Essential phone was introduced by the creator of Android OS, Andy Rubin

The notch was first introduced in Essential phone early 2017 which only included the camera.
Essential phone's notch could save more screen space with its narrow notch.

Then Apple widened it in iPhone X to fit the earpiece as well as the front camera and other sensors. So Apple made the notch bigger.
