Aim of even a lay disciple should be trying to understand to his/her capability the Patichchasamuppada (Dependent origination) that keeps on making all this seemingly unending (succession of) suffering - the samsara. And a person is Sothapanna when he realize there's a Truth in it (beyond any doubts) - i.e. "niseka bavata path vima"...
