I have a better solution for you.!
    use IMAP!
for the protocol, select IMAP4 and put imap.gmail.com as the incoming mail server.
You will get sync'ed mailboxes and you will be able to recieve mails instantly when they arrive if you enable auto connect. (but the phone will be online most of the time) That might cost you about 200 per month on a dialog / mobitel connection (no access fee) if there are other users with different operators, please comment

Careful when enabling download all mail it will load your whole inbox to the phone.!!! Use "Download mail that comes from now on" in Gmail.

And another thing, you need two security certificates in order to send mail from the phone. not to recieve them :D
