VISA is needed only if you r entering the country, not for staying in the airport,
But if you book your tickets through two airlines, one from Colombo to BKK and some other airlines from BKK to NZ, so you have to check-in again in BKK, If so ask ur agent to arrange direct transferring of ur baggages in to the second airlines. He can arrange it by discussing with the airlines. Otherwise U'll be needing to cross the immigration.
They may ask VISA,,,,, BUT sometimes their officers help you to go to ur baggages by, bypassing the immigration points...

That happened to me in india while, I had a transit in Kolkata, which I had to collect my baggages, as I didnt have VISA ,one officer came to me and bypassed the immigration point and took me directly to the gate, and he took my passport and the ticket, and did all the checking work for me. so if INDIANs do that Thai people will do for sure..

So It,s ok Not to have transit VISA,,,
If you are still in doubt try calling the Thailand embassy...
    GOOD LUCK

If in case the agent has issued two seperate tickets, for an e.g. CMB - BKK one ticket and another ticket for the onward journey... in that case you can't interline unless the ticket has been issued as a conjunction ticket also both the airlines should have an interline baggage policy to through check the baggage.

Normally if the connecting flight belongs to the same group or partner airlines, eg like the Star Alliance, Oneworld, Skyteam etc you can safely assume that there will be no problems.

You don’t need visa unless you go out the airport and come back. If you’re staying in side the airport say for 1 or even 2 days that’s fine. No visa needed.
