Hey I was just wondering how many of you are using KDE and how many are using gnome?
I am currently kinda inbetween and i just wanted to know the pros and cons of the two desktops.
I think KDE looks better but still kind of hard to get used to after too much gnome.

Just reboot the ubuntu, just before you see the login prompt, you'll be able to see it loading the nvidia drivers. Depends on how slow the PC is. On fast machines, its extremely brief.
Anyway, after login you'll see a major improvement in the graphics.

your screen shot above shows that you have installed the nvidia drivers properly.

Are you running Ubuntu as a virtual machine or something ?
anyway, from a terminal, execute :
cat /etc/X11/xorg.conf | grep nvidia
type it in all simple letters and that's the pipe symbol and not capital i or simple L
post the result here.

With Gnome desktop, installing fonts is a bit of a pain.
As root, copy the fonts to /usr/share/fonts/truetype folder.
then from within the same folder, run sudo fc-cache -f -v

With KDE desktop (kubuntu), installing fonts is a breeze. Kmenu-> System Settings ->Fonts installer

Sinhala unicode is availabe in the Ubuntu repositories. You can install it directly from that.
sudo apt-get install ttf-sinhala-lklug

If you want the Sinhala interface, that's also availalbe.
sudo apt-get install language-pack-gnome-si

ok, one minor point, you can copy and paste directly from the terminal. No need to post screen shots.
Also, the first command you typed up there is correct. there is a space between cat and /, also the in X11, X is capital.
anyway this shows that the nvidia driver is not being used. if it were being used the command should show a result like this :
~$ cat /etc/X11/xorg.conf | grep nvidia
# nvidia-xconfig: X configuration file generated by nvidia-xconfig
# nvidia-xconfig: version 1.0 (buildmeister@builder62) Tue Mar 24 06:15:32 PST 2009
Driver "nvidia"

ok, lets force the system to use nvidia drivers.

you downloaded the package separately or using apt-get ?
Ifyou used apt-get it should've installed SCIM. check the settings or administration menu for the SCIM management, From there, you can select to use Sinhala interface.
I dont use Gnome desktop so I cant say the exact menu to use.

yea i used "samanala" input scheme its good but not very usable, i found a *.mim file ... a key map file it says it works on "m17n" but i dont know how to install it or install the key map file to use with it you know how?
and oh is m17n and SCIM the same? it says some modules can be run in SCIM too do have to unistall scim to install m17n?

To be honest, I've no idea what the m17n is. Have to look it up.

i want to use that *.mim file, it works almost the sameway that my prog for windows works

sinhala for linux is miles ahead from windows!

Put up a poll.
I like KDE. I've tried all the major desktops as well as a few uncommon ones but KDE is the best for me.
Its the most competent and the easiest to use for me.
