Here the solution that worked for me.

1. Ensure contacts are on mass-memory.
2. Delete SIM contacts
3. Check if you have any contact twice in your address book, delete them if you do.
4. Check if you have the same number in any two or more contacts (e.g. two people from the same company might have the same number) - delete until every contact has unique numbers only.
5. Copy all contacts to your SIM (I just copied Number, not all)

Try that. It won't update previous entries, but new entries should now work fine.

Not working still? Could be that international bug. A workaround is:

List the same number twice for every contact, once in international format, and once as local, e.g.

Mr Smith
Mobile: +447896546543 begin_of_the_skype_highlighting +447896546543 end_of_the_skype_highlighting
Work Mobile: 07896546543

And see if that helps.
