Latest-Bosman to miss ICC World Twenty20

Injured South African opener Loots Bosman has been forced to withdraw from the ICC World Twenty20. Announcing the unfortunate news, Norman Arendse, the president of Cricket South Africa, said a replacement would be named only after it has been approved by the ICC's technical committee.

"The medical report left us with no alternative," Arendse said. "Loots has had a stand-alone record in this form of the game in South African cricket and he was desperately keen to play.

    update-Bopara ruled out of Twenty20

    oh another one:(

Ravi Bopara has been ruled out of the final two one-day internationals against India and the ICC World Twenty20 after dislocating and fracturing his right thumb during the fifth ODI, at Headingley, on Sunday.

He picked up the injury trying to take a return catch off Gautam Gambhir and immediately left the field one ball into his second over. He batted with the aid of a painkilling injection, but with a rapid turnover between the one-day series and the Twenty20 there was little chance of him recovering.

England will be able to name a replacement with Dimitri Mascarenhas probably topping the list as a like-for-like swap for Bopara. His availability for the five-match one-day series in Sri Lanka, starting on October 1, is still uncertain.

latest-Asif injured in dressing room spat

Pakistan's preparations for the ICC World Twenty20 have been rocked by an "incident" between Shoaib Akhtar and Mohammad Asif in Johannesburg which has led to the latter injuring his leg.

According to sources, the two were allegedly involved in a dressing-room spat which resulted in Asif being struck by a bat on his left thigh. The injury is not thought to be anything more serious than a bruise but a team investiga
tion into the matter is now pending and an announcement is expected tomorrow
    .

Ahsan Malik, the board spokesman currently traveling with the team, confirmed to Cricinfo that there was a row though he refused to expand on the details. "There was an incident between Shoaib and Asif in the dressing room soon after practice today. I cannot give any details on the matter. Asif has a bruise on his left thigh but he has had X-rays and has been cleared. He is fine as far as I am aware.

"The team management is carrying out an investigation into the matter and the results are expected tomorrow. We cannot say anything right now about sending players back or replacements," Malik added.

Whatever the actual detail of the matter, it is likely to have serious repercussions for Shoaib, who is already on probation for a disciplinary breach last month. He was fined for leaving a training camp in Karachi without seeking permission last month, but after two hearings the penalty was suspended and the bowler placed on a six-week probationary period.

McCullum to hand over the gloves

Gareth Hopkins will take over the wicketkeeping duties so Brendon McCullum can concentrate entirely on opening the batting when the ICC World Twenty20 starts next week. John Bracewell, the New Zealand coach, has predicted a shake-up of the New Zealand order which will feature Jacob Oram's power-hitting at No. 3.

The omission of Stephen Fleming from the 15-man squad meant New Zealand had to find a new partner for Lou Vincent at the top of the order. Bracewell said McCullum would open and act as a regular fieldsman, while Hopkins' ability as a "death hitting" specialist would make him useful down the list.

Oram will be promoted to No. 3 to add variety and strength to a line-up that is otherwise dominated by right-handers. "We want to use a left-hander in the top order and that's going to be Jacob Oram," Bracewell told NZPA.

"The angles a left-hander gives you in Twenty20, in my observations, can be useful in terms of hitting through the field rather than concentrating only on hitting over it. If he gets in, we know the power he can hit with, as sides go into the death quarter early in the matches."

New Zealand have two warm-up games against Australia and West Indies and Bracewell said the matches would be useful after a cold winter at home. "It is handy to have the quality of the Australians to test where we are at with their practice regimes and routines," he said.

"What we are trying to achieve is just get out on grass, hit out and try and simulate closely the format we will play in the matches." New Zealand's first game of the tournament is against Kenya on Wednesday.

latest Update-Shoaib to be sent home after incident

Shoaib Akhtar's troubled career has taken yet another twist following a decision by the Pakistan board to send him back from Pakistan's 15-man squad for the ICC World Twenty20 after a dressing-room scuffle in which he was alleged to have hit fellow fast bowler Mohammad Asif with a bat.

In a press release, Talat Ali, the Pakistan manager, who is currently with the team in Johannesburg, said, "The decision has been taken on an incident that took place yesterday [6th September] afternoon at the Centurion Park after the practice session of the Pakistan team. It was reported to us by Asif that Shoaib had hit him on his leg with a bat and abused him."

"The tour management committee made us aware of the incident last night and conducted an immediate inquiry into the event," Nasim Ashraf, chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), told Cricinfo. "They got their facts and decided Shoaib had to be sent back for allegedly hitting Mohammad Asif with a bat. The board was informed of the decision and we have approved it."

Further action against Shoaib has not been ruled out once he returns. The bowler was already on six weeks' probation following a breach of discipline last month after he left a training camp in Karachi without informing officials. Two hearings were held, after which it was decided that a monetary fine would be suspended pending his behaviour. Ashraf indicated that action would be likely.

"When the team management returns [from the tournament], the board will launch a full investigation and disciplinary hearing into the matter. Further action based on that is likely," Ashraf said.

    Rain threatens Cape Town matches

Nine of the 27 ICC World Twenty20 matches, scheduled in Cape Town, are in danger of being hampered by rain as the venue has received more than 100 millimetres of rain in August. The Australian reported that with 33mm of rain falling in the last ten days, the ground staff at the Newlands have been forced to prepare the pitch under a tent.

Newlands is scheduled to host three group matches for England, Australia and Zimbabwe, a Group A game between South Africa and Bangladesh, four out of 12 Super Eights games and one of the semi-finals.

The ICC had earlier planned to use SuperSport Park in Centurion as a back-up to Newlands but Steve Elworthy, Cricket South Africa's communications director, said it was now too late to plan such a shift. "There are no rest days, so you reach a point of no return," Elworthy said. "It's in the hands of the gods. We're backing the [Western Province] union and the plans they've put in place.

"It's a matter of managing the amount of water that gets onto the field, and Newlands has those contingencies covered."

Ticket sales for the two back-to-back matches in Cape Town on September 16 - potentially Australia against West Indies and South Africa against England if the group stages run as expected - have been very high.

While the Newlands groundsman, Bennett Hewe, said the pitch wouldn't offer much bounce, Shaun Pollock, the South African allrounder who was born in Cape Province, said the bowlers would enjoy it. "In Cape Town, in particular, there has been a lot of rain so we might find we get a few green seamers down there," Pollock said.
