Flow from the oxygen cylinder is a continues flow forex 2 liters for minute our breathing is not we take on avarage 12 breath per minute so a single breath would take 5 seconds. As expiration is twice as long as inspiration inspiratory time woud be 5/3(1.7) secons since our breath volume is avarage 500ml. Total gas requirement for a minte( 500/1.7)*60= 17647 ml =17.5 liters per minte

Breath volume is calculated at 8 ml per kg body weight so a person of 50 kg will have a volume of 400 ml

This is a copy of what I posted on another thread...............

Normal High-Flo oxygen concentrators that's available for home use can go up to about 10 L/min.

The management of Covid patients have changed a lot since Covid began. Remember initially more than 50% on the ventilators died. This was due to the incorrect high settings used on the machines. That's why some doctors in the US & Italy placed patients in Oxygen helmets and the survival rate increased.

For severe and critical patients anything from low doses 1-2 L/min in children and starting at 5 L/min in adults with nasal cannula, with venturi mask (6-10 L/min);
or higher flow rates (10-15 L/min) using a mask with reservoir bag.
Also oxygen can be delivered at higher flow rates and in higher concentrations, using high-flow nasal cannula (HFNC) devices, non-invasive ventilation (NIV) and
invasive ventilation devices -usually up to >0.4 FiO2/ 30 L/min

This differs across various countries with their own recommendations on covid patient management.

PS: The Indian specialists I personally know tells me that they use oxygen only on cases that's really needed and limit to 15 L/min and that's good enough to support them. This is due to the current oxygen shortage and that's what they use for their BPAP, CPAP and NIV as well but raise the FiO2 to 1.0.
