Expanding upon what you did, I tested winzip winrar and 7zip for a double kick to Ranga.
The Computer:
![]()
Note: All programs are 32bit to even the playground.
Test 1
The folder size is 300MB, contains five video files (.wmv)
![]()
7Zip: http://www.egoshare.com/57c025aef993744314313ca7693da730/7zip1wmv.html (7zip takes 30sec)
WinZip : http://www.egoshare.com/c5dec704e998e61f75d2f0f27c51ec8d/winzip1wmv.html (winzip takes 40 sec for legacy zip)
WinRar : http://www.egoshare.com/847815e8c64c1540639e43f95e7aa597/winrar1wmv.html (1min video winrar processed 40%)
Interesting observation: 7zip compresses zip faster than winzip when doing these videos (10sec difference)
Test 2
The folder size is again 300MB, contains assorted pdfs docs and jpgs
![]()
7Zip : http://www.egoshare.com/dc58139d111d962dfb4ecf17c131a5ad/7zip2wmv.html (41sec)
WinZip : http://www.egoshare.com/9b276c0445ea1d3e38e05e552d30021e/winzip2wmv.html (about 39sec again legacy zip)
WinRar : http://www.egoshare.com/549bf6b8855b589d9a9a52535808d490/winrar2wmv.html (1min video winrar processed 33%)
Compressing these assorted files WinZip seems to be on par or better by 2secs.
winrar seems to need atleast 5 times(I'm being generous in estimating poor winrar) more time than 7zip to do a compression job. That's similar to your observation of winrar being 6 times slower than 7zip
The interesting thing is 7zip is on par with winzip, or sometimes faster than winzip when doing zip formatNo need to talk about winrar.
Now Ranga, the ball is in your parkGive us some statistics of your winrar.
Statistics mean benchmarks not things such as this:
winrar: used by zillions
7zip: used by negative infinity
lol your lovely purple color![]()

1. Y did u use zip format? (u sed .7zip get best compress and .zip got speed)
2. Did u really believe this “winrar seems to need atleast 5 times more time than 7zip to do a compression job.”
3. What if I show my statistic. Did u accept u loose?
4. What if I show u r a liar?
Btw can u tell me how to double kick 2 persons at same time?

I don't act as a stunt double for Jackie Chan.

mkranga said:7z, LZMA and multi-threading, quote from the 7-Zip Help
If you enable the Multi-threading option, 7-Zip will use two threads for compressing. It can speed up compressing up to 70–80% on Multi-Processor systems or up to 25% on a Pentium 4 with Hyper-Threading.
Idiot’s idiot’s idiots..... See this

Have you been using WinRAR without multithreaded support??? ROFLMAOmkranga said:In WinRAR solid compression is off by default. In 7-Zip it is on. You can untick it, and the program will remember your preference. Strangely, solid compression is the default even for the CLI command u (Update). What is the purpose of solid compression for archives that are meant to be updated regularly and often?
You proved it yet again.

You are really funny.![]()
Tell us one good reason why you think WinRAR is better, except the fact that you THINK most people use it.
1. I've shown7-zip compressed certain files at 3-10 times faster on a 64bit platform and faster in 32bit platform as well, but not as much as in 64bit. What more do you need? It's not compressing only that matters. Every archive I download, extracts faster in 7-zip. Only time when WinRAR and 7-zip performance is equal is when I extract a 700MB movie, because the hard disk has a lot to do in that case.
2. 7-zip is free (maybe not a big importance)
3. 7-zip one of the few (3?) archivers that natively comes in 64bit

): recovery of corrupt archives and in-place editing of solid archives. The first is the main reason why the rar format is practically a standard for file-sharing. WinRAR is localized in 40 languages and offers a lifetime licence.Anusha said:Have you been using WinRAR without multithreaded support??? ROFLMAO![]()

You are the idiot!!!You proved it yet again.
We use multithreading in all WinRAR, WinZip and 7-zip and every software that supports them. n00bWe are not new to PCs like you are
The test results I showed are all done on a single core CPU (because VirtualBox only allows one core to be assigned for virtual machine). So no improvement by using more threads.
