    President protects P.B. Jayasundara

    The President has instructed P.B. Jayasundara, Secretary to the Ministry of Finance to continue with the duties of the ministry state Financial Ministry sources.
    The Supreme Court found Mr. Jayasundara guilty of violating tender proceedings with regard to privatization of Marine Services while he was the head of Public Enterprises Reforms Commission (PERK) and fined him Rs.500,000.
    As soon as charges against Mr. Jayasundara were proved he paid the fine and he sent the letter of resignation from his posts at the Ministry of Finance and the Treasury to the President yesterday.

    President pardons Thonda

    CWC leader Arumugam Thondaman, who was found guilty of contempt of court and imposed a suspended sentence by the Nuwara Eliya Magisrate last morning, has been pardoned by President Mahinda Rajapaksa.
    Magistrate Amali Ranaweera imposed six months simple imprisonment, suspended for three years, on Mr. Thondaman, Minister Muttu Sivalingam and CWC Provincial Councilor, V. Radhakrishnan after they were found guilty of contempt of court yesterday.
    The order was issued following a complaint made by Mr. S. Sathasivam, the secretary of the Ceylon Workers United Front (CWUF). The court also imposed a fine of Rs. 1000 on each of the accused. They had been charged with forcibly entering the former CWC office at No 21, Lady McCallum Road, Nuwara Eliya.
    However, President Rajapakse under section 34 of the Constitution granted a pardon to Mr. Thondaman last evening.
