If we agree that Sinhalese, Tamils, Muslims and other races as all Sri Lankans, just one nationality group, then there should be only only one representative for all of us. Therefore, only one national anthem, one national flag.

Singing the National anthem in Tamil will only highlight the differences among us-soon the Muslim brothers will want it sung in Arabic and the Burghers will want it in English, Chinese will want it in Chinese; if you say there are only a few Chinese people here, so that we don't need to sing it in Chinese, that will be 'discrimination' for a minority group; specially if we allow another minority group with a bigger population to have it their own way. (Majority among the minority)

What about those two stripes in the national flag, which are supposed to represent the Tamils and Muslims? It only indicates that they are not part of the big picture-the lion. We should remove those two stripes as well, because the lion is there to represent all of us.

Well when you put it like that , i have to agree. But having said that ethnically speaking there are realistically only 2 ethnic languages spoken here. The muslims dont speak arabic and dont really have an identity associated to it and most burghers and muslims speak sinhala.

your right about about a one nationality group being rep by one anthem but seeing some reactions here to just the suggestion of the idea says quite a lot !

Be realistic ! AFAIK there are no multi lingual national anthems in any other country. But there are so many countries with multi ethnic/linguistic societies. Why can’t people co-exist in Sri Lanka like they do in the rest of the world, without having an official representation/presence in every single thing??

I have nothing against adding few Tamil lines to the national anthem, but I really don’t see the point of making such a big fuss about it. There is only a symbolic value. If a Tamil person cant recite the national anthem, so be it.. No one will (should) think any less of him/her for not being able to do so.

And I agree with sudunone, the more we make the differences obvious the more we divide the society within.
