CR Determined To Break Twelve Year Hoodoo

This year Cr and FC will go all out to break the twelve year hoodoo of not winning the league title for the last twelve years. They last won the league in 1998 and last laid their hands on the knockout trophy in the year 2006 (When Kandy didn’t play in the tournament). This year the Reds seem to be having the fire power to topple the Kandy powerhouse and will try to bring back the glory days of CR rugby.

crfc.jpg

The team this year is lead by former Royal College deputy skipper Dushanth Lewke. Lewke is one of their star players having represented the national team in both forms of the game. His tactical number eight breaks will be vital for CR to gain those hard yards in the scrums. He is exceptional in loose play and played a key role in defense. Lewke took over the captaincy from last years skipper Ashen Karathelis.

The lads from London place have a good blend of seniors and juniors in their side and have been injected with some of the talented players who featured in the under 19 schools season last year as well as the under 19 youth Asiad. There are as many as five players who featured in the junior rugby Asiad last year, namely Niroshan Fernando, Vishwamithra Jayasinghe, Sachin David, Idris Omar and Shabeer Mohomed along with the highest point’s scorer in 2009 STC’s Arjun Manoharan.

The front row has a lot of big men in the form of national cap Terrence Henry, Anuja Perera, Naveen Wijethunga, and Sachin David. Terrence, Anuja and Naveen have a lot of experience under their belt and will be a huge force in the scrums. The new addition Sachin brings a lot of skill to the front row. The second row combination for the Reds will be Ishan Noor and Zafir Jhan. Both these players are known for their hard hits and are brilliant in loose play. Last year’s skipper Karathelis might move in to the second row position if the need arises. The third row is nothing but class and has the making of a solid unit. There are a number of flankers who will be vying for the number 6 and 7 jersey with players in the form of Idris Omar, Roshanka Kodithuwakku, Bilal Hassan, Sharo Fernando, Ashen Karathelis, and Danushka Perera. Danushka Perera and Karathelis are the most experienced out of the lot and will most probably open for the Reds. Bilal Hassan and Roshanka Kodithuwakku are also capable players in the hooker position. The number eight position will be manned by the skipper himself Dushanth Lewke.

The line has a lot of national caps and is looking good before the season. The number nine position will be taken by either Srinath Suriyabandara, Dilan De Soyza or experienced Zulker Hameed. The fly half position is up for grabs after the departure of last year’s fly Dev Anand and will be a keenly contested one. Former junior national skipper Niroshan Fernandoais a firm contender along with Nigel Ratwatte. The center combination will be key with the Costa brothers Ashan and Lasintha the most probably choice in the squad. The other centers in the side are, Nuwan Chamara and Nirushan Karunanyake. The fight for the wing position will be amongst Heshan Guneratne, Arjun Manoharan, Vishwamithra Jayasinghe, and Dinusha Chathuranga. The full back possiton will be taken over by either Reza Mubarak or Shabbier Mohomed.

The team this year will be jointly coached by Bilal Yusuf who was the the u-19 national coach and assistant coach for Royal last year and former Cr captain and S.Thomas’ College forwards coach in 2009 Viraj Prassanna.

An interesting factor to note is that Bilal Yusuf who played in the 2002 Royal side under the captaincy of Zulker Hameed and vice captaincy of Dushanth Lewke will be coaching the two players this year.

Talking to ThePapare the coach of the CR side Bilal Yusuf said this before the season, "It is a relatively young team, and the average age of the team is about 22. The disadvantage of a young side is lack of experience; however a younger side is likely to play with more passion and heart. If the team can play with the same passion they did when they played for their schools, I feel Cr could be in with a good chance for the title.” when asked why he left Royal College this is what he had to say, “I was actually going to take a complete break from coaching this year due to work commitments. But when I was offered the Cr job I accepted since practice starts at 6 in the evening which helps me balance both my work and coaching, where when I was coaching Royal I had to be at the ground at 4."

Viraj Prassanna the co-coach of the CR side had this to say, “it’s a big task for me personally moving from coaching schools to club and we have a great chance with a good blend of seniors and juniors in the side. Every side is a threat to us, even the last two teams in the league. We don’t want what happened last year against Navy to happen this year”. How is the new coaching combination? “It’s going really well; Bilal and I are getting along really well. He is a great tactical coach and with my expertise in the field I’m sure we can reign supreme this year”.

“My aim for the season is to win every single game in the league and the knock-out. We have trained really hard this year and the boys are looking good ahead of the season. I have a very strong feeling that we can win this year”.

The club which was formed in 1922 has produced a lot of quality players who have gone on to represent the national team. This year like any other year the Reds are looking to topple the Kandy power house. And ThePapare wishes them all the best in the 2010 season.

Kandy primed for rugby glory

Yet it won’t be plain sailing

Kandy SC led by Sri Lanka first five eighths Fazil Marija for the umpteenth time, will be in pole position to retain the silverware offered for supremacy in domestic rugby when the 2010 Caltex inter-club circuit kicks off on April 30 (Friday).
But, it is not going to be plain sailing for them, with CR & FC, last season’s giant-killers Navy SC and Army SC to name a few ready to upset the KSC applecart, in what shapes to be a keenly-fought out first-round set to last till June 13.
The all-conquering Kandy SC outfit aiming for an unprecedented 10th consecutive title defence, have been boosted by the inclusions of last year’s CH & FC captain and Sri Lanka hooker Achala Perera and former Sri Lanka and CR & FC flanker Kasun de Silva.
Apart from this duo, two talented national Under-19 caps Roshan Weeraratne (Kingswood) and Dharshana Etipola (Dharmaraja) also have joined the Nittawela juggernaut - which will be coached for the fourth successive year by South African Johann Taylor who in fact masterminded Sri Lanka’s Asian Five Nations Division 1 triumph over Singapore last Saturday (April 17).
CR & FC under Sri Lanka number eight Dushanth Lewke will make a determined bid to regain the title having failed to done so since 1998, with odds heavily stacked against them.
The red shirts have recruited several promising youngsters in an effort to reclaim lost prestige and among them would be the Thomian trio of Sachin David, Roshenka Kodithuwakku and Arjun Manoharan.
Former Isipathana captain Niroshana Fernando and winger Vishwamithra Jayasinghe (who represented Sri Lanka at the A5N in Singapore) will also add more thrust to the Longden Place club and it will be interesting to see how they gel together as a side.
CR will be coached by former Sri Lanka captain and hooker Viraj Prasanna.
Meanwhile, the surprise package in the tourney would be Yoshitha Rajapaksa led Navy SC after their heady turns last year as a result of which saw both title-holders KSC and CR & FC eating humble pie in the league second-round.
For the sailors, number eight Sumedha Malewana, stand off Samantha Lakshan and lock Manjula Ruwanthileka will be players to look out being handled by Ronnie Ibrahim.
Army SC under lock forward Ajith Susantha and coached by Colonel Saliya Udugama also will be a force to be reckoned with.
However, clubs such as Havelocks SC, Police SC and Air Force SC will try their best to turn tables on favourites, while in reality they will be making up the numbers given the paucity of resources at their disposal.
The tournament will be sponsored by Chevron Lubricants Lanka Limited under their brand Caltex with their 10-year sponsorship deal with the Sri Lanka Rugby Football Union (SLRFU) expected to lapse at the end of the forthcoming season.

Curtains raised for season 2010 with a bang!

Dhanushka Ranjan, the Centre-three-quarter scored a 90mt under-the-post try for SPC

The Singer sponsored U20 Sri Lanka schools rugby tournament raised its curtains for the year 2010 when five inter-school matches took place in Colombo and Kandy yesterday (24th April).

The defending champions Royal College clashed against Prince of Wales at Royal Complex, St. Thomas' against Wesley at Mt. Lavinia, St. Peter's against Isipathana at Havelock Park while in Kandy, Trinity took on Dharmaraja at Pallekele and Kingswood met St. Anthony's at Nittawela.

The pick-of-the-week was undoubtedly the match between Isipathana and St. Peter's at Havelock Park where the spectators witnessed the fire power of St. Peter's which was simply too much for the green shirts to handled and finally succumbed to a moral crushing defeat at their home territory, 27 (2g, 2t, 1p) - 8 (1t, 1p). In the encounter in 2009, Isipathana beat St. Peter's at SPC grounds 22-12.

The point scorers for St. Peters were Bhanuka Nanayakkara (1t), Dhanushka Ranjan (1t), Sandun Herath (1t) and Shenal Dias (1t), Dulaj Perera (1p, 1c), Rizwan Meedin (1c) and for Isipathana Prasad davinda (1p) and Tharindu Siriwardana who scored the solitary try for the side.

Easy 44-5 win for Trinity at Pallekele

Trinity started on a triumphant note when they overcame the Rajans by 44 points by 44 points (2 goals, 6 tries) to 5 (1 try) at Pallekele last evening.

Peterite.jpg

It was a battle between the Trinity three-quarters and the Rajan forwards who were quite impressive.
Scrum half Rohan Weerakoon had a grand game and was responsible for four tries, winger Mohammed Seshan and lock Gothabaya and Mahes scored in the first half while number eight Sathsara Basnayake touched down for the Rajans.

At half time it was 15-5. Skipper Damith Dissanaike, a hat-trick by Rohan Weerakoon and number eight Shenon Armstrong’s try enabled the winners to pile on the points.
Centre Yatawara converted two tries. Referee D. Nimal.

Kingswood in unimpressive 23-10 win over S. Anthony’s

Kingswood had an impressive first outing beating St. Anthony’s by 23 points (4 tries and a penalty) to10 (1 penalty, 1 goal) at Nittawela.

The Antonians had more possession but could not make much headway in the first half as fly half Chamara Kumara was caught in possession a few times.

Kingswood’s back division handled the ball well and threatened almost every time they set the line in motion. Skipper Rajith Sansoni joined the line in the 16th minute, shrugged off two tackles and scored.
This was after Chamara Kumara and Sansoni had traded early penalties. The winners led 8-3 at lemons.

Scrum half Mohammed Abzal scored twice in the second half showing good side-stepping and dummying skills. The last try was scored by flanker Chetiya Wadugodapitiya. Surprisingly Sansoni missed four conversions.

The Antonians reduced the deficit with a second half try by lock Mohammed Laheer. It was converted by Chamara Kumara.

All the junior matches were called off due to heavy rain in the afternoon. Sadly the ground authorities took a long time to carry out the markings. As a result, the game got underway at 5.10 and was stopped by referee Aruna Rankothge with eight minutes left. The latter part of the second half was played in semi-darkness.

Wesley sees second half Blues 29-05

By Shamseer Jaleel
S. Thomas College coming out for the season in their opener settled and re-grouped with their super fitness level and outclassed their opponents Wesley College by 29 points (2 Goals, 3 Tries) to 5 points (1 try) at Mount Lavinia in the Singer Under 20 League rugby encounter.

At the short breather it was Wesley who led 5-0
It was Wesley who settled and played a good game in the initial half. Their forwards and three quarters clicked well. Even they handled the wet ball very well. Fly Half Azmil Omar gained lot of territory for Wesley through his booming touch kicks. Thomains opted to keep the ball with their forwards most of the first half. But Wesley defence was rock solid giving no holes at all. In the second half Thomians changed their game plan and ran the ball at every given opportunity.

Wesley missed a Penalty through Azmil Omar in the 14th minute. But 2 minutes later Wesley drew first blood when Aakil Affam kicked and chased successfully to touch down. Stand Off Azmil Omar was not on target with the conversation. Though the Thomians tried their level best to score Wesley defence stood rock solid.

Come the second half Thomians were totally different in their play. They opted to work their line. It was Centre Anuruddha Willawara who kicked and chased successfully to score the first try for the Black and Blue jersey.

Stand off Tishan Wickremasinghe was on target with the kick at goal to take a 7-5 lead. Winger Udara Pathum Silva dashed right corner flag to touch down to increase the Thomian lead to 12-5. In another forwards rush Shavin Kapuwatte touched down. Another two more tries by Anuruddha Willawara took Thomians home with an easy win in the end.

Peterite forwards’ power too much for Isipathana

4St.Peter’s 27 4Isipathana 05
By Harry Jayachandra
It was a fine start to the schools rugby season when St. Peter’s dominated the set pieces with skill to beat favourites Isipathana by 27 points (2 goals, 2 tries and a penalty) to 8 (1 penalty, 1 try) at Havelock Park yesterday.

Isipathans-vs-St.jpg

The conditions underfoot were not conducive for open rugby but the Peterites grabbed all the opportunities that came their way to record this win. At the breather St. Peter’s led 15-3. Isipathana showed early promise when flaf half Prasad Devinda fired over a penalty and enjoyed a 3-0 lead which was however short lived.

St. Peter’s burst into the forefront with some good forwards play where they carried the ball even though there were instances of selfish play.

Centre three-quarter Bhanuka Nanayakkara showed a rare turn of speed to cut across the advancing Isipathana ‘green shirts’ to slice through and score twice and the other Peterite centre Dhanushka Ranjan thrilled all those who braved the weather with a neat 90 metre run to score by the posts and Dulaj Perera was on target with the conversion. Earlier Dulaj Perera also put over a penalty for the Peterites.

Isipathana showed their prowess in the field in fits and starts and they were at no time a threat to the well drilled Peterite outfit.

Their tries were scored by No 8 Tharindu Siriwardena which came during injury time. The Peterites dominated the scrums and Isipathana were way ahead in the lineouts. Referee: Irshad Cader

Royal guns silence Cambrians

4Royal 35 4POW 06
By David Stephens, Pix by Sanka Vidanangama
Royal College quite literally ground Prince of Wales into the mud in their Singer Division I rugby encounter, played out at the Royal College Sports Complex, to manufacture a comprehensive 35-6 victory.

Royal-Vs-PoW.jpg

The Royalists carved their way through the meek Prince of Wales’ defence to power over the try line five times during the course of the match. In response Prince of Wales was only able to muster two meagre penalties from the boot of Dinuka Hettiarachchi. Play was hampered by the wet weather and throughout the match there were handling errors which at times made the action scrappy.

Predictably in the opening period of the match the ball stayed in the Prince of Wales’ half of the field the majority of the time and the Royalists staged a number of attacks on their opposition’s defence until finally Lahiru Pavithra scampered over for a try.

The relentless assault continued as the first half progressed and Prince of Wales could only look on helplessly as winger Chamara Dabare powered home again to score. Thilina Rathnayake then further consolidated Royal’s advantage before the half time whistle with another emphatic try.

By the time the second half began the Prince of Wales unit was a wounded animal and Royal sniffing blood went in for the kill with a series of mesmerizing passes and runs. Praise should be heaped on the manner in which Prince of Wales defiantly fought on against much superior opposition. However in the end Dilshan Palihakara crossed the line for another inevitable try. Chamara Dabare and Chilanga Sudara sealed Prince of Wales’ fate with two final tries to effectively secure an outcome which was on the cards from the opening moments of the match.
