    Surprise!

Too close for comfort - now:

    ...and then

    Sunk!

    Squashed!

Street installation by D'Face on Brick Lane in London.

We got a story behind the image above: 2004 Hurricane Ivan is responsible for dropping the air conditioning unit on top of this car... The car was left in a parking lot like this for a year, as nobody wanted to pay the moving bill!
(thank you Nikki for this info)

    Attacked!

    Hanging loose!

Looks like it's an art installation, after all:

    Trimmed to size:

    Really Bad Parking:

    Stuck while off-roading:

Never leaving the road, but still stuck:

    Help, anyone? (and stop grinning)

    ...spring has sprung:

"Oops" happens to bicyclists & pedestrians too, of course:

    Accidents waiting to happen:

I guess this would explain the following picture:

    don't put yourself at risk:

here is my favorite: what is he thinking??
(although i suspect this is an ad, demonstrating traction?)

    UPDATE

It is indeed an ad for AUDI 4x4 drive. Thanks to your suggestions,
    here are some links:
See video ad here (even older ad is here)
Make sure to check out their site (with info on how they did it)

Short of the accidents in the making -
(like this one shot by one lucky driver in Moscow, who barely evaded this incoming truck)

    or this unknown CG simulation:

    (original unknown)

...the following photographs document mostly the bizarre aftermath of car & truck accidents, when it's not as easy to guess what caused them. Sometimes even police can't figure out the truth.

We'll start with the most mysterious ones. Every one of them may be turned into a hair-raising story:

How do you end up being run over by a plane?

    Update:
This was 2005 crash at Midway Airport in Chicago, where the airport is literally in the middle of a city, with no room (compared to O'Hare which has fields between the street and runways). In this case, the pilot decided to land during a snowstorm, hit a ton of snow on the runway and didn't have any time to stop before it was in the street. (more info)

What IS that thing, which totaled a nice bimmer?
(could be a promo for a movie, too) update: "The World is Not Enough" James Bond movie actually.

I'm sure there is a background story behind this unfortunate incident. After all you don't get your car totaled by a rolling concrete ball every day:

A steel wrecking ball came off its cable and rolled down a hill into the middle of a small town in Pennsylvania. (more info)

Thwarted by a cannon (in the middle of a busy street!) -

    other unknowns -

At least this accident has a known history:

Place: Gallup, New Mexico. An unidentified member of the tow truck company called to remove a truck from the overpass sits dangerously under the truck as he attempts to get a strap under it.

    Wrapped, squashed, and otherwise totaled:

This one already is a classic, still the story did not surface about it:

All that remains... and that's not much:

A dubious honor of being squashed by the world's biggest motorbike:

    Totally sunk

Battling the elements: flash floods, sink holes, trees felled by a strong wind:

Digging out your car after a snowstorm in Yakutsk, Russia:

    Acrobatic Parking

There is a deep sewer hole right under this nice car:

These accident photos were sent to us by Ricardo Jara from Vina del Mar, Chile:
    (nobody was hurt)

A bad day for the big shiny car on the right. For the car on the left, it's probably business as usual -

The road seems to be too small:
(can accident photography be stylish? judge for yourself here - work by Arnold Odermatt)

    (images credit: Arnold Odermatt)

London buses are too big for their own good

This incident happened just recently; here is a background story:
"The route is a recognized diversion route and drivers know to drive straight through the middle. This one however chose to go in the left lane" -

Some trucks can handle overload, others - can't

The worst is when your overload SHIFTS in the wrong direction:

Such loads require some ingenuity to assemble:

    Wrecks which refuse to die:

    Accidents waiting to happen:

Accidents as... toys: sold only to aspiring bad drivers - to hone their skills of failing in a spectacular way.

Are you in a huge hurry? Drive your car straight into the subway (just make sure it can fit in some tight places):

(images sent in by: B.E. de Jong)

    Car (involuntary) acrobatics:

    What a mess! -

(photo sent in by Jelle Sjollema)

Surprise! Say a little prayer, thanking your windshield:

The "flying" manhole lids could also present a problem:

A giant fork falling out of the sky? Well, an urban art, actually:
("Royal de Luxe" visiting Iceland, more info)

This guy may cause some serious accidents. I hope he realizes that -

    A Moment Before...

Admittedly, the picture above is almost certainly the truck being towed. Still, it's pretty creepy.

After the accident. Drive it, if it can still be driven -

Who said kids do not ride in the back of pickup trucks any more? They do -

    How truck drivers get fired

How do you get a truck in this position?

Maarten Dijkstra sends us this picture: "A delivery truck in the city of Leiden, Holland, had a brake failure and rolled into the canal" -

What happened here? Maybe the trailer had one wheel too many? -

    This is not very safe:

    Sunk... or Buried!

Who says cars only travel on solid surfaces? They are equally adept navigating on sand, water, ice or snow - or at least they are trying to... Really hard, judging from these pictures:

Oh, the sense of impending sinking! This car is doomed -

The following picture was sent to us by Edo Engel. He says: "During the night, a major water pipe below the pavement cracked. Since the soil in our area is sandy, the sand was flushed away through the pipe quite easily, creating an ever expanding cavity" -

    More sinkholes:

    Police are not immune... -

Blondes are definitely not immune... -

The following shots were probably staged, but who knows? maybe it's an amazing reality:

Why is this car so dirty? -

    Idiot Parking

These guys couldn't even park a bicycle, it seems:

    Parking turned into a nightmare:

You might have seen this picture before - but it's worth another look: this seems simply impossible -

Similarly masterful parking can be observed here:

Want to escape the plight of motorway whatsoever? Attach a jet engine to your sub-compact and go frolic in the desert:

But be aware about the catastrophic results that others achieved with the similar set-up (even ending up in a Darwin Stupidity Award listings): Read the full story here!

And of course, the infamous car / horse hybrids from the East Europe countries (mostly from Bulgaria)! They come in all shapes and sizes:

    (photos by Minko Mikhailov)

Perhaps this is a good alternative in view of our rising gas prices? Well, you do have to feed the horse and keep it warm in the winter. Just make sure that "car" has good air-conditioning against the smell of manure.
