184 teams to contest inter-school cricket season

The Sri Lanka Schools Under-19 cricket tournament for the new season will once again be sponsored by Munchee and the tournament has been named the “2010-11 Munchee Youth-19 School Cricket Tournament”.

The tournament will run until April next year on a league system.
The President of the Schools Cricket Association and the Principal of Prince of Wales College, Moratuwa, Rohana Karunaratne said a total of 184 teams will participate and 32 teams will be selected from round one and out of this 16 will be chosen for the round two matches. Eight teams will qualify for the quarter finals.

He also said that while these games progress evaluations will be carried out to select the best team, best player of the tournament, best bowler and best batsman.

The 16 teams that qualify for the round two matches will also take part in a T-20 tournament. School teams from all parts of the island will 'pitch' for the trophy, and preliminary matches will take place at regional level at a steady 'pace' while the finals are scheduled to take place in Colombo where the winning team will be the lucky recipients of the Munchee Challenge Trophy.

Royal College Colombo and Mahinda College Galle emerged joint winners of the 50-over tournament while Nalanda College were the winners of the T-20 tournament at the last event.

ICC sounds red alert on Sri Lanka World Cup venues

IC55400201023.jpg

December 17, 2010 : The International Cricket Council (ICC) World Cup venue inspection team, which visited Sri Lanka earlier this month, have raised serious concern over all three Sri Lankan venues assigned to host next year’s ICC Cricket World Cup.

Mumbai's Wankhede Stadium which is to host the final on April 2 and Kolkata’s Eden Gardens have also raised concerns for the 30-man ICC team that visited all World Cup venues to check the progress of construction work, international media reports claimed.

"The ICC also fears that three other tournament venues in Sri Lanka are way behind schedule," reported England’s Daily Mail yesterday.
Several other international newspapers and websites which were privy to the report submitted to the ICC by the venue inspection team headed by Chris Tetley confirmed that the ICC team, in its report, had expressed dissatisfaction over the state of all three Sri Lankan venues – Premadasa Stadium in Colombo, Mahinda Rajapaksa Stadium in Hambantota and the Pallekele Stadium in Kandy.

The ICC team which assessed the preparedness of the venues have stated in their interim evaluation report that the venues haven’t adhered to the November 30 deadline, under the Host Agreement, to complete all construction work.

Professor Eugene van Vuuren, the ICC’s Stadium Consultant, had also made comment on the report stating that the venues may at best be completed by late January.

"This pre-supposes no unforeseen delays or further impacts on construction by the current poor weather," he wrote.
IC2010121750545.jpg
"Following completion of the building works, there are a number of activities that need to be completed, including site clearance, landscaping and necessary beautification of the grounds, interior finishing and furnishing, facility commissioning and certification by local authorities, securing of the venue precinct perimeters and installation of entry gates, testing of all facilities including certification of the floodlight lux levels, and installation of temporary infrastructure required specifically for the World Cup," the report stated.
The ICC team will make their final inspection after the fresh deadline of January 15 for completion of venue construction, and will give their final verdict on whether the venues will host the matches or not.
The ICC team in its colour-coded report, have given 'red marks' to several facilities at all three Sri Lankan venues.

"If construction is not completed by January 15, it is not possible to confirm that the venues will be in a suitable condition to be handed over by January 31," the report goes on to state.

This inspection team will take a final decision whether these venues will be used or the matches will be shifted to the back-up venues, if the original venues fail to meet the required standard.

The Sinhalese Sports Club Ground in Colombo and the Rangiri Dambulla Stadium in Dambulla are the back-up venues that have been proposed by Sri Lanka Cricket to the ICC.

Sri Lanka 'impatient' to test Cup venues

Sanga2-80%287%29.jpg
Sri Lanka are eager to test the island's new cricket venues ahead of next month's World Cup, skipper Kumar Sangakkara said Friday.

Sri Lanka, who were runners-up in the last Cup in 2007, will stage 12 matches of the showpiece event, in Hambantota, Pallekele and Colombo. The remaining games will be held in India and Bangladesh.

"The Premadasa stadium (in Colombo) hosts most of our big matches," Sangakkara told reporters after a training session in Colombo.
"We are impatient to play there as well as at the other two venues to be able to get an understanding of how they are playing, especially when it comes to fielding the right combinations."

The wicketkeeper-batsman said the players were keen to see how the wickets would behave under lights to discover the "idiosyncrasies" of defending or chasing totals and the dew factor.

The Premadasa and Hambantota venues will be tested when Sri Lanka host the West Indies for three one-dayers that were rescheduled due to heavy rains in December last year. The first match starts in Hambantota on January 31.

"It will be interesting to see what challenges they present. Playing on these grounds with the West Indies will give us an idea of what to expect and how to prepare for the World Cup," said Sangakkara.
The venues were officially handed over to an International Cricket Council (ICC) inspection team this week.

Sri Lanka Cricket secretary Nishantha Ranatunga said the ICC team were "pleased" with the venues.

Sri Lanka are placed in Pool A with defending champions Australia, Pakistan, New Zealand, Zimbabwe, Kenya and Canada, with the top four sides making it to the quarter-finals.

The tournament starts in Dhaka on February 19.

Muralitharan plans World Cup swansong

Muralitharan9-80%287%29.jpg

Sri Lankan off-spinner Muttiah Muralitharan will retire from international cricket after the February 19-April 2 World Cup in India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.

Muralitharan, the world's leading wicket-taker in Tests and one-day internationals, had retired from the five-day format last July against India, after reaching exactly 800 test wickets.

"This World Cup will be my last outing," Muralitharan said on the sidelines of a training session in Colombo.

"I am retiring totally from international cricket thereafter."
The Sri Lankan, who played for the Chennai Super Kings franchise in the first three editions of the Indian Premier League, will continue to play Twenty20 cricket.

"My time is up. I have signed up to play for two years in the IPL. I am also looking at similar work in New Zealand and perhaps England," added Muralitharan, who has taken 517 wickets in 339 one-dayers.
"This is my fourth World Cup. We won in 1996 and came close in 2007 by reaching the final. This would be a memorable one for me and for Sri Lankan fans."

Muralitharan ruled out any plans of coaching stint in the near future.
"There are plenty of coaches and lots of talented people out there," he said.

"I will take things as they come. For the moment, no coaching stints."

SLC chief claims stadiums ready, slams critical newspapers

Sri Lanka Cricket chairman DS de Silva has accused the Sri Lankan media of publishing false reports over the delay in constructing World Cup venues. "Can you take seriously what those newspapers say? Have those newspapers ever said anything good?" De Silva asked the BBC's Sinhala Service. "What can I do if they continue publishing wrong reports?” he added. He was commenting over the reports claiming that the progress of building Sri Lanka's three World Cup venues are lagging behind the ICC deadlines. The International Cricket Council has raised concerns over some venues. ICC chief executive Haroon Lorgat recently revealed that five of the 15 venues across the three host countries were behind. "We haven't stopped anybody from visiting the venues. They can now visit the venues and publish their reports," de Silva had said. He added that the ICC officials, including pitch specialist Andy Atkinson who recently visited all three venues, have expressed satisfaction over the progress in constructions. "Both R Premadasa Stadium and Pallekele Stadium are 99% ready. I hope Mahinda Rajapaksa Stadium will also be ready soon," added De Silva. "Apart from Hambantota, only the cleaning phase is left in the other two stadiums." "Those who questioned about the venues are not saying anything now. "When they see the progress on television, those newspapers are now really surprised how we managed to build three international stadiums within nine months." - BBC Sinhala Service

Six World Cup players nursing injuries

Sri Lankan cricket selectors didn’t have the most difficult of tasks of picking the final 15 for the World Cup in the sub-continent, as they had identified the core group of player’s months back, but sources said the selectors had taken a big gamble naming a squad without subjecting them to a fitness test. Sources revealed that at least 6 out of the 15 are currently nursing for some sort of injuries, thus questioned the selection policy of the selectors who have conveniently forgotten a salient point.

Sources said among the injured were two spinners, two fast bowlers, a middle-order batsman and an all rounder; all of them are currently receiving medication.

“I think to be fare by everyone they should have done a fitness test before naming the squad as we have a very good chance of winning this time. But sadly it has not happened,” source who wished to remain anonymous said.
Sri Lanka hastily named a 15-man squad on January 7, ten days before the deadline which denied them a chance of assessing player performances and fitness at the ongoing Inter-provincial cricket tournament.

Basnahira and Kandurata meet in finals today

16795359116sanga.jpg

The final of the Inter-provincial Limited-over Cricket Tournament gets underway today between Basnahira and Kandurata under lights at the redeveloped R. Pramadasa Stadium, Colombo. The finals will be held in a pitch which has now become a talking point. The batsmen who took part in the recent games had much to complain about the behaviour of the pitch. The last four games at the R. Premadasa, held after redevelopment, turned low-scoring encounters with the highest total being 221, scored by both SSC and Basnahira. However, hard-hitting opening bat Tillakaratne Dilshan will captain the Basnahira side while Sri Lanka captain Kumar Sangakkara will guide the Kandurata team.

Basnahira won two matches out of four in the first round to qualify to the semi-finals and defeated strong Waymaba, led by Mahela Jayawardene in the semi-final. Kandurata, meanwhile, also won two matches in the first round and defeated Ruhuna in the semi. Despite the unexpected condition of the pitches, a close encounter is expected between the two teams.

Squads –

Basnahira: Tillakaratne Dilshan (Cap.), Hasantha Fernando, Kaushal Silva, Angelo Mathews, Dilruwan Perera, Thisara Perera, T.M. Sampath, Thilan Thushara, Malinda Warnapura, Jeevantha Kulatunga, Lasith Malinga, Nadeera Nawela, Roshen Silva, Chaminda Vaas and Sajeewa Weerakoon

Kandurata: Kumar Sangakkara (Cap.), Yohan de Silva, Saman Jayantha, Kosala Kulasekara, Farveez Maharoof, Muttiah Muralitharan, Seekkuge Prasanna, Kithuruwan Vithanage, Sohan Boralessa, Hans Fernando, Chamara Kapugedera, Nuwan Kulasekara, Jehan Mubarak, Sachith Pathirana, Angelo Perera and Chaminda Vidanapathirana.

Sri Lanka shifts venues for Windies ODIs

Sri Lanka has switched venues for next week’s one-day series against the West Indies to Colombo, an official said Wednesday, as both teams prepare for next month’s World Cup.

The games will be played during the day at the Sinhalese Sports Club ground in Colombo, Sri Lanka Cricket media manager Brian Thomas told AFP, starting on January 31.

The matches had been scheduled as day-night encounters at the World Cup venues, including the newly-built Hambantota and the renovated Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.

“The World Cup venues for matches have been officially handed over to the ICC (International Cricket Council) this month and ICC rules allow us to practice but not play until the World Cup starts,” Thomas said.

Heavy rains in December forced the one-day series to be postponed and the matches will be used by both teams to warm up ahead of the upcoming World Cup, co-hosted by India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh from February 19 to April 2.

Schedule:
Jan 31: First one-dayer at Sinhalese Sports Club (Colombo)
Feb 4: Second one-dayer at Sinhalese Sports Club (Colombo)
Feb 6: Third one-dayer at Sinhalese Sports Club (Colombo)
