Peradeniya Mal Waththe...
its for the students who r not doing a degree but goin to smal colleges n do small courses.with others no problems have been found.you can start a degree here in SL and go to uk to complete the degree.as i went to shefeild halum to complete my bsc and did part time jobs while studyn and started msc up6n completing bsc...dont just waste money and do stupid things just to show off people that your in UK and studyn there.even after completing my bsc, me and my batch mates r stil not employd proprly and sumtims we stil do odd jobs wchich are also very hard to find these days.thos who didnt start their msc got kicked out and now there back in SL. We were kicked out of uni hostel just after the day we finished our exams coz they have to take new students.having nothing to do being alone in an unkown country, we had to find our own acomodation.so me and couple of friends colectd al d money we had and moved to london and tuk a smal room for rent wchis not enf for 3people atleast and had to pay almost rs50000 per week.being unemployd in a unkown country with no suport ,no contact with loved 1s, how do you think we would feel? But we draged along. People in SL THINKS ITS A TREND AND THEY JUST APLY N GO TO DINGY PLACES TO STUDY AND THINK ITS EASY.ITS NOT EASY AND EVERY1 CANT DO IT.AFTER SPENDING 50,60LAX SAYING THAT UR DOING A DEGRE AND IF U CANT CANT HANDLE THINGS PROPERLY,U ENDUP IN SL WIT A DEGRE,OR COLEGE CERTIFICATE WHICH IS NOT RECOGNIZD WIL KEEP U UNEMPLOYD IN SRI LANKA AS WEL AFTER SPENDING 50,60 LAX.REMEMBER THAT.ITS OUR PARENTS MONEY AND WE OVE THEM.THINK TWICE OR THRICE OR EVEN MORE B4 U DO SUMTHING. There are enf of gud qualifcations which u can get in sl whic r highly recognizd in lanka.even now our lives r unstable and dont know wat wil hapn. CHOICE IS UPTO YOU ALL.MAKE IT WISELY AND CHOSE WHAT U WANA BE. If u go there by just selecting a course our idiots show u like heaven and if u dont like when u go there and if u want to change.that wil a disaster as wel.go thru each and evry modules and course content b4 u aply.in sum corses it luks easy but u get subjcts lyk double maths at d end whic r put by purpose to put students down. Anyway,al d best for u al.hope my advice helps

Quite true bro.

Just curious, what are these things that you could to "do stupid things just to show off people that your in UK and studyn there" ??

Thats exactly what I meant when I said that the British Education system is loosing quality, pretty soon it will be more like a foreign location for the Sri Lankan institutes like ANC or ACBT. I doubt the new Visa reforms would do any good to restore lost educational quality.
Quality of UK education is good

Universities are better than small colleges

All UK universities are not the same

Bristol University is not the same as say Edge Hill University

But if Sheffield, which is a University and not a (small) College, is in the top 20 as you say, I can imagine as to how the rest would be below that 20. And of course no two universities are technically identical.

yes

Sheffield University (UK top 20 university) is one university that accepts Sri Lankan OL's

http://www.shef.ac.uk/srilanka/entry.html

Top 20 schools are the top research universities

Most students want to go to these universities so the admission is more competitive

So just like you said, Sheffield which I just learned has pretty low entrance requirements, is in the top 20, and now the top 20 research universities. So if thats the quality of the top 20, isn't the state of the remaining obvious? Despite this how can you still claim that the British education is holding upto its expectations?

It doesn't seem to transform students but mutilate them, just look at what the member had to say about his experience in UK.

I understand what you mean bro. This has become a pathetic situation in Sri Lanka. Part of this blame goes to the local education system itself, its incompetency despite its scarce capacity has made education a disaster.

No. I dont think that they are Government-owned. There are no Government operated polytechnics. But I believe that they do have the student subsidy. Its pretty cheap for locals and Maoris to pursue higher education, just as 15% of what an international student would pay.

So how is your application going? You'll be starting your course in February I believe?

no macho sit is a government institute and they have postgraduate diploma's, graduate diploma's, bachelor's, diploma, certificate.

    check there site

The Southern Institute of Technology (SIT) is one of 20 government polytechnics and institutes of technology offering tertiary education throughout New Zealand. SIT programmes are accredited and approved by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority up to postgraduate level.

You've got to see one of the Local O/L English papers to see what I'm saying.
Its practically very basic and easy. Students going with only that knowledge in English are going to have a tough time with Academic writing, conversations and big time trouble with peers. I really can't picture how this system works.

yea i dnt think without a acceptable grade in ielts its easy to get into a good uni any where

Yes, by law all polytechnics are required to be certified by NZQA. But I am not quite certain about their ownership now. I was quite sure that they were all privately-owned although regulated by the Government. Plus I know that SIT has a scheme of where domestic students dont have to pay the tution fee (although only part of it is covered by the Government). Plus, Invercargill is a pretty decent city.

Which intake are you getting into?

But if the medium of communication is of a low level, then a student would have great difficulties in coping up, regardless of what their individual knowledge is on the subject. Its pointless if you know a thousand facts but cant properly express them.

If the student is having any difficulty they will offer access to a language program.

So is that a Unversity's business strategy? Get in students, and if they are incompetent in the English language (which most probably would be the case if they were judged by the local O/L English paper and nothing else) to feed them with an additional course to charge a 'few' extra bucks? Why not ask them to do something like IELTS (or equivalent) straight off and save time and money? Isn't there a vast difference between an english programme in the UK and doing IELTS in SL?

well they do offer certificate programmes to degree level programmes...yes they do have a zero fee thing for nz citizens n pr's....machang there are lots of semi govt and private institutes in nz like raffles and semi govt ucol in wanganui...but they aint good as sit...coz sit has vast range of courses to choose...the only thing is invercargill is alot more cold than other parts in nz....i think its govt owned....nzqa is a nz qualification which all the polytechnics should registered with...its same for every1...

Southern Institute of Technology (SIT) situated in Invercargill, New Zealand offers degree, diploma and certificate programmes, as well as SIT2LRN distance learning, vocational preparation and personal development courses. SIT offer a Zero Fee Scheme to New Zealand citizens and permanent residents to study without incurring tuition fees - maximise your opportunities and minimise debt!

i dnt think private owned polytechnics offering any zero fee schemes....

my intake is in feb 7th...and my visa is still on the process at the nz embassy in bangkok

Only some universities accept GCSE/OL english
Others want academic IELTS for degree level courses

If it's a below degree level course the government requires academic IELTS

Ya. So that could be the case with some of the Polytechnics, I didn't know that.

Fair enough, it gets colder as you go down the South Island, Invercargill is almost at the latter of the South Island. Afterall, the South Pole is just down the street. February is the humid season, its Summer right now, and there are a few bright and sunny says occasionally. But Winter gets real cranky.

Your Visa should take no longer than a month, so I think you've got time. Just make your flight bookings in advance, even if you have to give in a letter without your Visa.
