    You can leave anytime.

A employment contract is not the same as any other legal agreement. Sri Lankan labour laws heavily favour employees.

Leave the job. Ask them to take you to courts. In the courts, THEY need to prove that you leaving the job caused financial damage to them. They can claim damages Only if they can prove it.

You can claim the job caused you psychological distress.

Even after doing all that, if they win the case, you can say you will pay 500 rupees a month and that's all you can afford.

Of course you will not get service letters or reference.

FYI I'm not a lawyer or HR manager but I managed a team of over 50 people when I was in SL and dealt with a lot of HR issues including court cases.

I really appreciate your help. Actually, my current employer won’t let me go. I have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and I want to leave this job. That’s why I might have to take the hard way.
My current workplace is causing me both psychological and physical stress.

If they decide to sue me, I also have grounds to sue them back.

    Thanks again.
