Sarri: Abramovich wanted me for attacking football

Chelsea head coach Maurizio Sarri believes that his club's owner Roman Abramovich brought him in specifically to play his attacking brand of football, but added that he has worked so tirelessly on the training ground, that he has barely seen any of London.

Sarri arrived at Stamford Bridge late after Chelsea chased him over the summer, as they struggled to find an agreement with Napoli's president Aurelio De Laurentiis over bringing him into the club.Napoli ultimately let Sarri go, but the relationship between both parties has subsequently become strained, as a war of words is waged in the media.

The length of the negotiations left Sarri with a very short pre-season to work in, having arrived a week after many first team players, while the World Cup also had a major impact.

Abramovich will have wanted Sarri sooner but he will be happy to have gotten his target over the summer to replace Antonio Conte. The switch from Conte to Sarri sees a complete overhaul in the style of football and Sarri thinks that the rich Russian oligarch understands the requirement for patience, despite not being known to wait for success.

“But I think he [Abramovich] knows it [will take time]," Sarri told reporters. "If they called me 40 days ago, I think it's because they wanted to see my football here. It's not easy, but I have to try.

"It's important if I like it, first of all. I want to enjoy, I want to have fun, press the ball. Then, if I enjoy the game, maybe the supporters enjoy the game. And I think that, if the team enjoy the game, they'll have a lot of opportunities to win the match.“It will take two or three months. But I think, in this case, with this team, there are very intelligent players.”

Sarri has his side ready for a visit to Newcastle United where Chelsea suffered disappointment at the very end of last season by losing 3-0. The loss saw them go into the Europa League after finishing fifth, rather than the Champions League as the club had targeted, and Sarri will lead his team in the less prestigious European competition in September.

One of the 59 year old's biggest concerns as he adjusts his team, is to improve the defending in the high pressing system he imposes on the players. Sarri isn't known for compromising his beliefs and spoke about his challenge, after last week growing worried with a 15 minute period against Arsenal, where he side lost control of the game.

“I don't know. Maybe I have to do that [compromise my beliefs in future], but I am better when I play my football, my way of football," he added. "I don't know if I'm as good of a coach if I teach another way of football.

"It's not so easy to change the player's mind [when defending too]. If you are used to defending by looking at the man and I ask you to defend by looking only at the ball, I think if you are 18 it's maybe easier. If you are 28 and, for 10 years, you've played the other way, it's not so easy. So you have to change completely the mind.

“I think it's better. I think, if you arrive to think in this way, then it's very easy. It depends only on you. You are not depending on the opponent. I think it's very easy and if you defend by looking only at the ball, you can stay very high up the pitch. In the other way, you defend on the movements of the opponent."

Sarri's defensive plan doesn't involve only pressing. He likes to see very little distance between his defence and his attack, when the other side have possession.
The forward line will normally be no more than 15 metres away from the defensive line and Sarri rubbished the assertion that his players are struggling to cope physically with his methods.

“No. I don't think so. If you defend forward, you only have to do 10-15m," Sarri continued. "If you have the ball inside, you have to back for 50m. I think we can press for 90 minutes, only if we have the right distances between the players, we stay very high. Otherwise it's a problem, of course.

"In the last part of the first half against Arsenal we lost distances, so it was impossible to press and recover the ball. We were immediately in trouble. But I think we can do it for 90 minutes."

Sarri has been very busy since arriving into Stamford Bridge as he immidiately offered advice on transfer targets, getting Jorginho simultaneously upon signing and then Kepa Arrizabalaga and Mateo Kovacic later in the transfer window.

He also took the club to their overseas pre-season tour, which began in Australia, before coming back to Europe. Sarri was asked whether he has found time to enjoy London since coming to the club, but he admits he has only managed to go for one walk in the city, in his first 40 days in charge.

“I am not able to switch off," he concluded. "I have spent only one day in London in 40 days here. But the moment was difficult. We had to prepare the season without players, so it was difficult the first part of the season for me. But I'm not able to switch off, me. Never.

"I am thinking always about my team and about the match, or the next match. It's my way to work in football. After the match with Arsenal I remained in London, only a long walk in the centre of London. And I found a lot of people of Naples.”

Newcastle United 1 Chelsea 2: Yedlin own goal seals controversial win

    4F6B70B100000578-6100065-image-a-5_1535302905038.jpg

DeAndre Yedlin's late own goal ensured Maurizio Sarri's perfect start to life in the Premier League continued as Chelsea beat Newcastle United 2-1 in a frantic and controversial finish.

Chelsea had appeared to have adapted quickly to Sarri's famously expansive style of play, winning their opening two league games after being well beaten by Manchester City in the Community Shield.

However, they came up against a stubborn and well-organised defence at St James' Park and struggled to break Newcastle down despite a dominance of possession that bordered on the ridiculous.

The visitors were handed a huge boost 14 minutes from time as referee Paul Tierney ruled Fabian Schar had fouled Marcos Alonso in the box, despite replays suggesting the Switzerland international had got his foot to the ball.

Eden Hazard, making his first start for Chelsea since helping Belgium to the semi-finals of the World Cup, dispatched a confident penalty, although Martin Dubravka got a fingertip to the ball.

It was Chelsea's turn to feel aggrieved when Yedlin appeared to elbow Olivier Giroud in the build-up to Joselu heading a near-post equaliser, but the American handed Chelsea three points by inadvertently turning in Marcos Alonso' first-time effort.

Hazard twice required treatment in the opening 20 minutes but was able to continue and flashed an effort wide of the right-hand post.Newcastle eventually offered a response as Salomon Rondon headed wide, yet Pedro spurned two chances to put Chelsea ahead, with Hazard continuing to pull the strings for no reward.

Azpilicueta was able to test Dubravka shortly after the restart as he latched on to a lay-off from Pedro. Antonio Rudiger then blasted against the crossbar with a vicious long-range effort before Hazard made the most of Tierney's contentious call.

Giroud was soon the man asking questions of the officials after Joselu's header just beat the hand of Courtois, yet the World Cup winner played a part in the decider as Alonso latched on to his knock down and Yedlin made the crucial error.

Fulham 4 Burnley 2: Mitrovic brace helps Cottagers get off the mark

Jean Michael Seri and Andre Schurrle both scored their first goals as Fulham got off the mark on their return to the Premier League with a 4-2 win over Burnley.

Aleksandar Mitrovic also netted a three-minute brace for Slavisa Jokanovic's side, who confidently shrugged off the disappointment of successive defeats back in the top flight to pick up all three welcome points.

Jeff Hendrick struck six minutes after Seri's spectacular early opener and a close-range James Tarkowski finish late in a five-goal first half gave Burnley hope they could yet add to the lone point they have managed in a sluggish start to the new season.

But Mitrovic scored twice with his head in between Burnley's goals and a deserved late strike for Schurrle left Sean Dyche – who knows his side are teetering on the edge of Europa League elimination after a 3-1 first-leg defeat at Olympiacos on Thursday - with mounting problems to solve.

An entertaining first half began with Seri lashing a rising 25-yard drive beyond Joe Hart in the fourth minute, only for Hendrick to hastily respond by capping off a counter-attack at the second attempt.

Burnley are not the defensive force of last season, though, and were unable to stop Fulham scoring twice from crosses in quick succession, Mitrovic proving a menace with commanding headers past Hart.

The Clarets did battle back into the contest when Ben Mee rose to meet a corner that led to Tarkowski turning home amid suspicion of offside four minutes prior to the interval.

Fulham responded to the challenge by continuing to control possession after the break and Schurrle, denied earlier by the crossbar, eventually got his reward in the 83rd minute, the Germany international drilling home the rebound from Mitrovic's initial attempt to seal the result.

'Disgrace!' - Pique & Barca slam Valladolid pitch as La Liga promise disciplinary action

Barcelona's coach and players were furious with the condition of the pitch at Real Valladolid's Estadio Jose Zorrilla on Saturday, as La Liga president Javier Tebas promised disciplinary action.

Ousmane Dembele's goal in the 57th minute earned all three points in a 1-0 win for the reigning champions, but concerns about the state of a recently re-laid surface threatened to overshadow the contest.

And after a week in which prominent players threatened strike action in opposition to plans to stage a La Liga match in the United States, defender Gerard Pique was pointed in his criticism.

"Before we sell our product abroad, we'd do well to look here first," he said."They want to take our players to the US, but the state of the grass today was a disgrace."The players risked getting injured. It was very regrettable and I hope action is taken on the matter."

Tebas tweeted late on Saturday, saying: "The state of [Estadio] Jose Zorrilla's turf did not meet the minimum conditions required for a COMPETITION such as @LaLiga, evidently [we are] proceeding to open the corresponding disciplinary file..."Barca coach Ernesto Valverde had earlier said: "There was a very clear issue with the pitch.

"I haven't seen the grass lift like it did for a long time. It's something that has to make us think, given we want to take the league elsewhere."I don't think it made for a good spectacle. It's not only about winning but also the fans enjoying themselves. Luckily there were no injuries."

Pique's Barca and Spain team-mate Sergio Busquets was also vociferous in his criticism of the conditions.

"With the pitch being the way it was, it was very difficult to play on it," he said.
"It's regrettable that the best league in the world has to be played on a pitch like that. There were areas of it that looked like a beach."It's also incredible that the league didn't send anyone to review it, just four days after it was re-laid."

Zaha could play for Real Madrid - Souness

Crystal Palace's Wilfried Zaha is good enough to play for Real Madrid, according to three-time European Cup winner Graeme Souness.Ivory Coast international Zaha agreed a new deal at Selhurst Park earlier this month that runs until 2023, having last season helped prevent his boyhood club from dropping into the Championship.

Yet Souness has made the bold claim Zaha should be playing for a club accustomed to challenging for Europe's major honours, rather than one involved in relegation fights.

Zaha, 25, has previously spent two years at Manchester United, for whom he made just two Premier League appearances, yet ex-Liverpool, Sampdoria and Rangers player Souness is convinced the Palace forward is worthy of consideration from Barcelona or Real Madrid."I think he's sensational," Souness told Sky Sports.

"I can see him playing for Real Madrid, that's how good he is. I think there's maybe a handful of players who have got the change of direction and balance that he does, and I think he should get more penalties, he isn't a diver.

"I think he's got a unique talent and with the utmost respect to Crystal Palace - and maybe he's been scarred by the experience at Manchester United - he's ready for a big, big club, the biggest clubs.

"If he stays at Palace he's going to end up with no trophies and think, 'What if'."I think now he's ready. Even for the big two in Spain, I think both of them would welcome him with open arms, he's a door opener, and there isn't too many of those players around.

"He's unique in our football. He's in that league, he's got the stuff that gets you on the edge of your seat."

Girona 1 Real Madrid 4: Penalties help pull Madrid out of a hole

    4F6C86F500000578-6100525-image-a-25_1535320010083.jpg

Real Madrid benefited from two penalties as they came from behind to beat Girona 4-1 on Sunday, while Gareth Bale maintained his hot goalscoring form.

Madrid suffered their first away defeat of the 2017-18 season at Montilivi and it looked set to be another uncomfortable outing when Borja Garcia gave the home side the lead after 16 minutes.

But Madrid turned the scoreline on its head with the help of careless tackles from Marc Muniesa and Pere Pons, allowing Sergio Ramos and Karim Benzema to convert a spot-kick apiece either side of the break.

Bale added a third in the 59th minute, with Benzema making absolutely sure of the win with a goal that puts Madrid above rivals Barcelona after two matches of the LaLiga campaign. It was Madrid who made the early running, with Benzema finding the net after eight minutes only to be denied by the offside flag.

Isco could not sort his feet out in time to apply the finish to a squared Marco Asensio pass and Girona punished the visitors for their profligacy with the opening goal.

Anthony Lozano's shot was blocked in the box but the ball fell kindly for Garcia, who kept his cool to turn onto his right foot and fire high into Keylor Navas' net.But the home side threw away their advantage six minutes from the break, Muniesa bringing down Asensio - who was running away from goal – inside the penalty area.

With Cristiano Ronaldo now gone, spot-kick duties fell to captain Ramos, whose delicate flick down the middle deceived goalkeeper Bono.Madrid had another chance from the spot seven minutes into the second half - this time Benzema scoring from 12 yards out after Asensio was hacked down by Pons.

Almost an hour had passed by the time Madrid got their first goal from open play, with Bale slotting beyond Bono to stretch his LaLiga scoring run to a career-best six matches.

Benzema's second of the contest arrived 10 minutes from time to put the result beyond doubt, the French striker tucking home a Bale cross to round off the victory.

Borussia Dortmund 4 RB Leipzig 1: BVB come from behind to make winning start

    4F6BCC5800000578-6100775-image-a-5_1535322727343.jpg

Axel Witsel scored with a bicycle kick as Borussia Dormund came from behind to kick off their Bundesliga season with a 4-1 victory over RB Leipzig.

Witsel - a close-season acquisition from Tianjin Quanjian - had already scored on debut in the DFB-Pokal on Monday and further endeared himself to the club's fans as they got their league campaign under way.Jean-Kevin Augustin gave Leipzig the lead in the opening minute, sliding a shot beyond Roman Burki after a defensive mix-up by the hosts.

However, Mahmoud Dahoud pulled Dortmund level 20 minutes later when he adjusted his body brilliantly to head home a left-wing cross.Marcel Sabitzer headed into his own net to hand Dortmund the lead five minutes from half-time, and Witsel's overhead kick from close range made it 3-1 at the break.

The second half looked set to pass without another goal being scored until Marco Reus capped off a counter attack by slotting past Gulacsi in stoppage time to record his 100th Bundesliga goal.

The result will come as a boost to new Dortmund boss Lucien Favre, coming as it did against one of the sides expected to join his in the hunt for Champions League places come the end of the season.

Mourinho lauds United fans but refuses to back squad

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho hailed the club's "fantastic" fans, though he refused to back his squad after a frustrating transfer window.

After signing Brazil international midfielder Fred, Portuguese full-back Diogo Dalot and reserve goalkeeper Lee Grant, Mourinho wanted a further two recruits but none arrived before the Premier League's transfer deadline amid a reported falling out with executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward.Mourinho has cut a frustrated figure since and the United boss was even more disgruntled following last week's shock 3-2 loss to Brighton and Hove Albion.

Speaking ahead of Monday's showdown against Tottenham at Old Trafford, Mourinho was asked if he was content with his squad and he replied, "You know my answer."

Mourinho added: "I do not need to answer because I do not even know sometimes why I am here because you [the media] know everything. During the week it looks like you show that you know everything then I come here and you ask me questions. It's a bit strange."

The Portuguese tactician, however, was far happier to discuss United's supporters heading into the Spurs clash in Manchester."The supporters were fantastic in both matches [against Leicester City and Brighton]," Mourinho said. "Not for me, for the team, which is the only thing that matters.

"In my career I was never selfish and thinking about myself, I was always a club man. That's what I am. I am really happy when the supporters support the team.

"Against Leicester, you can say in a normal situation because the team was playing well and was winning. To be supportive of the team against Brighton, where we didn't play well and lost the match, it gives you a fantastic feeling.

"I hope that feeling, the players also feel it and the players are ready to give them everything they have."

'Bale, Benzema or Ramos - I don't care who scores' - Lopetui relieved with Real Madrid comeback

Julen Lopetegui insists he is not concerned by who scores or how his Real Madrid side come by their goals, as long as they continue to find the target.

Madrid were 4-1 winners at Girona in La Liga on Sunday but had to rely on two penalties to overturn their hosts' lead before Gareth Bale and Karim Benzema netted goals from open play.

The result put to bed bad memories of last season, when Madrid – then led by Zinedine Zidane – were beaten 2-1 at Montilivi.

"The matches are complex and more so against good teams like Girona," said Madrid head coach Lopetegui."They scored a goal and then they had the chance to score a second."But then the two penalties, we put them away and in the second half we clearly deserved the win."

Asked about the importance of Bale, who scored Madrid's first from open play in the 59th minute after captain Sergio Ramos and Benzema had netted a spot-kick apiece, Lopetegui added: "The team is what matters.

"When it works, the goals have come in the form of Gareth, Karim or Sergio. The important thing is that they arrive, not who gets them. The team showed a collective spirit."In the first half we were in too much of a rush to attack, missing passes. When the score went in our favour we were much better.

"Girona pressed us in the first half and caused us some difficulties and we had to show good spirit to overcome that and get the three points."
