It matters when you get a 3000$ conference ticket but can't go because you need visa to go to the US while your European colleagues can fill out an online form to enter the US. This happened to me and I didn't have enough time to apply for visa.

I think Cyprus has a cheaper option for an EU passport. Didn't really check as I already am in EU and it is just a matter of time for me. Don't have that much money yet anyway

Some elakiriyans think they get the same privilege as 1st world passport holders if they have visa stamps from 1st world countries in their passport. This is not right.

Here are some disadvantages they should know

    * They can't visit a foreign country and suddenly decide to go to bordering country for fun. They might have to apply visa from their home country again

    * Most countries won't give you easy access to their country just because you have a visa stamp from a 1st world country on your passport. Only limited counties will do it

    * You have additional cost for visa. Some countries charge big amounts for visa. Imagine you're going on trip with your family

" Unlike 1st world passport holders they have to go through tiresome paper work to get their visa work done. This is because they don't have the privilege of getting visa free or on arrival visa access to 1st world countries. They have to waste a lot of time and energy visiting embassies to get their visa work done

*They can't transit through some countries without a visa

*Let's say they're living in a foreign country and they decide to apply visa to visit a neighbouring county without visiting home country. They might have to fly to a metropolitan city to find an embassy in the country they live. This will waste their money on hotel and flying cost.

There are many other facts like this. Maybe other elakiriyans can write about their experience here

All of those things are negligible when you compare tax. I prefer pocketing 100% of my $ income than paying 45% as tax.. That's a huge amount you save and compound depending on your $ income...
When you have travel history and assets to show its easy to get visa to US, Europe etc.. with SL passport...

Good that those countries gave you easy access. Unfortunately not every country will do this for Sri lankans with UK pr ( even some 3rd world countries )

I know. But its really easy to get visa if you have UK PR. Don't have to submit huge amount of documents and 90% of time it's 1 day service

It depends on the country you want to go. Most countries will require you to fill their visa form and submit it with supporting documents mentioned in their visa form. Having a good travel history can be an advantage when they consider your visa. most countries will require you to submit the documents they ask for. Not every country will go easy on their visa policy by allowing you to skip supporting documents.also not every country will offer 1 day visa processing service. They have a protocol they work with :) once I saw a Sri Lankan man with residence visa from a 1st world country Arguing with a 3rd world country visa officer why visa applying process is tough for him even though he holds residency in a 1st world country. The officer told him he got no choice .he was just following the protocol

Don't know but I experienced very easy process everytime with far less documents. Only Japan and took 3-4 days and ask documents. Aus and US /, canada visa only took half a day. China took 2 weeks tho

It does yes...I didn't say no..I'd ditch the SL passport the first chance I get.
But situations like yours come in once a blue moon. And I know some colleagues who have got five years US visa as they were travelling frequently.

Thinking of going doing the same. What are the disadvantages of giving up Sri Lankan citizenship?
