Several University students' federations are to conduct a massive protest campaign and a march tomorrow to the Sri Lanka President's residence, Temple Trees.
The Inter University Students Federation, backed by the Marxist Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna told the media that the students are hoping to hand over a special letter to President Mahinda Rajapaksa at the end of the protest march.
According to the Federation, the students are protesting the failure of education officials to meet their demands submitted by them in the recent past.
The students pointed out that they have not received any relief to their demands. They have demanded the government to stop privatization of the university process, reducing the education rights, suppression of students among a host of other problems.
The security officials stressed that they have to use minimum power if the students attempt to reach the premises of Temple Trees as it is in a high security zone.
Political analysts in the country say the university students in Sri Lanka are abusing their privileges while receiving free education.
University education is free in Sri Lanka but only a handful of the country's students qualify from the highly competitive national exams to enter the universities. Wealthy students who do not get into the universities go overseas to receive further education paying hefty tuition fees.
Establishing private universities will retain the money in the country and also will reduce the brain drain as most of these foreign educated students do not return to the country, political analysts point out. However, the Marxist backed student unions vehemently oppose the idea of private universities.
