Using technology developed with Chinese car maker BYD, the new-generation plug-in hybrid Toyota Corolla is aiming for a driving range that could theoretically allow it to drive from Sydney to Melbourne and back, and then some.
An all-new Toyota Corolla is said to be unveiled in 2026, and hybrid technology from Chinese giant BYD could deliver a driving range around triple that of a conventional petrol drivetrain.
According to an unconfirmed report from
Japan's Best Car magazine â known for receiving insider information on future Toyota products â the next-generation Corolla will be offered with a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) variant, allowing the car to be driven using either petrol or battery power.
Best Car says Toyota is aiming for a range of 2100 kilometres from the Corolla PHEV, thanks to the introduction of a new highly-efficient 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine.
Unveiled recently as part of a new family of petrol four-cylinder engines, the 1.5-litre is to be made in both turbo and non-turbo variants, while a larger 2.0-litre turbocharged version will be fitted to sports models â rumoured to be the future Celica and MR2.
Best Car speculates the 1.5-litre turbocharged engine may target an increase in thermal efficiency of at least 5 percentage points compared to Toyota's current range of 'Dynamic Force' engines.
The Best Car report claims Toyota is aiming for the same driving range, and will release three plug-in hybrid models using BYD technology.
While the BYD models also use a 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder â producing 74kW and 126Nm â it's unknown at this stage if it's related to the Toyota engine unveiled recently.
The BYD Qin and Seal models are fitted with a 10.1kWh battery pack which powers a 120kW/210Nm electric motor, while a 15.87kWh battery can be optioned with a 160kW/210Nm electric motor.
