With the intensification of military offensives to liberate the Wanni, the Sri Lankan government is under demand by India, at the instigation of Tamil Nadu, to halt offensives against the LTTE, 'Lanka' reports, quoting political sources. More pressure is being exerted after the capture of the Sea Tiger base at Vedithaltivu in Mannar, a main supply route from South India.
According to the JVP-backed newspaper, troops of the 57, 58 and 59 divisions are now marching towards the Mallavi, Thunukkai and Alampil bases in Mullaitivu.
In the meantime, Iceland, a country that supports the LTTE, has come forward to facilitate peace negotiations, it said.
Defence and political sources said that the month of August would be crucial in the quest to defeat the terrorists.
President Mahinda Rajapaksa and Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh are to hold talks on this matter on the sidelines of the SAARC summit in Colombo in a few weeks' time.
However, senior government ministers have advised the president to continue with the military operations, to target polls for the North Central and Sabaragamuwa Provincial Councils on August 23rd.
Commanders of the three armed forces have personally expressed their displeasure to Mr. Rajapaksa over India's exertion of pressure on Colombo, 'Lanka' adds.
