Cadres of TMVP leader and MP Vinayagamurthy Muralitharan alias Karuna Amman and his deputy, Eastern Chief Minister Sivanesathurai Chandrakanthan alias Pillayan clashed yesterday to claim the ownership of a newspaper published in Batticaloa.

A team of about 30 armed Karuna cadres stormed the printing press located at No.39, Govinda Road in Batticaloa last evening and took control of it forcing the Pillayan supporters to flee from the building. However, about 100 armed cadres of Pilleyan later were stationed in surrounding areas.

The printing press is said to be the party press of the TMVP and was originally operated by those loyal to Karuna Amman. However, when Karuna Amman fled Sri Lanka on a false passport to the UK, arrested and was detained there Pilleyan group took over the press and had been running it until yesterday when Karuna Amman's armed cadres stormed the press. The police in Batticaloa have not taken any action though two armed groups have deployed their armed cadres in various places in Batticaloa town creating a tense situation.
