Colombo, 29 December, (Asiantribune.com):

Sarath Fonseka & Somawansa
In case Sarath Fonseka is defeated in the forthcoming Presidential election, there is a plan to take over the country by force, it is reliably learnt. The Contingency Plan - 2, that has now come to the fore, is to be put into operation just immediately after the elections results are announced on 27th January 2010, reliable sources say.

According to the plan -2, faithful soldiers are to surround the Temple Trees, the official residence of President Mahinda Rajapaksa, arrest the President and take him to a secret hideout. Also the plan includes a move to arrest and mercilessly kill Gotabaya Rajapaksa, Defence Secretary and other members of the President’s family.

Once the country is taken over in a bloody coup, those Army Attaches who are posted in several Sri Lankan Embassies overseas will assume position as Country’s Ambassadors and negotiate with America and European Union countries for the recognition of the new regime that took over the country.

As prelude to the bloody take over report emerging out of Colombo, it is revealed that Janatha Vimukthi Perumuna, the Marxist oriented pro-Sinhalese party has completed the first round of the house to house campaign in support of Sarath Fonseka’s candidature on one side and also gauged those who remain confidential to him, by meeting the retired Army soldiers, deserters, volunteer force members and one third of the regular soldiers.

It is learnt that retired Army personnel namely ex Colonel Kapila Ratnayake, Major General (retd.) Wijendra, Colonel (retd.) Gunaratne are working hand-in-hand with JVP to convince the former and present Army people to support Sarath Fonseka.

Sarath Fonseka, in his last days as the Army Commander, it is a well known fact to all those in the Army, that he was planning to take over the country, but when the Government sensed his secret plan, they removed him from the powerful position as the Sri Lankan Army Commander and posted him as the Chief of Defence Staff – a toothless position where he did not have any clout over the regular soldiers. Also the President in his capacity as Commander in Chief and Minister of Defence moved out all those Fonseka’s men who were placed in strategic position in the Army hierarchy in case he was ready to take over the country.

Knowing that his plan to take over the country suddenly fizzled out, he started negotiating with the opposition leaders – initially with Mangala Samaraweera and followed it by, Somwansa Amerasinghe, Ranil Wickremasinghe, Mano Ganesan, and also with R. Sampanthan who is the Parliamentary Group leader of the LTTE’s political formation, the TNA and others and finally he managed to become the common Presidential Candidate in the forthcoming Presidential election.

Somawansa Amarasinghe was eagerly awaiting for an opportunity to go closer with the Army leaders as they have miserably failed in their 1971 as well as 1988-89 insurrections to take over the country due to the stiffest resistance put forward by the Army.
