Liverpool 2-1 West Brom: Mane and Coutinho move Reds up to second

    hd-liverpool-celebration_1okqil31f1q1111kk40bxnlhui.jpg

Goals from Sadio Mane and Philippe Coutinho earned Liverpool a 2-1 success over West Brom at Anfield, although Gareth McAuley's late consolation denied Jurgen Klopp's side a place at the Premier League summit.

Earlier on Saturday, Arsenal and Tottenham had been held to 0-0 draws by Middlesbrough and Bournemouth respectively, while the remaining top-four side, Manchester City, host Southampton on Sunday.

As a result, Liverpool came into this clash knowing a victory by two goals or more would send them top - no easy task against a usually stubborn Baggies outfit.McAuley's strike from a corner with nine minutes remaining meant Liverpool must settle for second, behind Arsenal on goal difference, but Klopp will surely be satisfied with a run that has seen them take 16 points from their past six outings.

The only blip in that run came on Monday when Klopp's side failed to break down a defensive-minded Manchester United in a drab 0-0 draw, but on this occasion they were able to find a breakthrough and open the game up in the 20th minute when Mane finished off a superb sweeping move.

Coutinho added the second 10 minutes prior to half-time following a shanked clearance from Albion goalkeeper Ben Foster and although McAuley's goal set nerves on edge, the hosts' impressive opening to 2016-17 continued.

After the draw with United, Klopp suggested Jose Mourinho's men would be the ideal opponents to prepare them for the visit of Tony Pulis' side and as expected, the visitors were content to drop men behind the ball in the opening exchanges.

But they were undone by a fine team move as James Milner's pass was dummied by Coutinho to Emre Can, who fed Roberto Firmino and the Brazilian's perfectly clipped cross was volleyed home first time at the back post by Mane. The second arrived 15 minutes later on the back of Foster's miscue.

The high, spinning ball bounced away from Darren Fletcher for Mane to feed Coutinho, and the Brazilian cut inside on his right foot and fired inside Foster's near post.

West Brom survived without further damage until the break, but were under pressure again following the restart and only a fine block from McAuley denied Firmino a third.Foster went some way to making amends for his part in the second by producing a superb save to keep out Dejan Lovren's header and another heroic block - this time from Jonas Olsson - thwarted Can in the 66th minute.

Nacer Chadli had scored four times in his past four Premier League outings but stabbed over from an excellent opening four minutes later - the visitors' first attempt of the game.

West Brom did find a way through when a loose ball from a corner dropped perfectly for McAuley to fire home, and although Foster's fine save from Firmino and Georginio Wijnaldum shooting narrowly wide meant Liverpool were denied the chance to go top, it did little to alter the outcome.

Bayern Munich 2-0 Borussia Monchengladbach: Vidal and Costa fire hosts to victory

    bayern-munich-monchengladbach_zhhent9il4hv1m1szz0jg1abm.jpg

Bayern Munich showed no sign of their recent struggles against Borussia Monchengladbach as they romped to a 2-0 victory in Bundesliga.

Gladbach had been unbeaten in their last four meetings with the league leaders and delayed their title celebrations towards the end of last term, but there was no joy on Saturday.

Instead, it was hosts Bayern celebrating as Arturo Vidal and Douglas Costa took advantage of some sloppy defending to give Carlo Ancelotti's side a two-goal cushion after half an hour.

Vidal's powerful header gave Yann Sommer no chance in the Gladbach goal and Costa also netted on his first league start of the season.

Having dominated the opening period, the second half lacked a similar intensity as Bayern cruised to the win, with Andre Hahn having Gladbach's best attempt only to be denied by the crossbar.Victory extends Bayern's lead at the summit to three points from Hertha Berlin - who beat Cologne 2-1 - while Gladbach remain stationed in mid-table.

The lively Arjen Robben posed the greatest threat in the opening exchanges as he glided past defenders when cutting in from the right, although his two attempts were poorly executed.

Full-back Rafinha was also off target after nine minutes when his volley rustled the side-netting after neatly lifting the ball over Jannik Vestergaard inside the penalty area.

Any wastefulness from the hosts was rendered irrelevant in the 16th minute as Vidal ghosted in between Nico Elvedi and Julian Korb to place a bullet header beyond Sommer - the keeper only able to get fingertips to the Chilean's effort.

Bayern's lead was doubled just after the half hour as Costa beat Sommer with a low drive, with Gladbach's defending again far from impressive.

Robben and David Alaba worked an opening on the left before the latter delivered a deep cross that eventually found its way to Costa - Oscar Wendt having slipped when trying to clear - and the Brazilian made no mistake, celebrating the goal by taking a selfie with a fan in the crowd.

Not much changed after the restart as Gladbach gave up a lot of possession to their hosts, limiting their openings to rare counter attacks that failed to even worry Manuel Neuer.

As the hour approached Robben should have got the goal his performance deserved as a low Costa cross found him unmarked inside the penalty area. However, instead of taking a touch, he shot first time and blazed over.

And Gladbach nearly made them pay after 71 minutes as Hahn rattled the woodwork with an acrobatic effort from Korb's deep cross - the visitors' first and only shot to worry Neuer.

It failed to spark a Gladbach recovery, though, as Bayern ended their run of successive draws in the league with a comfortable win - while also being able to bring Costa and Robben off as they continue to make their way back after injury.

Luis Enrique: Iniesta is out for weeks, it's a serious injury

    andres-iniesta-barcelona-injured_m9xmnogtygom11ycw9r467c2y.jpg

Barcelona boss Luis Enrique has confirmed that Andres Iniesta is likely to miss a number of weeks as a result of a knee injury sustained against Valencia. The Spain international was carried off on a stretcher in obvious pain after a challenge from Enzo Perez during the first half of Barca's 3-2 Liga win at Mestalla on Saturday.

The club later confirmed he had sustained damage to the lateral collateral ligament of his right knee, with initial reports in his homeland suggesting he will not play again until 2017.

Luis Enrique says further tests will be carried out on Sunday, but admitted that the problem looked "serious", while he questioned how Perez escaped without even a yellow card.

"It was a game where a huge amount happened," he told Barca TV. "The worst thing was the injury to Andres in an incident that everyone on the bench could see very clearly."He added in a news conference: "I explained perfectly earlier. It's a clear incident in which we saw the player get injured, and there was no yellow card. Tomorrow we'll see the severity of the injury but, yes, it'll be weeks. It's a serious one."

The visitors snatched the win through Lionel Messi's 94th-minute penalty - his second goal of the match - after Luis Suarez had levelled matters at 2-2 following two goals in quick succession from Barca loanee Munir El Haddadi and Rodrigo.

Luis Enrique hailed his side's determination to fight for the win after they surrendered their advantage in a "crazy" start to the second half."The game had various phases. We started very well, we were able to create some superiority at 1-0 but then they drew level," he said.

"At the start of the second half, we had a crazy five minutes. We were lucky to get back to 2-2. We lost some control with our desire to win but in the end the team showed the desire to overcome adversity.Twitter reacts to Iniesta's injury"It was a Valencia-Barca in keeping with the tradition of this game."

Luis Enrique admitted he was surprised to see Messi drill his penalty low to the right of goalkeeper Diego Alves, who holds the record for spot-kick saves in LaLiga, with 19 from 37 faced."He created some doubt last season and against him is Alves, who seems huge when he's in goal," he said.

"I thought he would shoot to the other side, others said he would go down the middle, and in the end he chose the side he wanted. He assumed the responsibility and it's a glorious feeling."

AC Milan 1-0 Juventus: Locatelli stunner sees off champions

    manuel-locatelli-serie-a-ac-milan-v-juventus-221016_hqqogbrtolxp1a6amqa80im0f.jpg

Manuel Locatelli's stunning strike earned AC Milan a 1-0 victory over Serie A leaders Juventus, who controversially had a Miralem Pjanic goal ruled out at San Siro.

Teenage midfielder Locatelli fired a sensational effort beyond Juve goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon in the 65th minute, with Vincenzo Montella's side consequently moving to within two points of their table-topping opponents on his 200th Serie A match as a head coach.

The champions may feel hard done by, though, with Pjanic seeing a goal chalked off in the first half due to a debatable offside decision against Medhi Benatia.

After losing Paulo Dybala to injury, the midfielder's 35-yard free-kick flew beyond the outstretched leg of Leonardo Bonucci, who raced in from a legal position, to nestle in the back of the net.

The goal initially stood, but referee Nicola Rizzoli consulted with his assistants following protests by the Milan players and pulled play back for Benatia's infringement, despite him not appearing to have interfered with play.

It was a bitter defeat for Massimiliano Allegri's side, whose only prior loss this term came in the same stadium when they were beaten 2-1 by Inter.

It took Juve less than a minute to test Gianluigi Donnarumma, but Dybala's attempt to guide Alex Sandro's cross inside the near post was held by the goalkeeper.

The Turin giants looked in control but received a warning when Carlos Bacca, who replaced Gianluca Lapadula in the side after being rested for the 3-1 win over Chievo last weekend, fed Suso, whose curling attempt was pushed behind by Gianluigi Buffon.

Dybala forced another save from Donnarumma before being forced off in the 33rd minute after appearing to tweak his right hamstring while breaking forward and attempting an audacious long-range strike, with Juan Cuadrado replacing him.

Pjanic thought he had given the visitors the lead three minutes later when his 35-yard free-kick flew into the back of the net, but after the visitors had celebrated the goal, it was then overturned due to the offside controversy.Juve returned from half-time motivated to break the deadlock and Gonzalo Higuain fired wide from the right-hand side of the box.

Their positive impetus soon subsided, though, with Milan punishing them midway through the second half. Locatelli collected Suso's pass and took one touch on the right-hand side of the box before rifling a shot across Buffon and in off the bar.

Allegri's team were unable to create any clear opportunities as they attempted to restore parity, with Higuain receiving minimal service in a laboured performance in front of goal. The introduction of Mario Mandzukic, back from an adductor injury, with 15 minutes remaining failed to galvanise the visitors further.

But Donnarumma did have to produce a stunning save to keep a 25-yard strike from Sami Khedira out of the top corner in the fifth minute of stoppage time, as Juve finally registered their first shot on target of the second half.

That meant Milan's brilliant start to the campaign continued with a first top-flight win over Juve since November 2012 - ending a run of seven consecutive top-flight defeats in the fixture.

:love:Manchester United great Gary Bailey says David de Gea is among world's best

    hd-david-de-gea_1d2ti2aypgdem1ox5t7wgiqe4u.jpg

Former Manchester United goalkeeper Gary Bailey believes the current No.1 at Old Trafford, David de Gea, is deserving of a standing alongside the best performers in his chosen position.

The Spaniard has excelled for the Red Devils in recent years, offering stability and security between the sticks during a difficult period for the 13-time Premier League champions.

Speculation regarding a potential move elsewhere, regular alterations to the personnel in front of him and managerial changes in the dugout have completely unfazed the 25-year-old, who has merely continued to get on with his job.

His form has been so impressive that many now consider him to be a serious contender for the title of the world’s best shot-stopper.

Bailey would not disagree with that sentiment, with the ex-England international of the opinion that De Gea is operating at a level which places him alongside the likes of Bayern Munich’s Manuel Neuer, Juventus’ Gianluigi Buffon and Chelsea’s Thibaut Courtois.

He told Inside United: "De Gea and Courtois are right up there with the top five in the world right now. No question.

"David still amazes me. I was the same age when I was in the team and I felt the need to shout and scream, and try to control people around me. He's just so relaxed - he doesn't get uptight, things go in, he looks at one or two players and then gets on with the game.

"He's got a fantastic temperament and is a wonderful keeper, who makes saves when he needs to. Courtois - okay, he didn't have the best of seasons last year but he's also a wonderful keeper and a bit taller and that bit stronger in the air. So, alongside Manuel Neuer and Gianluigi Buffon, they've got to be up there with the best in the world."

De Gea and Courtois will go head-to-head at Stamford Bridge on Sunday, with United boss Jose Mourinho taking his current charges to the stomping ground of his former employers.

Both men could have a key role to play in the contest, with there set to be plenty of attacking talent on show looking to find the back of their respective nets.

Manchester United forward Rashford says mentality the key in Chelsea battle

    rashford-cropped_8xc35iztq8781nrlf36zay31y.jpg

Marcus Rashford says Manchester United must replicate the intensity they showed against Liverpool when they travel to Stamford Bridge to face Chelsea.

United claimed a hard-fought 0-0 draw at Anfield on Monday, nullifying the threat of Liverpool's in-form forwards – though the defensive mindset of Jose Mourinho's side has drawn some criticism. And England striker Rashford believes United must show the same desire and grit when Mourinho faces his former club on Sunday.

"If we can go there, produce a good team performance and hopefully get the three points, that will give us a good boost and could set us up for the rest of the season," the 18-year-old told MUTV.

"You never know how the game is going to be until you get out there but I think it's important we get into the game and start fast.

"That's what we did against Liverpool - we got into their faces and showed we weren't going to be pushed around, and we need to go there with a similar attitude. The bigger the games are, the better for us.

"We have to try to keep them quiet and give ourselves the freedom to play as well, but it's a difficult thing to do, especially away from home, so we have to have the same mentality and mindset as we did at Anfield."In these games, it's a lot to do with one-v-ones and, if you get the better of your opponent, maybe you get the better of the game."

United sit seventh heading into Sunday's clash, two points behind Chelsea, and Rashford added that Antonio Conte has inherited a similar situation at Chelsea as Mourinho did at Old Trafford.

"They've been a bit up and down but the manager has got them in a good shape and structure, and I think they've got a good plan of where they want to be," he added."They've got a very strong squad, I think they're in a similar situation as us."

Barcelona confirm Iniesta ruled out for up to eight weeks

    hd-andres-iniesta-barcelona_15zj7k3q57eoy1njetamgnktk4.jpg

Barcelona have confirmed Andres Iniesta will be out of action for up to eight weeks with a knee injury, making him a major doubt for the first Clasico of the season against Real Madrid.

Iniesta had to be removed from the pitch on a stretcher after sustaining damage to the lateral collateral ligament of his right knee in a heavy challenge from Enzo Perez in the first half of Saturday's 3-2 victory over Valencia. The Spain international appeared to jar his leg as Perez slid in with a robust tackle after 14 minutes at Mestalla and was replaced by Ivan Rakitic.

Barca earlier confirmed Iniesta had sustained ligament damage and would undergo further tests to find out the full extent of the injury upon his return to Catalonia. The midfielder has now been ruled out of action for up to two months.

An official club statement read: "Andres Iniesta has a partial injury to the lateral collateral ligament in his right knee. Time out of action is approximately six to eight weeks."

Iniesta is now a major doubt for the Clasico against Madrid at Camp Nou on December 4, which is almost exactly six weeks away.

It is another blow for Luis Enrique, who lost key defensive duo Jordi Alba and Gerard Pique to short-term injuries in the 4-0 victory over Manchester City.In the aftermath of the win over Valencia, Luis Enrique vented his frustration that Perez was not shown a yellow card.

He said: "It's a clear incident in which we saw the player get injured, and there was no yellow card. It's a serious one [injury]."

:)Mourinho: I won't be the Special One if I don't win titles at Man Utd

    jose-mourinho_1bh1pp6zjnhbc1xwam97uqkvxy.jpg

Jose Mourinho has admitted there will be "nothing special" about him if he fails to bring silverware to Manchester United. The Portuguese coach famously dubbed himself 'the Special One' upon arriving in the Premier League with Chelsea in 2004.

Mourinho accepts that more success, however, is the only way he will be considered as such by Red Devils supporters as he attempts to win their first championship since Sir Alex Ferguson's retirement.

"Connections start before titles are won but it is success that brings empathy between the supporters and managers and makes that connection become really strong," Mourinho told reporters."I have a three-year contract here [at United] and if I am here for three years the people will know that I have given everything to the club and that I am a professional and dedicated coach who gives himself 24 hours a day to United.

"But if, at the end of the three years, I don’t win a single piece of silverware for them, they will say 'great guy, good coach, we like him, but we feel nothing special about him'."Chelsea have won four Premier League titles in their history. Three of them were with me and the other one was won by the team I left behind.

"I took them to Wembley, I took them to Cardiff, I took them to cup finals. So there is a connection based on empathy – but built on success."

Mourinho went on to thank Chelsea supporters for the way they treated him through good and bad during his time in west London but insisted he is now "100 per cent United".

"In the end at Chelsea, when the last two or three months of my time at the club were a period of bad results, the fans kept that empathy and remembered our relationship," he said.

"That is something I don't forget and that is something I will always be grateful to them for because, with me, they have always behaved in a fantastic way."I have loved every club that I have worked for. I have this professional heart that makes me connect 101 per cent with my club.

"When I was growing up in Portugal, I was not a born a Porto supporter – but I still gave my life to Porto. I also gave my life to Madrid, I gave my life to Inter and I gave my life to Chelsea."Now I give my life to United. That is my professional nature. So I am 100 per cent United now."

Murinho might have been a good coach when he managed porto, inter & chelsea in the first spell, but now he's a poor coach who favours some players for no reasons to see at all. Why the hell would you play Fellani with Pogba after all the failings of the duo in the EPL over choosing carrick to join with pogba which had good results. (ex - fenerbache game) And where is Shaw? Why ain't he playing instead of young? And martial? To be honest ibrahimovic hasn't been great at all. He's too slow to counter attack and doesn't do much other than in the box. Specially against fast paced teams like chelsea. And where is Martial or Mkhitaryen? Murinho has no brain at all now.

A poor show by man Utd. The defence has been poor like always of course
