Malinga fit for Pakistan clash

IC2011AFP480122.jpg

February 20, 2011 : Despite missing Sri Lanka's opening match of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 against Canada today, Lasith Malinga will play in the co-hosts' next match of the tournament, when they take-on Pakistan in Colombo on February 26.
Sri Lanka chose to rest Malinga when the right-arm fast bowler picked up a back strain during a practise session in the lead up to the game against Canada.
“We didn't want to risk him,” vice-captain Mahela Jayawardene told reporters today in Hambantota.
“He bowled yesterday [Saturday] and he was okay but given the fact that we have got couple of crucial games coming up, we thought that he should get a break.
“I think he should be okay for the Pakistan game.”
The lethal Malinga is one of international cricket’s best limited overs bowlers at the moment and he is expected to spearhead Sri Lanka’s fast bowling unit.
But even with the absence of the 27 year old, Sri Lanka’s bowling attack looked potent, crushing minnows Canada by 210 runs in match-three, after they dismissed the team from North America for just 122 runs.
Sri Lanka and Pakistan meet in Colombo on February 26 for the 10th match of the 2011 World Cup.
