UK student new rules

New rules announced for students (Tier 4 student visa)

  • Only Students who study at universities and publicly funded further education colleges will be able to work (20 hours for university students & 10 hours for public colleges).
  • Students who study at private colleges will not have any work permission.
  • Only postgraduate students at universities & government-sponsored students can bring in dependants. (course must be more than 12 months)
  • Time limit on student visas : 3 years at diploma, HND and 5 years at bachelor's degree, graduate level, master's degree. PhD's etc. will be allowed more time.
  • Post study work (2 year visa) program will be closed.

I was notified about this by my flatmate. Such a shame. It's going to be hard for next year students as they have to return back home after paying such a lot of money. I'd gladly go back home and do a job if the fees were ~£5000 for the course (I'm a MSc student).

Some of it is good though. Requiring higher english knowledge is better. And not allowing to bring dependants for UG level is good too.

PG students can bring dependents only if the duration is more than 12 months or if they are government sponsored

most Msc's & PG Dip.'s are 12 months or less

these rules are designed to reduce the number of students coming

this is not good news for the educational institutions

many private colleges will close due to fewer students (private college students will not be able to work)
