:(BOMB DISPOSAL UNIT AT OLD TRAFFORD

Sky Sports presenter Ed Chamberlin has been speaking outside the ground...

"The bomb disposal unit arriving at Old Trafford suggests there will be some kind of controlled explosion. There is no confirmation of that at the moment but that is certainly the way it looks."

Mourinho has to be considered for United job, says Ferdinand

    josemourinho-cropped_1iwf9bizjjqgd1ceoorztyaaua.jpg

Jose Mourinho must be considered as a candidate to replace Louis van Gaal if he is sacked as Manchester United manager, says Rio Ferdinand.

Van Gaal's future at Old Trafford remains shrouded in doubt with fans and ex-players alike growing frustrated by United's inconsistent form this season. The Dutchman's tenure may hinge on making the Premier League top four and winning the FA Cup final against Crystal Palace next weekend.

Even if he does achieve those targets it remains to be seen if United stick with Van Gaal, who has stated he expects to be in charge next season, with speculation continuing to suggest they will approach Mourinho.

The Portuguese has been out of work since being sacked by Chelsea in December, and some have raised concerns as to whether he would be a good fit for United.

But club legend Ferdinand believes it would be foolhardy to not consider the ex-Real Madrid coach."Listen, if the club decide Louis van Gaal isn't the man anymore and Jose Mourinho is in the market, he has to be considered," he told BBC Radio 5live.

"He's a top manager, someone who's got great experience, he's a born winner. So for him to be in the market and not be interested in him, I don't think that's wise."

However, Ferdinand also believes that United assistant manager and club legend Ryan Giggs should be given an opportunity in the top job. Some pundits have argued that Giggs' lack of managerial experience will count against him, but Ferdinand pointed to Pep Guardiola's success at Barcelona as proof the Welshman can bring trophies to United.

"You've got Ryan Giggs sitting at the club. Is he going to get a chance? It's been mooted that he's sat there getting experience so we'll see what for?" he added."Where did Pep Guardiola manage before Barcelona? Pep is the most successful manager in recent years, learnt his trade at Barcelona and the teams below.

"He didn't have the experience of another club somewhere and getting his wings, he did it within the club, knew the club's DNA and what it took win in that environment."Who says Ryan Giggs can't be that guy for Manchester United."

I don't want France return, insists Ribery

    franck-ribery-cropped_1l8hay0p3cieo19l7dp6dt44pd.jpg

Bayern Munich winger Franck Ribery insists he has no desire to play for France again, despite suggestions he had set his sights on a Euro 2016 spot.

The 33-year-old retired from international duty in 2014 but hinted earlier this year that he could be open to a return after regaining full fitness with the Bundesliga champions.

Head coach Didier Deschamps left Ribery out of the squad and reserve list for the finals in France and said this week there was "no reason" to overlook another player in favour of the winger.

Ribery, however, says his intention was never to force his way into the set-up and denied attempting to force Deschamps' hand."I never made an offer to Deschamps. That's why I don't understand his statements," he told Sport Bild. "I only said that he has to take the best players with him to the Euros, not that I want to return.

"I have no desire to play for France. I left that chapter behind me with my resignation in 2014. Since then, I've only thought about my career at Bayern. I feel at ease here and enjoy football."

:(Herrera: Manchester United players are 'nervous' after suspect package found at Old Trafford

    3171862_heroa.jpg

Ander Herrera admits the Manchester United players are “nervous” after a suspect package found at Old Trafford forced the match to be abandoned.

United's final Premier League game of the season against Bournemouth was called off on Sunday afternoon after a suspicious item was found in the north-west corner of the stadium.

Shortly before kick-off, both the Stretford End and the Sir Alex Ferguson Stand were evacuated in response to the threat. United then took the decision to abandon the game completely.

“We are still in the dressing room it seems that we will be the last out of the stadium,” Herrera told Spanish radio station Cope. “We have been nervous and tense.”

Greater Manchester Police have sent a bomb disposal unit to Old Trafford to deal with the threat.

The Premier League have confirmed that Sunday's fixture will be rearranged "as soon as practically possible".

United require a win against Bournemouth to stand any chance of reaching next season's Champions League, while a victory for Eddie Howe's side could see them finish as high as 12th.

Premier League confirms Manchester United - Bournemouth to be rescheduled 'as soon as practically possible'

    3172642_heroa.jpg

The Premier League has confirmed that Manchester United's abandoned match against Bournemouth will be rescheduled as soon as practically possible.

Sunday's match at Old Trafford was forced to be abandoned after a suspect package was found in the north-west section of the stadium.

A statement from the Premier League read: “The decision to abandon the Manchester United versus AFC Bournemouth match was taken after the Police advised of the necessity to deal with a suspected package.

“When it comes to matters of security it is obviously right that Manchester United and the Premier League place the safety of supporters and employees foremost.

“The Premier League will seek to rearrange the fixture as soon as practically possible and will advise fans accordingly. It is always the last resort to abandon one of our fixtures and while we apologise for the inconvenience caused to fans we are sure, in the circumstances they will appreciate the need to do so.”

Before the scheduled 3pm kick-off, United began evacuating both the Stretford End and the Sir Alex Ferguson Stand in response to the security threat.

The decision to call the game off was made shortly after 3pm, while Greater Manchester Police's bomb disposal team were deployed at Old Trafford.

Arsenal 4-0 Aston Villa: Giroud nets hat-trick as Gunners leapfrog Tottenham

    3172742_heroa.jpg

Arsenal ended their Premier League season on a high as Olivier Giroud's hat-trick ensured they beat rivals Tottenham to second place after cruising to a 4-0 victory over relegated Aston Villa.

Spurs failed to get the point they required to make sure of second place in their game at Newcastle United, astonishingly losing 5-1.That opened the door to Arsenal and Giroud made it six consecutive goalscoring appearances against Villa with a first-half header and two late finishes.

Substitute Mikel Arteta then forced a late own goal by cannoning a shot against the bar and in off goalkeeper Mark Bunn to ensure the Gunners kept their side of the bargain at a delighted Emirates Stadium.

Arsenal fans relished the surprise final-day turnaround as Tottenham missed out on the chance to finish above them for the first time since 1995, prior to the beginning of Arsene Wenger's reign.

While there is frustration at their failure to win the league in a season when underdogs Leicester City secured the title, it is the first time Arsenal have finished in the top two since 2005 - an achievement made all the sweeter by Spurs' late-season collapse.Villa end the season with only three victories and 17 points to their name as they prepare for Championship football in 2016-17.

Arsenal were ahead inside five minutes when Alexis Sanchez's flick released Nacho Monreal down the left and his cross was headed home by an unopposed Giroud from 12 yards, with Bunn unable to keep it out.

Villa – who had Aly Cissokho back from suspension in their only change – briefly threatened when Jordan Ayew took advantage of poor defending from Gabriel to charge through on goal, with the hosts relieved by Laurent Koscielny's crucial clearance.

News of Newcastle's opening goal against Tottenham was greeted by a huge cheer from the home support and Alexis came close to further improving the mood, curling an effort just wide after cruising past Jordan Lyden.

Jack Wilshere was starting his first Arsenal match since the final game of last season as part of four Wenger changes and could have marked the occasion with a goal.

The midfielder sliced off-target after Alexis had taken advantage of Leandro Bacuna's error and picked him out at the back post, with Newcastle's second goal at St James' Park putting the Gunners in a strong position to claim the runners-up spot.

A low-key start to the second half developed into a tense atmosphere when Spurs got a goal back, before the collective cheer returned when Rafael Benitez's men restored their two-goal advantage.

Santi Cazorla collected Mesut Ozil's pass, but was thwarted by Bunn as Arsenal attempted to put their result beyond doubt.

But the win was sealed on 77 minutes as Ozil and Alexis exchanged passes in the build-up before the Germany international squared for Giroud and the striker swept his finish into the roof of the net.Within 114 seconds it was three, Hector Bellerin's through ball releasing the France international and he stretched to guide his low finish beyond Bunn, celebrating with Tomas Rosicky and Arteta on the sideline.

Alexis was again denied by Bunn, but Newcastle's fourth and fifth goals ensured there was a party mood throughout the closing stages.Arteta was given a warm welcome as he came off the bench for his last appearance at the club and then had an involvement in the fourth goal.

The experienced midfielder latched on to Alexis's cross, seeing his shot hit the crossbar and deflect in off the back of Bunn with what proved to be the last action of the match, the veteran Spaniard reduced to tears after the final whistle.

Southampton 4-1 Crystal Palace: Saints on the brink of Europa League after win

    3172452_heroa.jpg

Southampton moved within touching distance of a place in the Europa League next season with a commanding 4-1 win over Crystal Palace, but Ronald Koeman's men will have to wait for confirmation after Manchester United's clash was called off.

Ronald Koeman's men were seventh heading into the encounter, but they leapfrogged West Ham following their failure to beat Stoke City.

The home side were on top from the outset as Palace manager Alan Pardew rested several first-team regulars ahead of next week's FA Cup final against Manchester United, but it took them until the closing stages of the first half to open the scoring, with Sadio Mane netting his 15th goal of the season in all competitions.

Graziano Pelle doubled Saints' lead after the break, only for Jason Puncheon to pull one back for the away side against his former team.Southampton were not to be denied, though, as Ryan Bertrand converted a penalty, before Steven Davis added a fourth with three minutes to go.

The hosts dominated the early stages with Palace pinned back in their own half, but the visitors were the first to threaten when Dwight Gayle called goalkeeper Fraser Forster into action with a shot from the edge of the area.

Dusan Tadic attempted to rally Southampton and the Serbia international did well to set up Mane in the 23rd minute, with the attacker firing just wide after beating Adrian Mariappa to the ball. Shane Long was then unfortunate not to open the scoring when he headed inches wide following a superb cross from England international Bertrand.

Koeman’s men continued to push for an opener and Virgil van Dijk came close when he fired a free-kick from a dangerous position just over the crossbar.

Southampton eventually got the goal they deserved in the 43th minute when Mane capitalised on some poor goalkeeping from Speroni, the Senegalese lifting the ball over the goalkeeper’s head after he failed to adequately deal with a cross from Tadic.

Palace nearly replied immediately through Gayle, with Forster thwarting the striker from close range with a quick reflex save.Forster showed his class again on the hour mark, making a diving save to keep Palace youngster Sullay Kaikai's bouncing effort out.

The home supporters breathed a sigh of relief when Pelle doubled Southampton's lead minutes later with his 11th league goal of the season, heading past the helpless Speroni after a fine cross from Cuco Martina.

Alan Pardew's men never gave up, though, and Puncheon pulled one back in the 64th minute, finding the top corner with a well-taken strike from inside the box.
The away side's resurgence ended in the 75th minute when the referee awarded Southampton a penalty after Mariappa and Pape Souare sandwiched Mane, with Bertrand stepping up to make it 3-1.

Mane came close to adding a fourth on two occasions, but it was Davis who eventually added his name to the scoresheet after some good work from Pelle.

Everton 3-0 Norwich City: Youngsters inspire Toffees to victory

    3172752_heroa.jpg

Everton wrapped up their Premier League campaign in impressive fashion as they ran out comfortable 3-0 winners against relegated Norwich City at Goodison Park.

David Unsworth and Joe Royle took over the Everton reins following Roberto Martinez's sacking in midweek and handed debuts to Tom Davies, Kieran Dowell and Jonjoe Kenny, who all played key roles in the Toffees' victory.

James McCarthy opened the scoring for Everton after 19 minutes before Leighton Baines converted a penalty right on the stroke of half-time after Robbie Brady fouled Romelu Lukaku inside the Norwich box.

Norwich, who were consigned to an immediate return to the Championship following Sunderland's win over Everton on Wednesday, couldn't live with the Merseysiders as Kevin Mirallas made it 3-0 from Kenny's cross in the second half.
The result was Norwich's ninth defeat in their last 10 away games and manager Alex Neil will need to target an improvement in his side's form on the road if he is given the opportunity to mount a promotion charge in the second tier next season.

Unsworth and Royle gave a starting place to youngster Matthew Pennington as well as full first-team debuts to Davies and Dowell, while Neil restored Matt Jarvis and Cameron Jerome to his starting line-up.

Lukaku's goals have been a bright spot in an otherwise difficult campaign for Everton, and the Belgium international almost added to his league tally of 18 but Norwich goalkeeper John Ruddy denied him with a good double save after 10 minutes.

Everton's opening goal came from a less likely source when McCarthy slammed home an emphatic first-time shot from 20 yards after a strong run from Dowell, whose confidence and positivity delighted the home crowd throughout the first half.
Defensive frailties were one of the major issues of Martinez's tenure at Everton, but lone Norwich striker Jerome failed to threaten departing shot-stopper Tim Howard's goal in the opening period despite some industrious play by Graham Dorrans and Nathan Redmond.

On the cusp of half-time, Lukaku tumbled under a challenge from Norwich substitute Brady and Baines coolly slotted the resulting penalty low into the corner of the net to send Everton into the break 2-0 up.

With the second half just three minutes old, Dowell carved an opening that saw McCarthy feed substitute Kenny and the 19-year-old crossed for Mirallas to score a simple tap-in at the far post.

Howard, making the final appearance of a 10-year Everton career before moving to MLS side Colorado Rapids, was determined to end his time at the club with a clean sheet and he saved well with his foot when Brady fired in a dangerous low shot.

Dowell received a rapturous round of applause when he was replaced by Ross Barkley for the last 20 minutes of the game, and though the England international made a wonderful mazy dribble before testing Ruddy with a shot, he didn't do enough to steal the show from the new breed of Everton stars.

West Brom 1-1 Liverpool: Ibe secures point as Klopp rests stars for Europa League final

    3172982_heroa.jpg

Jordon Ibe scored his first Premier League goal in brilliant fashion as Liverpool warmed up for the Europa League final by rounding off their Premier League campaign with a 1-1 draw at West Brom.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp named several youngsters in his XI at The Hawthorns, with the Reds due to play Sevilla in Basle on Wednesday. Victory in that match would secure them a place in the Champions League next season.

The hosts made the most of the absence of the likes of Philippe Coutinho and Roberto Firmino when Salomon Rondon struck the opener after brilliant work by their own youngster, Jonathan Leko.

Liverpool went in level at the break, though, as Ibe netted his first top-flight goal with a fine solo effort, finishing calmly after showing brilliant pace down the right.

West Brom created the better chances after the break, with Rondon particularly dangerous - including hitting the post with a header early in the second half - but Tony Pulis' men ended the season on a nine-match winless run.

Klopp's side, meanwhile, finished eighth, but the German was able to welcome back captain Jordan Henderson and Danny Ings - who had missed one and seven months respectively with knee injuries - in the second half in a boost to Liverpool's options ahead of the continental showpiece.

Before kick-off, Darren Fletcher and ex-Liverpool striker Rickie Lambert laid wreaths in tribute to the victims of the Hillsborough tragedy, while 96 away seats were painted red and left empty.

When the game started, Liverpool's youngsters settled well and the lively Sheyi Ojo cut in from the left before aiming a tame 20-yard effort at Ben Foster.

But it was a West Brom teenager who made the game's first telling contribution, Leko showed great footwork on the edge of the box before slipping in Rondon, whose near-post drive beat Adam Bogdan.

The visitors were level in the 23rd minute, though, and in some style. Ibe gave Jonny Evans the slip on the right of the halfway line, before driving into the West Brom box and rifling low past Foster.

Joe Allen then tried his luck from range, but his left-foot effort was sliced wide.

West Brom went agonisingly close to retaking the lead shortly after the restart when Rondon leapt highest to head Craig Gardner's free-kick against the left-hand post, the striker's rebound on the half-volley sailing high over the top.

Rondon continued to cause problems and the Venezuela striker just failed to make contact with Craig Dawson's cross on the hour.

Liverpool responded by bringing on captain Henderson and Ings to a warm reception, but it was Rondon again who proved the dangerman when a stabbed shot towards goal from a corner was deflected narrowly wide.

West Brom, who brought on youngsters Tyler Roberts and Sam Fields for their debuts, had one last chance but Dawson failed to turn in Rondon's cross-shot from close range.

Swansea 1-1 Manchester City: Visitors all but seal Champions League qualification

    swansea-manchester-city_ikmpfi7inxsx1gih8rjwacplu.jpg

Manchester City have all but confirmed their place in the Champions League next season after playing out a 1-1 draw at Swansea City in Manuel Pellegrini's final game in charge of the club.

The expected final-day battle between City and Manchester United did not materialise as their rivals' match against AFC Bournemouth was abandoned after a suspicious package was discovered at Old Trafford.

Barring an improbable 19-goal victory when that match is rescheduled, United are now unable to finish above their neighbours due to a vastly inferior goal difference.

Kelechi Iheanacho gave Manuel Pellegrini's team an early lead, but, in the City manager's final match before making way for Pep Guardiola, he endured a familiar tale of wasted chances within a patchy performance - the kind of display that has turned a campaign that promised so much into a gruelling slog for the one-time title favourites.

Andre Ayew's 12th Premier League goal this term came via a deflected free-kick in first-half stoppage time and Swansea end the season in 12th, looking forward to an extended spell under Francesco Guidolin after their boss penned a two-year contract extension this week.

Ki Sung-yueng's absence due to military service in his native South Korea contributed to Swansea making four changes to the XI that beat West Ham 4-1 last weekend, while Manchester City were unchanged.

Kristoffer Nordfeldt kept out a fifth-minute shot from Sergio Aguero, but the home goalkeeper, making his Premier League debut, was powerless to stop Iheanacho from turning in the rebound - the goal eventually awarded after referee Mike Dean and his assistant ruled the Nigeria striker was onside.

Swansea briefly thought they were level through Jefferson Montero, although the winger was penalised for shoving Bacary Sagna before heading home.

Aguero, who failed in his bid for a second consecutive Premier League Golden Boot, was played through by Jesus Navas' pass from the right, but fired into the side-netting.

The Argentina star's desire to overhaul Tottenham's Harry Kane as the division's top scorer appeared to affect his composure in front of goal, as he and Iheanacho were culpable of wasting opportunities during a dominant spell for the visitors.

Navas curled a shot wide after the impressive Kevin De Bruyne instigated a swift counter-attack in the 39th minute and Pellegrini's men were left to their profligacy as Ayew's free-kick on the stroke of half-time deflected off Fernando on the end of the wall and spun beyond Joe Hart.

The visitors were back on the front foot after the restart, with Eliaquim Mangala heading on to the roof of the net from a teasing left-wing delivery from De Bruyne.

Iheanacho's poaching instincts let him down in the 52nd minute when Nordfeldt saved from Navas on the angle with his boot and the teenager could not convert the loose ball.

Aguero's trials continued as he dragged an ugly effort wide, while there was an air of inevitability when Iheanacho lost his footing and sliced over in the 71st minute.

Samir Nasri then came on for Iheanacho as the match petered out and Manchester City escaped with their minimum requirement, and Pep Guardiola is extremely likely to be managing in the Champions League next season unless United do something truly unbelievable.

Chelsea 1-1 Leicester City: Drinkwater stunner earns point for Premier League champions

    3172962_heroa.jpg

A brilliant strike from Danny Drinkwater denied Chelsea the chance to mark Guus Hiddink's final game in charge with a win, earning Premier League champions Leicester City a 1-1 draw at Stamford Bridge.

Hiddink took over from Jose Mourinho in December and helped steer the club into the top half of the table, but Drinkwater's effort ensured he would not get a winning send-off before Antonio Conte takes the reins next season.

Leicester clinched the title following Chelsea's 2-2 draw with Tottenham on May 2, and the Foxes were welcomed onto the pitch by last season's winners with a guard of honour - Claudio Ranieri, Blues manager from 2000 to 2004, receiving a warm ovation from the home fans.

Kasper Schmeichel produced excellent saves to keep Willian and Cesc Fabregas out in the first half, but he was beaten 21 minutes after the restart. After substitute Jeffrey Schlupp felled Nemanja Matic inside the box, Fabregas slotted a cool finish from the penalty spot beyond the Dane.

The deposed champions were unable to see out the win, though, with Drinkwater, returning from suspension in place of Shinji Okazaki, firing beyond Thibaut Courtois - back in the line-up after recovering from illness - with eight minutes remaining.

Stoke's win at home to West Ham leaves Chelsea 10th after a season of stagnation, while Leicester end their memorable campaign 10 points clear of second-placed Arsenal at the summit.

Chelsea quickly set about trying to upstage the new champions, Pedro cutting inside of Danny Simpson and curling a shot from the left-hand side of the box narrowly wide of the far post in the seventh minute.Jamie Vardy fired off target from 20 yards in the 13th minute, but Riyad Mahrez set him up for a better chance midway through the half.

The Algeria international scooped a pass in behind the defence that Vardy latched onto, lifting the ball over the onrushing Courtois and wide of the post.

Chelsea responded positively, with Pedro nicking the ball away from Schmeichel and teeing up Bertrand Traore, whose shot was blocked by Wes Morgan.
With the clock showing 26 minutes, the Stamford Bridge faithful turned their attention away from the pitch.

John Terry's name rang out, along with placards showing his name and number, prompting a show of appreciation from the suspended captain – who was offered an extension to his expiring contract in the week. The Chelsea players remained focused, however, and Traore was denied before Schmeichel produced a brilliant one-handed stop low to his left to keep Willian.

In a busy end to the half for the Denmark international, he parried a 20-yard drive from Fabregas before punching a looping effort from Baba Rahman clear.Ranieri introduced Schlupp and Okazaki for the second half, and it was an error from the Ghana winger that resulted in the opening goal.

Schlupp went to ground and cut down Matic inside the penalty area, with Fabregas stuttering in his run-up before sending the ball into the opposite corner to Schmeichel.

However, Drinkwater denied Chelsea the chance to send Hiddink off with three points, firing beyond Courtois with eight minutes remaining to end the champions' season of highs on another positive.

Watford 2-2 Sunderland: Deeney seals point in Flores' final game

    3173592_heroa.jpg

Sunderland saw two goals wrongly disallowed for offside and had a controversial penalty given against them in an entertaining 2-2 Premier League draw at Watford.

Sam Allardyce's men celebrated securing their survival with a 3-0 win over Everton on Wednesday, and the former West Ham boss made nine changes for Sunday's clash at Vicarage Road, including debuts for Rees Greenwood and Thomas Robson. The visitors twice took the lead through Jack Rodwell and Jeremain Lens, either side of Sebastian Prodl's equaliser.

But they were denied a two-goal advantage on two occasions as Duncan Watmore and then Dame N'Doye saw efforts ruled out with replays suggesting both decisions to be incorrect.

To make matters worse for Sunderland, referee Kevin Friend then awarded the home side a questionable spot-kick when John O'Shea was adjudged to have fouled Jose Manuel Jurado.Troy Deeney converted for his 13th league goal of the season as Watford secured a point for Quique Sanchez Flores in his last game in charge.

Watford's Almen Abdi was the first to threaten in the sixth minute, firing narrowly wide of the post from 18 yards following good link-up play between Odion Ighalo and Deeney.

Miguel Angel Britos sliced Watmore's cross over the bar as Sunderland grew into the contest, before Ighalo shot wide having worked space for himself at the other end.

Sunderland goalkeeper Jordan Pickford was forced into a first notable save by Nathan Ake's rasping drive, but it was the visitors who broke the deadlock in the 39th minute through Rodwell.

Lens' initial shot was saved by Heurelho Gomes, but the ball was worked back out to the midfielder, whose pass across the area was converted by an unmarked Rodwell running in at the back post.

It ought to have been 2-0 a minute later when Watmore slotted home N'Doye's throughball, but the goal was ruled out for offside with replays showing Watmore was level with the last defender.

And Sunderland's sense of injustice was exacerbated three minutes after the restart when Prodl headed home Adlene Guedioura's corner, with the visitors claiming a push on O'Shea.

But parity did not last long as Watmore led a swift counter and fed Lens, who cut back inside on his left foot and fired low underneath Gomes.Pickford saved impressively from Ake as Watford went in search of an equaliser, before Sunderland were left cursing the linesman's flag for a second time.

N'Doye's header from Sebastian Larsson's free-kick was disallowed, and Sunderland were left further aggrieved when Friend pointed to the spot following a coming together between O'Shea and Jurado_O'Shea looked to have won the ball but that did not concern Deeney, who sent Pickford the wrong way from 12 yards.

Both sides pushed hard for all three points in the closing stages as Watmore and Ighalo went close, but neither was able to prove the hero as the spoils were shared.

:shocked:Newcastle 5-1 Tottenham: Spurs slip to third after thrashing

    3172992_heroa.jpg

Tottenham missed the chance to finish above Arsenal for the first time in 21 years after falling to a 5-1 loss at relegated Newcastle United.

Mauricio Pochettino's men needed only a point to be practically assured of clinching second and finishing above London rivals Arsenal for the first time since Arsene Wenger took the helm.

But instead it was Newcastle that finished a dreadful campaign on a high, roared on by a vociferous home crowd who made no secret of their desire to see Benitez stay on despite having a relegation release clause.

Georginio Wijnaldum provided a close-range finish to give Newcastle a deserved lead, which was doubled by Aleksandar Mitrovic's header.

Spurs pulled one back through Erik Lamela on the hour mark and the game looked to set to turn in their favour when Mitrovic saw red for an aggressive foul on Kyle Walker.

However, the visitors were ravaged on the counter by a depleted Newcastle, Wijnaldum doubling his tally from the spot before Rolando Aarons and Daryl Janmaat put the game well beyond doubt and capped off an embarrassing day for Spurs late on.

Newcastle started with an evident zip about their play and were rewarded in the 19th minute, capitalising on some poor defending from the away side.

The opener came as Toby Alderweireld failed to deal with a Janmaat cross, which Moussa Sissoko played into the path of Mitrovic to tee up Wijnaldum, who found the bottom-right corner with an accomplished finish.

And Spurs were punished further for a lacklustre first-half performance six minutes before half-time as White Hart Lane old boy Andros Townsend surged down the right and played the ball to Sissoko, whose excellent cross was met with a superb header from Mitrovic that left Hugo Lloris with no chance.

Spurs went close to halving the deficit just before the interval, but Karl Darlow was equal to Christian Eriksen's near-post strike.

Pochettino made a double change prior to the second-half restart, Josh Onomah and Tom Carroll coming on in place of Son Heung-min and Ryan Mason.

The visitors got back into the game as Cheick Tiote paid the price for conceding the ball in midfield by Lamela, who lashed in off the crossbar at the near post despite Darlow appearing to get a hand to the strike.

Darlow was called into action again to stop Onomah from restoring parity after the substitute had cut in from the right at the end of another well-worked Spurs attack.

The visitors were given further cause for motivation when Mitrovic saw red for a woeful high challenge on Walker.

Eriksen then curled narrowly over from long range, but – shortly after Walker was withdrawn by Pochettino – Newcastle's two-goal advantage was restored in controversial fashion after 72 minutes.

Sissoko broke free down the left and into the box before going down under the challenge of Jan Vertonghen, with referee Anthony Taylor showing little hesitation in pointing to the spot despite replays suggesting contact was minimal.

Wijnaldum stepped up and coolly sent Lloris the wrong way as he confidently converted from 12 yards.

Lloris denied Sissoko one-on-one as the Newcastle onslaught continued, but he could do nothing to prevent Aarons from rifling a Janmaat cross into the top-right corner after Townsend struck the woodwork.

The rout was completed as Aarons returned the favour for Janmaat, slipping the Dutchman into make it 5-1 by steering beyond Lloris.

With Arsenal thrashing Aston Villa 4-0, Spurs were left to rue a return of just two points from their last four games as second spot and local bragging rights slipped from their grasp.

Stoke City 2-1 West Ham: Hammers face missing out on Europa League

    3172502_heroa.jpg

West Ham failed to secure a place in next season's Europa League after losing 2-1 at Stoke City as Mark Hughes' men came from behind to end the season by halting their six-game winless streak.

A victory would have confirmed European football for Slaven Bilic's men, but Southampton's victory over Crystal Palace coupled with the abandonment of Manchester United's match against Bournemouth due to a suspect package at Old Trafford leaves West Ham in seventh.

Michail Antonio gave West Ham the lead at the Britannia Stadium, finishing powerfully on the turn after a corner, but Stoke felt the winger handled the ball in the build-up.

Giannelli Imbula fired in from just outside the box soon after the interval and Andy Carroll suffered a groin injury, damaging his Euro 2016 selection hopes, while Glenn Whelan made two fantastic goalline clearances to keep Stoke level.

And Stoke snatched victory with two minutes left when Mame Biram Diouf powered in a header from Charlie Adam's corner.

Stoke's first win in seven games means they finish in the top half of the Premier League, while West Ham's five-game unbeaten run away from home in the Premier League ended.

Manuel Lanzini had an early effort blocked as the opening exchanges had a strong end-of-season feel before West Ham took the lead in controversial circumstances after 23 minutes.

Winston Reid kept Lanzini's deep corner alive and Antonio appeared to control the ball high on his arm before swivelling and firing in a low shot that beat Imbula on the line.

Diafra Sakho went close to scoring a second for West Ham when Antonio's centre picked him out at the back post, but the striker's shot hit the side netting.

Shay Given saved Sakho's scuffed shot easily after 35 minutes, then Bojan Krkic fired wide as Stoke struggled to get a foothold in the game.

West Ham were dominating even without the injured Dimitri Payet and Sakho should have doubled the lead five minutes after half-time from Antonio's pass, but Given made a good save.

And Sakho's profligacy in front of goal was then punished as the hosts levelled after 55 minutes.

Imbula found room outside the box and smashed a low drive across Darren Randolph, giving the goalkeeper no chance with the left-footed shot.

Carroll's slim chances of a call-up to England's Euro 2016 squad were then dealt a blow when the striker suffered a groin strain and had to be substituted.

Replacement Enner Valencia could have restored West Ham's lead after 69 minutes, but misjudged his header from Mark Noble's cross, directing the effort over the crossbar.

The visitors continued to push hard and Whelan made two brilliant goalline clearances in the space of three minutes.

Adam let fly from just inside his own half, Randolph backpedalling to tip the substitute's spectacular strike over, but Stoke did snatch maximum points with two minutes to go.

Adam's corner was perfectly flighted for Diouf to attack and power in an unstoppable near-post header.

Randolph went up for a free-kick in the seventh minute of added time and headed wide, meaning West Ham can now only qualify for Europe if Manchester United beat Palace in the FA Cup final next weekend.

:shocked:Police confirm controlled explosion at Old Trafford after Manchester United's abandoned match

    3173312_heroa.jpg

Greater Manchester Police has confirmed that a controlled explosion was carried out at Old Trafford after Manchester United's final Premier League match was forced to be abandoned.

Goal understands that more than one suspect package was found in the north-west section of the stadium - one of which was a pipe bomb discovered in the toilets of an executive suite.

United initially began evacuating both the Stretford End and the Sir Alex Ferguson Stand in response to the security threat discovered after 2pm.

An 'operation red code' alert was heard over the tannoy at Old Trafford during the evacuation.

Shortly after 3pm, United, on the advice of Greater Manchester Police, announced that the fixture was not going ahead and the stadium was fully evacuated.
United midfielder Ander Herrera gave an interview to Spanish radio station Cope from inside the dressing room during the evacuation.

"We are still in the dressing room it seems that we will be the last out of the stadium," he said. "We have been nervous and tense."
The Premier League has confirmed that the fixture will be rescheduled ‘as soon as practically possible’, with United due to face Crystal Palace in the FA Cup final at Wembley next Saturday.

Following Manchester City's 1-1 draw with Swansea City on Sunday, United are no longer able to qualify for the Champions League unless they score 19 goals without reply against Bournemouth.

Golden Boot: Harry Kane crowned Premier League top scorer

    2689402_heroa.jpg

Harry Kane has won the Premier League’s Golden Boot award after topping the division’s scoring charts despite failing to score on the final day of the Premier League season.

The race to be crowned top scorer saw Kane, Leicester City’s Jamie Vardy and Manchester City’s Sergio Aguero all go head-to-head on Sunday, with just one goal separating the trio.

But despite plenty of build-up, all three players failed to net on the final day of the season, meaning Kane’s tally of 25 goals was enough to seal the award.

The 22-year-old has now hit over 20 goals in two consecutive seasons and is the first Englishman to top the division’s scoring chants since Sunderland’s Kevin Philipps in 1999-2000.

Kane is unlikely to be in a celebratory mood, though, with Tottenham having lost 5-1 to Newcastle – their biggest defeat of the season – and slipping below rivals Arsenal in the league table.

:shocked:Police confirm bomb hoax at Old Trafford after Manchester United's abandoned match

    3173312_heroa.jpg

Greater Manchester Police has confirmed that the suspect package which forced Manchester United's Premier League match against Bournemouth to be abandoned was a hoax.

Old Trafford was fully evacuated shortly after 3pm on Sunday afternoon after a steward discovered a suspicious item in the north-west section of the ground.

Goal understands that the item, which was found in the toilets of an executive suite, looked similar to a pipe bomb.

Bomb disposal experts were called to Old Trafford to destroy the item in a controlled explosion.

In response to the initial security threat, United evacuated both the Stretford End and the Sir Alex Ferguson Stand before 2:50pm.

Shortly after 3pm, United, on the advice of the police, abandoned the game and ordered a full evacuation of the stadium.
The Premier League has confirmed that the match will be rescheduled ‘as soon as practically possible’, with United due to face Crystal Palace in the FA Cup final at Wembley next Saturday.

Following Manchester City's 1-1 draw with Swansea City, United can only reach next season's Champions League by beating Bournemouth by 19 clear goals.

Terry wants to stay at Chelsea next season

    johnterry-cropped_1f4rd5r28005x1lc1lph9r91bz.jpg

John Terry has reaffirmed his desire to finish his career at Chelsea, but has not confirmed whether he will sign a one-year contract extension.

The centre-back's current deal is set to expire next month and, on Friday, the club announced they had put forward an offer. However, Terry revealed the deal would see him take on a "different role" and subsequently needed careful consideration.

The captain was applauded by the Stamford Bridge faithful with the clock showing 26 minutes during their 1-1 draw with champions Leicester City on Sunday, a match he missed through suspension and in tribute to his service wearing the squad number 26.

Terry, who did not confirm whether he would accept the offer currently on the table, addressed supporters following the final whistle at the end of their last game of the Premier League season. He answered to chants from the stands calling for him to stay by saying: "We all want the same thing. I want to be here for the rest of my career, I've said that.

"We have a few days and I'll be speaking to the club. I want to stay, the club knows that, the fans know that."

The 35-year-old thanked the fans for sticking by the players during a title defence that ended with finishing 10th before insisting they will return to challenging at the top next term."This has been a difficult season, we are where we deserve to be in the league. The fans have stuck with us. Thank you," he continued.

"I can assure you we'll be back fighting for this title next year. On a personal note this has been tough for me, very emotional."Chelsea is my life, just like it is yours, and you've been a part of the best moments of my life in this stadium.

"Before I sign off I'd like to say a big thank you to Guus Hiddink. A great man for what he's done for this football club. He picked us up and he's just a really honest man."Terry also offered congratulations to Leicester on their title triumph, adding he was pleased London rivals Tottenham did not depose Chelsea.

"I would like to wish Claudio Ranieri and Leicester congratulations from me. I am delighted they have won it and I am glad Tottenham haven't," he said.
