Well!! Deciding whether Linux or windows is better completely depends on the circumstances.

Microsoft security strategy director Jeff Jones this week published a report comparing the security vulnerability profile for various high-profile operating systems in the 90 days of their existence. Surprisingly, Vista came out in front: Vista had 5 vulnerabilities in its first 90 days, one of them fixed, and one pending with a High severity rating. By comparison, XP had a total of 17 vulnerabilities in its first 90 days, 8 of which were rated High, when it shipped in 2001.

The surprises, however, come when you compare the non-Microsoft competition. Mac OS X 10.4, a darling of the press, actually suffered from 20 vulnerabilities in its first 90 days, 8 of which were rated High. Worse, OS X 10.4 still suffered from 17 publicly disclosed but unpatched vulnerabilities at the end of those 90 days. "The data doesn't support [Apple's] marketing," Jones writes. Linux fared even worse: Ubuntu 6.06 suffered from a whopping 71 vulnerabilities in its first 90 days, 27 of those rated High. And there were at least 29 unpatched vulnerabilities in that OS after the 90 day period ended. And so on. You can read the entire report (PDF), and look forward, as I am, to Jones' 6-month and 1-year updates.

so what? that doesn't mean that vista is secure than linux at all!!! why are u ppl so ignorant???

1.vista n OSx is closed source so it is much harder to discover vanus. but linux is open source and a lot of people do read the code so more vanus are discovered so quickly(which is very very very good!)

    2. More vanus discovered mean less vanus remaining. where in closed OS... there are so many vanus waiting to be discovered officially, but moving fast in the underground ;)
and making money for the bot owners + spammers... and the like

3.ubuntu have a LOT of programs bundled in it when compared to other OSs... and that stuff includes all the servers, music players, OOffice, Blender(3D ani...).....etc so it is very normal for it to have this number of vanus discovered!!! cause its not the just the linux kernel but all of the programs in the OS which is a very large number!.

    4. I don't know why most of the ppl still don't get it.... if u use vista then may god bless you. cause you are pawned in no time! but i know that still most of you will use MS stuff... well thats how the world goes, truth is not known to everyone.

Most of you choose the wrong pill ;)

Linux rocks, MS should be doing better marketing, this is funny shit!!! haha

Well, it's the detected vulnerabilities that matter. How can someone exploit one that's impossible to find
dude there are so many vanus in the wild out there! bad guys get to know about em much earlyir than the good guys... and MS.. oh well they get to know it even after the good guys... they will never give a fair rating to a bug... and they will try to hide stuff as much as possible.

and you know what? there are ppl who are way smarter than any ass in MS out there, and they do know of the zero day vanus....

shit... man if vanus aren't exploited just because they are not yet officially discovered... most of the serious stuff would have never happen in the info sec world...

Wonder how people get so many viruses. I've only had one infection and it was in 1998. No harm has come my way ever since. I come across trojans once in a while, but that too if I look for a crack.
hmmm... may be you don't know what you have? :) who knows..

if u didn't know you can optimiz linux for almost any hardware out there... cause you can get the source and compile it just to fit your hardware.... its the perfect OS then....

Yeah. But it's there in Vista. Besides, there are a lot of other user levels in Windows. Only Admin and Standard user is visible in control panel.
yeah like the hidden user accounts... thats a another bug dude!

I wasn't talking about UAC. You can do your normal work in a standard user account. Then XP is very less vulnerable to malicious software, because they can't do hard to the system (can't touch the registry, can't alter any system file etc. etc.)
*nix systems have user permissions built in to the system from the ground up unlike windows... this is one of main reasons that linux is much much safer than windows

UAC is ground up alright, but we'll have to wait for all the software to give pleasant experiences with it. If the programs are coded well, UAC should hardly prompt.

I know what I have. You stay away from crack sites and p0rn sites, and 99.999% of virus infections won't happen. By using a reputed web mail like gmail, infections from emails won't happen either.

You mean compile to the instruction set such as those private Firefox/Thunderbird builds?

I Started Using Vista Too. Superb OS
I wouldn't call it bug free. Hell no! There are certain things that I don't like in it, overall, it's better than XP for me. (and way better than Linux in terms of usability)

i don't know about UAC, no idea about it. but i know that most of the software never get well coded for a fact! especially the ones that runs in windows platform.

I don't know what you meant by that. However, the newer releases of certain software comply with UAC and give a better experience overall.

    Bug?
That is just to hide the unwanted stuff from n00bs :D
haha... MS seems to think that everyone are n00bs like em! but thats not the truth. go to the MS web site and search for this hidden user vanu... that default admin login in XP remmebmer?

now its fixed yeah, but a lot of people(like toshiba added two accounts with some defult passwords to my laps XP installation!) do add hidden accounts when the box leaves the factory.... so its not secure at all!

i wouldn't make it 99.999! it would make it 85%... there are bots scanning the whole net all the time!
