There’s a nice story as recounted by PTA— he was understandably quite happy about the film he made and later in the year he went to see No Country for Old Men which had been just released. As the film went by and upon seeing how good a job the Coens have done with McCarthy’s book, all of his previously held smugness was deflated so quickly. Both films are great adaptations but I too think Coens had done something beautiful with the source material. Strangely both are westerns that tells something about the wonderfully brutal machoism of America.

To round it off there's a similar story Brian de Palma says about the time his film Dressed to Kill came out. After screening his film and seeing the reception he was in seventh heaven but then one day he went out to check out his buddy’s new film Raging Bull. As the movie opened with that slo-mo footage of De Niro moving up and down to Mascagni's strings, Palma says he immediately knew that Scorsese had bested him.

These are friendly rivalries. Healthy competition between peers.
