near the relegation zone in a relatively short period of time."I told the boys you cannot let it slip away. Man City, you have to recognise they are having a very good season."

Asked about City's form ahead of their Champions League semi-final with Real Madrid, Hiddink added: "Man City are a rather strong opponent and have a lot experience playing in semis and finals. To win silverware you have to be in very good shape in April."

'I see a lot of Van Nistelrooy in Kane - his shots are borderline impossible to stop'

    2913532_heroa.jpg

Former Manchester United goalkeeper Tom Heaton has likened Harry Kane to Ruud van Nistelrooy after seeing the Tottenham striker in action on England duty.

Heaton departed United in 2010 after six years at Old Trafford during which he worked alongside Van Nistelrooy, who scored a total of 150 goals in 219 appearances.

Kane has established himself as one of the top strikers in the Premier League, netting 22 league goals this season to help Spurs challenge Leicester City for the Premier League title.

The 22-year-old also scored in England's 3-2 victory over Germany in Berlin and Heaton - who was also a part of the Three Lions squad - believes he possesses many of the Dutchman's qualities.“The standard of centre forwards is very good, Harry Kane, especially," Heaton told the Times. "His finishing, left and right foot, massively impressed me.

"As third-choice goalie at United I did a lot of finishing with Ruud van Nistelrooy. I can see a lot of his traits in Harry, finding the corner with his laces, a lot of power, borderline impossible for a goalkeeper to stop.

"Harry’s goal the other day on the turn for England [in Berlin] was outstanding, and didn’t surprise me, given what I’ve seen in training. It was an incredible experience being in Berlin.”

Burnley captain Heaton is seeking a return to the Premier League and the Clarets currently sit second in the Championship, two points behind leaders Middlesbrough.

The Rashford stat that shows up ALL his Manchester United team-mates

    3016252_heroa.jpg

Marcus Rashford’s impressive introduction to Manchester United’s first team has shown up all of his team mates.

The 18-year-old scored the winner to relegate Aston Villa on Saturday afternoon, which takes his tally to seven goals in 11 appearances since he made his debut at the end of February.

And since his barnstorming display in the 5-1 win over FC Midtjylland in which he scored twice, Rashford’s United team-mates have struggled to find the net.

Only Anthony Martial, a £57.6 million signing from Monaco last summer, comes closest with three goals for United since Rashford made his debut.

Benzema focused on Real Madrid after France snub, says Zidane

    karimbenzema-cropped_1a2fw3botoufx1u688a96x8qee.jpg

Zinedine Zidane believes Karim Benzema is ready to give his all for Real Madrid, having quickly gotten over the shock of being told he will not play for France at Euro 2016.

The French Football Federation (FFF) ruled Benzema out of the tournament on home soil pending the outcome of a legal investigation into an alleged plot to blackmail fellow international Mathieu Valbuena.Zidane said ahead of Saturday's Liga fixture at Getafe that Benzema was "annoyed" at the decision and the France striker took his frustrations out on the struggling side, with a goal and two assists in Madrid's 5-1 victory.

"Once Karim accepted he won't make the Euros, he knows his domestic routine is Real Madrid," Zidane said after the game at the Coliseum Alfonso Perez."He's a great professional and everything he does on the pitch for the team is important."

Benzema suggested his full focus is now on domestic matters, posting a message on Twitter which pointedly followed the club's motto "Hala Madrid" with "and nothing else".

De Gea backs 'unbelievable' Rashford to make United history

    marcus-rashford-cropped_1aze9zeqmgaek161kjnlv15cux.jpg

David De Gea has backed Marcus Rashford to make history at Manchester United following his "unbelievable" rise in recent months.

The 18-year-old scored the only goal of the game in Saturday's 1-0 win over Aston Villa at Old Trafford, taking his tally to seven goals in 12 senior appearances since his debut in February.

Manager Louis van Gaal admitted after the match that it is proving difficult to leave Rashford out of the team at present, and De Gea hopes he can continue his form for years to come.

"It's unbelievable, no?" he told MUTV. "This player is really young and he's scored many goals. Hopefully, for many years, he'll be in this club and can make history for the club as well."He's a shy guy, a really good lad and a good team-mate. He's a really good guy."

De Gea conceded United were not at their best against a Villa side who needed to win to avoid relegation from the Premier League, but he remains hopeful that the three points could yet prove crucial in the top-four race.

"We didn't play really well but sometimes you have to win games like today [Saturday] and take the three points," he said."We always try to give everything, we take the points and think quickly about the next game.

"We've defended really well this season and we need to continue until the last game and hopefully we will be in the top four. We need to win our games and wait for the rest of the teams. We will see in the end."

Bournemouth 1-2 Liverpool: Firmino and Sturridge keep Reds rolling

    3021722_heroa.jpg

Daniel Sturridge was in inspirational form as Liverpool sealed a 2-1 win at AFC Bournemouth to keep up their bid for a place in the Europa League next season.

Jurgen Klopp rotated the Europa League semi-finalists heavily following their midweek exertions against Borussia Dortmund, with both Roberto Firmino and Sturridge charged with leading the line for a side that boasted 10 changes from their midweek victory.

The latter looked particularly eager to prove a point and it was his brilliant back-heel despite the attention of Bournemouth's defenders that Artur Boruc parried right into the path of Firmino, who netted with ease.

Sturridge was not done yet, though, and he rose highest to meet Jordon Ibe's free-kick to net a decisive second for Liverpool four minutes later in injury time before the break.

The 28-year-old continued his dominant showing in the second half, striking the post, but it was the hosts who pulled one back through Joshua King, who let fly with a half-volley that left young Reds goalkeeper Danny Ward with no chance.

Bournemouth set about pressing the reshuffled Liverpool defence from the off, though Tommy Elphick's header straight into the hands of debutant Ward represented the best opening of the first 20 minutes.

Boruc saved comfortably from Kevin Stewart's placed effort but he showed far more agility to claw the ball away from the near post after Steve Cook's attempted clearance rebounded off the legs of Sturridge. But Boruc could do nothing to prevent Klopp's side from snatching the lead just before the break. Sturridge's clever back-heeled attempt was superbly saved by the Poland goalkeeper, only for Firmino to arrive and to tap home on the line.

Sturridge himself doubled the lead right on half-time, rising unopposed to head Ibe's set-piece from the left beyond Boruc and into the far corner.

A fumble from Boruc gave Firmino the chance for Liverpool's third within minutes of the restart, but the Brazilian could only hook his half-volley wide, and Sturridge's brilliant chip clipped the bottom of the post just five minutes later as the visitors assumed complete control.Bournemouth had scarcely threatened Ward's goal in the opening hour, but substitute Pugh at last brought a save out of the youngster, cutting inside Lucas from the right and shooting low into the keeper's midriff.

Pugh was denied again by a combination of Mamadou Sakho's challenge and Ward's right hand as he again raced clear into the area, with Eddie Howe's side at last beginning to offer some sustained pressure on the Liverpool goal.

Sturridge rattled the crossbar after Callum Wilson saw a header superbly saved by Ward, but Bournemouth did snatch a lifeline in injury time as King controlled expertly on the chest before rifling a half-volley beneath Ward from the edge of the area.

Cook headed narrowly over in the final seconds but Bournemouth could not find a dramatic equaliser, meaning they remain 13th.

Leicester City 2-2 West Ham: Last-gasp penalty gives Foxes dramatic draw

    3021632_heroa.jpg

Leicester City dropped points for the first time in six Premier League games, but Leonardo Ulloa's last-gasp equaliser rescued a precious but controversial 2-2 draw against West Ham.

After five victories without conceding, it looked like business as usual for Leicester, whose three PFA Player of the Year nominees - Riyad Mahrez, N'Golo Kante and Jamie Vardy - combined for a brilliant counter-attacking opening goal.

But goalscorer Vardy was dismissed for two bookable offences, the latter for what referee Jon Moss adjudged to be a dive. It sucked all momentum out of the hosts' play and West Ham turned the game on its head inside the final 10 minutes through Andy Carroll's penalty and a crashing Aaron Cresswell half-volley.

But Carroll gave away a contentious spot-kick in the fifth minute of added time and Ulloa stepped up to repeat his last-gasp heroics of February's home win over Norwich City, sending Leicester eight points clear at the top.Second-placed Tottenham can trim that advantage to five points when they travel to Stoke City on Monday.

However, Leicester's instant response to the first setback in their run-in keeps the most unlikely of league triumphs well within Claudio Ranieri's grasp. They now need eight points from their final four games to be sure of the title.

Leicester's late-season dash for the line has been built on a rock-solid defence which passed 500 minutes without conceding in the first half, but only after Cheikhou Kouyate saw his header hit Kasper Schmeichel's left-hand post, bounce along the line and rebound off the other upright into the goalkeeper's arms.An unchallenged Robert Huth headed a set-piece wide at the other end, but Leicester took the lead with a typically razor-sharp counter-attack.

With West Ham defenders up-field for a free-kick, Schmeichel claimed the ball before hurling it to Mahrez on the halfway line, before Kante took over, driving through midfield to set Vardy free into the left-hand channel and the Englishman powered a left-footed shot across Adrian.

Kante then reverted to his destructive best, sitting deep in midfield to stifle Dimitri Payet, while Wes Morgan was a magnetic presence for the Frenchman's few attempts to find the area from set-pieces.

Slaven Bilic replaced Pedro Obiang with Carroll - fresh from his hat-trick against Arsenal last week - in search of an equaliser and the visitors' task was given a boost as Vardy was dismissed 10 minutes into the second period.

Booked before the break for a late challenge on Kouyate, the England striker was shown a second yellow card by Moss as he burst into the box before inviting contact from Angelo Ogbonna - an act deemed to be simulation by the referee.

West Ham were soon on the hunt, but it was not until the 84th minute that they drew level - Carroll sending Schmeichel the wrong way from 12 yards after Morgan had hauled down Winston Reid. Two minutes later, the visitors were ahead as Cresswell's magnificent hit from long range stunned the home crowd.

But the King Power rose to its feet at the death as substitute Jeffrey Schlupp fell under the backtracking Carroll's challenge at the corner of the penalty area, with Moss incredibly pointing to the spot again and setting the scene for Ulloa's crucial strike.

Henry: Vardy took a dive... but it was clever!

    3022002_heroa.jpg

Thierry Henry believes that Jamie Vardy, who was sent off for simulation against West Ham, did take a dive but that he did so in a "clever way".

The Leicester City striker was given his marching orders by referee Jon Moss shortly after half-time after a tangle of legs with Hammers defender Angelo Ogbonna, with the England international shown a second yellow card.

And Arsenal legend Henry is of the opinion that Vardy did intentionally dive but that he was unfortunate to be sent off after a soft first yellow card for a late challenge on Cheikhou Kouyate.

Henry told Sky Sports: "It's very soft [the first yellow card for Vardy]. We all know how he his, he's going to chase everything and put his foot in but he doesn't actually make contact on the tackle. It's when he slides. It's nothing really.

"He's been doing it all season, trying to win penalties. I think he did [take a dive], in a clever way. He puts his legs into Ogbonna's and tries to get a penalty. He thinks Ogbonna is going to tackle him but he didn't.

"I don't think it's a penalty. I don't think the first yellow was a yellow so it's a tricky one. Why didn't he concentrate on finishing that opportunity with his left?"

Juventus 4-0 Palermo: Allegri’s men move nine points clear at the top

    3021452_heroa.jpg

Juventus dispatched Palermo 4-0 to take full advantage of Napoli's defeat at Inter by moving nine points clear at the top of Serie A with five games remaining.

Having watched nearest challengers Napoli slip up 2-0 at San Siro on Saturday, the champions made it seven league wins on the bounce to edge closer to retaining the title.

Sami Khedira's exquisitely taken volley gave the home side the ideal start before Paul Pogba, Juan Cuadrado and Simone Padoin made sure of the victory with second-half goals.

The only downside for Massimiliano Allegri's side came when Claudio Marchisio was carried off on a stretcher with a knee injury following a collision with a Palermo player, sparking fitness concerns with Euro 2016 looming large on the horizon. While Juve are on course for a fifth successive title, Palermo continue their slide towards Serie B with a seventh loss in nine Serie A games.

Juve started the game on the front foot as expected and went close inside the fourth minute when Khedira reacted first to a Pogba blocked shot and dragged an effort narrowly wide.Palermo struggled to get out of their own half and paid the price as the home side took a 10th-minute lead.

Pogba had all the time in the world to dink a ball over the Palermo back line, where Khedira had made the run, and the former Real Madrid man volleyed past Stefano Sorrentino.

The lively Pogba was involved again when he struck a volley into the ground that almost beat Sorrentino, although the 37-year-old did well to tip the ball onto the crossbar and out for a corner.

Aleksandar Trajkovski had a golden chance to equalise after he was slid through on goal by Franco Vazquez, but his dink over Buffon was cleared off the line by Andrea Barzagli.

Palermo were inches from levelling a minute before half-time when Ivaylo Chochev had a shot from inside the penalty area that deflected past the top-left corner by Mario Lemina with Buffon beaten.Patrice Evra steered a header wide from Paulo Dybala's free-kick as Juve finished the first half strongly.

Pogba almost caught out an unprepared Sorrentino with a 30-yard free-kick in the 12th minute of the second half, though his effort was narrowly over with the goalkeeper scrambling.Lemina tried a shot from similar distance soon after and Sorrentino was this time in position to parry the ball away for a corner.

Barzagli was required to make a vital intervention at the other end as Vazquez played Trajkovski through on the left side before the striker knocked in a teasing delivery that the Italy international dealt with well.

Pogba gave Juventus some much-needed breathing room with just under 20 minutes left as substitute Alvaro Morata sent in a teasing cross from the left side that beat everyone before the France international was on hand to poke home at the far post.

Cuadrado then added a wonderful solo goal. The on-loan Chelsea man ran at the Palermo defence before flicking the ball over a defender and finishing with a stinging shot that Sorrentino could only parry into the top left corner.

Padoin netted his first of the season, adding to the visitors' misery with a calm finish in the final minute of the match, slotting into the bottom corner after Morata had played him through to earn his second assist off the bench.
