Correct... If you are talking about lightning - the short answer is NO. Even a UPS with surge protection will not be able to handle a lightning strike.
There are whole-house surge protection or suppressors that get installed at the point of service. Just as ArunaTelshan mentioned. These can protect you - also note that these devices have to be changed periodically.

A UPS will give you uninterruptible power in the event of a power failure.. It's useful for a desktop. A notebook has a battery in it. Mains power fails - the notebook keeps on working. It's not needed. But you can use a UPS with a notebook, or any equipment as long as the power rating is correct.
