    Simple Example
A person who saves Rs.100 per year at the beginning of each year for 5 years in a bank account which pays 10% interest per year, needs find out the maturity value of his investment at the end of 5th year.

What you get here is a geometric series with common ratio equal to 1+r. Plug that into the geomwtric series summation formula and you get that formula.

For the original question think of it as 5 separate investments of Rs 100 for time periods of 5,4,3,2 and 1.

    So,
    1st investment = 100(1.1^5)
    2nd investment= 100(1.1^4)
    3rd investment= 100(1.1^3)
    4th investment= 100(1.1^2)
    5th investment= 100(1.1^1)

    Then,
    Total accumulated value = 1st in +2nd in+...+5th in

You get the same answer using the formula.

(Future value of annuity paid = (((1+r)^n) -1) / r) * (1+r)).
