The Supreme Court today issued a stay order on the Gazette notification on the new TV regulations that restrict telecasts on all television stations - state as well as private.
The order was issued by the Supreme Court considering 11 petitions filed against the new regulations.
The tribunal consisting Chief Justice Sarath N. Silva and Judges Shirani Thilakawardene and K. Sri Pawan directed that the relevant gazette notification should be withdrawn until a final verdict is given regarding the new regulations.
Several media institutions and media organizations had filed the petitions stating that the regulations would give wide powers to the government to interpret the regulations in a manner wanted by them and thereby impose restrictions.
